6361  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-qt crashes, need help exporting my private keys to new wallet on: May 16, 2012, 02:02:41 AM
I remember someone else had this problem recently but it was resolved after getting a new blockchain or something like that.  [Update: Read luke-jr's suggestion first.]

It wouldn't hurt to try starting the client with -rescan.

If that doesn't fix it, try removing the blk*.dat from your data directory and restart.

Or, for testing purposes a quicker method to get a copy of the blockchain is to download a recent blockchain binary download:

As far as importing into a new wallet, v0.6.x as importprivkey:

6362  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Wires enabled at Spend Bitcoins on: May 16, 2012, 12:34:30 AM
I'm confused ... that link goes to the forum post that shows Status: Disabled.

Are you providing International wire transfer withdrawals?

[Edit: I see, that will be like a toggle, as that is not a service that will always be available.
Why not having your last post there always give the current status of enabled/disabled?]

Woah. ... no more international wire withdrawal?  Is that globally, or just U.S.?   [Update: Just a misunderstanding, wire's still supported]
6364  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Dwolla changes TOS to prohibit Bitcoin transactions? on: May 16, 2012, 12:10:57 AM
Reportedly there now are 'normal" and "special" merchant accounts:

> (00:52:52) MagicalTux: we have written consent from Dwolla, basically now Dwolla has "normal" merchant accounts, and "special" merchant accounts with extra requirements

 - http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/tp0xt/dwolla_changes_tos_to_prohibit_bitcoin

tl;dr: Another PayPal is born (in the negative sense):

You understand and agree that you will not engage in the following activities:
- Use the Dwolla system to operate or engage in any business regulated by FinCen, including the money service business;
- Use the Dwolla System without written consent in association with any online credit or virtual currency system;

YOU UNDERSTAND AND AGREE THAT YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS FUNDS HELD IN THE VERIDIAN HOLDING ACCOUNT IF YOUR USER ACCOUNT IS CLOSED, SUSPENDED, HAS A HOLD PLACED ON IT, OR IS OTHERWISE LIMITED, AS DETAILED IN THIS SECTION.

You understand and agree that the decision by Dwolla to take certain actions, including placing holds on or limiting access to Your User Account as detailed below, may be based on confidential criteria that are essential to risk management or security concerns. You understand and agree that neither Dwolla nor Veridian are under any obligation to disclose the details of its risk management or its security procedures to You.

- Place a Hold on Your User Account for Up to 90 days:
- Temporarily or Permanently Suspend or otherwise Limit Your Access to Your User Account:
- Contact Users who have purchased goods or services from You, contact Your bank or credit card issuer, and/or warn other Users, law enforcement, or impacted third parties of Your actions; or
- Take legal action against you

So I wonder what level of person-to-person transactions with Dwolla before they start freezing accounts.  How do we know which merchant accounts are "special" merchant accounts (and thus allowed) and which are not (and thus risks losing funds)?

Wow.
6365  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Any trustable e-wallet services? on: May 15, 2012, 11:57:16 PM
blockchain.info or strongcoin.com.  Key decryption is done in browser using javacript.  There is nothing for them to steal, lose, or have stolen.

Specifically, if the service goes offline (and you've sent yourself a recent backup) you still can use that wallet (offline mode, import into Multibit, for example).
6366  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Block size limit questions on: May 15, 2012, 11:54:27 PM
No. IIRC Mike Hearn supports moving most nodes to SPV.

Vocabulary / acronym of the day:

SPV - Simplified Payment Verification

6367  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question regarding anonymity on: May 15, 2012, 11:28:12 PM
There most likely wouldn't be a direct link unless Instawallet happened to choose the same coin for your spend transaction as what you deposited.  e..g.,  a deposit of 12.3456 BTC and then a spend of 12.3456 (or an amount in roughly the same range) a day later for instance, could possibly cause the same coin to be used.

If greater privacy is needed, use a combination fo wallets perhaps, in effect mix your self.  Or use a mixing service.

6368  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 25 Bitcoins vanished into the air suddently PLEASE HELP! on: May 15, 2012, 10:56:59 PM
But how in the world is it possible that 1Tcs13Fd6YXudzCx6vMjEmeZcC6LYTdxy was first generated into my blockchain.info account, and as soon as I sent money to it (and it still appeared  into my account)  I refreshed and it was gone?

Could it be that you created a wallet, then used "start a new wallet" and created another (and no longer have the link to the previous one)?  (or created one from a second browser / or one in incognito mode perhaps)?

If that is what happened, then you can get the link to it back via e-mail address.  (or use the alias if you created one)

piuk might even be able to find the link for the earlier one.

I'm guessing you didn't save a backup of the wallet, as that would have the address in it.

You could also try logging in from a different computer and having it pull a clean copy of the wallet to see if you get the same results.
6369  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Buy Bitcoins Directly? on: May 15, 2012, 10:47:03 PM
Very noob question, Is there any proven way to buy bitcoins directly online? Like with a credit card for example.

If you have a Scandinavian credit card:

This site apparently offers PayPal as a payment method.  They are new though so keep that in mind (check for history here on the forum):

Physical Bitcoin, paid for with PayPal [Update: credit card, not PayPal P2P]:

You might be able to buy a small amount this way, or using your mobile:

With VirWoX you can buy SLL using PayPal, then trade SLL for BTC:

The reason there are so few options with PayPal as payment is that PayPal expressly prohibits a merchant to use PayPal for the sale of Bitcoins.  Additionally, because the payment can be charged back easily, merchants that have some angle must charge a higher fee to do so.

6371  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Unable to send coins on: May 15, 2012, 10:29:30 PM
Im still unable to send them to my friend.

Is the problem that you are getting an error message when trying to send, or is it that your friend is saying that they are not arriving?

If the problem is the payment is not arriving, then check the blockchain to see if the transaction appears there.  If it does, then the problem is on your friend's end, not yours.

6372  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Wiki: Looking for administrators (step 1/2) on: May 15, 2012, 10:14:05 PM
if I had admin privileges, I'd be deleting them instead.

Is there any other method that can help to stop this wiki spam bot menace?

I know blogging commenting systems have a scoring tool to automatically quarantine spam-like or otherwise suspicious posts,

Looking at MediaWiki, they suggest:

6373  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Yet another Block Explorer on: May 15, 2012, 09:39:03 PM
Yes, the people want the firstbits so they can write them on their bodies.

True, amazing how well that use case demonstrates the utility of firstbits.

Can I ask WHY?

The description for the video reads:
"So I set my Single down on something sticking up by accident one day, and it caught the spinning fan blades and broke them off. I decided to fix it myself."
6375  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 0.6.2 and Ubuntu 12.04 not playing nice on: May 15, 2012, 08:17:57 PM
Just upgraded the client to 0.6.2 and the icon is no longer in the system tray (notification area?) when bitcoin is running.  It is also absent from the menu bar.  Hmmmm.  I guess I could choose to never minimize it but that doesn't seem practical.

Anyone?

The interaction with the menu bar is different in 0.6 (never shows as a running app), but the icon in the notification area (tray) works fine on my 11.04 so maybe there is something different with 12.04.

I did change the option "Minimize on close" (enabled it) so that I am not accidentally shutting down the program.  Does that cause the notification icon to appear perhaps?

Ya, since work has not yet begun on this forum software's successor,  I too would like to see a couple of the most painful issues resolved in the software currently used.

6378  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: mtgox so slow to process dwolla withdraws on: May 15, 2012, 05:58:42 AM
Mt. Gox has acknowledged that Dwolla is and remains a problem for them to be able to accommodate the withdrawal demand.

Mt. Gox isn't the only exchange that you can use to cash out for Dwolla.  Intersango is one.  Camp BX is another.  Camp BX will do an ACH withdrawal for you instead as well.  BitFloor is adding ACH withdrawal as well.
6379  Economy / Speculation / Re: Financial Risk Analytics-Subscription Service on: May 15, 2012, 05:52:27 AM
The service will cost 2.5 BTC per month.  Please try to send the payment during the last week of every month since a "month" will start on the first of the following month and the accounting will have to be done before then.

I can see why you might not want to offer shorter subscriptions than 1 month, but by not letting subscribers sign up on-demand, you might be missing them if they don't come back at the end of the month.

What you could do is allow a new subscription to pay for the days remaining of the current month (prorated) plus the full amount for the following month.
6380  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin client not downloading new blocks on: May 15, 2012, 05:23:37 AM
Thinking about deleting the database and letting it redownload, would that help?

It's blk0001.dat and blkindex.dat right?

Yup, that's the brute-force way.  delete those two and restart.

You might first want to try, for shits and giggles, -rescan
e.g.,  bitcoin-qt -rescan
