641  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dear Satoshi Nakamoto on: April 22, 2017, 07:29:15 PM
In some of the very old posts being discussed in this thread I saw some old posts by FreeMoney.  Does anyone have any idea what happened to him?  Since this is off topic you can respond to me in IM if you think that would be better.
642  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: newbie questions on: April 22, 2017, 07:23:15 PM
yes, he offered to help me out on this first transaction.

I paid him already, 2 days ago and also provided him with my bitcoin address, checking on blockchain website my bitcoin address still shows:

No. Transactions   0
Total Received   0 BTC
Final Balance   0 BTC

does not look good for sure

Who did you pay?  What was his username?
How did you pay him?  PayPal?
Did he already get the payment?
When did you give him your Bitcoin address?
643  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: newbie questions on: April 22, 2017, 06:40:35 PM

- using my bitcoin address (I do not have his) I should be able to see that pending transaction ?
Yes.  But the comment "I do not have this" worries me.  Why do you not have it?  You most definitely should have it, after all you must have sent the address to the person who was suppose to transfer Bitcoins to the address.

Simplest way for us to help you:  Post the Bitcoin address here and we can help you see what is happening.

I sent funds using another payment method, I did not need his bitcoin address to send the funds, only his email which I have (and I guess that you cannot know a bitcoin address if you know someone's email)

Where can I be more informed about what is and how to use an escrow?
I'm a newbie, it is my first transaction so of course I have no feedback and because of that I am willing to pay a higher fee but as far as I understand using an escrow will imply an additional fee to a third party?

So now it sounds like you paid him, or are in the process of paying him.  Then you will need to send him a Bitcoin address so he can send you the Bitcoins you paid for.  I think he is trying to help you out.  What Bitcoin wallet are you planning on using (where are you going to keep your Bitcoins when you receive them)?
644  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: newbie questions on: April 22, 2017, 06:10:36 PM
- if he has already instructed the transfer of bitcoin to me, even if it has to go through verifications, is this transaction "unconfirmed" ?
Yes it should show up on the blockchain as unconfirmed.

- if that is the case, then we should be able to cancel the deal and he could revert back the funds I've sent him (minus the fees required for that transfer).
Well if he has already sent the Bitcoins to your address then it cannot be reversed.  I assume that is what you meant by "if he has already instructed the transfer of bitcoin to me", that is not reversible.
645  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is Bitcoin price so much higher on Bitfinex? on: April 21, 2017, 10:32:30 PM
Because it is currently very hard to get your currency (USD for example) out of Bitfinex due to some issues with their banking relationship.  This leads to increased pressure to BUY Bitcoins in order to move the Bitcoins of of the Bitfinex platform.  Since there is extra pressure to buy the price goes up.

Is it still safe to put money into Bitfinex Burt? (as you were endorsing a few days ago)

Or have you changed that position now Bitfinex is looking even more questionable than when you suggested it was still safe?
If they get their banking relationship all worked out then no problem.  If they cannot get their banking relationship fixed then not so good.  We will see.

This is strange.  Why can't I quote posts from this thread?  Never had that problem before.  It says:

I have been here for years and have never had this problem.

I will speak to any organization.  This issues crosses all political lines.  In fact almost everyone, except law enforcement, is against civil asset forfeiture.

Do not worry.  That is correct behavior.

Every time you spend Bitcoins all the Bitcoins from the source address are used and the address is thrown away.  Kind of like spending a $1000 bill.

The amount you spend is sent to the receiver's address.

The change is sent back to you on a new change address.

Change addresses come from a different list of addresses inside your Trezor than your normal receive addresses.

Your Trezor is operating correctly.
650  Economy / Goods / Re: WTB a TREZOR Metallic on: April 20, 2017, 04:43:41 AM
Wow, honored to have you comment on this! Your version would make it more valuable, but as you said "[you've] been through so much together."

Fucking Feds, of course they'd keep their seized coins on a stolen/confiscated Trezor. Were your coins part of the stash that where stolen by Feds (from the Feds)?

If you happen to come across a metallic, I'm still interested.

Btw, are you in Colorado?

The Bitcoins I forfeited were combined with a boatload of coins from the Silk Road seizure into a 2,719.32669068 BTC lot and auctioned off by the US Marshals service (you can read about it here).  I had nothing to do with Silk Road they just combined the BTC they took from me with the BTC they got in that case.  The agents that got caught by their masters with their hand in the cookie jar was not my case - that was related to the Silk Road case.

Yes, I am in Colorado.  Speaking tomorrow night.
651  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Was this judge killed by 'law enforcers'? on: April 20, 2017, 04:29:37 AM
Things are certainly changing in the United States

I certainly agree with that.  However in context:

Things are certainly changing in the United States, but there will probably have to be some catalyst that causes awareness of the problem to reach a certain level. Is it possible this judge might be a part of that?

It appears you think things are changing for the better.  I disagree.  In fact I expect things to get much much worse before there is any chance of things getting better.

I speak all the time about what happened to me and my family and the evils of our self funding police force through civil asset forfeiture.  In fact I am speaking tomorrow night.  However, there is little sign that things are getting better.  The last two state legislatures that PASSED civil asset forfeiture reform in their states were vetoed by their respective governors.  Trump and his AG are both pro the self funded police state.  The current legislation to reform or eliminate this evil and unconstitutional practice has little hope of success.  There are just too many people in law enforcement "on the take" when it comes to taking citizens assets for their coffers.

Now that they are self funded to the tune of billions of dollars a year they no longer need to answer to the checks and balances that were built into our constitution.  Local law enforcement use these "free" funds to militarize their police forces - and this is the root of the problem.  They are becoming an occupying army rather than a police force.

652  Economy / Goods / Re: WTB a TREZOR Metallic on: April 20, 2017, 04:10:24 AM
I have one.

Mine is special because it was seized by Homeland Security and it took me 9 months and almost $250,000 in legal fees and donations to the federal civil asset forfeiture fund to get it back.  Would that make it more or less valuable???

As far as I know it has never been dropped, unless the homeland security or customs agents that handled it dropped it.  When I got it back I wiped it and started over - just in case.  It still works.  No problems with the buttons.

It really has a lot of sentimental value to me since we have been through so much together so I cannot see parting with it at this time.

BTW when I got my stuff back I saw that homeland security keeps the Bitcoins they seize in their various "funding raids" on their own Trezor.  It was a plastic first edition that they seized from someone else before they arrested me.

I went back and dug up a bunch of clams from my old wallets.  Cool.

Question, there are these two web sites:

http://clamcoin.org/

http://clamclient.com/

Which one is the correct web site?

It is confusing.  I am worried one is a scam.
654  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Looks like Bitcoin will remain as it is for life on: April 18, 2017, 07:11:36 PM
As long as the value remains, the price continues to increase, people continue to use it as a store of value, no fatal flaws are found, I see no reason to change it.  Just leave it as is.

Other coins can become the everyday "currency" coins you use to buy coffee.

Bitcoin works just fine as it is for storing and transferring relatively large sums of money/value.

The problem with that is.... Will mining and the status quo or even a reduction in miners fees be sustainable, if people only use Bitcoin for a

store of value? We need a significant increase in transactions to replace the Block reward in the future and that will never happen if we only use

Bitcoin to transfer large sums of money.  Roll Eyes
But there are two ways to replace the current block fee subsidy:

1) A lot of transaction with a lower fee per transaction

OR

2) The same number of transactions (capped at 3 TPS) but with a much larger fee per transaction.

If we do not remove the transaction cap, and we want to pay for the level of security we currently have then the fees / transaction will have to go up to the point that they replace the current subsidy.

So more transactions is not the only way to accomplish this.
655  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Hey idiots & low iqs; This is a nuclear bomb... on: April 18, 2017, 07:07:58 PM
Isn't it ironic that we try to achieve peace by having weapons that can obliterate the world in a matter of minutes.
You contradict yourself. On the one hand you do not want nuclear weapons because it can destroy the whole world, and on the other hand you are opposed to destroy the enemy until he has a chance to destroy the world.

So you would be for attacking North Korea? gotta destroy the enemy before he has a chance to destroy the world.
Whether you, I or any other random nobody on a forum in the backwaters of the Internet wants to or not it appears that president Trump probably will bomb North Korea at some point.  It appears he is just that kind of guy.  All it would take is for one of his many scandals to spin out of control to the point he needs something to distract everyone from his and/or his people's shenanigans.

Why were they after you and did you get your BTC back?

You can read all about it at my wife's and my web sites here:

http://www.jmwagner.com/
http://www.burtw.com/

I was arrested for trading Bitcoins on localbitcoins.com without a license.  Official charge:  operating a money transmittal business without a license.

In the end they dropped all the criminal charges against me, dropped all the civil charges against the seized assets (including my Bitcoins), kept $80,000 in cash and Bitcoins for the federal asset forfeiture fund - to be used by the justice department and homeland security to fund future operations, and gave me back the rest.

I have given many talks to various organizations since this happened to me.  I have two upcoming talks in the Denver area.  You are invited to join us if you are interested:

http://www.burtw.com/speaking-schedule.html

Be sure to check out the link on that page to John Oliver's expose on civil asset forfeiture.  It explains a lot about why I and so many others are targeted: money to fund their operations.

If all charges were dropped then how can they keep some assets back. What happened to the constitution. Called due process.
Watch the John Oliver explanation of Civil Asset Forfeiture and then you will know more about what happened to the constitution, due process, and a boatload of other myths and legends you currently believe.

I will give you a real world example:

Everyone has see the reading of the Miranda rights on TV cop shows at least 10,000 times.

When I was arrested I was handed a clipboard and a pen and the homeland security agent simply said "here, sign this".  I took a quick look and it was a waiver of all Miranda rights.  That was it.  No "you have the right..." like you see on TV - NONE.  I refused to sign.  He immediately took everything he was going to share with me - including the reason I was being arrested - off the table.

I was not told why I was being arrested until after having spent 24 hours in the Denver county jail.

Wake up from your sweet cultural hallucinations of "constitution", "due process" and "rights".

I'm sorry but i'm not an american... this doesn't happen in my country. Forfeiture is only done after a criminal is found guilty and can only take the assets funded by the said crime.
What country is that?  I am looking for a new one.

High security is only possible because of high revenue to miners, which in turn is caused by demand.  If you remove the component of the demand that is caused by people wanting to transact on a smaller scale, the demand decreases, the revenue decreases, and the security decreases, which can lead to even less demand and a downward spiral.

We shall see.  But I have started to become convinced that a 3 TPS system could possibly work.  The fees will have to be high and it would not be used for anything but higher value transactions.  I can envision a system where, due to the high fees, people put their savings in and only take out what they need when they need it - maybe a few transactions per year.

3 TPS does give us 3 x 31,622,400 = 94,867,200 transaction per year.

I do understand your argument.  I do understand the demand side issues.  I do not know of a way to prove it will be sustainable at 3 TPS so I guess we will just have to see how this great experiment turns out.

One thing we can both agree on:  at 3 TPS Bitcoin will never be the everyday currency of large portion of the population.
