This is the sort of thing than can start a major war.Rebels fighting against Ukraine and supplied by Russia are the suspects. Bodies reported all over the ground for miles. What a tragedy.  But how can Russia afford to arm the rebels when the country is suffering from crushing sanctions?
The Russian rebels deny they are Russian or funded by Russians and yes, this act by rebels could justify Russia invading Ukraine just like rebels  in crimea justified their takeover of crimea and the forced election.
It's also possible that it was an accident. Russian insurgents in Ukraine have been firing anti-aircraft missiles at Ukrainian fighter jets, so who knows. But an airliner looks nothing like a fighter jet or even a bomber.Exactly. I suspect that Russia may use the same excuse. We shall see. After all, Obama is no threat.
Shot at 33,000 feet in the sky?  I don't think this was any accident.  The odds would be astronomical.
It was suggested that the heat seeking missles go for the largest target so if the rebels/Russians had targeted a smaller military plane the missile may have gone after the larger commercial plane without any way of stopping it. The latest opinions are leaning heavily toward Russia. With all of the US and international satellites in the area we should be able to get definitive info. And of course since everyone is denying they shot a missile it could have been a bomb on board.
644  Other / Politics & Society / Re: econ fagz, would estate tax solve income inequality? on: July 18, 2014, 04:14:19 PM
There is a lot I do not understand about the "inequality" crowd. For one, what equality are they concerned with? Equality of opportunity or equality of outcomes? In my view, no form of government or economy has ever designed a way to provide for equality of outcomes, and those that have tried have failed miserably. And market capitalism, especially American market capitalism, has proven time and time again to provide the best equality of opportunity while at the same time increasing general prosperity.

The other thing I do not understand is what I will call the "Pinketty solution." Pinketty correctly identifies a problem: return on capital is higher than general growth (r>g), so the rich get richer while the laboring classes' wages do not increase as quickly. But his solution is perverse: a punitive tax (80%) on all income over $500,000. I think we can all agree that this will have the effect of reducing the number of capitalists in the world. How can this be a good thing? If returns on capital exceed general growth, shouldn't the goal be to create more capitalists, not less?

Ok, this one IS for you, Rigon - what do you think Obama should be doing about the Ukranian/Russian problem?
I said Obama is no threat. I have no opinion on what he should do now, because he has already lost the respect of the rest of the world. When he kissed Russia's ass with his idiot 'reset', and took away the European missile defense system, he threw away his leverage at the same time. He's your guy, not mine.
Well, that's a cowardly copout. You trash the President, suggesting that he won't do anything, but when asked what you think he should do, you have nothing. Sounds an awful lot like you'd be no more of a threat than Obama is.  All you can do is criticize and tear down. You never have anything remotely constructive to offer to any conversation.
647  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Malaysia Airlines MH17 Crash: Boeing 777 Crashed in Ukraine Near Russian Border on: July 18, 2014, 03:46:46 PM
Sen. John McCain said Thursday that he is withholding judgment on the Malaysia Airlines crash, but vowed that there would be “hell to pay” if the plane was shot down by the Russian military or separatists.

“To leap to conclusions could be very embarrassing and really inappropriate until we have more information,” the Arizona Republican told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell shortly after reports that a commercial flight carrying 295 people was shot down in the eastern part of Ukraine.

After again noting that he has not yet arrived at any conclusions, the senator said: “But if it is the result of either separatist or Russian actions mistakenly believing this was a Ukrainian war plane, I think there’s going to be hell to pay and there should be.”

“It has the earmarks of a tragic mistake made by someone who had the capability to just shoot down an aircraft, and we know at least from the last couple of weeks that that could be Russian or separatist Russian capability,” he said.

McCain on Thursday said the increased sanctions were “helpful” but that the administration’s response has failed Ukraine.

“The sanctions so far in exchange for Crimea have been miniscule,” he said, referring to the sanctions the administration announced after the Russian annexation of the Crimean peninsula. “These latest enacted by the Obama administration, I think, are helpful. But if you ask the Ukrainian government that’s struggling, they would say they need weapons with which to defend themselves.”

McCain said that he anticipated he will have more information within the next several hours.

I googled mc cains response and found the below statement on msnbc and he makes no mention of the things you accused him of saying so could you post a link to his statement you found so offensive because he was jumping the gun? Often times liberals hear things and read things that get distorted somewhere, somehow so could you post a link and some quotes? I don't like mc cain and that link would simply give me proof that my opinion of him is correct.

This is just a thought I a will admit that their is no evidence of this idea.  But their are a lot of people that want a world war. Perhaps this was done by some idiots that want the war to expand and bring about the rapture faster.
And right on cue, stupid-ass John McCain jumps into the fray - talking about the US sending arms in.  We don't even know for sure that this airliner was shot down as opposed to crashing because of other problems.

STFU, McCain. Why can't the knee-jerk conservatives ever learn to get the facts FIRST?

I'd read it but it sounds like its long and i'm not THAT interested in the whole thing. whatever my opinion is, it has exactly zero effect on how the situation play out in the real world. all i can do is trust certain peoples opinions and what they say over others, and question things when they seem suspect.
651  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Israel: Operation Protective Edge on: July 18, 2014, 03:03:31 PM
We have seen such reports (which Israel generally refuses to partake in) such as the Goldstein Report from Operation Cast Lead.
Actually Goldstone went back on his report:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Fact_Finding_Mission_on_the_Gaza_Conflict#Goldstone.27s_retraction_of_civilian_targeting_claim

On 1 April 2011, Goldstone published a piece in The Washington Post titled 'Reconsidering the Goldstone Report on Israel and war crimes'. Goldstone noted that the subsequent investigations by Israel and recognized in the U.N. committee's report "indicate that civilians were not intentionally targeted as a matter of policy" while "the crimes allegedly committed by Hamas were intentional goes without saying."

this shit is complicated and it seems hard to know whats true and whats not sometimes

important to add:
Hina Jilani, one of the four writers of the "Goldstone Report", noted when asked if the report should allegedly be changed: "Absolutely not; no process or acceptable procedure would invalidate the UN Report; if it does happen, it would be seen as a 'suspect move'." Also another of the four co-writers, Irish international criminal investigations expert Desmond Travers, noted: 'the tenor of the report in its entirety, in my opinion, stands'. Also Goldstone maintained that, although the one correction should be made, he had "no reason to believe any part of the report needs to be reconsidered at this time" and that he didn't plan to pursue nullifying the report.
652  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Tea Party explained: a religious movement on: July 18, 2014, 02:46:26 PM
The Teabaggers do seem to go beyond the ordinary ideological sticks-in-the-mud, I am reading a book by Pat Buchanan right now about how Nixon united the GOP in 1964-68 and even he understood at the time the necessity of bending a bit with the wind. But the Teabaggers are so rigid that they can only be described as "stiffnecked" in the sense of the Jews who stuck their necks out to be hacked by the Romans rather than submit to the desecration of the temple by Roman totems to the Emperor.

And speaking of the English Civil War and the Glorious Revolution,

Washington is seen in the same way Protestant fire-breathers once saw Rome: a seat of corruption that has betrayed the pillars of the faith.

Titus Oates, late in the reign of Charles II, is famed for having ginned up a wild conspiracy of Catholics to assassinate the King and install a regime of "popery" on the nation. His accusations were beyond absurd, Charles himself questioned him and laughed at him as an idiot, but the fears and hysteria of the arch-protestants made them willing to believe anything, no matter how idiotic, due to their fears of Catholicism.

Sound familiar? Look at how the 'baggers today view Washington, with that same ultimate paranoia that makes them willing to believe anything they are fed by the modern day Titus Oates--whether they be the Limbaughs, the Becks, the Fox News, no matter how hysterical or outlandish the accusations get, the fanatics--whether 'baggers or archprotestants, are willing to believe them.

I think the psychology between the 'baggers and the archreligious is the same, the only difference really is the object of their hatred and fear.

There are huge deposits off the east coast.   They have from time to time created massive waves and serious destruction that travels across oceans.  Its only a matter of time.  I have no idea where flood legends come from.
654  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Malaysia Airlines MH17 Crash: Boeing 777 Crashed in Ukraine Near Russian Border on: July 18, 2014, 01:51:12 PM
I think if Obama is smart, he won't be pointing too many fingers at the Russians or threatening even more sanctions and if anyone recalls, our own USS Vincent blew an Iranian commercial passenger plane out of the sky and we ended up apologizing profusely about our own mistake claiming the dicey situation in the Persian Gulf contributed to the tragedy. This is not a time for Obama to tweak the Russian nose with sanctimonious condemnations.
655  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Malaysia Airlines MH17 Crash: Boeing 777 Crashed in Ukraine Near Russian Border on: July 18, 2014, 12:43:17 PM
They will cover it until it is known what happened. CNN's reporting on any given topic is negatively correlated with the amount of accurate information available on that topic.
Sounds about right, also sounds about right for our other major TV news networks like MSNBC and Fox; even CBS and ABC even if they have a decent program here and there.
It sounded like several times on CNN it was said that some pro-Russian separatists were showing off that they captured a Buk weapons system from a base in Ukraine. Can anyone verify this?

Yeah I dont understand it as well, but It makes sense.

To JC I was not attacking you, I was stating that I was confirmed and I have that post as proof.  Im also on the list and I even got a PM two days ago that he was going to pay me yesterday.  I have that as well.  I stood here till july 9th for uptown advertising a few extra days more.  I did fulfill the contract and days over,  I am owed .33 btc for the whole month, I believe is more but im claiming what is fair.

As of Today I still did not get payment, I will continue to pursue the payment, since I did give a couple of extra days of free advertising.

I also saw updown.bt promise you payment.. but that was days ago.
What has happened since then?  Has he not been responding to your PMs?

Thank you for your concern on the issue, but as of today I have not receive 1 bitcent from the time he promised me.   I been waiting patiently and have not taken action to put a negative feedback on his profile, so I am still giving time but my patience will likely run out

We have seen such reports (which Israel generally refuses to partake in) such as the Goldstein Report from Operation Cast Lead.

It is also the administration's job to provide supporting evidence that the targets that it is choosing are of military value (when questioned). If they can't do that, then they shouldn't be bombing civilian targets. Yet, Israeli administrations tend not to cooperate with such fact finding missions.
probably because nothing happens when they don't. also do you mean goldstone? if not link to info about goldstein report?
660  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Israel: Operation Protective Edge on: July 17, 2014, 05:59:52 PM
Hamas is more than just an armed brigade it consists of political and civil service wings as well and targeted people specifically for their political affiliation is a war crime as well. Anything associated with Hamas isn't militarily fair game. There is no military benefits to bombing empty homes of civilian infrastructure.
It is not the same because Israelis are not welcoming people to use their homes as launch sites or bases of operation. One you do that, your home is not a home it is military complex and should be dealt with as a military target.Israel, the United States, Canada, the European Union, Jordan, Egypt and Japan to name a few all classify Hamas as a terrorist organization. It should be treated as a terrorist organization.
Civilians are civilians, just because Israel has compulsory military duty for many of its citizens doesn't open those citizens up to being targeted with violence when they aren't actively serving. That isn't a good excuse for Hamas and it isn't a good excuse for Israel. And yet it is still a recognized war crime to bomb a Hamas soup kitchen .
There is a difference between an service member sitting peacefully in his home with his wife and kids, watching the sunday game and having cookouts in the backyard VS someone who has his family sit around kitchen table and help load and plan the next rocket firing.

One is civilian and the other is a military target.
Let me know when you have evidence that everyone in Gaza is secretly an armed revolutionary that engages in terrorist activities.
Let me know when you have evidence that every home in Gaza is loaded with weapons and bombs.
Well, that's complicated right? if the accusation is that israel is partaking in war crimes or crimes against humanity then actually the burden of proof goes in the other direction.

In the same way, when israel accuses hamas of a war crime or crime against humanity, they should have evidence, otherwise its just a baseless accusation. ........oh yea i remember them in 2006.
