Creating a Bitcoin client that fully implements the network protocol is extremely difficult. Bitcoin-Qt is the only known safe implementation of a full node. Some other projects attempt to compete, but it is not recommended to use such software for anything serious. (Lightweight clients like Electrum and MultiBit are OK.)

You can download the Bitcoin bootstrap torrent to speed up the process of syncing. The torrent will speed up the process, however it won't complete instantly.

Quote
Who wants bootstrap.dat?

Anyone bringing up a new node using the reference client.  This is one method of accelerating the initial blockchain download process, while helping the bitcoin P2P network by offloading data download traffic from public P2P nodes.

This download is not for those who are already running the bitcoin client.

6462  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Trading BTC on localbitcoins.com on: January 15, 2015, 01:17:45 AM
You would need to comply to your countries laws. Although, I believe most countries don't have any restrictions on age for trading Bitcoin. However, exchanges and other sites may have legal requirements to restrict/prevent minors from trading Bitcoin, this will be seen on their TOS.

However, I'm not familar with localbitcoins TOS, and can't tell you if it's allowed to trade as a minor on that site. However, what concerns me is at your age. You could potentially be breaking paypal TOS. Unless, other countries have different TOS regarding Paypal. But, in the UK only 18 years and older can register to Paypal.

Although, like others have suggested; Don't use Paypal to trade with Bitcoin, chargebacks can be done up to 180 days I believe. (it might be more)
6463  Other / Off-topic / Re: If ethics were forgotten, what scientific advances could we be likely to see? on: January 14, 2015, 11:31:40 PM
Define ethics?

I actually think ethics has helped mankind get as far as it has. Without ethics (or with less ethics), there would be even more quackery in medicine, and more pseudo-science, because people would have even less qualms about promoting bullshit for the sake of money.

I was hoping someone brought this up, it's a valid point and I've touched upon in some of my discussions, I don't have any arguments against it. It seems whenever I've brought this up, people seem to brush it off and tell me "Don't be so silly".
6464  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gentlemen, it is time. on: January 14, 2015, 04:01:18 PM
I would buy more, but I've hit my bank limit. What a shame.

The next few days are going to be littered with these bloody posts.
6465  Other / Off-topic / Re: Who is coming to funeral of Bitcoin |RIP BITCOIN on: January 14, 2015, 03:40:13 PM
Its almost dead as it compared to 1000$ at one stage

It's alive compared to the $1 that it was at one stage.
6466  Other / Off-topic / If ethics were forgotten, what scientific advances could we be likely to see? on: January 14, 2015, 01:52:10 PM
I've had discussions about this over the years, and I'm always intrigued by the answers people give. Recently, I saw a similar question over at reddit, which made me think about it again, and maybe ask fellow Bitcoiners the same question, as most of the answers & discussions were trolling and you know Bitcoiners are suppose to be smarter than the average joe....(?)

So, please discuss. I'm going to stay out of the debate & just listen to others responses.

Here's the one at reddit if you want to check out some responses: Link

Here are some snippets from the reddit post:

Human cloning.

Social experiments! This is the area that ethics retards the most as there is no real substitute for human experimentation. If we were willing to raise childern especially for controlled experiments we could generate enormous amounts of data on human interactions, under spesific circumstances.

If all ethical boundaries were removed we could potentially see the average life expectancy of the world go up
6467  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Created a new paper wallet is there a safe way to print off private keys? on: January 14, 2015, 12:53:59 PM
Boot up a LiveCD, like ubuntu for example. Then connect your computer to your printer via a USB then print.
6468  Other / Meta / Re: Reports on: January 13, 2015, 10:41:06 PM
I always have a look at the modlog/deletion log whenever I want to see if it was dealt with or not. Unless it's simply a moved topic or any other action which isn't broadcast on the modlog.

I was surprised to see myself with 99% accuracy yesterday on my 1142 reports. Then, I screw it up within a few hours and go back down to 98%. Really accuracy doesn't really mean much, as long as you have the majority, then It shouldn't  be any problem .Smiley

While the topic is up and we are apparently in a good mood for a few seconds, any chance that posts like this[1] could become a regular thing?

Could be a nice feature, hopefully when the new forum in up and running, we will have greater access to a wide range of user stats.

Is it a open bar?

Come on seriously, your going to admit defeat at the 6th hurdle? We've only got a few more to go. This is not a fall, this is a stumble

6470  Other / Meta / Re: Getting DDOSED ? on: January 13, 2015, 06:40:24 PM
What happened?
site was down for couple hours, what was that all about?
Literally answered in this thread before both of you.

Migration testing ended up running an import script on the server ended up taking up way too much resources on the server. We are figuring out a better way to not starve the production box. This wasn't because of a DDOS.
6471  Other / Meta / Re: Getting DDOSED ? on: January 13, 2015, 06:14:27 PM
Might of been Theymos doing some maintenance. He did suggest we might seen some downtime recently: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=907951.0

Considering the message which was prompted, it probably was him changing a few things.
6472  Other / Meta / Re: Please give another section to ponzis... on: January 13, 2015, 02:16:14 PM
I don't just blame the people who make them, I blame everyone taking part in them. Most people know exactly what they are and how they work. They don't care if they are promoting a scam scheme, as long as they get their money back. I tend to think any gambling is stupid, but Ponzi schemes are one leap beyond stupid.

Search up on google with "site:bitcointalk.org" then your keywords, most of your questions have more than likely been answered and discussed in detail.

No, What client do you use to store your wallet?
6475  Other / Meta / Re: Who owns this forum? on: January 12, 2015, 10:32:58 PM
why do you consider a great new service related to bitcoin as "spam"?

I am going a great thing for bitcoin and marketing it in a good way and I leave only happy people in my wake.

I'm a good person but these mods are the only thing holding me back from really making a difference in the bitcoin world.

I am not asking for anything from anyone.

I only offer my help and skills for free and the mods are trying to hold me back.

They aren't holding you back, you are holding yourself back, for not following the guidelines of the forum. It doesn't matter how much of an asset you are to the community, if you don't follow the guidelines you are going to be treated the same as any other person who has not followed the guidelines.

You are allowed to create an account to ask if you can be unbanned. However, you can only post inside Meta and only for this purposes. Everything else will be considered as ban evasion.
If any accounts that he previously used have been banned, then this could be considered as ban evasion as he has posted outside of meta.

Hope they get back to me soon.
If you don't get a response in a reasonable time, then you should take that as a no to your request/question.
6477  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: pgp on: January 12, 2015, 08:33:44 PM
If you want to learn how to use PGP or just learn the basic concepts a good place to start is here. Although, some of the links are outdated, if you search it up you will find it located in a different site but, with the same information.
6478  Economy / Lending / Re: [N] 0.15BTC loan for hosting fees. 10% interest in 3 days on: January 12, 2015, 05:25:35 PM
No, I don't.
My password was changed due to my account being in collateral recently.
Look at my loan address, I've been using it for over a month now for bitcointalk. IF I was an imposter, I don't see why I would use the same address as "the original owners" account, right?
Like I stated, it may well be for genuine reasons. However, the main point is there is no collateral involved. Are your hosting fees payable in Bitcoin only? If so, what is stopping you from buying Bitcoin from a exchange?
6479  Economy / Lending / Re: [N] 0.15BTC loan for hosting fees. 10% interest in 3 days on: January 12, 2015, 04:54:21 PM
Although this might be a genuine reason:

This user's password was reset recently.
Offering no collateral is genuinely a no go, no matter what rank, or past reputation. Are you 100% sure you haven't got any collateral what so ever?

6480  Other / Meta / Re: Changing motherf&%* avatars on: January 11, 2015, 05:38:00 PM
Why would you want to change a catvatar? Cry
Obviously, for a dogvatar...That was truly pathetic, please forgive me.

Changing avatars is currently not possible.

Seeing this message for a year already.

Can anybody fix this? It shouldn't be THAT hard for Christ's sake!
Changing avatars won't be possible until the new forum is live. New forum software for discussion and list of features. The ability to upload custom avatars was abused by a exploit allowing a user to inject code.
