6561  Economy / Speculation / Re: Whales, here why crashing the price is a good idea on: September 10, 2013, 07:41:21 PM
I don't understand. You mean the whales should sell at a cheaper price?
If I did this and sold say 3k BTC for $100/ instead of $130/  I would receive $300,000. That is leaving $90,000 on the table. Why would I do that? That is not how you get to be a whale.

Yes and Atheism is also a religion. I quite sure some of you have noticed it already.  Grin
So atheism is a religion? A religion without a God or a supernatural force of any kind? That would mean it is not a religion. I don't go to an atheist church, and atheists are not looking for converts to keep our mega church in gold.
I have met a man in the Guatemalan jungles who fervently believed that the world rested on the back of a turtle. Yet, he laughed at city people for believing that God lived among the clouds. "You can't stand on a cloud", he explained. "They are just water and cannot support your weight". It was easy for him to see the impossibility of a God he did not believe in, but he was completely blind to his own superstitions. That is religion.
6563  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The problem with atheism. on: September 10, 2013, 04:27:40 PM
What God(s) are best to worship? There are so many to choose from, how does one go about deciding?
6564  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Assault weapon bans on: September 10, 2013, 04:25:37 PM
Sure, but unfortunately, it's the individuals who wish to own and carry guns which are the primary reason for arming criminals with guns. If all of you guys weren't so gun happy, then guns wouldn't be manufactured and sold into the population at the levels they are. But go on, keep sending out the message that we need guns!
I don't say that. I am choosing to carry for my own protection. I will not defend a stranger with my gun and I don't care what others do. But I am going home tonight.

For the record, Rassah was on my short list.

The truth is that we had a large number of great candidates....great candidates who are and will continue to be great stewards of the community. ...
+1 That's the best news of all.  Smiley

Thanks for mentioning that bg002h.

For me, atheism is not a choice about philosophy. It is simply that there is no evidence of Gods. I am an atheist for the same reason I do not believe in unicorns.
6567  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Foundation Board Election Details Announced on: September 09, 2013, 04:17:06 PM
Apparently there aren't a lot of voters at all in this thing: https://electionbuddy.com/elections/9452/results/sdq6pd958

Elizabeth only got 84, and Joerg only got 47. We get that many voters on some of our rather silly polls around here. Admittedly, one of the big reasons I don't like Elizabeth is because her campaign seems to be more about winning a popularity contest than about actual issues. She posts a lot, but much of it is "wow, bitcoin is great." And sure, she matches with some of our general beliefs, but so does everyone else who is anywhere near libertarian politically. There's not much more than "yeah, I agree with what you said" in her writing. I also just can't see her doing much more than supporting the Bitcoin Foundation in their lobbying and working within US only endeavors. So, my next vote I'll be supporting Joerg, who not only seems to understand why bitcoin might need government support, but also why it can survive in spite of it, and can see where we may be headed with it in the future, and even if Joerg doesn't win, I would support him starting up his own Euro-centric foundation as well.
I think you are right, it looks like only about 40% voted. Just like a government election, lol.
I do support Elizabeth, however I see what your saying about being America-centric. In future elections to the board I would like see more representatives from Europe, Asia, Africa, etc.
6568  Other / Off-topic / Re: god bless paypal on: September 09, 2013, 04:06:00 PM
Earning interest on frozen funds seems to be part of their business model.
Avoid paypal, use bitcoin.
I think you are on to something here. The original business model PayPal was going to use had them making their money only on the float. Then came the fees and now apparently hostage taking.
Bitcoin for the win!

Congrats to Elizabeth !!
Glad to see such a strong showing for her. She really is an impressive addition to the foundation.

6571  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is a good substantial post? on: September 04, 2013, 08:14:09 PM
AI's might want to skip this thread. Wink

Would this question count as a substantial post? Or would I need to put in some more effort to unlock the first post achievement?

If this question does count, I want to apologize to any AI that did continue, but then, I did warn you.
Unless you're Skynet. In which case, could you please be so kind to let the world know I disabled you?

I think if your post only included the question it may not be "substantial" enough. However the additional sentences make it long enough to count.
Oh, and welcome!

Exactly. If you are worried, look at the code yourself. Open source means nothing is hidden from you in the code.

It does not prevent to get scammed.
And if you use an escrow, it does not really matter.

You do not get scammed if you deal with trusted people.
He still has some good advice in there. But cash attracts crooks.

.....
EDIT: I would find a fact of someone raping my daughter as a threat on her life and act accordingly. Later I would put a knife in hands of dead rapist Smiley.
This is a tricky one for people. Rape is horrible, however it is not on par with murder. Force can only be proportional and killing is not a proportional response. You would face murder charges for protecting your virginity by killing someone. It is common misconception about our rights as conceal carriers. We can't draw our weapons unless someone is about to die. No exceptions.

I don't read your statements as being in line with any of the several state statutes which I am familiar with.

First, you assert "we can't draw our weapons unless someone is about to die.  No exceptions."

But that's not the way the law is worded because it does not create actionable guidance.

Rephrase it as "threat of serious bodily injury" and maybe add "imminent" and yo have more realistic wording.  But then your prior assertion is falsified.

Rape is horrible, however it is not on par with murder. Force can only be proportional and killing is not a proportional response. You would face murder charges for protecting your virginity by killing someone.

And this statement is simply false.  But if you are referring to killing someone after the act is completed, then yeah, that shouldn't be done and would be murder.

Your right about my word choice, it does not say that "someone has to die" lol.
But it is illegal to un-holster where I live. The only exception is when defending yourself and since you can only defend your life with proportional force, it is an effective rule of thumb. Here the "threat of bodily injury" is not a high enough benchmark unless it is reasonable to believe that the injuries could result in death. So if someone punches you in the face you can't just shoot them in the face as a response.
The rape example was drilled into our heads in class. Rape and murder laws are state laws and vary in definition. In some places it may be legal to stop a rapist with a bullet. I was taught that in Wisconsin you will go to jail for such an action. Rape is bad, it can cause physical trauma and will likely cause emotional trauma that will last for years. But you can't kill someone legally for making you feel bad. You can however fight back, and if the fight escalates into a life threatening fight, then you can use deadly force.

I almost forgot about booze. What about drunk people doing stupid things? Mostly accidents of course.
True that. Bring booze into the mix and violence is likely to increase. perhaps it should be banned again?

And on a side note - that thing in the news, about a kid shooting his grandma and GTA being to blame? How the fuck did he get his little hands on a gun? Any updates?
Amen. Whoever owns that gun should face charges.

About a criminal entering your house - I think most of you would be nervous/anxious/scared enough to pull a trigger first, rather than ask questions. Imagine a burglar next to your daughter room. And also they would not stand there waiting for you to call the police, best case scenario they would run off in other direction, worst case - in yours.
I have nothing against shooting a criminal on your property, even if he dies, he kinda deserves that. But there's a problem, where someone might shoot an innocent person in their house and claim it as robbery attempt.
That could happen. I have heard of people shooting through doors for example. However, I think of my carry gun as a responsibility and a right. If I shot an innocent person then I should go to jail. An accident is not excusable. Your life must be in immediate danger. You can't shoot just because someone was robbing you or raping your daughter. That is not a threat on her life.
I would guess that trying to make it look like a robbery has very little chance of working. The police know a lot about that subject and will know what to look for.
But when an armed intruder is in your house threating you, throwing your gun out the window so that no one is accidentally shot is bad form.

@Rampion
You might be surprised at how much we agree on. I despise violence. I have had the misfortune of seeing a lot of it in various wars around th world. War is when society pulls together to make great things, then smashes all those things to dust. It brings sadness and pain to all involved. I protested against the Afghan invasion when George Bush had 80% approval and the country was in a state of war fever. Nobody hates war more than those who have seen it.
I also lived in St. Louis when it was the murder capitol. I have had neighbors killed, a friend shot by a 13yr. old crack user. The day I moved into my apartment I picked up a handful of 7.62x39 casings on the sidewalk. Still, I feel compassion for those criminals. I think we can do a lot to help them make other choices that will benefit us all.
But at the end of the day, if faced with a threat of death. I would gun down anyone for attempting to kill me. It's not malice, it's a calculation. Do what you want, be who you are, but do not try to kill me. That is all I ask from people.
6579  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Assault weapon bans on: August 29, 2013, 05:31:53 PM
I pretty much agree - guns are just inanimate objects (with only one purpose: to kill), and its just stupid to put the blame on inanimated objetcs - the blame is on individuals committing the crimes. The amount of privately owned guns in the US is a cause and reflection of its violent culture, dominated by fear and greed. Gun-lovers are not helping at all to change that culture, though.
With the exception of my CCW, my guns are not for killing. I am not a hunter and I shoot only paper targets. My guns have not "caused" me to be more violent. Guns don't do that. If they did then Montana would be the deadliest place in the U.S. and Chicago would be a peaceful utopia. In fact the opposite is true.
It is also true that since the mid 1990's Americans have expanded their right to carry throughout the U.S. That same period has seen an unprecedented drop in violent crime. America now has less violent crime than it ever has.
6580  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Assault weapon bans on: August 29, 2013, 04:27:24 PM
The simple fact is the reason there are so many mass killings in the U.S isn't because of 'guns' it's because an unfortunately large number of people in your country is made up of the most extremely insecure, racist, homophobic, stupid, arrogant, paranoid, schizophrenic, self-righteous sociopaths I have ever seen.

That sounds like the demographic that most craves having guns.
And then there is the real world. I'm a liberal, gay loving, race mixing, overeducated atheist.  Generalizing is a path to wrong answers, it is what racism is all about. You may wish that gun owners fit your bias, but here in America we are free to be who we are and do not have to fit a mold.
