661  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Easy way to show current balance on the website using PHP? on: January 19, 2011, 11:54:44 PM
I would like to display my current account balance on my website (kind of like: So far X amount of BTC has been donated, where X obviously shows the balance of an address) using PHP, but I want to extract this from a Bitcoin wallet residing on a different machine than the web-server. Is it possible and if so, what's the easiest way to do this? Also, is it possible to show the overall state of my entire wallet using PHP, but again connecting to a remote machine (I know this is not a smart thing to do, but just curious)?

My problem is I have no way of installing Bitcoin application on my hosting account, so I need to extract this info from my own bitcoin application residing on my PC. Thanks in advance for any help with this.

This ROCKS.  Congratulations to whoever created this, fantastic job.

The potential is huge.

For example, I just created a "Junket" and sent the link down my Facebook newsfeed.

How else could this be extended?  Could a WordPress plugin be developed so that every post on a blog automatically creates a Junket with donation potential?  How about for vBulletin posts, SMF posts and every other forum/social content software product?

What about a Firefox and/or Chrome extension that could detect a YouTipIt URL in a video description on YouTube and let's you donate right on the spot?

This is gold Jerry, GOLD!

+1

Whoever created this website deserves a whole jar full of tips.

So, is selling goods at the price you get them taxable?
664  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ostracism of certain bitcoins. on: January 16, 2011, 03:16:41 PM
In principle it is possible to find out whether certain bitcoins have been used for immoral transactions, like buying of stolen goods, assassinations, etc. When such bitcoins are identified, will this result in the refusal to accept them later on? Even if they were already spend multiple times, people may refuse to accept them for services or goods.

It is pointless and to me it sounds like marking notes by the government or whoever. Just like cash, Bitcoins will be used for the good and the bad, and that's natural. If I pay an assassin to kill someone, that cash doesn't get "polluted" and at some stage it could even be donated to some charity.

Of course I don't condone scams or murders, but I don't think banning some bitcoins from circulation is a good idea.
665  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Seeking a hard drive on: January 16, 2011, 02:59:13 PM
Windows XP compatible required, empty preferred, previously used is fine.  one terabyte preferred, 500 gig acceptable.

100 bitcoins offered, willing to negotiate.  Will also pay for shipping, prefer continental US, if shipping is too high we may need to discuss, want secure shipping, do not need fast.

I have plenty of hard-drives - used and new, but I am in Europe - and I assume you are in the US? Do you want IDE or SATA?

You have to go directly to the manufacturer's website to install their linux drivers.
I'm pretty sure that Ubuntu askes me if I want to install the proprietary Nvidia driver right after my first boot. I didn't have to download anything manually from Nvidia. Now I'm getting about 50 Ghash/sec from my GeForce GTX460.

My apologies.  I guess I was thinking of the Cuda stuff.

And probably you also meant 50Mhash/s not Ghash/s. Smiley
667  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Report on: January 16, 2011, 11:44:45 AM
Here's a statistic I'd be interested in (I'm not sure why). What is the earliest block whose generated coins have been spent?

Good question - here's the answer  http://bitcoinreport.blogspot.com/2011/01/first-bitcoins-ever-spent.html
Your work deserves a donation.  Cool
668  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Taxes on: January 16, 2011, 04:49:32 AM
There is another aspect of it - regarding paying taxes Let's say, for the argument's sake, that I am willing to pay the taxes.

What if I sell goods at the price I got them (however, I buy them for Euro - and sell them for Bitcoins)? I will be able to produce receipts for the goods I bought - and show the "tax office clerk" the bitcoin rate at the time of sale, that would prove that I did not make any profit on that transaction (not even in Bitcoins). As a matter of fact this is the way I am going to do it - I don't want to make Bitconis on it - I just want to encourage people to start buying goods for them.

What do you guys think, would they have something on me then?
669  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Taxes on: January 16, 2011, 04:45:36 AM
(keeping in mind Bitcoin accounts are anynomous it would be damn hard to prove that you actually sold something, unless they arranged a fake sale and pretended being your customer)

That's indeed how they would proceed.   Just like with drugs.  They have policemen disguise themselves into drug addicts, and they try to record an actual drug sell.

I actually think that war against drug will be a good model for a future war against bitcoin.

Yes, that is very true. I sometimes even ask the question above as an analogy to advertising about selling marihuana. Is advertising that I am selling weed a crime - or does it only become one when such a transaction takes place?
670  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Report on: January 16, 2011, 04:02:16 AM
But this only shows the total amount of Bitcoins ever sent to a particular address?

It doesn't seem to be accurate, because I have a specific amount of bitcoins on one of my addresses and it is not on the list (and it should be).

Hmmm... how long have you had your balance?  This list was based on a snapshot of data that is approaching being 1 day old, so if your balance is recent it will have been missed.  Also at the time I take the snapshot I ignore the most recent 120 transactions.   Does your balance show correctly on blockexplorer.com?  If you don't mind letting me know your address via PM I'll take a look through my code and see why it got missed.

Oh, sorry. My balance changed today a few times so this wouldn't be included yet. It's okay - my address is there with an older balance. Sorry for that.
671  Economy / Marketplace / Re: bitcoin chess internet server on: January 16, 2011, 03:42:24 AM
Hi, this is an old thread, but anyway...

I'm too a poor player (about 1600 ELO) to play for money.

But I like the chess game and I think it might be interesting if good players (both humans and computers) could have a plateform to play for bitcoins.

Some pretty good games could emerge from a purly electronic bitcoin chess tournament.

It could also be a great intencive for programmers to developp a good chess programm.

I know there is already a famous game tournament plateform (ICS I think).  It should be easily modified to male players play for bitcoins.

This is a great idea, I love playing chess.

The problem with playing for Bitcoins (or any kind of money) is cheating. If you play with someone, you can be running a Chessmaster copy in the background and just make the moves that the computer does (by using your opponent's moves against your PC). This way your opponent would always lose, unless he is Kasparov - or unless you are playing blitz chess where there is no time to use the Chessmaster. Correct me if I am wrong.

I am going to open an on-line store with wooden toys shortly, accepting bitcoin only. I am going to do it as a natural person, without registering any company.

I would say the tax issue really depends on the country one lives in, for example in Ireland you can earn up to 4000 Euro without declaring it as income - so even if Bitcoins were taxable I will be okay for a while.

Barter is generally considered a taxable transaction.  the government is going to want their cut.

I have a question regarding this, actually: if barter was illegal somewhere, would running a shop itself be illegal - or would they have to prove to you that you actually exchanged something for bitcoins to get into you? For instance, if you advertise that you can sell stuff for bitcoin, can they do something to you for advertising itself - or do you have to catch you doing it? (keeping in mind Bitcoin accounts are anynomous it would be damn hard to prove that you actually sold something, unless they arranged a fake sale and pretended being your customer)

This is why we need a Bitcoin-for-Cash dealer on every corner of every village, every town, every city, in every country.   Email me to list yourself as a Bitcoin-for-Cash contact in your own town.... on http://bitcoinbuy.com     Every one of us should be a volunteer bitcoin-for-cash person wherever you live.....  Contact me to get listed.  My email is:  email@bitcoinme.com

The problem with that is some people have very little bitcoins.
678  Economy / Currency exchange / Buying 5000 BTC with Paypal on: January 13, 2011, 09:01:07 AM
I want to buy 5000 BTC with Paypal. I have good trading history with SmokeTooMuch (got a large amount of BTC from him with Paypal over the last few months). Also I topped up my account with Paypal on mtgox about 4 months ago while it was still accepting it so he can confirm that as well.

PM me with the price if you are interested.
679  Economy / Marketplace / Re: We accept Bitcoins on: January 12, 2011, 10:52:01 PM
Hello!

Can you add us to the list, we accept Bitcoin!

www.shamanscents.com

Scented and essential oils, jewelry, scarves and more!

Would be cool if you had some kind of an automated payment system for Bitcoin on site instead of just sending the Bitcoins manually.
680  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: 450btc Bounty (Pledge) for Open Source Exchange project. on: January 11, 2011, 11:12:48 PM
I sent 5678.00 BTC, so I consider my pledge already spent.

Perhaps I should have sent my pledge to you instead...
