Jan Vornberger, Instawallet's previous owner

The whois for the domain doesn't indicate a transfer, which presumably a new owner would want to occur.  The site does now show Paymium of France as the copyright, but that's about the closest to indicating which entity now owns the service.

6662  Economy / Gambling / Re: Bitcoin will be exchanged at a rate lower than $5/BTC at the end of April. on: April 30, 2012, 01:12:44 AM
Crazy, you can place a bet on this up until the last second before the event occurs  (midnight on the 30th Eastern time, which is 4am UTC).

So if you wait until right before the deadline you can essentially be guaranteed to win.

I stopped reading after:

Old money should never contaminate the new economy islands. Goods produced in the economy islands should in principle not be sold to the external FRBS world by any individual island citizen. Exports should be regulated and managed carefully by the island authority.

If the system needs to be protected (by force, presumably) from outside influence for survival, is that not a flaw?

6665  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why wallet.dat.rewrite ? on: April 29, 2012, 10:59:09 PM
Near wallet.dat I have wallet.dat.rewrite? If I delete this file I send bitcoins without fee, if I restore this file, fee is again.

Having a fee required has nothing to do with whether or not that file exists.  When a spend transaction occurs, the code looks at your wallet and based on the makeup of the coins it will determine if a fee will be required.  So that is why one transaction might not require any fee, and the next transaction, nearly identical and just a few seconds later might differ and a fee is required.

As far as wallet.dat.rewrite, that can be purged.  If you are worried about security, you can spend your entire balance to a new address (that is now protected with encryption)  so that the old addresses (prior to when you started encryption) have no balance.   And, of course, no longer use those old addresses for any incoming payments.

I did the calculation 1/3.  Annual inflation rate will drop to 13%.

Right now it is at 29.5% annual (dropped below 30% threshold earlier this month).  Hadn't looked at it recently.
6667  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: The Google Translate Web Element on: April 29, 2012, 09:31:39 PM
Wow, that will be useful.

Bitcoin is a universal currency.  Well, stated more correctly, it is a protocol that doesn't have any concept of nationality or language even (except for some message syntax).

So it is already being used around the globe:

But there is so much further to go:

So this translate tool can help broaden and extend bitcoin's reach.

And we are seeing proof that Bitcoin is reaching further and further.  For instance, recently launched were exchanges in Sweden and the Philippines. BitInstant is nearing the launch of their product for serving the UK, Brazil, Russia and more.

Being able to serve many languages from a single source is an innovation that will help bitcoin reach where "bitcoin" is a word they might never even have heard of yet.
6668  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mobile money slowly turning East Africa into cashless society on: April 29, 2012, 10:33:47 AM
Fairly short article in the Economist (well, short for the Economist):

Quote
One business where the poorest continent is miles ahead

There were 20 countries in which more than 10% of adults say they used mobile money at some point in 2011.

Of those, 15 are African.

In Kenya, Sudan and Gabon half or more of adults used mobile money.

Most mobile-phone transactions are tiny. Market traders, for example, use mobile phones to pay peasant farmers for a single bag of cassava or maize-meal. One of the most successful mobile-phone products in Kenya is a SIM card costing just a few cents—but that is all people need for the occasional transaction.

Mobile phones are also used to bank remittances from family members abroad.  This may explain why mobile money has done so well in Somalia, a country which barely has a government, but where a third of adults said they used mobile money last year. Somalia is one of the countries that most depends on remittances: one study found that 80% of the capital for start-up firms came from the diaspora

And an even better question, why did it not die like all the pundits predicted?

And maybe the best question...

"How to Make bitcoin be worth more?" <--  Why?  What does that do for bitcoin?  Do you expect more people to start using if it trades at $20 instead of $5?

I'm not sure we want to retain wager records forever, for a number of reasons.

6673  Economy / Services / Re: BTCBuy now offering calling cards on: April 28, 2012, 07:17:47 PM
Again, out of many thousands of orders that we fulfilled, there has not been a single case of fraud based on email interception.

As far as why you hadn't seen it much yet is probably because the type of cards you've been selling up to now couldn't be used anonymously.  To use a card for spending one had to have a delivery address for the order paid for using the merchant gift card, for instance.  Prepaid wireless and calling cards work a little more anonymously (though even a $20 throwaway phone is tracked by cell tower, E-911 and gps even info even so it stops being truly anonymous once law enforcement was to get involved.)
6674  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can you pay your household bills with bitcoin ? on: April 28, 2012, 06:55:14 PM
Are there any services - existing or being worked on - that ?:

1) Take regular bitcoin payments
2) Convert to fiat - say buying directly on an exchange at the spot rate.
3) Pay domestic bills in a 'direct debit' fashion.
4) Perhaps with an API so that the user can pull their most recent bills into a suitable client.

It is starting to happen with intermediaries that will accept bitcoins and then will pay your bill for you using fiat.  I believe that is what SpendBitcoins is doing with BPAY in Australia.(you provide Biller Code and Customer Reference Number at checkout).

It might be quite some time before we see actual utilities start to accept bitcoin for payment.  This is partly the result of regulation and bureaucracy -- some don't even accept a payment card for bill payment yet, for example.

There was a service operating for a short while, BitcoinAgents.com that I had high hopes for.   It was intended as a buying agent service but it has a use case that is in demand.  The service was a directory of people in specific geographic area who offer to do work for a fee (paid in Bitcoins, of course).  These workers are matched with people willing to pay for tasks to be performed -- such as buying an item online as a domestic purchase and then shipping it out internationally.   I saw another use for this type of service in being able to send bitcoins and have that person make a utility payment for you (which is often something possible when using cash at many convenient locations).

Of course, that is an expensive method and doesn't scale but it would give more options for ways that bitcoins can be used.

And there's now in the U.S. mobile wireless prepaid phone ecodes available for purchase from BTCBuy.info:

 - AT&T GoPhone
 - Cricket PAYgo
 - Page Plus Cellular
 - Simple Mobile
 - T-Mobile
 - Virgin Mobile

I am in Europe - SEPA payment area

Don't hesitate to inquire:

By the way, important note here: we have access to a wide variety of calling cards and wireless refills, both in USA and internationally. If you are interested in purchasing PINs or direct refills for some specific carrier, please send me a message, I could get those handled on priority basis

What will probably happen is BPAY or maybe BTCBuy will end up getting interviewed for a story in a business rag and the magic words:
 - "no chargebacks",
 - "zero fees" (to the payment recipient)
 and
 - "same-day settlement"
will be used.

And then all of a sudden the gears will start churning with the readers ... like "hey, we could really use that!"

And then when there is competition, one merchant will start giving a discount for Bitcoin payments versus payment cards, and once that happens it is all over... victory will be Bitcoin's!
6675  Economy / Gambling / Re: SatoshiDICE.com - Verified rolls, up to 65,000x winning on: April 28, 2012, 06:23:17 PM
From the Recent Bets looks like 44 transactions got processed all at once (when it restarted) so you should see your payouts now.

I also notice that using a client where the wallet that hasn't caught up to the latest block won't show some payout transactions when the inputs for them cannot be verified yet due to the blockchain download not being current enough.

unable to connect atm, anyone else ?

The failure to connect during  "connecting to port 8080"?

If so, that used to happen for me in an older version of Chrome.  From Firefox though it worked fine, from the same machine.  Works fine in a current release of Chrome though, so not sure if Chrome fixed it or the Flash app fixed it.

for some reason, i can't access the data myself. do i need an account at their site?

The BPP site?

They use Flash and they changed their URL structure since the OP and I can't get a URL to work for any country other than USA, and using the Flash app never gets past "collecting data".

My guess is that it is not being kept up-to-date except for the U.S.
6679  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The image of bitcoins on: April 28, 2012, 04:08:15 PM
There is an article on the Bitcoin wiki that might provide some help when trying to describe Bitcoin:

Amir of Bitcoin Consultancy wrote up a great resource:

Online media gloms onto any sensational news development, whether it be a positive or negative development.  That's what they get paid to do!  People who aren't deep into the technology field then will llikely learn of Bitcoin first from the media.  So as a result many will have preconceived notions about bitcoin based on what they've learned from the media.  This past week they learned about the reddit forum where stripping for bitcoins occurs and the stories put out by the media were not favorable to bitcoin, of course.

And of course, there was the obligatory story about SR of the ZOMG! type that seem to appear about at least once a week somewhere in the world.

But the media isn't going to make or break bitcoin ... so for now, whatever happens happens and is water under the bridge.

Because bitcoin is not an organization, has no marketing department and no team of people working on how to best communicate what Bitcoin is to the world, the message each individual receives will likely vary based on which source is spreading the message to them.

When reading a blog post about bitcoin, the reader might feel the author has a libertarian slant and is trying to push an agenda.  That's probably not something untrue.

When a visitor to a bitcoin-based website sees an amateurish web and graphic design of the site and concludes that it looks like it was done by a programmer who is unskilled at web and graphic design, that's probably not something that is untrue.

When a new  visitor to this forum asks how to buy bitcoins with PayPal and gets lambasted for even mentioning that evil, six-letter word, that visitor might feel the experience was unprofessional.  That's probably not something that is untrue.

Because bitcoin is not an organization, I don't know what will cause any of this to change (just yet).  Some of these things are getting proper attention on their own so at least we are heading towards improvement.  The UI in the bitcoin-qt client is an improvement over what the -wx client had.  The websites of the exchanges are improvements in both form and function over their earlier incarnations.

We know what works though.  Look at Bitcoin mining, for instance.  That too has no organization, no marketing budget and no team of people guiding it with any authority (other than merit).  But it has become an impressive industry and ecosystem in its own right.  It has done so because there is an economic incentive to do things right.  There's about $1 million a month going to miners and they've built up to that level or more (actually, way more).

Look at the level of interest in the mining forum (evidenced in 160297 posts) versus the handfuls of threads spread elsewhere in which the topic is how to do ecommerce with Bitcoin.  Merchants don't see adding bitcoin ecommerce as something that will bring immediate economic gain so it will be an uphill battle to try to organically attract interest to that function.

Use of bitcoin as a currency used widely in commerce is something that must materialize or Bitcoin may not ever reach the lofty goals its speculators currently see as it having the potential to reach.

When short-term speculators give way to longer term investors with tens of millions of dollars of funds on the line, a few million spent towards projecting a proper image for bitcoin may not be a bad use of additional funds.

But why start too soon?  Coins are being flipped at $5 today and in about 200 days the daily issuance of new bitcoins will drop in half, so building a concerted effort now to project a positive message is likely viewed as something premature.

Their thinking might be that restraint now will only make the eventual ascent to come be something even that much greater to savor.

Also, not sure if it matters but I've been a member for over a year and have done some trades in the past without issue. Can check my post history.c

You might want to get set up on the #bitcoin-otc Web of Trust (WoT) so that in the future you'll have a trust history there.

There are traders there who will accept PayPal as payment, but usually not unless there is a good trust history in the WoT.
