6781  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Any way to use an Antminer or other miner to rebuild Bitcoin-QT blockchain? on: October 16, 2016, 02:37:21 PM
My first foray into Bitcoin mining beyond CPU was an FPGA.  The  zTex was already outpaced by graphics cards and was overpriced but I ran it for a year.  Wonder if an FPGA could be programmed to aid Bitcoin-QT reindexing.

Sounds like you were an early adopter.  Cool.  I mined with GPUs for a bit, couldn't buy an FPGA for trying and then got screwed over by BFL.
Anyway, I think the re-indexing is a single thread process.  I've read into trying to speed it up before without a great deal of success.  Increasing dbcache size in the conf file helped and using an SSD also helped but it still feels slow.  I'm not sure a multi-FPGA configuration would help with that.

Start by reading the board rules.  Then make your posts in a more suitable area.  Afterwards, you can work on your trust rating.
6783  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Any way to use an Antminer or other miner to rebuild Bitcoin-QT blockchain? on: October 16, 2016, 12:28:03 AM
I only keep a single blockchain current now and no real reason except in case it might be needed.  It broke recently.  I'm slowly rebuilding.  I have 6 or 8 antiminers here of various flavors that I keep just in case mining ever becomes profitable again at my electric cost.  It really would be great if there were some way I could speed up the Bitcoin-QT chain reindex with a miner somehow.

Do we know If we are able mining through the wallet with XEON Phi co-processor

You can mine with any CPU but it's not worth it now because of GPU mining.

The XEON Phi is 72 core processor but they would not show up beside your CPU for the Pascalcoin wallet.  While it would be amazing to see how fast it could hash blocks, I don't think it is compatible with the software.

You should move this to meta.

Also it would be nice to know the wallet which was infected.
Not a link; just the name.

It was the Vermo wallet.  I couldn't get it to compile in a linux virtualbox so I scanned the windows wallet with virustotal.  It came back clean so like an idiot I ran it on my machine without using virtual box because I didn't have a windows instance already setup and I was lazy.  It was a stupid mistake that hopefully others won't make.  You can search in the altcoin announcement thread and see that the Vermo wallet was indeed a virus and that others were affected as well.

Fortunately I enable 2fa on all my accounts if it is available. Unfortunately BTC does not have 2fa capabilities.

Etymology
From Latin vermis. Compare Italian verme, Sicilian vemmu.
Noun
vermo m (plural vermi)
1.worm

I know hindsight is 20/20 but... wow.

Thanks for sharing your story.  Hopefully if will serve as a warning to others.
Everyone involved should give this VERMO user negative trust.

6788  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: What is the Change adress in electrum on: October 15, 2016, 11:36:17 AM
Hello

In the adresses panel i have 2 possibilities
1 - Receiving
2 - Change

I use up to now the adress in Receiving .... but what is the use of the adress in "Change" ?

Thanks again for your help

C.

You wont necessarily have the correct amount of coin you require in a given address.  The wallet will take the inputs required to approximate the value you want to transfer and the move the extra amount to a change address within your wallet.  It's not so different from fiat currency in that respect although the denominations are much more numerous.  If you had a $10 bill and wanted to buy a $5 item... you would want change right?  Same idea.
6789  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Best Blockchain to use as Template? on: October 15, 2016, 10:10:25 AM
I would like to write my own cryptocoin, but instead of attempting to write it totally from scratch (should I?) I was thinking it might be easier to modify a pre-existing blockchain. If so, which is the simplest or perhaps the easiest to digest, and modify into a custom coin? Thanks.

Firstly you should understand that software begets the blockchain.  Secondly, you need to understand that you can't modify a pre-existing blockchain; by definition, the blockchain is a growing list of records (blocks) that are secured by a link to the previous block to prevent tampering.  It is improbable that you will find a modifiable pre-existing blockchain - though I have no idea how much hashing power you have at your disposal.
6790  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-10-15] Business centre 'held to ransom' for bitcoins on: October 15, 2016, 09:14:33 AM
An excellent example of

Poor reporting
Scaremongering
Ignorance

Quote
Locked screens displayed a sinister message demanding three 'bitcoins' in return for the safety of some files.
But the centre's CEO, Maragret McMahon, said they had a "lucky escape".
"We refused to pay the money, which we have been told would equal about £13,000 and reported the hack to the police," Ms McMahon said.

I prefer to think of it as foreshadowing and very soon, three 'bitcoins' will fetch about £13,0001

6791  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: Phone screen broke, how to get to mycelium wallet? on: October 15, 2016, 02:42:42 AM
Hi,

So my phones screen broke. I am not planning to get it fixed. How do I recover my wallet on my new phone?

Mycelium for android.

Thanks

If you didn't import any single private keys, then all of your wallet can be recovered with the master-seed.  Simply install mycelium on your new phone and type in the word list that you copied when you installed it the first time on your broken phone.  If you didn't write it down, you'd better fix the phone you aren't planning to get fixed... unless it costs more than the value of the coins stored on it.

This Company Uses Bitcoin Blockchain For Medical Marijuana DNA Sequencing

A molecular information company called Medicinal Genomics (MCG) has partnered with 12 cannabis processors and cultivators to develop genomics-based safety and quality standards, and they are using the bitcoin blockchain to track DNA sequencing cannabis strains.

https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/company-uses-bitcoin-blockchain-for-medical-marijuana-dna-sequencing/

I would like to know how a "proprietary blockchain interface" can be called "the bitcoin blockchain".  The only thing they're leveraging "the bitcoin blockchain" for is publicity and funding... it's the latest tech, right?
This article isn't even newsworthy.

edit: Also, I don't believe this is a notable Bitcoin press hit.
6793  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin Price Increases 30% In Venezuela Due to Currency Devaluation on: October 12, 2016, 07:56:49 PM
Annualized inflation can't be 1.108% or there would be no issue.

In Canada, annualized inflation is 1.35%
In USA, annualized inflation is 1.10%

Is the inflation rate in Venezuela one thousand one hundred and eight percent?  That would make more sense if they are calling it a crisis.

It's no surprise; all they really ever had was oil and look what happened to oil.  Couple that with a prolonged drought and no government of any political stripe could look good in that environment.  Citizens should certainly look into buying Bitcoin, or gold, or any other currency... hell even stocking up on food if there is any.

Sometimes I think and read about the history, from the book by this and that, I seek the truth about the lives of the people of Atlantis and Lemuria race, it was the opinion of many, but I still have not found all the facts nation Huh?

In this forum, we share knowledge may you all have read about the history of the nation??

Sounds like we need a fantasy/fiction/unsolved mysteries section.  Certainly there is nothing political or societal about your post.  You should move it to off-topic.

This is a better place to go.

Well, I just want one to make tests and possibly buy some coins. But what's the point in having 99 useless more?

Not sure why you put a space in the public key, but I sent you an empty account you should get it in a bit.

He didn't put a space, the forum does that when formatting the posts.

Edit:  I couldn't send you one as I'm not at home.

Code:
if ($DateRegistered == $LastActive)
   $LastActive = 'Never';

but this does not explain why in other account show, although also registration and last active date same.

example:

Are there any interval of time , if during which did not exceed, to show "never"
This time, user might have logged out after registration ans then logged in again to make the post.

I would even go so far as to say "must have" logged out.
6798  Other / Meta / Re: "Last active" bug? on: October 11, 2016, 04:36:55 PM
Dude registered on the 3rd, made a couple posts and never logged in again.
Last active was date registered.  I wouldn't call it a glitch.

6799  Other / Meta / Re: database leaked? on: October 11, 2016, 02:10:45 PM
yes i come back and "complain" - sorry 'bout that?
I change my adress as i get spam (so i did already) but other people cannot just change (in terms of "dispose") their email adresses (or they would have to change it on some dozen other boards)

I keep an eye on every spam mail so i can say that last week it's the first day my email adress used on that baord got spammed.

As mentioned in the other topic, i think it would be fair to send another roundmail so people know there is spam and it may be bitcoin/phishing related. Smart spammers know how to target their target audience so people should be aware bitcoin-fishing mails may come.

however, since this topic is known it could be merged or just closed.

I'm sure we all appreciated the "heads up" but you're a day late and a buck short which made me laugh and I just had to poke fun.
You can lock the thread yourself if you think that's the thing to do.  Bottom left of the screen (I think).

Some people mentioned high CPU usage in the wallet (which was basically busywaiting on GPU results), so here's a new version that doesn't chew up CPU: http://www.filedropper.com/pascalcudav3

Is this the unneutered version of your software or have you not released it yet?

He released the unmetred one last night to support the network. Vorsholk is solid and a great person.

Actually totally spaced this, here's an unneutered version with the memory leak fix: http://www.filedropper.com/pascalcudav4

10/54 positif ,not sure if i must download this ...

It is a false positive.  Malwarebytes Antimalware says it's fine.  Avast captured the file and uploaded it for further analysis but I created an exception anyway.  Later I got a pop up message from Avast thanking me for the upload and saying all was fine.

edit: of course, I could be wrong Wink

edit2: check here - Avast says it's good and they had the file for further inspection.
