One thing to keep in mind about most surge protectors - every time they protect vs a surge, it degrades them. Eventually they degrade to the point they are providing ZERO protection.

Definitely applies to any surge protector using a MOV (or combo types with a MOV as the last stage, though those type last longer as the other circuitry soaks some of each surge leaving less applied to the MOV to degrade it).

I remember there being at least one type that does NOT use a MOV and does NOT degrade, but I also remember that type being VERY EXPEN$$$$$IVE.

I was VERY underwhelmed by zoomhash when one of the power supply "bricks" they were selling for the Gridseed Blades died after 2-3 months - and the warenttee turned out to be ONE BLOODY MONTH.

 Flipping joke.

Bloody thing never saw more than about 40% of it's RATED load in that time, just to add insult to injury I've got a couple of 7A bricks (the ZH ones were 10A rated) that have NOT died after a year or so of usage.

Not blaming Zoomhash so much for their 10A brick dying, as for the CRAP warrenttee and NO STATEMENT OF WHAT THE JOKE OF A WARRENTTEE WAS on their website.

Double pepperoni and mushroom Papa John's thin crust (or Godfathers in a pinch).

Sadly, my favorite pizza no longer exists - Etna's in San Diego got taken out by a freeway expansion and never reopened. 8-(
6844  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S5 - Cooling system power calculation on: July 28, 2015, 11:48:25 PM
If you're using mechanical air conditioning, assuming a SEER / CEER of 10, you end up burning about 30% of the power your miners are using at the wall to keep the room temperature the same as if they weren't running at all.

Most current A/C units I've seen the last couple years are AT LEAST 10 SEER, many closer to 12 - which would work out to needing more like 25%.

It's not a matter of the flow through the miners, it's a matter of removing the heat, if you're going for a 'datacenter' model.

The Fan in the S5 is a Delta PWM model, given the RPM on it I'm CERTAIN that it's their ~200 cfm unit. The "flow director" fin design IIRC is PATENTED by Delta, and I've never seen a non-Delta fan use it.

"Nasty" loud is a matter for debate, they're NOT quiet but they're not much louder than a commmon room air fan at the same distance. They ARE higher pitched though, which might make them SEEM louder, but nowhere near as bad as the famed Delta 80mm 80CFM "screamers" or even the "one step down" 68CFM models I used to use on my Athlon XP machines (Alpha heatsinks, not the more-common but similar Swiftechs).

Anyone that tries to claim that PayPal is "safe" is either deluded or a scammer.
6846  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: 1155GH(+OverClock Potential), In Stock $0.319/GH & 0.51W/GH on: July 27, 2015, 11:27:53 AM
Used miner purchases will receive coupons towards new miner purchases

Although this current batch of Antminer S5 listed for sale are used units, Bitmain performs quality control testing on every machine to ensure that it is in proper working order before shipping to consumers.

These machines have only been running for about 40 days in our farm, so there should not be a significant impact on the performance or the total life of the machines.

Bitmain would like to offer coupons to customers who bought S4+ or S5 recently to be used towards the future purchase of our next generation of mining machine.

At this time, we are unable to provide detailed information on the new machines or the size of the coupons, but please expect an official announcement in the near future.

How about those of us that had an order pending and suddenly just as we got the payment together *poof* no more "new" S5s exist?

I would have had the money together a month or so sooner if y'all hadn't kept jacking the price up, or if your DHGate store didn't keep refusing my VALID credit card for no apparent reason (same card worked the same day with NewEgg and on several Amazon purchases, issue was NOT on my end, ended up having to get some Bitcoin to try to complete the order that way but dang CoinBase is SLOW sometimes.....).

6847  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Where did the additional 70PH come from? on: July 26, 2015, 07:28:44 AM
Does anyone know where the new hashrate came from?

It is difficult to even guess the exact amount but network hashrate went from 375PH to 445 PH in past 2-3 days, a 20% increase.

Un no, it did NOT go up anywhere near that high except perhaps on a normal "varies some in the VERY short term" peak.

 You're worrying or wondering about a non-event.

6848  Other / Off-topic / Re: Anyone here like Rap music? on: July 26, 2015, 07:25:27 AM
Rap is not music, by definition. It has no tune.

It MIGHT count as chanting, in some cases.

Way too many rap "artists" are ripoffs (this is not unique to rap, but was very common for a while).
 M. C. Hammer "Can't Touch This" ripping off Rick James "Superfreak" was probably the best known and extreme example, but nowhere near unique.
"Sampling" without paying royalties or giving credit is a ripoff.

It IS possible for a rap group to show class - reference how RunDMC not only credited Aerosmith when they covered "Walk This Way", they also had Perry and Tyler in the performance with them AND in the music video. VERY classy act that.

Rap CAN be successfully mixed with music. Faith No More, "Epic" among others.

The original rapper was Dr. Seuss. "Green Eggs and Ham" as covered by Moxy Fruvous is VERY interesting. (No, that's not a joke. Look it up.)

I am, however, firmly in the camp as a general rule that "The C in rap is silent". Think about it for a minute. Just SAY it, don't spell it.

6849  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Quick question please answer, if any one knows on: July 25, 2015, 01:09:22 PM

Is its better than S5 likes these? Because I have a 200$ Budget to Spend on Minor, I need a Minor which is able to Mine more than .3 BTC a month, If we remove the factor of Electricity cost.

Secondly how much noise they create? Is its too loud? can we make a Box and fix it in it to lower the noise?

To achieve .3 BTC a month (.01 BTC a day) you need appx. 1 TH of mining.

I'm pretty sure you are NOT going to achieve that on a budget of $200 - even with zero power cost.

Power supply ALONE for 1TH of mining with the MOST efficient miners out there right now (S5 or Spondoolies SP20) is going to set you back almost $100 - MORE for the older miners as they were LESS efficient per hash than the S5 or SP20 are.

You're aiming for a target that doesn't exist at this time, I'd recommend either doubling your budget or setting your BTC/month(day) target to something reasonable for your budget.

S5 been out of stock all day. Wonder if they finally REALLY ran out this time?
6851  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: S2 still profiatble after BTC halving? on: July 24, 2015, 05:49:13 PM
https://bitcoinwisdom.com

Since turn of the year, average of difficulty increases has been appx. 1.6%

Yes, at 5 cents/KWH I estimate that the S5 will be profitable as of the next halfing - BARELY - if diff increases continue to average out at 1.6% and price of bitcoin stays flat - but after a very few months it'll be breakeven then a loss under those estimate conditions.

We'll also have the "next generation" by then, probably from at least 4 companies, hashing away in major farms even if not available to mere "home" miners, to help keep pushing difficulty up.

6852  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: S2 still profiatble after BTC halving? on: July 24, 2015, 01:03:42 PM
If you have insanely cheap electric, perhaps.

Most likely, no.

Even the S5 projects to get very marginal by that point, if difficulty rate of increases stays about the same and the price of bitcoin stays flat, even with CHEAP electricity.
6853  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] 8xSpondoolies SP20 w/psu, 5.5x Antminer S5 w/psu, 1x Antminer S4+, IBM2880 on: July 23, 2015, 03:45:28 PM
I'm curious why you're listing the prices in $ when you're selling them for BTC?
6854  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Hot cables on S3, what am I doing wrong? on: July 22, 2015, 07:49:05 PM
Possible the "other" connector on the board with the fried connector got loose.
6855  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: US Regulators cracking down on altcoins on: July 22, 2015, 07:48:00 PM
Regulators have been looking at bitcoin closely at least since the Silk Road mess. Some (New York) seem to have gone WAY overboard on excessively tight regulation, some (IRS) seem to have a more reasonable approach.
6856  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Most undervalued coin? on: July 21, 2015, 11:55:43 AM
For the long term, given the almost total lack of MERCHANT support for ANY of them, I would have to say that ALL alt-coins are overvalued.

Litecoin, Dogecoin, and Dash appear to be the ONLY exceptions at this point, but even all of those combined don't have 10% of the market penetration OR merchant support of Bitcoin.

Therefore, my answer is that Bitcoin is hands down the ONLY cryptocoin that might be undervalued.
6857  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: US Regulators cracking down on altcoins on: July 21, 2015, 11:38:22 AM
5 person staff at DoJ is not exactly a major investigation - and it's a LONG WAYS from "cracking down".

Even for a lame FUD attempt this is pretty weak - assuming the alleged facts are true.
6858  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: IBM's 7 nm chips on: July 20, 2015, 11:31:06 PM
"...a 7nm node test chips with working transistors..."

AKA VERY early prototype, don't expect to see real world parts using this for 4-6 years ballpark.

Folks are still working the bugs out of the process yields on 14nm and 16nm, with 10nm on the horizon for a year or two from now.

6859  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Quick question please answer, if any one knows on: July 20, 2015, 11:27:48 PM
Haven't seen a S5 under $420ish WITH shipping for almost a month now, since BitMain started jacking up the price on new ones in responce to the BTC price runup

For that matter, they're getting thin PERIOD on eBay, and haven't seen ANY on Amazon since I bought out all the cheap ones early this month (except some new ones at even more than BitMain prices).

6860  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: If mining BTC isn't profitable like people say -- how are OTHER people doing it? on: July 20, 2015, 11:22:14 PM
At this point, ROI is mostly about what your electric costs are. Forget it at 15 cents/KWh, very iffy at 10, fairly easy at 5.

Cost of the miner vs. performance is also a factor, as is the probability of the miner LIVING long enough to ROI (Titans are very efficient, but their reliability is NOT GOOD. See also Gridseed blades and their poorly designed VERY marginal power conversion design.).

Even at 15c/KWh, a SP20E or a S5 are technically PROFITABLE. You're just not going to profit ENOUGH to pay back the cost of buying the unit AND needfull power supply/supplies, unless the price of Bitcoin goes up faster than the difficulty does for YEARS.

When you factor in the cost and how long a typical windmill/solar panel lasts, AND needed auxillary equipment, AND needed battery capasity, solar and wind are NOT competative with average power costs from the utility company in most of the 1'st and 2'nd world countries. 3'd world or some remote areas, they become practical because (1) there IS no reliable power and/or (2) power is WAY expensive and/or (3) the cost of installing the power LINES is way more expensive than the cost of the panels/windmill.

You also have to be carefull and do your research into the companies - just because a company is large doesn't mean it made GOOD RELIABLE equipment (can anyone else out there say Clipper Windpower, for one of the better known failures (technically in process, they still exist sorta) in the Wind Power field).
