Remote buying, buy things for people and send them to where they are
A splendid idea. I, for one, bought a Lemote laptop and shipping from China to Russia costed me 1/3 of the whole price (although it wasn't just shipping, insurance was included). Then, there are quite interesting things on e-bay with US-only shipping, and this is quite a market. I would like to see such a service operating.

Good luck with that.

It would be nice if someone ported this to facebook and the likes.
706  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Newbie Questions re Generating Speed on: January 08, 2011, 02:24:49 PM

I appreciate that gpus are a faster option, but how would someone - who's never dabbled in that side of computing - exploit the gpus in our own system? I have two graphics cards in my system, an NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT and an ATI Radeon HD 4300 (which is primarily there to speak to my TV so it's available most of the time). Are either suitable?  (or do you have to dedicate a machine explicitly to the task)

In order to mine with GPU your card must be compatible with either OpenCL (ATI) or CUDA (NVidia). You can check that here:

NVidia CUDA: http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_gpus.html
Ati OpenCL: http://developer.amd.com/gpu/ATIStreamSDK/pages/DriverCompatibility.aspx

Once you verify that it is compatible, just do a search on the forum for GPU miner and you will find a few of them along with the instructions on how to install and use them. I personally use m0mchil's miner: http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1334

And, in any case, is 4400 the kind of rate we'd expect from a modern CPU? It's an I7 quad core 2.8Ghz. Initially I allowed it to use 2 cores only, but the rate was only 2300, so I permitted the other 2 to join in. If it's relevant, I'm running Win 7 Ult and have 12Gb Ram installed.

Yes, it is. CPU mining doesn't make sense anymore, IMHO.
707  Other / Off-topic / Recommend a Linux distro for home use? on: January 08, 2011, 01:28:17 PM
I am going to switch from Windows to Linux on my home PC. At the workplace I administer a server where I put SUSE about 4 years ago and never changed to anything else (apart from upgrading and installing patches of course). Not that I am not happy with SUSE, but can you guys recommend any other distributions that would be ideal for home use (easy installation of audio/video codecs and stuff and of course, easy installation of Bitcoin and GPU miners).

Thanks in advance.

If the had classic PC games on the offer I would have spent all my bitcoins there!

It is awesome, regardless.

Any chance you could state your real name before we ruin it? Smiley
712  Other / Off-topic / Re: I am changing my name... Advice would be appreciated... on: January 06, 2011, 10:33:12 PM

Let the free market decide!  I pledge 100 BTC for you to change your name to Megatron.

ROTFL I was just going to write exactly the same! However, I was going to pledge 50BTC Smiley

I pledge 101BTC if you change your name to Cobra Commander Smiley
713  Other / Off-topic / Re: Decriminalize consume of cannabis in Germany - An official petition on: January 06, 2011, 09:38:42 PM
I fully support legalization of cannabis everywhere in the world, spent a good bit of time fighting for it in Poland with a few friends of mine. Unfortunately - in vain.

One question, though: why would Bundestag accept signatures from people from outside of Germany?

I am going to post this on my facebook profile, you may expect ~200 Polish people will sign it soon. Smiley
714  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Official Bitcoin Unicode Character? on: January 05, 2011, 10:18:48 PM
just an idea that I'd like to share:

We could create a pitch for creative agencies to create this symbol.

The benefit for an agency would be that they could be the first and one and only creator of this symbol for this groundbreaking digital invention. Having worked with many agencies in the past years  I sense that some of them may be very excited because it would create buzz for them.
they would likely issue a press release.

The benefit for bitcoin would be that we would profit from this buzz and dont need to pay anything (while we can still donate them some coins)
as a client, we could still chose whichever symbol we want from the agencys proposals.

That's a great idea, but how would you incorporate that symbol into Unicode?

Witam,

Informuję, że przed świętami rozpocząłem tłumaczenie klienta Bitcoin i kiedy tylko będzie ono kompletne (niebawem), to wyślę je autorowi programu. Z chęciom wysłucham wszystkich uwag Wink

Jak tam idzie tłumaczenie?
716  Other / Archival / Re: I will buy Bitcoins via Paypal ($10.00 USD for Current Mt. Gox BTC Rate) on: January 05, 2011, 12:22:26 AM
So I guess it's a matter of trust, then. Basically, the only way I can do PayPal transactions with (most) people on here is if I have a good rep, am I correct?

It seems so. Unless you have someone who is trusted around here and could vouch for you?
717  Economy / Economics / Re: Hostile action against the bitcoin infrastructure on: January 02, 2011, 12:06:22 AM
Just to contribute a potential attack methodology...

Wallet eating viruses.

Then people using bitcoin will simply switch to Linux, or have a separate Linux partition just for bitcoin.
If you use Linux only with software from signed repositories, it is virtually impossible to catch a virus.

I actually think what Innomen is saying makes a lot of sense. Switching to Linux will not be possible for people who can barely operate Windows. It is not us, the technical people that need to worry about this, but since we try to convince more and more people to start using Bitcoin (for example I got a few of my friends into using Bitcoin, but most of them have no idea how it all works and I doubt they encrypt their wallet with TrueCrypt after every transaction and copy it to five different places), they will be the ones affected by the viruses. Once virus' authors realize there is money in it, they will save no effort to get to one's wallet.

Another VERY important aspect of this is that people need to be aware of the fact that after they copy their wallet into a safe place they should start using a new one. Why? Because most people make backup copies after a new transaction (I personally do that after a big transaction). Now, if an attacker or a virus manages to transfer coins from your account - your backup copy is useless. It's actually better if the virus corrupts your wallet instead of using it (if you have a backup). And, since the wallet is not encrypted, I suppose this is not impossible? Please correct me if I am wrong.

ok, tnx for the reply's.

I'm always a little bit suspicious when it comes to handing over a copy of my id.
But everything went fine.  Smiley

Saying that, I provided a scanned copy of my passport and driving licence to http://exchangezone.com about two months ago and never got any reply.
