I don't like this opening so far. I always go for the Grunfeld defense when I play black.
Right now, as things stand, I would play d6 to defend e5, but I have never played this position before.
You can't really go into the Grunfield when they go for an e4 opening.
I did a little research: the opening starting with 1. e4 Nf6 is called Alekhine's Defence
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alekhine's_Defence
and the one starting with 1. e4 Nc6 is called Nimzowitsch Defence
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimzowitsch_Defence

The Grünfeld Defence is characterised by the moves: 1. d4 Nf6  2. c4 g6  3. Nc3 d5

For any beginners wondering, b5 prevents the threat of Bxc6 and Nxe5. For example:

6.Re1  O-O
7.Bxc6 dxc6
8.Nxe5

The same idea did not work last move because of e4 being unprotected:

6.Bxc6 dxc6
7.Nxe5 Nxe4 regaining the pawn.

Thanks for your explanations. It's clear now. I suppose we can also play 6...d6 to prevent this threat?

I see we are trying to avoid this. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer?node=2042607&move=7.5&moves=e4.e5.Nf3.Nc6.Bb5.a6.Ba4.Nf6.O-O.Nxe4.d4.b5.d5&nodes=34844.34845.2042607

Thx for the explanation. I can't think that many moves ahead. I thought we would be able to trap that bishop but it is a trap for us. Cheesy

I'm too far behind you guys to be useful. Gonna just watch from now on. Wish I could see this far ahead without using assistance. Smiley

BTW, linking to this site the move makes it far easier for the layman to understand. Learning the lingo and visualizing it is not easily absorbed. Especially through reading. My reading comprehension skills have become practically non existent in the last decade. Cheesy

Based on some of the votes I saw in the last game, you are not less advanced than everyone. Keep actively participating and asking questions. That is how you improve!
I agree. Since you're interested in chess, you shouldn't exclude yourself (whatever your level). I'm a beginner and I'm not ashamed to participate Smiley
Moreover, good players can explain and argue their choice and convince the others.

If I understand well, we have basically the choice between:
  • playing with caution: Closed Defence (5...Be7)
  • or being more agressive: Open Defence (5...Nxe4)

Apparently, the problem with the Open Defence is the Karpov's move, 9.Nbd2, which limits Black's options.
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer?node=37411&move=9.5&moves=e4.e5.Nf3.Nc6.Bb5.a6.Ba4.Nf6.O-O.Nxe4.d4.b5.Bb3.d5.dxe5.Be6.Nbd2&nodes=21720.21721.21722.21723.21724.21725.21726.34841.34842.34843.34844.34845.34846.34847.34848.34849.37411

(Correct me if I'm wrong)

Thus, I vote for 5...Be7.

Be7: 3 votes (galdur, boolberry, hermesesus)
Nxe4: 2 votes (Morecoin Freeman, Hueristic)

I would tend to agree the that the open defense is more aggressive but there are many exceptions. There are some very boring and drawish lines within the open defense and aggressive possibilities in the closed.

The line you mentioned is one possibility that could limit our options in that open variation. However white has the ability to limit our options after Be7 too. For example white could stop us from playing the Marshall attack with 8.a4:
www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer?node=1832213&move=8.5&moves=e4.e5.Nf3.Nc6.Bb5.a6.Ba4.Nf6.O-O.Be7.Re1.b5.Bb3.O-O.a4

This early in the game both sides have multiple plans to choose from with no clear consensus about which one is "best".  Since we all have different preferences it is unlikely that everyone will agree on the best plan. As someone else pointed out there are actually other options besides Bxe7 and Nxe4.

Thanks for your explanations. There aren't "best" lines but as long as we stay in the "known theory", we can avoid mistakes.

I vote for 4...Nf6. I suppose it gives us more possibilities (open/closed Ruy Lopez and variations like Chigorin Variation and Marshall Attack).

Avatar

Really loved your avatar design but the text "Bitvest" looks kinda small in lower size to fit. Try using all 120 width with text and make it bigger because that is the only thing which represents what avatar is all about
And the avatar looks really cool in big size

Thanks for the advice Smiley
Of course, I can resize the text.

@camelson: your logo designs look professional indeed. I wish mine were as good. But we have to respect the OP's decision.
Nothing worse than a bad loser. Better luck next time!

Most likely he will play the Ruy Lopez. We need to decide which line we want in that - if we screw up the moves, he'll retain a huge advantage.
As predicted by actmyname, we're dealing with the Ruy Lopez or Spanish Game.

Several options are available, including:

3...a6 (Morphy Defence)
3...Nf6 (Berlin Defence)
3...Bc5 (Classical or Cordel Defence)
3...Nge7 (Cozio Defence)
3...g6 (Smyslov Defence)
3...Nd4 (Bird's Defence)
3...d6 (Steinitz Defence)
3...f5!? (Schliemann Defence or Jaenisch Gambit)

I vote for a6. What do you think?
