Thanks for your explanations. There aren't "best" lines but as long as we stay in the "known theory", we can avoid mistakes.

Exactly! We are unlikely to get into trouble within the next few moves with either of the move suggestions above.  One problem with just memorizing theory however is that once the game deviates from it you are on your own.  It helps to be familiar enough with the general opening ideas that you won't feel lost the moment you opponent plays an unexpected move.

For any beginners wondering, b5 prevents the threat of Bxc6 and Nxe5. For example:

6.Re1  O-O
7.Bxc6 dxc6
8.Nxe5

The same idea did not work last move because of e4 being unprotected:

6.Bxc6 dxc6
7.Nxe5 Nxe4 regaining the pawn.

I don't like this opening so far. I always go for the Grunfeld defense when I play black.
Right now, as things stand, I would play d6 to defend e5, but I have never played this position before.

I'm gonna go with b5 over d6 because i think it gives us a more open field for attack while also putting pressure on him. I'd rather not block the bishop in, I like it holding that line and where it can head to.

I like playing the Grünfeld Defence when I get the change against 1.c4 and 1.d4 too. What opening do you prefer against 1.e4? The Sicilian?

I cannot answer that yet as it depends on what white does in the next few moves. In some variations we may play Bb7 but in others the bishop is better off on another square (such as e6 of g4).

I can't remember the last time I had to google as much as this thread! I thought bishops had vows against that?

You can't really go into the Grunfield when they go for an e4 opening.

It opens up the possibility to pin his knight and that pin could not be resolved without giving us time for one additional move
