Thanks for your explanations. There aren't "best" lines but as long as we stay in the "known theory", we can avoid mistakes.
Exactly! We are unlikely to get into trouble within the next few moves with either of the move suggestions above. One problem with just memorizing theory however is that once the game deviates from it you are on your own. It helps to be familiar enough with the general opening ideas that you won't feel lost the moment you opponent plays an unexpected move.

I'll wipe the floor with anyone who goes against me in chess.
Then please join our game and help us "wipe the floor" with OP. We have a clean slate and have yet to make any mistakes this game! Indeed, this is a very clean game with the board setup for some serious play right now! And I keep trying to bring us down the rabbit hole! Thanks for the links in your posts, they really help. OK, appreciate the encouragement guys I'll keep making calls that deviate from everyone else! Except Morecoin Freeman, we seem to be on the same line.

I vote 6...b5. b5: 2 votes (galdur, hermesesus) b5: 3 votes (galdur, hermesesus, languagehasmeaning) For any beginners wondering, b5 prevents the threat of Bxc6 and Nxe5. For example: 6.Re1 O-O 7.Bxc6 dxc6 8.Nxe5 The same idea did not work last move because of e4 being unprotected: 6.Bxc6 dxc6 7.Nxe5 Nxe4 regaining the pawn.

Thanks for your explanations. It's clear now. I suppose we can also play 6...d6 to prevent this threat?

I don't like this opening so far. I always go for the Grunfeld defense when I play black. Right now, as things stand, I would play d6 to defend e5, but I have never played this position before.

I'm gonna go with b5 over d6 because i think it gives us a more open field for attack while also putting pressure on him. I'd rather not block the bishop in, I like it holding that line and where it can head to. Thx for the explanations guys it really helps. I'd love to be able to march those pawns up a few but I'm sure we'll never get that chance. Lol b5: 4 votes (Hueristic, galdur, hermesesus, languagehasmeaning) d6 1 vote (Morecoin Freeman)

I'll go for b5 as well. Do we want to fianchetto the bishop on c1?

I like playing the Grünfeld Defence when I get the change against 1.c4 and 1.d4 too. What opening do you prefer against 1.e4? The Sicilian?

Do we want to fianchetto the bishop on c8?
I cannot answer that yet as it depends on what white does in the next few moves. In some variations we may play Bb7 but in others the bishop is better off on another square (such as e6 of g4).

You can't really go into the Grunfield when they go for an e4 opening. b5: 7 votes (Hueristic, galdur, hermesesus, languagehasmeaning, boolberry, swogerino, actmyname) d6 1 vote (Morecoin Freeman)

I can't remember the last time I had to google as much as this thread! I thought bishops had vows against that?

I vote for d6
It opens up the possibility to pin his knight and that pin could not be resolved without giving us time for one additional move

I will also go for d6. Think it's still not the time for b5. Just let his bishop stand there doing not that much.
