702  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: I applaud you, Bitcoin Magazine on: November 16, 2012, 06:24:36 PM
Not sure that keeping MNW on-board at all was the best decision, but good luck to you, Mihai.

This is a misconception. MNW is in the credits because he had helped out with one of the articles that got pushed back into 4 from a previous issue months ago, and there was no point in scrapping the entire article just to be able to put a "Matthew-free" sticker on the issue. He has not provided any input into Bitcoin Magazine since September, he will not be in the credits for #5, and we have no plans to bring him back.

Does this mean #5 will have Matthew-free stickers?

I'd consider paying extra if this is the case.
703  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Time for a renewed push to get EFF to accept Bitcoins? on: November 16, 2012, 02:09:05 PM
I think the EFF is a pretty sharp bunch, are watching from the sidelines intently, and will accept Bitcoin when they decide the moment is right.

I agree, and appreciate all that the EFF has done for our society in defense of freedom. In not accepting Bitcoin, they're just trying to protect themselves so that they can continue doing great things. I truly think they have their (and those of whom they protect) best interests at heart.

However, I believe their fears are unfounded. On top of that, their actions have scared away others from accepting Bitcoin. If they had never accepted Bitcoin in the first place, and just said "maybe in the future" there wouldn't have been any problem, but the way they went about it almost certainly scared some potential big players away.

704  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2012-11-16 forbes.com - What's Your Bitcoin Strategy? on: November 16, 2012, 01:37:13 PM
The block halving is coming up, Wordpress and possibly Reddit are going to accept BTC as payment... things are about to get more interesting.
705  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: I applaud you, Bitcoin Magazine on: November 16, 2012, 12:10:21 PM
How's it for getting pdf versions of these online?

And just to not stirr up controversy: I was thinking of paid copies of course.

For the first issue, I got a PDF of the magazine sent to my email. Haven't got anything for the rest, but I'm not really sure if I'm supposed to. I don't need the digital version as long as I have the physical version, so I haven't really thought about it much.
706  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: BTCJam forum name verification on: November 16, 2012, 04:32:42 AM
I want to link my Bitcointalk name with BTCJam's. Verification code: 57da5237-6357-4c83-a110-ffd33d8ee908
707  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Building bitcoind on xubuntu 12.04 on: November 15, 2012, 03:49:41 AM
Try:
Code:
apt-cache search libdb4.8

I'm also running Xubuntu 12.04, and I've compiled bitcoind before. I don't recall having any problems but before compiling, all the dependencies were already in place from installing the Bitcoin-qt client from the PPA.
708  Economy / Service Discussion / I applaud you, Bitcoin Magazine on: November 15, 2012, 03:21:26 AM

Just got issue #4, and I have to say, the quality is far superior to not only issue #1, but also issues #2 and #3. By quality I mean both content and print quality. I see that Mihai Alisie is now editor-in-chief, while Matthew N. Wright has been moved to a contributing writer. Not sure that keeping MNW on-board at all was the best decision, but good luck to you, Mihai.

The magazine has been extremely useful in introducing new people to the currency. Something about having a physical manifestation of something (such as BTC Magazine or Casascius coins) really seems to work well for getting people interested. Keep on improving, you guys!
709  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin as a Christmas gift? on: November 14, 2012, 01:43:32 AM
I was considering doing the same thing, probably with Casascius coins. I figure it'll get family and friends interested in Bitcoin and get them started at the same time, killing two birds with one stone! Maybe I should offer to buy them back off of them if they'd rather just have the fiat cash... I'd gladly take 'em back.  Grin
710  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Torrent of the latest blockchain checkpoint on: November 13, 2012, 11:53:02 PM
And why you think that downloading torrent separately and placing it in Bitcoin data directory is easier for first-timers than simply running the Bitcoin client that synchronizes automatically?

There might be something to improve in Bitcoin such as requesting different blocks from multiple nodes for better download speed and reduced load on uploading nodes.

It's more complicated, sure, but downloading the blockchain via torrent is significantly faster at this point. If blockchain sync/download improves in the Satoshi client, that might change, but I'm talking about now.
711  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Torrent of the latest blockchain checkpoint on: November 13, 2012, 08:59:13 PM
There is already a blockchain torrent.  See this:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=117982.0

Additionally, if you are getting a slow network sync inside the bitcoin client, simply stop and restart.  This will get you a new download peer.

I wasn't getting a slow sync, I asked because I wanted to make sure a better option was available for newcomers who want to download a copy of the blockchain, but don't want to face slow download times. Thanks for the link Jeff, I'll be seeding!
712  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Torrent of the latest blockchain checkpoint on: November 13, 2012, 08:29:09 PM
Would anyone be willing to seed a torrent of the latest blockchain snapshot from SourceForge? I'm getting 80KB/s downloading it right now...  Embarrassed

I'll make a torrent once I've downloaded the blockchain from SourceForge, let me know if you'll seed it. Alternatively, if a torrent is already out there, let me know so I can seed THAT instead!
713  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [ANN] Hardware wallet project on: November 11, 2012, 08:35:09 PM
@Ente

I think it caters for a pretty wide niche : people who do not know what a private key is and are not interested in finding out.

If they are fairly techy they can set one up themselves and it should be plug and play with their desktop bitcoin wallet.

I imagine we are all informal IT support for our family. For people who trust you, you could set one up for them and keep the mnemonic phrase in a sealed envelope. They can use it and not think about private keys. Then if/ when they call you for help because they have lost their WhateverItIsCalled you can sort them out.

Eh, it'd be better to let them keep their own envelope, perhaps in a safe or something. I can just imagine a situation where that "informal IT support" guy's house burns down, along with all of his family/friends' seeds to their funds.

"Gee, that's too bad about your house burning down. By the way, I lost my WhateverItIsCalled, can you help me out?"
714  Economy / Securities / Re: [NASTY MINING] on: November 11, 2012, 06:11:47 PM
The delay is well exceeding any reasonable reason.
We have to pick up the pieces and carry on I think.

I wouldn't count Nefario out just yet, but I agree that this delay is ridiculous. I have to wonder how in the world Nefario thinks people would trust him again if he tried to start up a "legit" version of GLBSE.
715  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What are the chances of an address collision? and what happens when it does? on: November 03, 2012, 09:46:52 PM
Ok, new data, will recalc everything:

  • probability of getting struck by lightning in any given year: 1/280000.
  • probability of taking a shit at any given point in time: 1/(60*24) = 1/1440 (assuming you take a crap every day and the actual process takes 1 minute)
  • probability of getting struck by lightning while taking a crap in any given year: 1/(280000*1440) = 1/1.47E11 = 2.48E-9
  • probability of taking a crap while being in a situation where being struck by lightning can actually occur = 1/1440 = 0.25 = 1.74E-4
  • probability of finding a collision: 1E-65
  • getting hit by lightning while taking a crap for how many years in a row is equally probable as finding a collision: log(1E-65) / log(1.74E-4) = 17.3

is my math roughly correct now?

If so, I can say: "Finding a collision is about as likely as being struck by lightning while taking a crap every year for 17 years in a row".

You, good sir, have surely created the new standard of explaining address collision probability to noobs. I will refer to your great work in any instance I'm asked this question.
716  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin algorithm change on: October 30, 2012, 12:56:29 PM
Would it be even remotely possible to force the change in sha256 bitcoin algorith to something else that asic and fpga devices couldnt compute?

We started off with a bitcoin that anyone could use and now were forced to buy stuff we dont really want.

I realise that there are some ppl that allready invested in asic and fpga, but ton off ppl are unsatisfied with this.

Do U think btc should move away from sha256 and let "normal" people the chance ?

Even if there was an algorithm change, someone would create an ASIC Bitcoin miner for the new algorithm.

Also, by having dedicated Bitcoin mining hardware (as opposed to using GPUs), the money that miners pay for their hardware goes directly back into the Bitcoin economy most of the time. For instance, by paying for an ASIC mining unit in BTC, your BTC is being paid to the employees in the company manufacturing it, who then will spend it elsewhere. When miners buy GPUs, they're giving fiat money to AMD. While their employees may use Bitcoin, I would imagine their use is at a much lower level than that of employees in a Bitcoin-centric company.

All I want to hear, that my assets are ok. That is all.

Welcome to the club. Have a seat, you'll probably be waiting a while.
719  Economy / Securities / Re: [NASTY MINING] on: October 20, 2012, 03:00:07 PM
I imagine that Nefario will only be sending out lists once. That means everyone needs to provide GLBSE with their information before the list can be sent. There are probably people who had accounts and forgot their login or other strange issues that will need to be worked out first. Just be patient. Things are very much in motion and exciting developments are on the way that will greatly please fans of this operation.

I would hope that he's waiting for a critical mass of users to fill out the form, but certainly not every user. I'm sure a few people simply forgot about their accounts, forgot their password, or aren't submitting their information for other reasons. Nefario should send out the info to asset issuers when the amount of people submitting info has slowed to a trickle, and simply include the number of shares that are owned by people who have not submitted information. This way asset issuers can set aside dividends for when the holders of those assets do submit their info.

Exciting developments sound exciting. Grin

I'd just like to take this opportunity to give props to Gavin Andresen on his warnings about GLBSE back in the days of the bitcoin show.

Agreed. Good on him for not letting greed cloud his judgement.
