7081  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: JOE WEISENTHAL calls bitcoin a joke. I'm laughing all the way to the bank. on: November 07, 2013, 09:49:26 PM
USD is worth something because ultimately it's backed by an army that can insist you pay your property tax in USD, and because it's backed by the outflow of payments from the US government, which only pays its people and contractors in USD.

The USSR once had a rather large schlong too. Just sayin'
7082  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: JOE WEISENTHAL calls bitcoin a joke. I'm laughing all the way to the bank. on: November 07, 2013, 09:47:57 PM
Intrinsic value, subjective value, objective value...here's my question to Joe:  If somebody wants to buy bitcoins, and I have some I want to sell, how much should I sell them for?

When the proudhons of the world point to this folly, the Weisenthals might do well to listen.
7083  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Biggest Issue (Service Giving Scams) on: November 07, 2013, 09:29:15 PM
Not scalable for millions of users: Paypal can handle millions of transactions/day - Bitcoin cannot, and it would require revolutionary changes to the protocol to fix that problem

I have seen you make this claim several times before. I don't recall seeing your derivation thereof. Please show your work. The numerical assumptions that go into your proof will help to target the parts that need improvement.
7084  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The "51% attack", what is it exactly ? on: November 07, 2013, 09:00:39 PM
Bitcoin without Satoshi is like Apple without Jobs.

...which continues to rack up ever-higher record profits due to the continued release of fine products the public snaps up on droves.

Just checked the first page (the first time since I read it when I first saw this thread). Big red letters say something about reservations? I don't know if I reserved, but yeah, I'll be coming, and will have a +1. I'm bringing my spouse. No, that doesn't mean an increase in boobies.

Now you're just deliberately confusing people Wink

I think it is a girl masquerading as a gay. But I have been wrong before...

I met Rassah in San Jose. He's not a girl...
7086  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Whatever happened to Ripple? on: November 06, 2013, 08:06:00 PM
It's true, Ripple is open-source, the source code is on github and it is publicly accessible... check out http://www.github.com/ripple/rippled for the source!

Hopefully you can believe what your eyes show you Grin

Who ya gonna believe - me or your lying eyes?

Thanks - I'll check it out. Anything to say on 50%/25% 'premine'?
7087  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Whatever happened to Ripple? on: November 06, 2013, 07:23:55 PM
I saw a claim on one thread that Ripple is now open source. I also saw a claim on the same thread that OpenWhateverTheirNameIs has reduced their XRP holdings from 50% to 25%.

I don't know whether to believe either claim.

Anyone? Where's JoelKatz when you need him? (I'd trust your reply, JoelKatz)
7088  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinfloor - new UK exchange - thoughts? on: November 05, 2013, 09:22:58 PM
Thoughts?

Confloor.
Nefario.
GLBSE.
Bungled shutdown.
Criminally negligent.

Just no.

which main act or dj would you like to meet at the party ?

I'm old as dirt. While I enjoy a little EDM, give us crusty old timers some more traditional rock-oriented act, too.

“I would not see why we at Swift could not send transactions in bitcoin as a currency.” - SWIFT CEO Gottfried Leibbrandt, 2013 Sep 16
ps: please enlighten me about your sig. what is he talking about Huh??

Got it from a news story. Apparently, the CEO of SWIFT is actively pondering the possibility of the worldwide financial settlements backbone employing bitcoin as it's underlying infrastructure.

Of course, this may be an offhand comment taken out of context. But fascinating nonetheless.
7091  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: announcement: the international "when-bitcoin-reaches 1000,- $ party" on: November 01, 2013, 01:51:49 AM
1BTC? 1000$? For one day? [You didn't write anywhere how many days the event will take, so I assume it'll be one day]
In Poland I can live off that sum for three months. 1BTC is not a play-money for me.
Since I won't be a millionaire by 1000$, it's too big of a sum to loose in a single day. Count me out. My frugality says "not yet".

However if there will be another party at 10k$ priced at 0.2BTC, count me in!

I don't think you're looking at this the right way. You could set aside the 1 XBT for the ticket today. Your out-of-pocket expense is then about $202 or whatever the current price is*. This could be a once-in-a-lifetime rager experience. Taking part in the most memorable party ever for $202 seems like a reasonable value to me.

*I set my 2 XBT aside before the recent runup in price (2 'cause I'd bring a guest). You're right - it is not chump change, but I think it could end up being a significant value.

If a more value-minded subset materializes, you could certainly organize your own downscale version of the same event. Maybe we could have several geographically dispersed, and link them together via video. I'd still want to go to the Big Show, though - and I am even usually quite frugal.

Dark Wallet is an "Easy-To-Install plug-in that sits discreetly on users' chrome and firefox browsers
how is a browser plugin discrete at all? it's as discrete as a browser bookmark to a (porn) site.

usage: The words discrete and discreet are pronounced in the same way and share the same origin but they do not mean the same thing. Discrete means ‘separate,’ as in a finite number of discrete categories, while discreet means ‘careful and circumspect,’ as in you can rely on him to be discreet .
in this case, i don't see how a browser plugin is more "discrete"(separate) than any other app.

Sorry to carry on pedantically, but that would not be the 'discreetly' in the OP, but rather 'discretely':

discrete |disˈkrēt|
adjective
individually separate and distinct: speech sounds are produced as a continuous sound signal rather than discrete units.
DERIVATIVES
discretely adverb,

Ripple issues a virtual currency known as Ripples, of which it holds a 25 percent slice.

I thought OpenCoin held on to half of all Ripples? Was I wrong from the beginning, or did this change while I wasn't looking?

Another change that happened while I wasn't looking. Maybe a time to take a fresh look at Ripple?

Sorry, we were unable to stream it but I'll look for a solution for next time.

No worries - but thanks.

Did he mention any progress in the last half-year or so? I think his org was in discussions with a certain unnamed country, pursuant to being a host for their economic freezone. Do we know where this is yet?

Google seems to be of no help here. Plenty of hits on 'bitcoin: satan's currency', but no such title. Looks like the field is open. Thinking about running for the job? Smiley

Once I give him/her my bitcoins, I am now able to see how much he/she has in that particular wallet

No. You are now able to see how many XBT are on that _address_. Which is why there is a recommendation to always employ a new address for every transaction.
7098  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: announcement: the international "when-bitcoin-reaches 1000,- $ party" on: October 23, 2013, 04:21:09 AM
charity is a must. i would say that it is a major component of this event.

(here's where I get branded as a coldhearted sonofabitch. c'est la guerre)  I disagree. Vehemently.

I have no problem in celebrating those at the event who donate, and perhaps even make fundraising a big part of the activities. But out of the proceeds of the attendance fees? No way. What you feel is a worthwhile charity may be opposed to some of my principles, and vice-versa.

We have funds for a celebration, and funds for worthy causes. Why the heck would you commingle these funds? There is no good reason to.

Good Point, My charity could be another man's terrorist organization.
Here is a workaround
We get a lot of Historic Bitcoin Memorabilia, (by donation whatever) - like fist printing of Bitcoin magazine, a first off minted casascius coin, a Rev1 Usb Block Erupter, some alpaca socks, etc.
And they are auctioned off with proceeds going to a designated charity of choice for the winning bid. (or something similar)

Only bid if you want to donate?

Good workaround. I'd take it one step further. Allow the party that donates each particular item to be auctioned to declare which charity would receive the funds from that lot.

That may be a win/win/win.

Can bitcoin handle a million transactions a second?

I thought I saw a post 'round hereabouts that indicated that the peak transaction volume seen by the Visa network was on the order of 25,000 transactions a second. I took it to be a statement from true knowledge, though I did not verify this for myself.

I guess my point is that it would seem that bitcoin will not have to handle a million transactions a second even if it should become the standard worldwide currency of retail trade - at least for a generation or so.

Of course, I _could_ be repeating the claim of a charlatan.
