7181  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: WannaCry Ransomware Extorts 39 Payments Worth 6.49 BTC – TODAY on: May 15, 2017, 11:24:47 AM
I wonder why the ransom was not requested in DASH?

Basically, because no one gives a fuck about Dash

I'm absolutely sure that the total majority of the MakeMeCry victims have never heard about Dash before (and won't hear thereafter), so it might not make a lot of sense to request payments in this coin. On the other hand, Bitcoin is pretty well known, and it is as easy to buy it as well as transact with it (e.g. via web wallets). Apart from that, the hackers can't be 100% sure that with Dash its blockchain (or what they use for the blockchain) wouldn't be rolled back once the victims are done with payments. This is an unlikely event with Bitcoin

Hmm I would have assumed that their respective IT departments or Technicians would
be making the payments and they would certainly know about Crypto.

I'm not sure I understand the "rolled Back" bit" sorry  Huh

For such a widespread attack I'm really surprised they earned so little. When the news first hit I thought they were going to earn in the millions of dollars.

Obviously its still a lot of money but it could have been way worse, and hopefully the relatively low rewards for such sophisticated attacks will limit the amount of people doing this again in future.

From what I am hearing on various news bulletins on radio here
is that now they know this form of virus attack works it may become more frequent.
7182  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: WannaCry Ransomware Extorts 39 Payments Worth 6.49 BTC – TODAY on: May 15, 2017, 09:57:39 AM
Whatever happened is not good for the bitcoin community. Bitcoin will now be seen as a crime for most of the enforcement agencies and if they start cracking down the innocent bitcoin users, then we are doomed. Most of us try to earn bitcoin legally and not by any other means here. But these hackers have made a bad name for bitcoin now.

The attack is widespread and almost 72 countries effected. This way the respective government will think twice before legalizing bitcoin now. Whatever the good reputation earned by bitcoin, is all gone now and more governments will now be aware about bitcoin circulation in their country. Not good for us!
Bitcoin has been used in many criminal activities long time ago before this issue happened like drug dealers, terorism etc and people already know it that it's clearly not bitcoin's fault but the person it's just like cash. On the other hand the price is still stable as you can see the price at this point it's about 1750 dollars it means there is no panic selling are caused by WannaCry ransomware attack. Besides that bitcoin become more popullar even though in bad way but i trully believe people can see advantage of the bitcoin, those who didn't know it before finally knew it . Well seems like they the hackers giving free promotion for the bitcoin itself. For your information Australia will start accepting bitcoin as a currency from July 1st.

I agree with avikz, I think it gives "bitcoin" a bad name especially with
people who dont understand how it works. When I heard that the ransom
was t be paid in Bitcoin I thought "FFS this is not good" especially at a time
where it is getting good press in Japan and Australia.

I think bitcoin could be seen as something underground and linked to criminal
activity, i know, i know - just like FIAT

I wonder why the ransom was not requested in DASH?

7185  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Getting Started -Bellacoin on: May 14, 2017, 12:34:47 AM
Thanks for the reply. I visited the belacoin site.
And they have a page to 5 mining pools which i have to check out.

Which is better to mine with, cpu or gpu?

The PC i have has a 64bit processor, not sure about.
The graphics card but its not a new system, would i.
Be overworking an old(ish) system by starting mining?
7186  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which is the best way to earn btc on: May 12, 2017, 03:40:52 PM
You could sell stuff in exchange for BTC. There were a few people selling stuff on Craigslist and local sites like that and accepting BTC as a payment option.

Yes That is also a good way to earn or make Bitcoin.
ETSY marketplace also allows "Shop" owners to accept payment by Bitcoin

You could also check out the GOODS section here on BitcoinTalk, link below!

Hmmmmm some very good points above especially when it comes to helping humanity.
I may be starting to reconsider my opinion....

What comes to mind is a recent scenario here in ireland where a group of around 600
people suffer from Cystic Fibrosis and a new drug ORKAMBI is so expensive that the
Government initially couldnt afford to procure it.

Should the pharmaceutical companies for instance be allowed to basically hold
society to account to fund their profits?

If this wasnt the case would we have the drugs and medical tools etc. We have today?

I hope i havent moved the goalposts, i think this still comes down to IP and how.
The pharma companies operate......
7189  Other / Politics & Society / Re: VOTE * Do you believe in "Intellectual Property" laws? on: May 11, 2017, 11:04:10 PM
do you not think there has to be some protection for people who create and develop?

suppose you invent the scissors after a lot of development consisting of time and expense and
show it to me as a potential investor . . .

"Thanks lads, that was a great idea, there's the door, I'll produce this myself,
come back to me with your next invention and I'll just rip you off and copy it, again...simple!"

7191  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A serious obstacle for bitcoin's popularity on: May 11, 2017, 07:24:44 PM
Yes, i think this is the single biggest think which will hold bitcoin back.
Everyone expects their transactions to be processed in a reasonable timeframe.
Sadly for those micropayments which have a very very low fee attached they get
pushed to the back of the queue so to speak.

this was touched on over on the 'halving' thread where miners rewards are going to be halved in
Close to 3 years, which in turn will put pressure on the mining business, which will amplify the
Current problem i think.

Could we see tdansactions being held to ransom by a small group of mining pools who may very well
Control the whole business

7193  Other / Politics & Society / Re: VOTE * Do you believe in "Intellectual Property" laws? on: May 11, 2017, 11:11:17 AM
IP is a necessary evil, without it there will be little new research and development if everyone can freely steal your research and ideas. A lot of development costs a lot of money.

I do however believe it is in need of reform, particularly in certain fields where it does the opposite of fostering development it restricts it. For example patents that are held for the sole reason of preventing development or companies that buy patents simply to sue others for using something similar.

I agree with this also!
I have first hand experience of this but on a very small scale.

about 10 years ago I came up with a little photography tool after creation and testing
I discovered someone else had patented something similar, not the same but had
factored in all manners of similar items which rendered my creation redundant while
this patent existed.

It was just a patent that was never brought to production but hampered the development
of my idea.

So in the big business world I can see how this could be a major source of frustration.

However I do agree with the concept of IP but as has been mentioned it needs updating.
7194  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Macron supporting bitcoin? what does it mean for us? on: May 11, 2017, 09:28:23 AM
Perhaps we will see some positive light in France regarding Bitcoin at the very least it looks like a positive sign.
What happens in legislation though will reveal if that is really a good or bad thing although that was taken a while back and it presumes that Macron remembers every event he attended and photos he has posed for.

Bitcoin has never shown any negative sign in any country in the world, it is perfectly fine. It's not recognized yet, but it's being recognized. I believe France will be the next country to accept bitcoin as a legitimate currency, and if that happens, I think the value of bitcoin will rise even higher.

Australia is going to be next country to adopt Bitcoin and in general Crypto Currencies.

See my thread here > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1911873.0

In an effort to attract more Digital Currency businesses they are treating digital
currencies like cash in relation to sales tax.

Hopefully this will highlight the crypto world even more and maybe France will follow next?
7195  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Australia moving forward on: May 11, 2017, 07:04:04 AM
I just read this article this morning on.
https://cointelegraph.com/news/bitcoin-to-become-just-like-money-in-australia-july-1.

“From 1 July 2017, purchases of digital currency will no longer be subject to the GST, allowing digital currencies to be treated just like money for GST purposes. Currently, consumers who use digital currencies can effectively bear GST twice: once on the purchase of the digital currency and once again on its use in exchange for other goods and services subject to the GST.”

This is really positive news a a big step forward.
Following on from japans good news story are we seeing a snowball effect?
7196  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: New Project WorkingForBitcoins.com! Come help test it out! on: May 10, 2017, 11:00:14 PM
You may have to "invest" in some marketing to boost awareness

or consider a signature campaign or bounty campaign by users here
and elsewhere  to draw attention to the fact that you have a cool project.

anyway I'll be following the thread  Wink
7197  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin as a source of income? on: May 10, 2017, 10:53:41 PM
Today many people rely on bitcoin, in the sense that they are now focusing on the world of cryptocurrency, leaving their jobs

Is there something like this, is there any special tips because i want to focus but not yet dare?

I think there is a tons of online earner who depends only in crypto currency at the moment.
But there are others who just do it in their free time to earn some extra cash.

Yup this is me, a part time earner. Im lucky i have a full time job.
But i try to generate extra funds with alternative coins to build my bitcoin.
There are definitely people out there making a living off bitcoin, just trading and gambling.

I do not have any day job and I am totally depending on crypto currencies and other online earnings for my living and I am also very happy because I am giving my whole day to my online job and I am earning a good income which is enough for my living and I do not need any day job.

This is excellent! its clear that you know what you
are doing if you are able to make a living from crypto currencies.

are you trading and/or gambling?

personally I wouldnt be interested in gambling eventhough
a lot of people would call trading gambling also.

7199  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Belacoin - Supercharging entrepreneurship with the power of the blockchain on: May 10, 2017, 11:15:33 AM
Dark Gravity Wave will fix an issue that has been affecting the Belacoin blockchain where blocks won't be found for an extended period of time.

The Problem: Occasionally, there will be extended periods of time where no block is found on the Belacoin Blockchain.
What are the consequences of this? Transactions are not processed until a block is found. Your coins are 100% safe, but it can be frustrating to have to wait a long time to receive your coins.
Why does this happen? There are mining pools out there that search for the most profitable coin to mine and switch to it for as long as it is the #1 most profitable coin. A lot of the time, that coin is Belacoin. When these mining pools switch to Belacoin, the current difficulty regulator (Kimoto Gravity Well) spikes the difficulty to keep the 2 minute block times consistent. Then, the mining pools drop off because Belacoin is no longer the most profitable coin to mine, but the difficulty remains very high. Now, it can take several hours for the next block to be found. Once the next block is found, the difficulty readjusts back to normal and everything continues smoothly again.

The Solution: Dark Gravity Wave Mining Difficulty Regulator
Why is is a solution? Dark Gravity Wave (DGW) was created to solve this very problem. It takes more of a moving average so the difficulty does not spike so hard when a new mining pool hops on. It's more dynamic and flexible than Kimoto Gravity Well and will help reduce those long periods of time where no block is found.

Yes I knew it was a mining related thing which in turn affects
payments and transfers for users.

You description clears up my query, thanks again!

Also I wasnt aware that Belacoin was [one of] the most profitible
coins to mine, thats interesting ....

I suppose we can only speculate as to what this means.

I like some of the posts thus far. He may have been funded
by the maker of the storage, he may be a bitcoiner and he may just
have been an investor in that business.

He is though very much pro EU and as has been mentioned above
which could also have other interesting consequences if he is a Bitcoiner.

As the second largest economy in the EU and a country with a lot of
infleuence along with Germany, He may have plans to do something
similar to what Japan has recently done by recognising Bitcoin as a
legitamate mode of payment.

Japans stance has not gone unnoticed by the rest of the world, lets see  Wink
