721  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5970 and 5870 will not accept drivers on: March 02, 2012, 08:37:13 PM
Thanks, flashed the mobo bios, because there are some known issues booting from USB.

Well low and behold I found it the 5970 is just dead.
So it's FOCD. (Found on Computer Dead) Cry
Was it overheating?
722  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: ~3GH/s in a 4U rackmount case. (30GH/s+ in a 45U server rack?) on: March 02, 2012, 08:32:40 PM
So I think I found my radiator.

http://www.brazetek.com/products/details/46/15/finned-coil-water-to-air-heat-exchangers/16x16-finned-coil-water-to-air-heat-exchanger

http://www.brazetek.com/files/imagecache/product/wahx_3.jpg

Should have roughly 2x the surface area as the average 12" x 12" oil cooler.   Likely I will use some pex tubing with crimp connectors and a radiant heating circulation pump for the outer loop.  I sent an email to the company asking for some more details but comparing it against other radiators and doing some back of napkin heat flow guestimates I think it should be able to dump 7KW to 8 KW with a 20C rise over ambient.  That would be ~55C water temps (maybe GPU 2 to 3 C higher) in peak of summer.

For fans I am going to experiment with some cheap electric car radiator fans maybe 2x 7" or 1x 12".  I would prefer 2 fans as it provides some slow fail redundancy.  I only need about 1000 to 1200 cfm of airflow (unless my math is way off) and radiator fans tend to move a lot more.  I am going to see if they can be undervolted to spin slower with less noise.

Let me know how you get along with PEX. It is really stiff, and I would be interested to know how well the press-on fittings hold at low water pressures. Works great for house water at high pressure, since that's what it is meant for.

Will do.  I have a crimping tool from some home remodeling work already.  I will likely make a test loop involving just pump, radiator, and heat exchanger and leave it running.  The reason I would like to use PEX is I could take an off the shelf radiant heating manifold and use that for splitting the run to each rig.

That radiator is rad. Cheesy Same price range as units that are sold for PC's but the advantage of dumping more heat. Schweet!

With PEX you can get a 3/8" inside diameter hose on to a 1/2" diameter PEX fitting (not compression). Fit should be very tight.

To any sane person the bad news is all on linode.
So you are not willing to believe that the Dole food chain (salads specifically) were poisoned in order to profit from put option trades?
There are hundreds more of this type of examples for stocks. Of course there are no put options for Bitcoins but the method can still be used to profit or attack the value. Good and bad news has reactive tangible effects on volatile markets, of which Bitcoin is one.
724  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hacked Linode & coins stolen to 1NRy8GbX56MymBhDYM... on: March 02, 2012, 05:13:53 PM
You missed  - on eligius, added bonus:
The coins you receive are virgin whereas with most pools you potentially could get mixed/old coins.

What is the advantage of virgin coins  Huh

weren't you the one that brought up the whole concept of taint recently?

virgin coins have 0% taint.

I thought Taint was the space between the vajayjay and the brown eye.

It would seem Linode is the weakest link for those hosting bitcoin stuff. Customers will need to implement a system that can thwart Linodes retardedness.

Could this be another attempt to manipulate the market with bad news? The stolen funds would remain in hibernation because they are not needed when the theft is for damaging BTC value via bad news.

@DAT
You can reduce your cooling cost by using the earth as a heat sink and temperatures will always be in the high 50's or low 60's.
Quote
The "Earth Coupled Air Tube" technology is a low cost solution to reduce the cost of heating and cooling your home. By using the Earth as a heat sink anyone can heat and cool their house for less. Unlike the ground loop heat pump, air tubes don't require deep wells, compressors, pumps, Storage tanks, coils, heat exchangers, complex plumbing, or all the problems inherent in a complex equipment/technology intensive heating and cooling system. Properly installed air tubes don't have any moving parts. They can't break. The only technology required is a fan to move the air through the tubes and into the house. Earth tubes are relatively inexpensive to install and are inexpensive to operate.
http://earthairtubes.com/

Your cost of operating this is the cost of running a fan. sweet!
729  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Mining rig extraordinaire - the Trenton BPX6806 18-slot PCIe backplane [PICS] on: February 28, 2012, 01:57:07 PM
If you can get the system working we have some interesting numbers.

16 x 5970 @ 390 MH/s per GPU = 12480 MH/s
At the current difficulty and at a value of $4.8 per BTC would see break even in less than 6 months.
This includes $1200 for the system build and $400 per 5970.

16 X 7990 @ 600 MH/s per GPU = 19200 MH/s
At the current difficulty and at a value of $4.8 per BTC would see break even in 7 months.
This includes $1200 for the system build and $849 per 7990

It would be nice if it can be hashing before the halving.

I think I might have an interesting lead.
PICMG 1.3 board with a chipset that supports IOMMU and also the chipset can be built using Coreboot linux.
The board:
http://www.ryaim.com/products/singlebd/new_SBC/SPCIE-3600AM2.htm

This board uses the Nvidia MPC55 chipset, which Coreboot has been built in to, but for a Tyan S2912.
http://www.coreboot.org/Supported_Motherboards#Servers

If Coreboot is better to work with like for allocating resources for pci devices above 4G to expand the # of GPU's that are recognized similar to the fastra II project, that would be sweet.

Review the xorg.config file, also try using another boot medium, LiveCD, another Flash/hard drive with fresh install.
Have you been running 4 cards all along or did you just add in some new cards?

I wonder if you can check the slots for continuity?

Looks like the chipset options on intel for VT-d are Q35, Q45, Q67, and C20*. So far your board choice looks pretty good.
http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?s=66d3b34a50d14b446bdb2987a3f069a1&p=2965518#post2965518

But you keyboard commandos are a little quicker than I am. Cheesy

I wonder how the mapping would go with 16x 5970's, 4 per OS, conflicts?

Your board:
Q67 for QG2 version; B65 for QVG version; C206 for WG2 version

Some additional chipsets that have VT-d:
VT-d is enabled on the following chipsets:

Intel Q35 GMCH with ICH9 DO (Bearlake chipset)

The following chipsets have VT-d capability, but OEMs may not have enabled in systems based on these:
   Intel X38
   Intel X48
VT-d will be enabled on these future products:
    Intel Q45 (Eaglelake)
For Intel Desktop Boards, these have VT-d support enabled:
   Intel DQ35JO
   Intel DQ35MP
   Intel DX38BT
   Intel DX48BT2
These future Intel Desktop Boards will have VT-d support:
   Intel DQ45CB
   Intel DQ45EK

735  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: [HowTo] Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop 32-bit mining install guide on: February 25, 2012, 05:14:29 AM
In the section:

## Installing the ATI Linux 32-bit Drivers (version 11.5)

Code:
wget http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run
sudo sh ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/natty

Does this build the 11.5 driver or does it build the driver of the card for the system it's built on?
I built this on a system I don't intend it for, that has an x1950. It used an AMD 8.861 to build, ??fglrx_8.861??.deb. Was planning on just copying the .deb over to the other system.
736  Bitcoin / Pools / P2Pool Server List on: February 25, 2012, 02:07:31 AM
The goal is to provide a list of servers located near you, to make connecting locally simpler. Act locally, think globally, Cheesy .
This will help to spread the word about P2Pool, providing an opportunity to try it out without having to setup a server or node.
If you are running a P2Pool server you can share your details here. It is transitional easing to get people involved.

What's the point of making my node accessible to the public?
You like the P2Pool concept and have decided to run P2Pool for your hashing needs. You understand what it takes to maintain a server and so decide to offer your node for public use in order to help those who may not be in a position to set up a P2Pool node themselves. You understand that this isn't a way that will make you rich but it will get you positive karma points. Wink

Alert: If you have already taken the time to upgrade p2pool, it is now on version 3.1. If you haven't upgraded your node please do so as soon as possible.
For more information about the p2pool upgrade, please see: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=18313.msg971005#msg971005

To use a pool listed below, follow your miners instructions for connecting to a pool.
For example, to connect using CGMiner:
Code:
cgminer -o http://pool:port -u username -p password
Replace 'username' with your BTC address where the payments are to be sent.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0

Notes:
Would you like to run P2Pool for the community, ThiagoCMC has a Complete P2Pool Guide:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=62842.0

#Modified: Jaycoin has built a modified p2pool node with a PHP front end to always offer diff1 shares to hashers. This helps to reduce variance in finding blocks and helps when receiving block rewards providing more consistent payouts than a standard node. Code for the mods are not yet now public. Check the P2PMining thread for details.

NothinG has created a web version of this server list, featuring graph displays of each pool.
http://nodes.p2pmine.com

Red Emerald has created a Python script to check the status of the servers in this list. It works like ping from Terminal but provides more detail and accuracy.

Copy the text from this link: http://pastie.org/3597839
  • Paste the text into a text editor and name it with a .py extension.
Code:
check_p2pool_server_status.py
  • Save as "all file types"
  • Choose a directory to save to: Desktop
  • In Terminal cd to the directory: Desktop
  • Issue the command:
Code:
sudo python ./check_p2pool_server_status.py
  • Wait a few seconds for results

P67 and Z68 are the southbridge chipsets. My southbridge is SB850, which can run IOMMU but only with a BIOS from Gigabyte tech support.

I've learned a lot reading up on VT-d VT-x issue. Since the SBC uses a board manufactured pre-2005, the chipset on it doesn't support VT-d. According to Intel it requires the chipset to support IOMMU and the CPU to support VT functions.

I'll search around and see if I can find some PICMG with IOMMU.

There can be some confusion regarding VT-d support on specific processors. VT-d is not a feature of the processor itself but rather a feature of the Chipset. As long as the chipset/BIOS combination support VT-d and the processor support VT, there will be VT-d support.

There are no single core socket 604 cpu's that support VT-x.  Cry
VT-x isn't available until "Dempsey" Xeon 5020, 5030 for socket 771.

Edit: There are some dual core 604 sockets, Xeon 7020 that support VT-x. 165w
