7381  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Move from one wallet to another with 12-word seed? on: February 07, 2021, 09:32:44 AM
Charles-Tim, so you recommend neither Atomic nor Exodus; any other Desktop wallet then (which preferably runs on Debian Linux)?
HCP has clarified this enough, and I hope you will get it rightly. The best recommendable is electrum wallet, it is open source wallet and have many features other wallet do not have, features like

1. Open source
2. Can be used to sign a message
3. Use of coin control
4. Multisig support
5. Noncustodial Multiparty computation (2fa)
6. Creating watch-only and cold wallets used together for tracking and transaction signing.
7. Fee customization

All these can not be found on many wallets, while many wallets that are online are close source which should be discouraged to be used because you do not know the source codes such wallets are using. For safety purposes, electrum wallet is the best choice out there, it support only bitcoin but it is really worth it having it as your bitcoin wallet on desktop.

It's one of the big downsides to Electrum, but at least they're open about it: https://electrum.readthedocs.io/en/latest/seedphrase.html
I do not see this as an issue because electrum wallet is just the best online wallet that can be used in cold form too, it is support by strong developers while everything about them is open to the public. What should be the big issue is if electrum wallet can not support BIP39 seed phrase from other wallets, but it does.
7382  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Move from one wallet to another with 12-word seed? on: February 07, 2021, 12:05:06 AM
First of all, it is better to import your seed phrase to the same wallet. Secondly, I will not recommend you exodus wallet because it is close source. Thirdly, I will not recommend you atomic wallet because the wallet do not support nested segwit and native segwit addresses, and also it has only one address, although, it generated BIP39 seed phrase which can be used with some tools to generate the nested segwit and native segwit if need be.

BTC:
Atomic Wallet shows one key pair
Exodus shows two key paris, one of which is identical to the one from Atomic indeed, but the other one is different
So far you see one of the key pair identical, that means it worked for btc. I hate atomic also because it do not generate more than one address, but if you input the atomic wallet seed phrase on iamcoleman tool, it will generate as many as possible addresses for you, the second key pair will be the second address on the iancoleman too while many more addresses are also generated.

ETC:
Both wallets show one key pair each, but different ones
What I wonder about the one in Exodus: It shows a column "Path" with value "m/0/0". I thought the path always has the format "m/44'/0'/0'/0/0"?
I think you can move this to altcoin discussion.

Why doesn't it work? Why are the keys not identical? If I wanted to switch from Atomic to Exodus with some active currencies, it would not work like this. Is any of my expectations wrong?
It worked for Bitcoin while though I will not recommend using atomic and exodus wallets. For altcoin, move it to altcoin discussion.
7383  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Extra security for a paper wallet on: February 06, 2021, 11:44:19 PM
Maybe I didn't explain well. I WANT to create a paper wallet (backup) with, for example, electrum on an offline computer and use generated address from it for long-term storage.
Yes, that is very possible. You can create a paper wallet and import the private key on electrum. Download electrum wallet from electrum.org, open the wallet, then click on Next> import Bitcoin addresses or private keys> paste or use the camara button to scan the QR code and press Next. Then, the wallet will be generated, but make sure you do it on offline device with no connection to the outside world. But, in this case, only that one private key and address will be used. The wallet will not be able to use new address(es).

But, why do you not just create an offline electrum wallet directly. All you need to do is to install electrum wallet on the airgapped/cold electrum device and should not connected to the internet, formatting the device before use will be the best for assurance that it is a cold wallet device. Then create a standard wallet and backup the seed phrase offline which will be accessible by you but safe from attackers. The wallet will be able to generate bech 32 addresses for you and also can be used to generate addresses to send Bitcoin to. The confirmation that you sent bitcoin to an address on the cold wallet can be tracked on blockchain explorer, or create a watch-only electrum wallet on another device for easy tracking.

Question is would you have done the same if you weren't nearly on top of this chart ?  Tongue
I think there is nothing wrong doing that, as we all know merit is a reflection of good posts on this forum, but what we can still just do is to make suggestion for bitmover if he can include more users, like first 50 users. And to make it more accurate, there are some new members with quality posts too that should not be excluded, why not bitmover also have a separate animations for these new members. Just in a suggestion, in a way it will not be bring up people thinking otherwise.
7385  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Verifying signature and other things on: February 06, 2021, 10:28:27 PM
So far you did not google search nor used any search engine, and enter the URL directly and correctly which is electrum.org in a safe computer, that should not be an issue. You can still decide to verify the signature, but I do not think you need to delete your wallet before doing that because the website is not compromised. But, making it just a norm in case for protection purposes in case the website is compromised, the verification will fail after original electrum wallet download file is changed to compromise ones on the website which will indicate the file to download is not the original but a fake/malacious one.

https://electrum.org/#download
Quote
GPG signatures are a proof that distributed files have been signed by the owner of the signing key. For example, if this website was compromised and the original Electrum files had been replaced, signature verification would fail, because the attacker would not be able to create valid signatures. (Note that an attacker would be able to create valid hashes, this is why we do not publish hashes of our binaries here, it does not bring any security).

In order to be able to verify GPG signatures, you need to import the public key of the signer. Electrum binaries are signed with ThomasV's public key. On Linux, you can import that key using the following command: gpg --import ThomasV.asc. Here are tutorials for Windows and MacOS. When you import a key, you should check its fingerprint using independent sources, such as here, or use the Web of Trust.
7386  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Extra security for a paper wallet on: February 06, 2021, 09:56:01 PM
Would it be possible to add an additional layer of protection to seed phrase paper wallet?
Paper wallet do not generate seed phrase, it generate private key and address.

I know it's possible to use a one-way encryption with keyword, but I wonder if there's a way without using additional tools or services? I wouldn't want to use anything that could compromise security.
Using bitaddress.org, you do not need additional tool to generate bip38 passphrase protected paper wallet which is enough for the paper wallet protection.

What do you think? Maybe someone has already developed some proven system?
No other recommendation than to use bip38 passphrase and also protect your private key.

Binance Suspends Deposits in Nigeria Following Central Bank Directive
Quote
Binance has temporarily suspended deposits in Nigerian naira – the country’s local fiat currency – in response to a Friday letter from Nigeria’s central bank (CBN) instructing local banks to identify and close all accounts tied to cryptocurrency platforms or operations.

P2p the way forward.
7388  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Which deposit option to use on Binance?? on: February 06, 2021, 08:35:59 PM
So far you want to transfer Bitcoin, you can either transfer it to BTC which means addresses that start with 1 (legacy addresses). Binance like a month ago or two support native segwit addresses which is BTC(segwit), they are the bitcoin addresses that start with bc1. Never send to the rest, or your bitcoin may be lost forever.

I will advise you to use segwit because it has low transaction fee, latest versions of electrum wallet generate segwit (bc1) addresses and if you send to segwit on binance, the transaction fee will greatly be reduced than sending to legacy addresses.
7389  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The CBN instruction to Nigerian Banks is POLITICAL and government SELFISH reason on: February 06, 2021, 04:23:28 PM
In dissecting these reasons, the first point in relation to the naira from collapsing is nothing to discuss. It holds no brief for the government. The Naira has been on free fall since 1960, during the Nigerian civil war that lasted 3 years and during the first Republic in 1963. The Naira saw her worst falls...
Naira was equals to 1 Pounds Sterling when she became a republic, and naira was having a price higher than dollar at the time. But, naira devalued and continue devaluing and now at $390 to a dollar. A country that depends on importation than exportation while crude oil is more than 70% of their yearly total export annually. They do not focus on how to be a good exporting country but import more while nothing good done than to ban crypto assets in the country.

2. The #ENDSARS protesters made use of crypto channels in release of funds to execute the protest and this is a reason to come up with an obnoxious selfish agenda.
Sorry to be a little bit political with this view. The recent ruling political party, APC are known to one thing, which is lack of democracy. We know how they are not innocent and how they published fake rival party, PDP members and tagged them as embezzlers but not proven while the country has continue to sink since the started of their governance. International monthly spending of $5000 before was changed to $100 during their time, the country GDP which was higher in 2016 decreased significantly and has never reached the highest ever which was in 2016.

If a government wakes up to a decision against certain progressives , it means the masses and larger population will keep going down by the day. The government need to have a decision to grow with modernity.
I doubt anything good could possibly happen because Nigeria means of governance and ways of managing the economy might make Nigeria poor the more. Nigerians should not hide how this current government has been so incapable to rule while maintaining failing old ways that c is crippling the country. Because of EndSARs, they ban cryptocurrencies, not because of anything good, but political.

Because people are complaining about the worst situation of the country's economy, even singers an many more celebrities were among, then the government make constitutional law for hate speeches that people of such will be fined and pay huge amount of money. Just because they want to be authoritative and know their governance is bad. There is always lack of democracy since the start of this present government.

Because of end EndSARs, they ban cryptocurrencies, just because they do not want youths to have freedom to express their mind, to express what they are feeling.

Instead of the government to focus on how to improve the economy and development, but focus only on the political side on how to make Nigeria more authoritative and leaving their main purposes which are good standard of living and development. With the population we have, we are still much far behind, an getting farther behind from developing.

now big Belle people stop our enjoyment. Wetin them lack na information, if you no dey inform you dey deform...
That is why we remain in sept since oyino people leave us to rule ourselves since 1960 when we collect independence. No exposure since olden time even till now. Even the United States only want to regulate crypto while many important people have voiced out how it can be detrimental for them in crypto filed. I just always feel ashame when I realize the government are making old papa steps. Please, how can Nigeria be good when this kind of thing is happening, that means we have leaders that can not represent us good in the world. I can bet it that the CBN governor do not know much about cryptocurrencies. Because likely the EndSARs protest made him know about it, see Nigeria without no exposure. And after they have been looking into it, what will first be revealed to novice that even hate something that counter them to stop people from funding EndSARs are:

1. It is used by criminals, but when money gram, Western Union and many like that which are fiat based are more commonly used for scam and many other criminal purposes.
2. Transactions can not be reversed, when banks are the most dubious and most criminal set of organisations in the world.

They can not fathom out this image below and why the need to only regulate not ban.

I'm looking for a way I could use Electrum with Tor without telling a certain server which addresses I truly own..
Even, if you connect with different VPN, I do not think this will work. I am not expert in this but I know you know Bitcoin core is the answer for such privacy you need or any other reputed full client wallet.
7393  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum wallet help on: February 05, 2021, 08:54:44 PM
Okay but do you think the address I used would still be active and have been able to receive the coins? I’m sure I won’t know for sure until I’m able to download it but just panicking and looking for any type of reassurance as I won’t be able to download until later tonight. Thanks so much for your help btw
You have the same seed phrase, or private key or wallet file. That means your address is active, all your addresses are active and linked to your seed phrase, or private key. All you need is to never lost your seed phrase or private key to the addresses linked to it and the funds the addresses stored on blockchain will also be able to be accessed by you through seed phrase or private key.
7394  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum wallet help on: February 05, 2021, 08:51:48 PM
Do not update the electrum from any pop-up ad or something. You need to update to the latest version. 4.0.9. Then import your seed and see if your bitcoin will appear, but definitely it will appear.
7395  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / Re: Nigerian Bitcointalk Community Hangout. {Current topic: NIN & Local board} on: February 05, 2021, 08:43:00 PM
Looking well we all know that India is way better than our government , CBN banning crypto currency is a negative huge move to our society , but I don't even see any that the court would bdo about this ,our court is even controlled by our government , we should just hold our heads up and wait for 2023 , and we shouldn't forget p2p ,we really need it at this moment if we want to survive . But I know the will over turn the ban when BTC holders in high offices Begin to talk or questions them, we Sabi the matter now
Na the thing be that, the government controls everything in Naija, e go dey hard for now true true. The way you don talk ham true, we go hold on to people wey fit challenge CBN. E just dey pain me say I no dey the position for immediate action by suing CBN to court, but make we hope say this will be the next line of action. We don see how our government are incompetent and incapable to solve the problem wey dey start. If they fit think this way, I think the beginning of Naijas to dey suffer just started. I see Naija SEC have good intentions but CBN do not have such for cryptocurrencies. Make we see waiting go happen and make we hope positively.

This is what happened in India in 2018 happening now in Nigeria, but the India supreme court reversed the order in which the banks are still against it but unfavorable by the India supreme court which makes cryptocurrencies legal in India. I hope this will be the case for Nigeria too in the long run, the court will likely turned down the order, but I am thinking this may also be difficult until we have good leaders that do not just turn down something without no reason than filing criminal charges against it. The bank do not know the set back they already set for Nigeria today as they ban crypto. But, let us hope this ban will be invalid at the long run.
7397  Economy / Economics / Re: Nigerian Banks To Close Accounts Involved with Crypto on: February 05, 2021, 05:37:14 PM
It turns out that not only in Bangladesh, Nigerian banks also took part in rejecting the exchange of cryptocurrency, I think that despite this refusal, there are parties who do not like the presence of cryptocurrency in their country. How long will this continue, they should have realized that with the exchange of cryptocurrency, it would be a freedom to carry out transactions between countries. yeah I know any Nigerian bank or any bank, never felt open to cryptocurrency.
Nigeria has been a country with bad leadership from the onset, this is not surprising. When the largest Ponzi scheme that was carried out in South Africa turned out to be Ponzi, the South African government still looking for ways to regulate crypto not ban crypto, but Nigeria go for ban without any prior notice. I think Nigeria government still have internal agenda they do not disclose. The credit card monthly spending was reduced from over $5000 monthly to $100 monthly, this was because they are not producing enough goods for export and importing more, therefore inconvenienting Nigeria citizens, especially the average people that depends on such because the rich ones will see a way through. Now, that might be one of the reasons they ban crypto this time around but telling that it brings about criminality. Nigeria will also be Nigeria, the leaders will never think in the right direction, especially during this worst time ever Nigerians are especially since 2018.

I posted this on our local thread some hours ago, I thought it was fake news, but it is true as I read it from Punch.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5121680.msg56274188#msg56274188

This is becoming true, I have just checked punch, one of the most recognized news source in Nigeria.

https://punchng.com/cbn-orders-banks-to-close-crypto-currency-accounts/

Quote
The Central Bank has ordered banks and other financial institutions to identify persons and entities operating cryptocurrency exchanges and close all such accounts.

It stated that dealing with cryptocurrencies and facilitating payments through them are illegal in the country.

This was disclosed in a circular titled ‘Letter to all Deposit Money Banks, non-bank financial institutions and other financial institutions’ Friday.

The circular was signed by the Director of Banking Supervision, Bello Hassan; and the Director of Payments System Management Department.

It read, “The Central Bank of Nigeria circular of January 12, 2017 ref FPR/DIR/GEN/CIR/06/010 which cautioned the Deposit Money Banks, non-bank financial institutions, other financial institutions and members of the public on the risk associated with transactions in cryptocurrency refers.

“Further to earlier regulatory directives on the subject, the bank hereby wishes to remind regulated institutions that dealing with cryptocurrencies or facilitating payments for cryptocurrency exchanges is prohibited.

“Accordingly, all DMBs, NBFIs, and OFIs are directed to identify persons and/or entities transacting in or operating cryptocurrency exchanges within their systems and ensure that such accounts are closed immediately.

“Please, note that breaches of this directive will attract severe regulatory sanctions.
7399  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Funds lost in hardware wallet? on: February 05, 2021, 03:56:50 PM
Try to download electrum wallet in a safe computer and connect it to your hardware wallet, I do not know the type of ethereum wallet you use as the wallet extension, but electrum wallet will be better. Your funds are still likely on your wallet, the reason why the wallet do not recognized any transaction history means the wallet extension is the cause of the issue. Download electrum from electrum.org, verify the signature and connect it to your hardware wallet, your funds should appear.

This news is now circulating in Nigeria, one of my sisters sent it to me, and in less than 2 hours time Gozie51 also sent me the news.

Even, if Nigeria will ban crypto deposit or crypto generally, it should be circulating all over the news and we will see it coming, not ad libitum. Nothing of such in my side. Or, what do you people think is going on? This seems more fake.

I checked punch recently and found it to be true.
