744  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Low volume -- herd behavior? on: June 29, 2011, 06:22:17 PM
That's inherent in a system that's mostly limit orders - if the price isn't moving, trading stops.

What's really interesting is how many "buy" orders are outstanding on Mt. Gox. There are over a million dollars of limit orders displayed below the current price.  Each of those supposedly has a cash deposit behind it. Who's putting up all that cash? And why are they keeping it in Mt. Gox?

Does anyone have hard numbers on how many of the 61,000+ accounts compromised actually got reclaimed? I've heard estimates of 10 to 20 thousand. If so, 1,000,000/20,000 = $50 per user and 1,000,000/10,000 = $100 per user on average. Doesn't seem too outrageous to me...

Pool operator will take a 2% + 0.01 BTC transaction fee per deposit.

Why take 20x the cost of a transaction fee?

Because I forgot to upgrade my client on this computer  Grin

Fixing now, fee will be the new minimum of 0.0005 BTC

747  Economy / Gambling / [ENDED] Double Trouble 2x, 1.5x and 1.2x in the SAME POT! on: June 29, 2011, 05:42:04 PM
I've seen (and played in) so many variants of the classic "double trouble" pyramid-scheme game it's not even funny, 200% payouts, 150% payouts, 110% payouts. We're all aware that higher payout percentages result in a short game with few winners, while lower payout percentages result in a long game with many winners but I'd like to try an experiment. I want to see TOTAL CHAOS in a double trouble game. To that end I'm setting up an experimental game with three separate payment addresses: one for a 1.2x payout, one for a 1.5x payout and one for a 2x payout. All money sent to all three addresses goes to the same pot and payouts will be managed as normal for any double trouble game with the new twist that you have a choice of payout thresholds. Will your 2x bet end up after another 2x thus destroying your chances of winning or will it fall after an easily-satisfied 1.2x bet? Do you want a high chance of a low payout or do you want a low chance of a high payout?

Finally, 3% of all deposits will go to a special "jackpot" fund which will be payed to the very last depositor before time is up, sure to be a good return for some lucky bitcoiner.

Pool operator will take a 2% + 0.0005 BTC transaction fee per deposit. 3% of each deposit goes toward the jackpot fund, minimum deposit is 0.05 BTC, and as usual there is no maximum. Game will begin at approximately 19:00 UTC and will end at exactly 20:00 UTC. Just like a real pyramid scheme, anything left in the pot at the end of game is forfeit to the game operator. Deposit addresses for each tier as well as a link to the game spreadsheet and block explorer links will be posted at that time and will officially mark the moment when betting may begin. All deposits sent after the game closes will be returned to their respective owners minus the standard 0.01 BTC transaction fee (for the network, not for me).

Game ended with only one deposit, which will be refunded as a show of goodwill.

Me too! I PMed you about them a while back but somehow neglected to place an order. If you're going to do another run of these please please let me know, I'd LOVE to have a set.
749  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Metal Engraved Keypair Cards! Coming soon! on: June 28, 2011, 11:22:20 PM
I have to say the metal engraving is a nice touch, but wouldn't a laminated card (like a credit card) work just as well and be a lot cheaper?

I like these for the same reason we began our civilization with gold and silver currencies: durability. Metal engraved cards will work exactly the same as laminated cards, but will likely last much longer.

Other things I'd like to see along these lines:

  • Punch the QR code all the way through thus creating metal bitcoin punchcards, for maximum durability and a retro look/feel
  • QR codes engraved onto round metal blanks - actual bitCOINS
  • Bitcoin QR code jewelry?
  • Forget the card/bill/coin form factor (it's so 20th century), bleed the QR codes all the way to the edge and make tiny rectangular metal currency - I'm imagining gold-pressed latinum for some reason
  • For the incredibly wealthy, take my QR coin idea and do it with actual gold or silver - combining a physical AND digital commodity

The possibilities are endless!

751  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Cracked Passwords List Leaked, were you cracked? on: June 28, 2011, 10:52:57 PM
I'm on the list, but I figured I would be - it was medium-strength password at best. Of course I *never* kept a balance for any longer than it took to buy or sell, then I transferred immediately to my wallet or Dwolla where I did *not* use a medium-strength password.  Grin
752  Economy / Goods / Re: Organic Hemp Wick - Butane Lighter Alternative - Healthy and Tasty - Free Sample on: June 28, 2011, 08:06:02 PM
I hear ya, but I couldn't personally be bothered to use it for lighting cigs etc. Twice the effort.

I can see how it could be useful for hookahs and other things though.

There is a definite gap between the quality expectations of the average cigarette smoker and the average smoker of cigars, pipes, hookah, etc.

On the rather rare occasion that I smoke a cigarette, I don't bother with more than a butane lighter - there's simply no quality gains to be had and I don't smoke often enough to make it worth avoiding the occasional puff of butane. On the somewhat more common occasion that I'm smoking a cigar or pipe, I've always lit up with a wooden match, ensuring that all of the sulfur has burned off before touching match to tobacco. A hemp & beeswax wick is better quality still, but unfortunately for the OP I've already got one in my kit.

For a connoisseur of fine tobacco products, well worth it. For a pack-a-day cigarette smoker, not so much.

It's probably a dry heat though... Smiley

9% humidity. Feels GREAT as they're loading you in the back of the ambulance with heat stroke.

It's summer here in Las Vegas, NV and I get the feeling I'll be laughing at what most of you are calling "heat" wherever you're from. I've actually had to offload a couple nodes to the homes of friends and family to keep my apartment under 85F, it's pretty miserable really.
756  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: if i put a buy order in at $20...... on: June 28, 2011, 12:07:04 AM
There's a handy calculator on the Market Depth tab of the Mt Gox charts on bitcoincharts: http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/mtgoxUSD_depth.html

Just put in how many BTC you want and it'll show you how much you'd have to pay at current market prices for the whole lot, starting with the low prices and eating its way up.

758  Economy / Economics / Re: Namecoin prices plummeting - opinions? on: June 27, 2011, 11:18:35 PM
During their 41 conference in Singapore last week, ICANN approved the motion to allow new generic top level domains (gTLDs) to be registered with their organization. That means any 'established' company would be allowed to register .WAHATEVER domain name. If .bit gTLD is registered through ICANN how head-to-head collision with namecoin network will be resolved?

The easiest solution I can see is to simply become so large before this option is made available that others won't *want* to register a .bit address for fear of collisions. I'd imagine the TOR folks are having this problem too, since .onion won't be unique to the TOR network any more. It might be worth asking them how they're getting around it?

I own a pizza shop and I want to accept bitcoins but I'm still majorly concerned about how to keep my coins secure on windows.

Start by not using Windows. Smiley

It's posts like this that give Linux users a bad name. Just saying.
