761  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk Poker Series format discussion - Let's keep them all in one place. on: June 25, 2020, 09:13:10 PM
i'm in for sunday. like @Steamtyme said, maybe we can get a cash game or something going otherwise.

I did have a thought though on trying to increase traffic, at least in trying to bring over some of their regs. It centers around information on ho0w easy it is to get the password. For instance if someone clicks on the tournament something small about how they just need to register on the forum to get the password. That or "Check to get password" attached to the tournament title. There is a chance that because it is a password protected tournament with the lock symbol some users don't look at it. I'll be playing 2 tournaments tonight and will again encourage people to come play the series.

that's definitely part of it.

it's a tricky issue, being that we need to collect the additional buy-ins from players. i've discussed in the SwC chat a couple times and my impression is those regs just wanna register directly and play. you could give them the password and they would play just for the direct buy-in and prize pool, but i don't sense much interest in the series structure and additional buy-ins. we did manage to get @ceehe on board in the first series, but he mostly dropped out in the second.

Everything will be fine Smiley I have pimped the spreadsheet already to easier keep track of our lottery, so ready to go. I also added some flags, to show the internationality of our series. I might have missed some flags, since I don't know the nationality of all players or the country they live in. If your flag is missing and you want to have it added, just make a peep.

awesome job, looks great. nice touch with the flags. Smiley
762  Economy / Economics / Re: The Covid19 Curve is Flattening on: June 25, 2020, 08:58:59 PM
The question is this; what will happened to the global economy if there is a spike in the spread of covid19 again ?

some countries never flattened the curve. the USA never did. cases are now at record highs again and it obviously isn't just due to increased testing since hospitalizations are rising too.

the stock market just took a big shit, probably on fear that reopenings will be rolled back due to the worsening coronavirus problem. the phrase of the week seems to be "W-shaped recovery"---expectations are growing that there will be major stagnation after an initial boost in q3 from reopenings, and perhaps overall a longer, rockier recovery.

biden's poll numbers are rising fast---the market may be pricing that in too. there is some consensus that biden would roll back some of trump's tax cuts and business-friendly policies, which would adversely affect the stock market.
763  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: US Presidential Election 2020 on: June 25, 2020, 08:16:00 PM
not exactly---otherwise i'd be betting. most polls were hovering around 80% in favor of clinton on election day IIRC, with betting odds around 75%. we've still got a ways to go from there. betfair is still pricing biden at 57% to win.
Trump is on a better position today than what the sportsbooks offered on this month on 2016 hehehe. The sportsbooks might have learned from their mistake, however, I speculate the Democrats might be overconfident based on some of the news articles I have read.

the books don't price odds based on what they expect the outcome to be. they price them based on what punters are betting, so they make a small but reliable profit no matter the outcome.

it's the punters (and the pollsters) who seem to have learned from 2016. they aren't betting on a landslide---not yet at least.

trump down to 35%......below 30%, i start betting on him. https://odds.watch/trump-2020
764  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: "Poker Tournaments" are reopening little by little. on: June 25, 2020, 08:02:40 PM
why it seems that those other player are not wearing Mask?is this not obligatory for everyone inside casinos?

This must be taking action by the government because this literally against the rules of the government towards casino operators.

apparently it complies with social distancing requirements. las vegas initially limited tables to 4-max and most casinos are still sticking with that. by installing the dividers, the bellagio was approved for 6-max games and masks aren't required in the poker room. that's a pretty big draw for customers. americans hate masks.

the dividers are probably pretty effective and i assume they are sanitized whenever a player leaves, but i dunno for sure.
765  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Poker games that are providing free plays to earn real money on: June 25, 2020, 07:39:22 PM
I understand the desire to win free money, but 1,000 satoshis is the equivalent of literally pennies.... What's the point of wasting your time to win pennies?

Even the worst paid jobs pay far more, and you can often earn more simply from farming faucets all day if you absolutely had to.

Can somebody explain the draw here?

there's a certain satisfaction in building a bankroll from nothing. there's no risk involved. i've done it before---back in the day---from freerolls. i'll admit though, 1000 satoshis is way too small to pique my interest.

for some people, $1 may be a lot of money though.
766  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-06-23] PayPal Rumors Push Bitcoin Higher as On-Chain Transactions Surge on: June 25, 2020, 07:26:14 PM
@figmentofmyass. I speculate that Paypal might only follow what Neteller has done. They might create a cryptocoin brokerage service that cannot withdraw your funds in cryptocoins.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5157284.msg51567659#msg51567659

rumor has it that it will go further than that, with full wallet functionality and buy/sell capabilities:

Quote
“My understanding is that they are going to allow buys and sells of crypto directly from PayPal and Venmo,” a well-placed industry source told CoinDesk. “They are going to have some sort of a built-in wallet functionality so you can store it there.”

https://www.coindesk.com/paypal-venmo-to-roll-out-crypto-buying-and-selling

i think that makes sense---paypal would be leveraging their market share against competitor cash app, whose popularity is rising fast on the back of its bitcoin service.
767  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [25-6-20] Bitcoin.com Forum Closes on July 23 on: June 25, 2020, 12:04:27 AM
without any explanation from the admins or roger ver, the most popular theory circulating is that the forum is a time/money drain, and that they are consolidating to cut costs. https://www.reddit.com/r/btc/comments/hexwfl/the_bitcoincom_forum_is_closing_on_july_23rd_2020/

given roger ver's grudge against bitcointalk, i'm surprised he would give up his rival forum. tbh it seems sorta unlike him.
768  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Poker talk - Specifically Hold'em - Hands and or strategy on: June 24, 2020, 11:39:42 PM
2BB open seemed to be his standard. I've noticed that most people aren't varying their sizing at all. I was the same, but have picked a few different spots to vary it. ACR actually makes it more difficult for me because it will almost never let me type in 2.3BB for a betsize. You'll notice he did the same 2BB open in the next hand. I left this part out from the information to see if anyone would pick up on the seats. 1 orbit apart this guy flopped a set of Aces, and I was in a spot that put me in his crosshairs each time. Crazy.

i did get that impression but wasn't totally sure since somebody was added to the table on the second hand. it was one of the things (combined with the minraise from early position) that made me wonder if this was his standard open or the old "minraise with monsters to get callers" type thing. i've noticed some players still do this. my standard open is definitely bigger, especially from UTG or UTG+1.
769  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk Poker Series format discussion - Let's keep them all in one place. on: June 24, 2020, 10:56:37 PM
i hope we get an update soon! announcing the series last minute won't exactly boost turnout for the first qualifier. the sunday game (if it's being played) is less than 4 days out at this point.
770  Economy / Gambling / Re: 🚀 Sportsbet.io - Poker Today! 1BTC prizepool! Free Watford EPL shirt for entry on: June 24, 2020, 10:43:33 PM
i was seated at 2 tables before getting knocked out ~ 1.5 hours in. one had 7 sitouts and the other had 6.
If you want to play some nice poker game then this is a bad table , atleast in my view. If you want to increase your chances to win some money then I'd say this is a good table with 7 sitouts. I can project myself keep raising my chips to collect all those free chips from all those sit outs  Tongue

exactly---except if you are out of position (OOP) vs the active players. then you are at a great disadvantage since you constantly have to act first. dead money is nice but playing handicapped is not. Smiley

none of this matters all that much. it's a freeroll after all. i just find the whole thing mystifying tbh. i've never seen anything like this sitout phenomenon before on any other poker site. i don't understand why it happens.

if they are alt accounts intent on chip dumping, why are they sitting out? so many of these accounts just blind out to 0.
771  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: A Poker Odds Calculator is a Perfect Tool for Poker? on: June 24, 2020, 10:15:32 PM
I'm afraid it may not be applicable to poker. As a matter of fact, I don't even think this kind of odds calculator is reflecting your hand's real winning probability.

it definitely applies to poker. what that odds calculator is showing is the actual probability of winning at showdown---in other words, it assumes neither player folds and the hand plays through to the river.

when this hand is run thousands and thousands of times, it roughly boils down to a 60/40 flip every single time:

if you are consistently playing 60/40 favorites in a cash game setting, then you will profit over the long run.

If this tool would include in its winning probability calculation the cards of your opponents, the number of times your opponent is raising his/her bet, the amount raised, whether or not he/she is going all in, and so on, then it would be more or less sophisticated and kind of reliable.

yes, we also need to incorporate things like fold equity and pot odds and implied odds to get a better understanding of the complete set of probabilities at play.

but those types of odds are "next level" thinking. the most basic level to master first is showdown odds.

After all, back to the OP's image, the probability that one of your opponents is having a royal flush is there; the probability that one of your opponents is having a straight flush is there; the probability that one of your opponents is having a four-of-a-kind is also there. And what you have is only Full house.

or the probability one of your opponents is bluffing, chasing a weak draw, or has a weaker made hand. this brings us to another "next level" concept---playing against ranges of hands rather than one specific hand.

very seldom will you be able to read the exact hand your opponent is holding. usually you are playing against a range of possible hands, including the nuts, weaker made hands, draws, and pure bluffs.

a next level odds calculator i recommend is pokerstove: https://www.cardschat.com/poker-stove.php

it allows you to incorporate things like hand ranges, opponents with random hands, etc and is free.
772  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-06-23] PayPal Rumors Push Bitcoin Higher as On-Chain Transactions Surge on: June 24, 2020, 09:44:24 PM
PayPal getting involved in BTC at this point seems pretty unlikely given the KYC requirements.  While they no doubt do know their customers, the difference between PayPal and, say, Coinbase in the KYC requirements seems huge.  (I haven't had to register for either in quite some time so perhaps that has changed).
How huge was the difference during the time when you have registered? Also, how many users does Paypal presently have that has done KYC already?

i have a verified paypal account from years ago that i occasionally still use. i don't believe i've ever given them my SSN, address, scan of driver's license or selfie---which have become standard KYC on licensed/regulated platforms like coinbase and square cash app.

if the rumors are true, i bet they'll operate it as a segregated service where people who buy/sell crypto will be subjected to a higher level of KYC.
773  Economy / Gambling / Re: 🚀 Sportsbet.io - Poker Today! 1BTC prizepool! Free Watford EPL shirt for entry on: June 24, 2020, 09:32:49 PM
i was knocked out in 99th---flopped top pair and turned a flush, but then ran into a bigger flush. oh well, i knocked out one player. maybe it was the mystery bounty. Tongue

Well I do not mind those alts. You just need to hang on for a while with them before you get those serious players on the table. I understand Steve wants as many traffic as possible and I am with him in this.

the problem with all the sitouts is it creates a very obvious advantage for some players and a disadvantage for others. when there are only 2 active players at a table (as is often the case) then the player to the right is OOP 7 out of every 9 hands, whereas normal HU play means switching position every hand. that often leads to nonstop bullying from the player in position.

it's great when you're the one at an unfair advantage, or when you're at a table full of sitouts collecting blinds without ever playing a hand, but that isn't an ideal game of poker in my view. Smiley

i'm also not sure how all the sitouts help overall site traffic.

First break of the tourney and I don't see that many inactive players

i was seated at 2 tables before getting knocked out ~ 1.5 hours in. one had 7 sitouts and the other had 6.
774  Economy / Gambling / Re: 🚀 Sportsbet.io - Poker Today! 1BTC prizepool! Free Watford EPL shirt for entry on: June 24, 2020, 10:03:48 AM
no poker with steve tourney today? i just checked the lobby and it's not there.

What if a symbolic fee was charged for participation, say, 100 + 10 μBTC, or maybe even 50 + 5 μBTC? Thus, considering the prize pool, it would still be more like a free roll, but, at the same time, we would get rid of many unwanted participants.

yeah, doing it as a micro buy-in money added tourney rather than a freeroll would clean things up a lot. i'm all for it.

congrats on the deep run! Smiley

Hero shows [6h Ad]
Villain shows [Ah As]

ace-rag gonna ace-rag. off suit at that. Tongue

that early position 2x RFI smells like a big hand, no? or was this guy particularly active?

Villain-1 shows [Ah Ad]
Hero shows [6c 6d]

not much to say, tough beat. i'd have done the same.
776  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: A Poker Odds Calculator is a Perfect Tool for Poker? on: June 24, 2020, 09:34:07 AM
From the OP's image, your 59.4% winning probability vs. your opponents' 40.6% may not actually end up in your favor. You should never ever rely on it.

you can't rely on anything that is chance-based. i will say though, although 60/40 flips are high variance (you will win many and also lose many) they are profitable in the long run. in cash games you can get your chips in all day with those odds.
777  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: US Presidential Election 2020 on: June 24, 2020, 09:25:07 AM
In any case, the polls, the odds has suddenly made it become 2016 again where the Democrats were so certain that Hillary would win.

not exactly---otherwise i'd be betting. most polls were hovering around 80% in favor of clinton on election day IIRC, with betting odds around 75%. we've still got a ways to go from there. betfair is still pricing biden at 57% to win.
778  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: US Presidential Election 2020 on: June 23, 2020, 07:47:17 PM
trump 37%
biden 58%

https://odds.watch/trump-2020

we're getting there.....

My friend asked me if Bitcoin is left leaning or right leaning, I cannot answer that question since I am seeing a lot of non-Trump supporters out here on this thread - not sure it's just an observation.

trump in many ways is not a conservative, so you can't view opposition to him as strictly left vs right. lots of right leaning people think he doesn't serve conservative principles, and that he isn't a person of character.

he has also expressed disdain for bitcoin/cryptocurrency---apparently he even wanted to “go after bitcoin” in 2018, so that should have some effect on the views of bitcoin users. https://decrypt.co/32711/trump-first-wanted-to-go-after-bitcoin-in-2018-says-john-bolton

So I will ask your opinion on this question. Is cryptocurrency left leaning or right leaning?

fundamentally, neither.

bitcoin as an investment tends to appeal more to fiscal conservative types because it's so hard/scarce---the same reason there is overlap between gold bugs and right wing philosophies.

however, at its core bitcoin is still just another form of money. most left leaning philosophies don't seek to abolish money itself, and those that do tend to realize the necessity of money in the shorter term. the days where bitcoin users were mostly right leaning libertarians ended many years ago.

bitcoin also isn't the only cryptocurrency---most altcoins have much softer monetary policies. there are even ones that are more inflationary than major fiat currencies, so even the keynesians can take their pick of the lot.

I have the assumption that it is left leaning because of many anti-Trump supporting this but also right leaning because this is decentralization, which is not really what the left wants. Enlighten my friend please. Thank you.

decentralization =/= left or right. this is why libertarians and anarchists can't generally be defined as either. there are right libertarians and there are left libertarians.
779  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: "Poker Tournaments" are reopening little by little. on: June 23, 2020, 07:19:56 PM
Perhaps, the table itself will have a screener or plastic to border the players, and the players must wear a mask during the games.

the bellagio has done this, installing plexiglass dividers at the tables between players. this allowed them to increase table capacity to 6-max instead of 4-max, and they even removed the requirement to wear masks:

Checking all players before joining the table will be a must to make sure they are healthy, and they are not the carrier of the virus.

there are presymptomatic and asymptomatic people. also, the problem with temperature checking is that not everyone runs fevers at the same levels. my normal body temp during the day is close to 96 degrees, so if i'm at 98.6 it means i'm probably really sick, yet checking my temperature wouldn't reveal that. such a tricky thing, with so many people carrying the virus.....
780  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: A Poker Odds Calculator is a Perfect Tool for Poker? on: June 23, 2020, 07:01:48 PM
I really can't see myself sitting in a Casino and blurting out "Hang on people, I'll just check the odds of these two cards against the app in my pocket."

It *might* help you playing online, but I've seen Texas Hold Em can get pretty quick, so by the time you've entered details it's back to your turn again and everyone is waiting.

As an educational tool for someone starting out it could be ok, but people should familiarise themselves with the odds in play ahead of game day.

it's really not for use at the table---more so for reviewing hands afterwards.

when difficult spots come up, it's important to analyze them after the fact, determine your opponents' ranges, and run the odds so that you better understand where you stand next time.

once you get simple odds down (made hands, draws) then you can start incorporating things like pot odds, fold equity, ICM, etc to get a more complete view of the probabilities at play. poker is all about extracting value in EV+ situations when your opponents are gambling with bad odds.
