761  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why Doge coin is bad on: March 29, 2014, 06:44:30 AM
Probably been said before, but I'm going to put in my two cents here.

Because Dogecoin has such an active and large user base, it is highly successful.  I support a coin called Darkcoin because of it's excellent developer and incredible features and usefulness, but WE DON'T COME CLOSE TO DOGECOIN'S SUCCESS!!

Until we can do what Dogecoin has done, in some way, we will never, ever be as successful as Dogecoin.  I think what the Dogecoin community has achieved is amazing.  It has achieved one of the holy grails of crypto coins, and that's the user base.  Therefore, it has given the rest of us an idea of how to follow in their foot steps as well as what is possible.

I own no Dogecoins, so I have no personal interest in it.  But I do recognize brilliance in what a community can do, and dogecoin has done it and we at Darkcoin have discussed your success on several occasions, but unfortunately, we're just not as creative and wonderful a group as you are!

Please let me invite you over to our thread if you're so inclined as we could use your wonderful enthusiasm and energy!

You know why it's famous?

It's because it's named after a meme  Cool

A coin's community is it's most precious resource.  They have an amazing community.  Super active and involved.  Ignoring that is foolish in my opinion.  Who cares what brought them together, how the coin started out as a joke, they took it and ran with it.  The coin no longer belongs to the creator, he/she never saw this coming.  Once a coin is in the wild, it either lives or dies, this one lived and I don't see it dyeing any time soon.
762  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: March 29, 2014, 06:10:01 AM
How many algos are even needed ? You can actually remove some in Quark and SRC and all their clones and still submit 100 perfect shares at a faster hash rate.
as i found out optimizing the hashing algo's this coin is cloned from lol
and guys have been optimizing them such as Unclebob and Neklizar and other guys.. some knowledge about what goes on in the scene would help guys lol

you know what since VTC has dropped so hard in price and become flooded with new miners and has been out for ages (December) and yet is STILL more profitable (almost 3x)
i should mine some VTC or what ever else and simply BUY Dark coins if i am doing it "because they will be sooooo much more evaluable later" LOL
Which i am not Wink

lets here your response to that lol

The reason for all the algos is to make it as asic resistant as possible.  It's trying to buy time for a smoother growth transition.  If we were to have started off with script, we would have been 6 months old before ASICs hit the scene, and it would have just been a huge dump of mining power all of a sudden.

The idea is the more algorithms, the harder, more involved it is to make the ASIC.  That plus having a new algorithm also slows down the adaption.  There needs to be a critical mass of users before making an ASIC is profitable.

You ask good questions.  It's hard to see why Evan has done all the things he has done from first glance but he did have his reasons, though I'm sure not all of them turned out the way he had hoped Smiley

I do agree with you on finding the most profitable coin to mine.  Being that I just mine here due to laziness and to support the network, I really don't know how we hold up against other coins.  However, I do understand our hash rate is about 2.5 x higher with X11 and the difficulty is also about 2.5 times as high as script, so these numbers according to what other people say, make mining darkcoin comparable to script.  But like  I said, I don't know.

RE: First anonymous coin?  Where is there another, actually functioning anonymous coin?  Ours is still in closed source beta but it's working, you can download it and use it right now.  I know of no other coin that has a decentralized trustless solution like DarkSend.  Not that isn't still in the planning stages, and certainly not one that is as practical, lightweight and effective.

This coin has over 10,000 lines of new code.  Even when Darksend is open sourced, it's so interwoven into the wallet, it will take someone of skill to extract it and implement it into their own wallet.

You should take a little time to read the white paper linked on the first page.
763  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: March 29, 2014, 05:49:09 AM
Spoetnik, I really don't think this coin is profitable to mine if you want immediate rewards.  I think the reason so many people are mining, which is terrific, is because they believe the coin will be very valuable once DarkSend is completed, and many of us are excited to see what Evan comes up with next.  We see a lot of future development in this coin happening, Evan has dedicated himself to it, and we've seen how fast he can come up with solutions.  The beta versions of DarkSend are working really well, but he wants to improve it, make it better, so it's taking longer than it absolutely had to I'm sure, but then again, I know he's making it really awesome.

So that's probably the reason people are mining it even so the prices aren't reflecting the difficulty. I absolutely love the idea of having my wallet be as private as possible.  Personal finances are something that I feel we have a right to keep private.

Gosh, see? we're still missing the Gpu miner links on the front page, the guys are so busy!  But there is a link to mining hardware for Darkcoin, which is all about Gpu's so it isn't hare to figure out there must be a GPU miner for the coin.  In fact, people ask about it all the time, and they get a link pretty fast usually.  I'll ask Ape again to put it on page one...

Oh one more thing, a page or so back, eduffield (Evan) said they'd start posting announcements on our forum;

https://www.darkcointalk.org/forums/official-developer-thread.15/

And they've begun to do so!  I think we're slowly trying to migrate to that forum  Grin

ya i figured that and i will prob mine it a bit..i have a few idle cpu's i can use the fastest being my desktop Intel core i7 4770k
although i don't see too much of a future for the coin to be honest.. any so called new features here are not enough for an impact i think.
and i highly suggest the OP put a link to GPU miners on page one for credibility reasons alone.
Otherwise it looks like the coin is being pushed as a cpu only coin when it's not like on that CPU only coins list topic.

and i don't pay for electricity so whether it uses less or not i couldn't care less lol
watching my CPU cores i see only partial usage too so that may explain the lower usage..
on average they are using 80% of my cores / threads i am testing 6 threads out of 8 leaving two idle for support for cgminer
and i am seeing between 65 and 87% fluctuating.. so maybe scrypt miners are simply coded to be more efficient ? accident ? lol

Yes, I think we need someone to take the torch and optimize more of the algorithms in the miners.  Not being a programmer, I'm assuming that the 11 algorithms are only partially optimized.

And yah well, we think privacy is really important, so I guess it's worth it for us Smiley

Anyone mining with a R9 270 or R9 270X? What are your configs and MH/s?

getting 1.3 on an msi 270x with:

--thread-concurrency 16768 -I 18 --temp-cutoff 83 -g 2 --gpu-engine 1175 --gpu-memclock 1500

runs about 14c cooler than 450khash scrypt mining to boot.

my msi 270x use this conf got too much hw,why?

This coin runs better on lower intensity.  Try -I 14 and work your way up.  I doubt you'll go over 16 before you start getting HW errors Smiley
765  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: COIN which you are finding with the most innovative code? on: March 29, 2014, 05:38:35 AM
Huntercoin

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=435170.0

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntercoin

For a truckload of reasons.

Most coins use a new algo or some combination of POS/POW/whatever. Check out Huntercoin. It's the first massively multiplayer online cryptocurrency game.

From another thread:

A few people have mentioned it, but once again:

Mid-boss: Huntercoin (HUC)

Huntercoin is:

1) The first Namecoin fork
2) The ONLY Namecoin fork
3) Parallel SHA-256 & scrypt merged mined
4) The first & only massively multiplayer online cryptocurrency GAME!
5) Has multiple developers supporting it
6) Has clear and obvious value beyond being a currency
7) Is by far the most innovative coin to come out in forever + a day
Cool Has multiple 3rd party developers behind it

No other coin comes remotely close to what Huntercoin has achieved, and it's just getting started. (Perhaps a few with massive funding/support might be considered, e.g. Ethereum.)

Download the Huntercoin source code and have a look. HUC is one to keep your eye on closely if you're not already buying some up, or playing it! Cheesy

Oh, that is an interesting concept.  Is the game functional yet?  I'll have to check it out Smiley  Probably not my cup of tea, but certainly innovative.  It's amazing the kind of function people come up with for this technology Smiley

767  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why I say X11 and SHA3 are not ASIC resistent ? on: March 29, 2014, 05:10:55 AM
I saw many altcoins say they are ASIC resistant because of X11 and SHA3. First time, I saw this statement, I decided to keep quite a while, because I think no one will believe that, turn out I saw much topics that claim X11 and SHA3 are algorithm for ASIC resistant. I think before this believes go wire spread more than the current situation, I need to do something. To let people know, what they are believe is TOTALLY wrong......WHY ?

X11 and SHA3 ( Keccak ) are not ASIC resistant at ALL, according to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), if an algorithm wants to become SHA3 candidate during that time; one thing that algorithm must have is it need to be able to create by ASIC. AND every algorithm in X11 used to be SHA3 candidate until Keccak wins the competition and become SHA3.

Reference paper : http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/ST/hash/sha-3/Round2/Aug2010/documents/papers/SCHAUMONT_SHA3.pdf

I hope, this is the topic will help someone who got misunderstanding that X11 and SHA3 are ASIC resistant change they believe before it will repeat step Bitcoin.

Here is the reponse from Darkcoin dev

X11 and SHA3 ( Keccak ) are not ASIC resistant at all, according to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), if you want to become SHA3 candidate, you need to be able to create by ASIC. The whole point of X11 is to try and get the same network growth cycle as Bitcoin. Once Darkcoin is worth enough, people will invest the capital to create the ASICs. I never really had an issue with that, in fact that was the point of creating a new hashing algorithm, I think it will be healthy in the end to move to ASICs.

Dear, they are called ASIC resistant not proof.  It would be a total pita to make an ASIC for X-11, though it can and will be done when the market pressures are high enough.  What Evan was attempting to do was to give Darkcoin a few years, if possible, of ASIC free mining.  Only time will tell if he gets that many years.

Oops, I just realized you quoted Evan.  I guess I'm not quite understanding your point.  But ok, all's well Smiley
768  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: COIN which you are finding with the most innovative code? on: March 29, 2014, 04:57:18 AM
Wow, another opportunity to tell someone about Darkcoin;
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=421615.0

Darkcoin has a full time developer named Evan Duffield (eduffield) who has already put so many innovations in the coin, it's far above and beyond any other coin.

1.  new algorithm to keep ASICs at bay, X-11.  other coins have already copied this algorithm, as soon as 1 day after Darkcoin's launch!

2.  New way to calculate rewards based on difficulty, a version of Moore's law 2222222/(((Difficulty+2600)/9)^2)

3.  When KGW was found to have an Achilles heel with a time warp exploit, Evan came up with his own Difficulty Retargeting solution and called it Dark Gravity Wave, DGW, and it follows the difficulty changes like  glove, it's amazing.

4. And the real reason for Darkcoin's existence is DarkSend.  DarkSend is the technology behind Darkcoin's anonymous transaction features.  They are implemented inside the wallet in a decentralized, trustless solution.  We are currently in Beta 5 (actually skipped Beta 4) and it's running on the main net.  You can find the white paper at the above link.

What is really great is that Darkcoin is way undervalued still, we have no idea why?  But it's currently been slowly creeping up in value, so it's a great time to purchase Darkcoin as part of your portfolio.  We have practically no history of pumping and dumping (except for a rather long story in the beginning where someone got ahold of bitcoin that didn't belong to them on C-CEX, bought up all the Darkcoin they could with it, then transferred it to Cryptsie where they sold all the dark coin off in a huge dump.  This is where you'll see a very strange peak and valley in, I think it was, early February)

This is a serious coin, we know we have a good thing, but we have not been good at getting the word out.  I feel awkward writing all this, but I've decided that I have to do my part to spread the word.  Even a brilliant coin is nothing without a community, and we've been a quiet bunch who don't seem to want to stick our heads outside the forum just to have it chopped off by Blue Meanies! LOL.

I myself have bought a bunch of this coin about 2 weeks ago at above 0.0016 btc a couple of weeks ago, it's currently trading around 0.00142 or so, so I can tell you it's still an excellent time to invest.  DarkSend will soon be out of beta and when it is, we expect things will quickly change.

There you have it.  I only want to deliver information, maybe with a little of my own opinion.   I honestly believe in this coin, and hope I come across as a person delivering information and not hype.  If you've read this, I thank you for doing so, and hope you will join us Smiley

I forgot one fact, Evan has added over 10,000 lines of code to the 'ol bitcoin wallet/system.  When Darksend is released, it will be open source but people will not be able to easily just implement the code in their coin, it will take someone with a lot of skill to do so .
769  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ** UNDERRATED ALT-COINS ** on: March 29, 2014, 04:31:59 AM
I'm glad I just saw this thread.  I get to hopefully reach some people.  Though others have already said so, I'm going to tell you why Darkcoin is extremely underrated.

Evan Duffield (eduffield), a full time dedicated developer for Darkcoin crated a coin that has so many new, useful features, they've already been copied in other coins.  He has two people helping him directly that I know of, Internet Ape and LimLims.

Evan first wanted to create a coin with a smooth reduction in rewards, so he used a version of Moore's Law.  It may not have worked out exactly the way he planned at first, but he quickly made adjustments and got it running smooth super quickly and has responded to issues so quickly, it's amazing.

First, a whale hit our coin, it drove the difficulty up really high, so Evan implemented KGW, but then there was a time warp issue discovered with KGW, so Evan whipped up a better difficulty algorithm that he called Dark Gravity Wave, which is super responsive to the difficulty swings are coin sees on a daily basis.

Next, a exploit was discovered in stratum, where people could set their difficulty to practically nothing, and send in useless shares, but get credit for them, thereby effectively stealing shares from all the miners in a pool.  If you recall your pools fixing this, the solution came first from our Evan Duffield who quickly shared it with the rest of the community.

Another thing, Evan created this coin with a new set of algorithms.  Like quark, he combined a long list of crypto algorithms to keep Asics at bay.  He called it X-11 for the 11 algorithms he included.

But the REAL reason for Darkcoin's existence is DarkSend.  Evan came up with a new implementation of CoinJoin to make transactions seamlessly anonymous from the wallet.  It is an entirely decentralized solution to keep your finances private.  We are currently on Beta v4, but he accidently called it Beta V5, LOL, he's like the absent minded professor.

We are almost there!

And what about the future?  Evan is open to our suggestions, and users have come up with some fantastic ideas.  Evan has already hinted that he 'solved' something he'd been working on, and that it's going to be a surprise.  So we're all excited to learn what it is.

So What do YOU need to know?

First, you may be interested to know that mining X-11 runs far cooler than script, up to 45%, possibly more, cooler.  It also uses correspondingly less energy.  With summer coming, it'll help your room stay cooler and the fans are way quieter!

Second, many of us believe that Darkcoin is very undervalued.  In fact, the hash rate is quite high yet the price is still low.  Why are people mining if it's so difficult?  Because we all believe this coin is special and 1. want to support the network and 2. think it will ultimately bring in way more money in the near future.  So it's a great time to buy Darkcoin, it's far from being too late to dive in!  We've been holding steady at a low price for a long time now, and the price is just starting to creep up, but I've still bought darkcoin at a higher price than it is now, and I'm not worried.

Third, the hash rate of Darkcoin is 2.5 - 3 X that of script, and the difficulty is as well.  So don't let the numbers freak you out too much, as it's different from script.  You'll get higher numbers with X-11.

Finally, I really like the people on our thread, so I dare say you will too.  They're a great bunch, and we have a lot of fun over there.  I hope you'll come visit us and dig into the thread a bit to see what we're all about Smiley

I just got my kill-a-watt that I ordered to play with. I plugged my rig into it, turned it on, and let it idle at the desktop for a while. The idle wattage was bouncing between 105 and 120 watts. I then started up the cpu miner, on an i5 4670k @ 4.5 GHz, and it ran at 182 watts. I then fired up sgminer on my 270x's, an asus dc2-270x and a sapphire dual-x or something like that, and it only went up to 330 watts. That seems a little too good to be true doesn't it? Only 148 watts to run two 270x's? I then ran a scrypt coin just to see what wattage it would pull and it went up to 490. I just wanted to say, X11 is great  Cheesy I'm using even less energy than I thought! Though I have a feeling I'm not using the meter right for some reason  Shocked

No, you are using it alright Smiley I wrote a few pages back about that. I also got like 45% - 50% less wattage. I hope dev reads this and can correct this on the front page. And this "less wattage" information is even worth putting in the title (like it was before)

Aw heck, I misspelled Clyde!  Oh well they're only cows....right?  LOL

while understanding the code, can someone please explain what is this...

   int64 nSubsidy = 0;
    if(nHeight >= 5465) {
        if((nHeight >= 17000 && dDiff > 75) || nHeight >= 24000) { // GPU/ASIC difficulty calc
            // 2222222/(((x+2600)/9)^2)
            nSubsidy = (2222222.0 / (pow((dDiff+2600.0)/9.0,2.0)));
            if (nSubsidy > 25) nSubsidy = 25;
            if (nSubsidy < 5) nSubsidy = 5;
        } else { // CPU mining calc
            nSubsidy = (11111.0 / (pow((dDiff+51.0)/6.0,2.0)));
            if (nSubsidy > 500) nSubsidy = 500;
            if (nSubsidy < 25) nSubsidy = 25;
        }
    } else {
        nSubsidy = (1111.0 / (pow((dDiff+1.0),2.0)));
        if (nSubsidy > 500) nSubsidy = 500;
        if (nSubsidy < 1) nSubsidy = 1;
    }

& how does it work.

I am not a programmer, but I believe nHeight is block number, Diff is the difficulty, 2222222/(((x+2600)/9)^2) this is the calculation with x= difficulty, that sets the payout and that's about all I can say, LOL

And I believe nSubsidy is the amount paid out for the block.

So I believe this is the section of code that calculates payout amounts

Couldn't agree more. Technology and innovation has made our world smaller and done away with so many barriers. We here could be playing an ever so small role in making the world better by offering a superior aternative to fiat. But this alt world seems plagued by swindlers and opportunists. I'm hoping beyond hope that Darkcoin can break through, not just as an investment but for a better way of commerce. Kind of idealistic I know. But I try to keep it to a minimum.

The alt world is a veritable minefield. Every week is a new controversy over some theft or scam. Can we set up an official place where new alt investors can come to get legit help. Kind of the ABC's of what to do to get started safely and securely. One stop shopping for all potential Darkcoin needs. How to mine. Where to trade. Updates on exchanges that are not safe. Everything about wallets. How to keep your DRK stored safely. At present it's so scattered. And if it was also translated in several languages. Well organized and easy to navigate. If this could happen I would want to help make it reality. And it would reduce the barriers to entry for thousands who are skeptical of dipping into an unknown.

I apologize if this is already been talked about, if it has I am unaware. This is IMO far more pressing than any marketing. It's a service that the non cryptocurrency world is desperately needing. And Darkcoin could accomplish it and enter the mainstream as a positive leader and not just for nefarious underground technogeeks.

A lot of that is already written about at the other forum, http://www.darkcointalk.org Smiley  It's growing with quite a few tutorials.  we might need to make a separate section just for tutorials perhaps Smiley

Welcome!  Although most alts will indeed die, I'm starting to think an awful lot will actually survive.  Moreso than most people used to suggest.  "there will be 3-6 that will eventually survive" used to be the wisdom of the day, but now I'm not so sure!  It's the community that makes the coin more so than anything else.  It's going to be a very interesting decade!  LOL

Cheesy  Grin  Cheesy

I'm old enough to really remember life before the internet, when we didn't know what was "behind the iron curtain" and calling / seeing relatives from across the country or across the Atlantic was a huge deal.  The internet has changed that in such a way, you young people can never ever comprehend!  I can see and talk to my family in Germany any time using Skype.  We don't have to worry about how much it costs or anything, just the time zone!  It still amazes me.  Now I can go to Google translate and translate something for someone in China, and they can read it and know I MAKE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE!  But they know I'm trying, and they do the same for me, and we get to talk like friends.

What a truly wonderful world.  Anyone who thinks technology is bad has never been touched by another from a far away place, yet so like our own back yard.

How can there be war when life is so wonderful.... oh yah, those politicians.... ugh!
