761  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Darkcoin - Will it rise again? on: August 24, 2014, 06:15:11 PM
its now giving way to a real anonymous coin (cryptonote-based) XMR/Monero.

xmr's block chain is being tested by a bloat attacker. lets hope it gets the tx fees up to slow down the attack.

DRK is still in RC stage, so its still not yet seen its fate one way or the other.

However, I was taken back by the announcement to have an alternative to TOR running through their master nodes. that is interesting. if they can pull it off, they can use the darkcoins as a source of payment and that would bring new money into all crypto, even Bitcoin. it would also create demand for their currency.

Let me know when Bitcoin 3.0 is announced. lol
763  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Comparing Anonymous Coins on: August 23, 2014, 09:34:23 AM
only bother with Darkcoin and Monero (which is not yet ready for normal guys and girls)

i got a bunch of stuff to see what happens. but only these two atm are transaction ready.

how is kristov doing?

report ETA? that's all I'm waiting for in order to press the big button.
765  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | RC4 Testing on: August 11, 2014, 08:15:25 PM
What is your estimation to the new price range after a successful release?

not necessarily that RC4 will have an impact on the price short term, in fact a slight drop wont be surprising, I know that most people wont agree (I hope I am wrong)....before you tell me "but the price skyrocketed when RC3 was released" yes true, the price skyrocketed but not because of RC3 but because of a whale investing a shit load of BTC in DRK....

The price doesn't matter in the short term.  What matters that is there are no critical bugs in RC4 and that users can finally send coins anonymously.  Adoption and actual use of the coin begins at this point.

As long as update goes smooth , price change will happen accordingly and no need to worry about that.

RC4, means it is not deemed 100% ready for mass adoption. Final release, that is when things start to rock.

The price should go up 25%-100% on RC4. 200%-1,000% on Final release with Kristov review.

I've hedged a few bets and while I was on the sidelines, I'm now invested thanks to the noobs who are selling so cheaply.

My prediction is a lot of folk here are getting their salaries processed as we type, and will rush to take advantage of this price to stock up. Price right now is clear reflexion of inter-coin "arbitrage". Early next week, engines will be seriously on.

You people never learn, should have bought when it was below .008, not stock up after big erection pump  Tongue

I'm happy with a double or triple in value. Can't be too greedy. Anyway, at this level of interest in the new tech it looks like a long position should be taken
767  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | RC4 Testing on: July 31, 2014, 06:26:54 PM
No seriously, why would anyone need to hide their IP address from their financial transactions?
Because we want to be... anonymous.
Total annonimity.
But if it's so important, why doesn't Litecoin hide IP addresses of people that use Litecoin?
I see what you're doing there...

Seriously, trolls just hurt every coin out there. Scams, yes we need to point them out. Trolling just undermines potentially good projects, especially anon projects and the more of the them with quality devs the better as far as I'm concerned.
768  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Operation Shitcoin Cleanout and Clean Up Has Begun- Join the Revolution- Updated on: July 31, 2014, 06:21:52 PM
Isn't Spoetnik that huge BC guy?
like the same BC that was one of the most epic pump and dump scamcoins of all time?

Spoetnik definitely had a few choice words for me a week or so ago when I pointed out the irony of his saber-rattling about shitcoins while wearing a signature about some kinda "jackpotcoins".  I don't know if he's a pump-n-dump scammer but I'm like sed, I want to see an overview of "mission accomplished" from these dudes.  Following this thread so far it just seems like chest-thumping.
I skimmed a few pages, seems like most of the famous shitcoin developers actually post in this thread at some point or another.
this thread can be summed up quite easily as: disinformation

i've posted before how i think the whole altcoin scene went to shit a few monthes ago when BC was pumped so hard and made a bunch of grifters enough money to finance the next rounds of their scams. you can tell how closely connected lots of these coins are even.  You can see the progression of their scamcoins too (from BC they then started liking coins with a lower total quantity of coins, then they tried using multipool's and subsidizing miners with imaginary rewards (mining hardware, titans etc)
blackcoin, cinni, cai/caix, then they convinced the XC developer to limit the total number of coins to 10% of what it was supposed to be originally (because they only like to pump coins that they own a majority of).
i fell out with them after that point, but i'm sure they're doing most of the coins currently being pumped. i wouldn't be surprised to find their finger in stealth, key, cloak, etc.  any of the coins that are really pushing the same features they had rynom working on for Cinni are most likely their coins, i think

interesting.

what is the source please?

An end note from a reformed former political junkie: if you can sell Monero to big corporations on that basis, you will have influential "friends in court" to fend off any Drug-War-style crackdown on anonymous currencies by TPTB. Of course, that means you gotta schmooze them - perhaps through hitting it off with their kids...
Its easier than you might think.  They want it already and are just waiting for the solution.
Multinational Corporations have come to me looking to answer this problem.  Some are already doing it.
Monero is still too immature, not enough liquidity yet, and the MNC decision cycles are not short, but if CryptoNote continues on the current path, it is the best contender yet for new entrants from that constituency.

Most likely it's easier than I think because I'm stuck in my parents' basement.  Cheesy

But thanks for your dispatch from the outside world: we need more of them. There's so much 'FckBks' lingo around here, and so easy to get sucked into it, we-all need first-person heads-up reports like yours from time to time. Again, thanks for it.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you get around the PR-unfriendly cloud that's hanging over Bitcoin right now?

There's no getting around the PR-cloud.  That's part of why the users of the first CryptoNote coin kept it quiet.
The MNCs have departments that do exploratory work with disruptive technologies.
Monero is still too immature for use, and likely will be for a good while yet, but the questions are being asked.

When disruption occurs, they all want to be on the side of the disruption that wins.

The banks are a different story though, many are under the thumb of a central bank that is not fond of decentralization, only talked to a couple of those and the people in the disruptive research group are not optimistic about and real involvement, but most multinationals aren't banks.  Manufacturing, shipping, communication, distribution companies, franchises.

There were a couple banks that have made appearances at Bitcoin events for exploratory research purposes.  The 500startups bitcoin gathering in SF a few months back had a few from UK even.

what does that mean exactly - who (if they are known or kinda known) are you talking about?
770  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Babies cry FUD.. what next gonna call me a Troll now too ? on: July 29, 2014, 10:45:21 PM
Monero is just the P&D of the week/month (not sure yet.)

A few things concerned me about how the transactions are mixed.

So A sends money to C, but it used ABC & D to send to C.  Seems like a good way for B & D to get in the middle of some shit they really don't want to be involved with... right? (or at least along those lines)

It would be horribly embarrassing for the FBI to come talk to you/family/friends about a kiddie porn payment when you were just holding a crypto-note.

That's not how ring signatures work.

In order for the FBI to come talk to the other parties in the ring group, they would need to completely compromise all parties. This is, of course, unlikely to the point of being impossible.

An analogy is like you being at a coffee shop using the wifi, along with a bunch of other people. Someone in the group does something illegal, and the FBI find out about it. They know there was a group of people, and that it was one of the group, and that's it. They have no video camera footage they can use to identify the participants, just the knowledge of the number of participants.

I'll try to find the image that was presented to me with arrows and I'll edit this post to respond to you.

Edit:

What if two of the individuals are involved and paying each other for kiddie porn... wouldn't the FBI just say fuck all this mixing noise and just talk to everyone?

Do the people on that list know that they are involved with each other or is it just the system?

its so obvious, buy only when its pointed out to you.
thanks

R.I.P. DRK

Start calling me FUD again, but DRK has been moving lower and lower...

I'm just sitting here waiting for that RC4, then I'll put up the buy orders. I guess, there are many of us doing the same thing, while the Litecoin multipools keep unloading darkcoins waiting for us to buy them.
772  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | RC4 Testing on: July 27, 2014, 09:17:01 PM
Oh no. Maybe it needs to be posted elsewhere Mr. President.

Last time this happened, it brought the wrath of an entire sect onto Darkcoin thread Sad We don't need it.

Ah.. deleted..

Thanks El Presidente for deleting the post that had evidence identifying the fundamental problems with Cloak.

Totally forgot about this. Was this ever posted anywhere else?

Not usually my thing, but it looked very suspect. it should be investigated, if only to rule it out as an error in the analysis.

Cloak possibly have a man in the middle problem with their network?

if we want to get rid of shitcoins we need to eliminate shitpeople.

shitpeople are the ones making the shitcoins.

they created the shitblizzard and its fault the winds of shit are blowing in their direction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srq_MbsUTuM

convince people to stop buying the shitcoins and the shitdevs will leave.

Get rid of coinmarketcrap, or only create a place for 20 coins.

2) Bloat - currently anyone that wanted to spend a few BTC and has mid level developer skills could bring MRO to a grinding halt today. Simply increasing transactions four times combined with doubling the hash rate, something that will definitely happen with increased adoption will bring the chain to a halt. Do the math, in one year you will be looking at at a theoretical 75-100GB block chain. A solution needs to be implemented. Several are discussed on this forum over the past years.

You're doing the math wrong. The current rate of blockchain growth of about 6 MB per day (see below). Increase the transactions 4x and that goes to 24 MB per day or 8.7 GB per year, not 75-100 GB.

Increasing the hash rate has no meaningful effect on the blockchain size.

Blockchain size (the on-disk storage usage is somewhat larger, but that is being optimized):
http://monerochain.info/charts/bcsize

I can get a calculator out, so what happens if transactions go to 10x or 100x? That's what you want right? Success = more transactions.  So what are we talking about here 9 GB / yr, 90 GB /yr or 900 GB / yr? If its anything north of 20 GB / yr then that is a rate limiting factor for growth, is it not?

Help me out here, I have quite a few xmr coins and this does make me nervous.

I recently bought about the cheapest computer I could find.  It has a 500GB HD.  Today including the Monero blockchain I'm using 8% of it's capacity.  At 20GB/yr that's 20 years before it fills up.  HDs are now in terabytes so in 20 years I guess they'll be petabytes or exabytes.

I really don't know much so maybe I'm missing something.

nioc, aka The Drooling Masses®

well we also have to think about places in the world that have poor internet infrastructures and global issues on download restrictions, let alone affordability on hardware.

This is not a trivial issue, IMO.  There are growth restrictions, but that is ok as long as we know that is the case.

Let's get back on track with some constructive discussion, someone asked about the timing of the new algo etc.. based on this link: https://vertcoin.org/pow-algorithm-upgrade-lyra2/ , order of events would be:

"There is still much work to be done before we roll it out. Here is a approximate timeline:

1. Derive appropriate initial memory and cpu levels to roughly match the current level (8/15/2014)
2. Implement the new algo in all the wallets including mobile (10/15/2014)
3. Run final testing on testnet (11/15/2014)
4. Final release to mainnet (11/30/2014)

- These are estimates, we may move faster -"

I hope this helps

so by the end of the year, right? that sounds reasonable. the price might drift downwards over this period, but lets see what we can do to buy some of those up  Wink

I myself was a darkcoin fanatic. I deeply despised altcoins that were threatening to darkcoin. I know, that many current fanboys for other coins, feel threatened by monero., as I did. That's probably why they messaged BCX about monero. However, I am not like them, I still keep up darkcoin and still hold a very sizable amount, I've also looked into every other altcoin proposing anonymity. I truthfully, have to say, that out of all the anon coins out there, Monero beats them all, in design, features, and development team.

any others?
778  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Operation Shitcoin Cleanout and Clean Up Has Begun- Join the Revolution- Updated on: July 26, 2014, 12:09:01 PM
I wrote some similar concerns about Monero (Cryptonote) and also what I like and don't like about various coins. You can start at this post and read forward to the end of the page, wherein I get into the blockchain bloat issue.

I've read your various posts. Mostly interesting stuff.

You seem to know a lot, about a lot, without actually liking a lot. Why do you do crypto at all, when you clearly prefer cash?

Did anyone tell about the MultiGateWay of Nxt ?

http://bitcoinist.net/multigateway-new-decentralized-exchange/
http://multigateway.com/
http://multigateway.com/user-guide/installing-the-software/
https://nxtforum.org/multigateway-jl777/
https://nxtforum.org/umgwc/
https://nxtforum.org/umgwc/umgw-ui-release-v1-3e/

It's working, I am using it.
Basically you can trade Nxt for Bitcoin or Litecoin, soon Darkcoin (I know fuck that coin) and more crypto soon.

It is a decentralized exchange that you use from the Nxt client.
All transactions are based on the Nxt blockchain. No cheat, no theft, no scam, ...

Isn't it what cryptocurrencies always needed ?

how can xmr be traded with this?
780  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Vertcoin - First Scrypt N | First Stealth Address - Privacy without mixer on: July 25, 2014, 07:24:57 PM
Very few coins actually have devs that know what they are doing. These guys know what they are doing, they just need to figure out the best direction, then work can start.

I'm of the same opinion. Very few coins have devs that know what they're doing. Do you think that perhaps we should start an independent thread one of these days with a list on the OP?

. . . not that it would be easy by any means - opinions without factual events, incidents, interchanges, etc., that serve to justify those opinion are meaningless . . .

It might be worth it though as it could become one of the most entertaining and interesting reads on BitCoin Forum. Wink
