Holy necromancy!
7642  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Difficulty increase - 60% on: May 18, 2011, 11:02:20 PM
yeah with 1.2 g/hash mining speed i can only get 4.5 coins per day @ 6.5 usd per coin,  29 dollars a day is not really worth it anymore

you already own the hardware I'm guessing. Is $29 dollars/day still not more than the electricity costs? why would it not be worth it any more.

excuse me if I'm missing some sarcasm. can't tell either way.
Hey, don't try to convince him otherwise... the fewer people mining, the more bitcoins for the rest of us.  Smiley
7643  Economy / Economics / Re: Can someone please explain to me WHY I should accept BTC over gold or silver? on: May 18, 2011, 10:19:47 PM
Because you can send it instantly over the interwebz?  Because you can store all your wealth on the back of a stamp?  Because it isn't practical to pay someone $1 or $0.50 worth of gold, but you can pay bitcoins in any fraction you like.

That's all I can think of.  Smiley  But mostly being able to send it online and anonymously.
7644  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Buying a videocard. on: May 18, 2011, 10:12:09 PM
Definitely the 5830.  By far the best value for that pricerange.  I just picked up 3 of them myself, as all of the reasonably priced 5850's were backordered and 5870's are nearly non-existant at this point.
7645  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What is a normal stale share rate? on: May 18, 2011, 10:10:47 PM
It absolutely depends what you are mining with.  Slower hardware will get more stale shares.

I have a 4650 that mines at about 22MH/s, and it gets 7% stale shares.  But my 5850 gets 0.36% stale shares.  Regardless, if you're using deepbit, he pays you for those stales anyway.
7646  Economy / Marketplace / Re: CoinPal beta - Buying bitcoins with PayPal on: May 18, 2011, 10:01:09 PM
Hi, I have been tiring to buy bitcoin with paypal and came across your site, and send Paypal a Email, asking if they allow buying bitcoin. the reply:
*************
I can assure you that there is no policy against the purchase of
BitCoins, however it is possible that BitCoin simply do not accept
payment through PayPal.
*************
The reply might mean that the front line that replys to this E-mails has no ideal what Bitcoin is?
if enough people sends them E-mail asking for Bitcoins, they might give it some weight in future decision.
I will attempt inform them of what a Bitcoin is.

By the way, sorry if some one posted a similar reply, a lot of people have a lot to say about this, and i can't read it all.
Interesting.  Care to post the full email here?  Definitely update on any future replies they come back with...

Discrepancies in what their employees tell us may force Paypal to outright announce that Bitcoin transactions aren't allowed.  It'd be good publicity.  Smiley
7647  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Difficulty increase - 60% on: May 18, 2011, 09:42:36 PM

Based off of that, hashing growth isn't going to taper off any time soon.  I only hope that USD valuation can keep up to some extent... else by three difficulty increases from now (assuming difficulty in the ~900k range), mining won't even pay for my electricity!

The rise in difficulty is driven by the rise in relative value, not the other way around.
I know that.  That doesn't mean I can't hope that the USD valuation keeps up with difficulty.

Good lord, this graph is scary:

I'd really like to get rid of pagination. It's 2011, lets use ajax infinity scrolling.
Mmmmm.... nice.

On that note, it's 2011, let's stop using forum software that looks like it was made in 1998.  Xenforo, anyone?
7650  Other / Meta / Re: annoying graphical ads in signatures on: May 18, 2011, 08:31:48 PM
as far as I remember yours is not animated, so it's kind of an edge case IMO. But I have to go from memory, all signatures are blocked for me now.
It's not animooted.... I agree though, animated images annoy me, especially in forum signatures.  I don't mind static images at all though, but that's just my personal taste.

This is the image in my signature:

I still don't understand the sentiment that says we need to cut down on post content.  A forum is for discussion, not for only allowing a few people to make "quality posts" and everyone else to read them.  That's called a blog.

Having members vote to hide/show posts is also an absurd idea.  If something is spam, then delete it.  Otherwise, everyone should be allowed an equal opportunity to be heard/read by everyone else.

Here's what I do when I visit the forums BTW:
- Click on "Show new replies to your posts."  Read all of the replies to my posts.
- If I still have time, click on "Show unread posts since last visit."  Click on titles that interest me.

I don't have time to read through every thread posted here - very few people probably do.  I don't think anyone should expect to be able to read through all of the threads either.  Reading through all of the threads is not the point of a busy forum.  So why should we limit the postings to what we are capable of reading?  Just doesn't make sense IMO, and it's not at all in the spirit of what a forum should be.
7652  Other / Meta / Re: annoying graphical ads in signatures on: May 18, 2011, 08:24:59 PM
Does mine bother you?  Just curious, I won't take offense.  But I don't want a bunch of people annoyed at me because I am too blatant/bold in the advertisement of my website.  I could make it smaller, make the colors duller, or just convert it to straight up text.
7653  Economy / Marketplace / Re: CoinPal beta - Buying bitcoins with PayPal on: May 18, 2011, 07:42:16 PM
Withdrawing via Virwox/Second Life still seems to work ok.  I would imagine going the other way would be safe as well.  Paypal has been doing business with Second Life for a long time, so it is unlikely that you would raise any red flags going that route.

I think I will no longer do any sort of direct bitcoin <-> Paypal transactions though.  All of these accounts getting frozen is making me rather averse to the idea.
7654  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY] Open Source pooled mining platform with web interface on: May 18, 2011, 07:35:50 PM
The incentives to *not* release code ATM is greater than the incentives *to* release it. I don't know who's gonna donate much to this bounty, but I for one am amidst development of a complete stack, and given enough incentive could release it - eventually.

Yes.  This is the primary reason why I started writing pool software.  The incentive to keep your stuff private is huge.

In turn, this leads to a fewer number of large pools.

I think bitcoin will be robust and healthy with a larger number of pools.  [Tycho] is a good guy, but it is not healthy for the bitcoin ecosystem that deepbit often exceeds 40% network power.

So we just need a bounty incentive to exceed the natural incentive to keep your stuff private.

Any donors?
7655  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Sapphire 5850 dummy plugs? on: May 18, 2011, 06:01:30 PM
So why does everyone use three resistors when I hear that just one works fine?  Or is that the reason that elcasey's card blew - he was just using one, so it was an uneven resistance load on the card between the three channels?

It shouldn't make a difference whether you do it on DVI or VGA - they use the same wires, VGA just extends and reorganizes them.
7656  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: WTS Just about any product you can find on Newegg.com for BTC!!! on: May 18, 2011, 04:55:39 PM
I can get just about any video card you need on about 2 hours notice.
I sold out of everything again yesterday,  but I plan to order more today.  any requests?

I already linked them, but this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16814102878&cm_re=hd5830-_-14-102-878-_-Product

Those radeon 5830 are extremely cheap at 100usd and can reach 300 mhash/s
I just bought 3 of them last night... not from MemoryDealers though, as I didn't have enough BTC for something like that.  Excited to see how much MH/s I can get out of them!
7657  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: Advertisement opportunity on: May 18, 2011, 04:28:05 PM
Have you ever consider using http://operationfabulous.com to sell banner ads?

It work well for me considering that I get paid 1 BTC a day.
How many pageviews do you receive per day?

I am intrigued...

Uh... you may not need their consent, but in the majority of states, you DO need to notify them that you are recording the phone call.  It is inadmissible as evidence if you do not follow your local laws regarding this.

Agreed. And record yourself telling them that.

Sorry, I misspoke. You do NOT need to notify them that you are recording the phone call. I just rang PayPal to double check at 1-402-935-2050 and verified. They give you their consent at the beginning of the call, no need to notify or ask for consent. Listen carefully to their consent and make your own determination whether it could be provided as evidence in court. I would have no hesitation recording a call (and have many times) and presenting it in court if necessary (no need as of yet).

You gave your consent by calling them, they gave their consent at the beginning of the call. This IMO satisfies 2-party consent.
Ah, I didn't realize they gave consent before you even asked for it.  Tongue  I would agree then, you shouldn't have to notify them of call recording if they explicitly state that it is ok for you to record their calls.

What happens if I deposit 9.99 BTC... a lot of times... ?

That's called being a smartass.

You could also notice that bit-bank does not try to trick and deceive you, like most banks.
However, since this seems to not be a very good idea, I'll work this out to still be profitable, and make you more likely to lend.
I originally made this bank because I kept seeing threads on people loaning bitcoins, and it got annoying.
If you want the bank to work, you have to do something along these lines:
- Pay depositors 10% annual interest on their bitcoins
- Make loans for for borrowers at 20% annual interest on their bitcoins
- You take home the difference between the loan interest and the depositor interest, less any expenses for losses on loans not repaid.

The biggest issue, as several people have pointed out already, is that a bitcoin bank would have no recourse to go after someone who doesn't pay their loan back.  So there is an extraordinarily high risk that a borrower will not repay anything, and you would have to eat all of that cost.  An interest rate must be found that allows you to eat that cost on x% of loans, and still turn a profit.

You could always operate it like one of those "payday loan" shops, where you charge 20% interest every 2 weeks.  Shocked
