7721  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Best Battery Backup for Your Rigs? on: May 16, 2011, 05:29:19 AM
Its much, much cheaper than frying a board full of 5850's, which could cost you all your parts AND weeks worth of lost mining.

Not everyone has stable power. Those who do tend to not see the value in line conditioning. Its insurance. Not an investment.
Good point.  I hadn't thought about the line conditioning side of things.  We have very stable power in my area, aside from the occasional outage from a downed powerline somewhere.

However, the OP did specifically state that he wanted a battery backup for power outages, not for line conditioning.  If he isn't having trouble with brownouts or overvoltage, I wouldn't recommend buying a UPS, for the reasons I already mentioned above.
7722  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: How big of a power supply do I need? on: May 16, 2011, 03:46:47 AM
On a related note, would a 650w PSU be necessary for running 3x5850's, or could I drop it down to a decent 550w or 500w?  Recommendations?  The other components would just be a 65TDP C2D, single stick of memory, and HDD/fans.  Well, and the motherboard, obviously.

if ypu going to OC your cards choose 650w PSU
Yeah, good point.  I do plan to overclock them.
7723  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What I Learned from Building 3x5850 Rigs; May 2011 on: May 16, 2011, 03:46:13 AM
3300MH/s is triple what I currently make (looking at your sig).  I wouldn't be complaining about that!  That's like... $120/day at current rates.  $3600/month... yeah.

Total cost would probably be in the neighborhood of $2300?
7724  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Warning: Bitcoin4Cash fraud! Won't ever do business with Madhatter again. on: May 16, 2011, 03:04:15 AM
i'm willing to bet that it was a life or death decision for Madhatter.  the way the price was escalating at such a parabolic ramp, i'm sure investors were logically locking prices left and right making a killing off of Madhatter.  what is a fixed rate quote anyway?  its effectively a SHORT against btc.  after all, he's in it to make money; he was willing to fix a price thinking he could buy it cheaper later after the fix (this is the short part) and make money doing so.  the parabolic ramp isn't good for everybody; it kills short sellers.
BUT, he did promise the buyers that he would sell at a certain price, so he should have done whatever he needed to do to make that happen, even if it meant a loss to him.

where do you plan on putting 39 rigs and how do you plan on keeping them cool

The rigs will be housed in a pole-barn that I own, and will be cooled using geothermal technology (already existing infrastructure.)
Do you have the capabilities to provide 21000 watts of power throughout said pole-barn.  If not, do you plan to have electricians bid on how much it would cost to upgrade the existing electrical infrastructure to support that many rigs?

I'd do some cost/benefit analysis on this before plunking down some change.

If $200 gets you another 5870, and that 5870 is mining for the next two months, does it really matter if the power cuts out for a day while you're away?  You're likely going to make loads more bitcoins in those two months with an extra card than you would lose in 8 hrs of power outage.

Just sayin.

But buy the UPS.  It'll make you feel better, and it'll keep the difficulty a fraction lower.  Tongue
7728  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: AMD Catalyst 11.5 Discussion on: May 16, 2011, 02:44:29 AM
A friend of mine running a single 6990 reported a slight gain.  I think it was like +15 MH/s or something.  Nothing to write home about, but it was something.

I'd vote for A.

Stop posting while on acid. Your "statements" are not statements, they are just...
Honestly, I don't know what the fuck they are...
Troll or russian.
You need to get around the interwebz more.  That statement has been a meme for quite some time.  He's just repeating something that's been repeated tens of thousands of times elsewhere already.

Sorry BitcoinsWallet, only the first 10 people who received feedback after I started the promotion received the 0.25 BTC prize!  I don't have the exact numbers on hand, but there were at least 19 people who received feedback before you received yours!
7732  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Best bang for the buck? Whole rig on: May 15, 2011, 07:49:49 AM
$260 (Saphire 5850's)
Who's selling $130 5850 cards? The best I got an XFX from newegg that rebated down to $160.
Newegg had 'em for $140 each for several days, but I haven't ever seen them down to $130 before.  That might be a bit optimistic...
7733  Economy / Economics / Re: Value of bitcoin denominated shares will eventually approach 0? on: May 15, 2011, 04:57:15 AM
The flaw here is that the thinking is based on the idea that BTC will continue to rise in value so quickly. In the long run, BTC will deflate exactly at the speed the economy grows. So if the company you invest in grows more slowly than the economy in general (or not at all), then yes, it would have been better to just keep your BTC.

But this is true for dollars as well. If you invest in a company which grows more slowly than the stock market in general, you would have been better off investing in a basket of stocks from the whole market. If you had, you would have reaped the benefits of the stock market growth, instead of the puny growth of the company you invested in.

EXCEPT, we'll be losing BTC as people lose wallets, etc.  And that'll probably happen a lot faster than people anticipate, despite best laid plans.  That deflation won't be due to growth of the economy, so it must be taken in to consideration when making investment calculations.

I do see your point here though.  Difference being, holding on to bitcoins is kind of an "automatic" holding of the Dow Jones.  Smiley
7734  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 135 BTC Stolen from my Deepbit account!!!!!!!! on: May 15, 2011, 04:29:54 AM
Even though my account appears to be fine, I appreciate you being completely transparent with us Tycho, and taking full responsibility for it.  Much respect.
7735  Economy / Economics / Re: How until the Bitcoin is over 9000 USD? on: May 15, 2011, 03:20:05 AM
I'll say 3 years from today.
7736  Economy / Economics / Re: Value of bitcoin denominated shares will eventually approach 0? on: May 15, 2011, 03:19:05 AM
You buy shares at 1 BTC but eventually they'll trade at 0.1, no matter how profitable and efficient the company is. As I said, you could possibly still end up making money from dividends but it would only be slightly more attractive than just holding the bitcoins in your wallet. Basically this will become harder and harder until it becomes impossible when no new BTC is mined.

Sure, but you are not seeing the other side: the product that cost 1 BTC would then cost 0.1 BTC.
He has a point.

He's not talking about the buying and selling with the end consumer.  He's talking about encouraging investment in other companies.

Generally, value of a company can be determined by a price/earnings ratio.  If a company makes 10 BTC in a year, and it is valued at 100BTC, the P/E ratio is 10.  If the same company can only make 1 BTC the next year, because of deflation, then the value will likely drop from 100BTC to 10BTC.

That means, that every investor who invested in the company would lose money compared to just holding on to their bitcoins in the first place.

This is an inherent flaw with a deflationary currency, and one that there is no easy answer around, aside from not investing in companies in the first place.  Unless the value of the company can outpace the value of the bitcoin, there is no reason to invest in a company.  Less investment = less innovation = less economic activity.
7737  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BitcoinTournament.com on: May 15, 2011, 02:52:56 AM
Ah you got me. No, jk but the problem is that bitcoin is more widely excepted by the techy subculture and not the gamers. I mean yes they are somewhat intertwined but not completly.
That might be true, but competition is always good for the marketplace.  It inspires innovation and ensures efficiency.  Granted, there could be a downside for you, but may the better site win!
7738  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BitcoinTournament.com on: May 15, 2011, 12:07:44 AM
I honestly don't see enough market for 2 of such websites to be honest. The use of BTC is just not there to suport 2 hardcore gaming sites.
Of course you don't - you don't want a competitor!
7739  Economy / Marketplace / Re: 0.25 Free BTC [COMPLETED] on: May 15, 2011, 12:05:10 AM
Ok, I also double-sent to seanpd16 and error.  Again, if you guys want to send back, that'd be cool, if not, I won't hate you for it.

I sent back the 0.25 BTC (and had to pay a bloody 0.01 fee).
Lol, sorry about that, but I appreciate it!
