Do i need to do anything to get my wallet to start staking? Or will it just happen automatically once my coins have been in there for a while? How long does it take to stake?

I've followed the steps and mine is stuck on ~497 blocks remaining after adding the blockchain manually. edit: false alarm, its all synced now! finally!
