A lot of av programs are crap then :<

I still think the SSD is worth it.  Labor saved is worth a lot.

Care to elaborate, Sam?
There is no difference whether you use an SSD of a usb flash drive. Linux sees them both as /dev/sda.
Install your favorite distro, set up miners, and test the rig. If you're setting up multiple machines just clone the newly configured OS using dd and you're good to go with minimal effort.
Any quality USB3 flash drive will give you decent bootup speed. Adata N005 (which I value for its high transfer rates) is 30-something dollars.
How can one justify spending the extra cash for SSD drives?
783  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Phoenix Help on: January 07, 2012, 01:15:49 PM
Can't see anything obviously wrong here.

Try dropping some parameters for troubleshooting:
Code:
cd c:\Users\ForBit\Desktop\lolwat\phoenix
phoenix -u http://LeTest:<D7g4k4.>LeTest@MTred.com:8337/ DEVICE=0 -k poclbm AGGRESSION=5
If that works, first change the kernel to phatk2 and then start adding the missing parameters one by one. We'll see when the failure reoccurs.

How about you post the contents of C:\Users\ForBit\Desktop\lolwat\phoenix ?
A screenshot isn't the preferred way to post the directory listing.
Just open the console, CD to the target directory and use the DIR command. You can copy and paste the text output.
786  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Please critique this mining rig build on: January 07, 2012, 12:40:15 AM
The LZP-1000 is a superb power supply.
It's able to give you 77 83 amps in the 12 volt rails.

With those GPUs you could easily get away with a smaller PSU.
With this PSU he can add another GPU later on without hassle and additional expenses.
787  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MTGox will be Hacked again on: January 06, 2012, 11:36:25 PM
Of course it will be attacked. It won't be the first time either... nor hundredth. MtGox is a tempting target for criminals.
The issue is how serious the damage will be. I'm betting minimal, they have a very capable crew.
788  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [349 GH] Eligius pool: ~0Fee SMPPS, no reg, RollNtime, hop OK, BTC+NMC merged! on: January 06, 2012, 10:30:35 PM
The pool is under heavy enemy fire ^^
Sir Chivalrous Luke the Crusader, the bravest of anti-altcoin knights, seems to have pissed off great many folks. I expect an angry mob with pitchforks is besieging castle Eligius right now.

EDIT:: Thanks for making me have to direct all my miners somewhere else Sir Luke. I'll get back when the dust settles, unless I will have found a better pool by then. Bitminter seems to work superbly with cgminer, you know... just watch the non-existent stales ::drools::
789  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Please critique this mining rig build on: January 06, 2012, 10:22:22 PM
Beg your pardon? Rebooting a dedicated miner a lot? Doling out money for a SSD drive?
Let me check my calendar - is it All Fool's Day yet? Surely you must be joking.

If you need bootup speed just buy a faster flash drive, something using USB3 like A-Data N005.
790  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: cannot start bitcoin-qt on: January 06, 2012, 10:14:11 PM
One quick piece of advice: reboot.
Windows does a lot of file caching in its memory. If a corrupt file gets cached the problem may persist.
It blows my mind how much the Redmond-based operating systems love to be rebooted.

Did you per chance check the digital signature of the downloaded file?
791  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: She should have used Bitcoin on: January 06, 2012, 09:01:42 PM
Don't destroy antique violins. Choose Bitcoin.

Just set a new MOTD on the servers I administrate   ^^
792  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Please critique this mining rig build on: January 06, 2012, 07:31:43 PM
A lot of miner's don't even use an actual Hard Drive. Normally it is a flashdrive with LinuxCoin on it. They load the rails with a resistor.

Aren't you mixing two different concepts? The resistor trick is only required when using multiple PSUs with one rig. It has nothing to do with using flash drives.
793  Other / Meta / Re: I am trying to understand why this forum has public Tor nodes blocked. on: January 06, 2012, 04:38:08 PM
You guys IP ban here? L O L

Please learn to read. I told you why such approach is USUALLY taken. It's an admin's 101.
I'm not a staff member here.
I do agree there are far better ways of handling the small subset of unruly users.
794  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: InstallMonetizer.exe - does what exactly? on: January 06, 2012, 04:35:12 PM
I've used an installer with this thing and it was completely harmless. It's not accurate to say that it is straight up malware, but it could function as such.

Yet another piece code which calls the mother-ship for "a most important" reason. Duh.
795  Other / Meta / Re: I am trying to understand why this forum has public Tor nodes blocked. on: January 06, 2012, 04:27:44 PM
Some friends and I have tried to register with our regular connections with Tor-based switches but they were blocked. No matter, we got some fresh Tor bridges that aren't on the public listings.

Why is this forum requiring that extra step? You're blocking a major part of your audience with this.

The abuse argument doesn't pan out considering a true abuser knows that public Tor listings are a no-go anyways. They'll go through the trouble of getting fresh bridges like we did.

A major part of the audience? I hardly think so.
Blocking TOR and/or anonymizing proxies is usually done in order to prevent circumventing IP bans.
That being said, I'd prefer such obstacles to be lifted.
796  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Pool Ops are now the Alt Currency Police on: January 06, 2012, 03:33:53 PM
...A useful countermeasure would be to replace the static locking time (120 blocks) for new coins w/ a variable one based on block chain length.  Maybe starting out with a lock of 1000 (not much use for alt-coins on day 0 anyways) declining wot 120 blocks based on block length over say the first year.
Precisely. Chain length, recent block generation speed, with some tweaking any algorithmic approach would beat a hard-coded value.

I would love to hear (or read) from a miner at Eligius pool and how THEY feel about having their hashing power used for something they didn't consent to or agree with ?
I'm here Smiley
Obviously, I'm not overjoyed about Luke's alleged endeavor. That's a breach of agreement between Luke and his miners.
Surely, my hashing power will be put to better use than shooting up alt-chain currencies, right Luke, old chap?
I'm not moving my miners just yet but a yellow flag has been raised.

I congratulate people like gmaxwell ( responsible for the LTC TX spam attack ) and Luke-Jr.
Well done to you both ! Screw the scammers and pump & dumpers.
How about "screw them" by just staying away and never touching their chains?
797  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Please critique this mining rig build on: January 06, 2012, 01:09:41 PM
No, Corsair is good.

Very few manufacturers actially build PSUs (the actual manufacturers are companies like Seasonic, CWT, Delta, Superflower, Impervio, or FSP).
The others just purchase built PSUs and put their labels on them.
Corsair doesn't manufacture PSUs.

That particular one was OEMd for Corsair By Channel Well Technologies (CWT).
The HX1050 is based on CWT's recent PUC platform which is a decent design.
Efficiency-wise it does 80 PLUS SILVER(1) though the HX1050 was never certified.

Start using a decent antivirus... one reporting a miner as a virus is not a good one

I second that. Symantec just sucks.

I'll stick to the techie stuff and leave wild guessing to others.

As to sourceforge, ALWAYS download the .asc file together with the version of the client you're downloading
(if you need bitcoin-0.5.1-win32.zip, make sure to grab bitcoin-0.5.1-win32.zip.asc as well).
The .asc file is a digital signature file.
You can use an open source tool named gpg to verify that not one bit was changed in the bitcoin client since Gavin signed it.

Verification is done like that:
Code:
gpg --verify s:\progs\bitcoin\bitcoin-0.5.1-win32.zip.asc s:\progs\bitcoin\bitcoin-0.5.1-win32.zip

Of course you need Gavin's public key to do that. Just grab it from bitcoin.org (http://bitcoin.org/gavinandresen.asc)
You'll need to import it into gpg:
Code:
gpg --import c:\...\gavinandresen.asc

If you're REALLY paranoid, downoading source code only and doing a complete diff against the previous version might be the way to go.
Once you've satisfied yourself, compile Smiley

Ad 3.
A short message? Tempting as it may sound to a non-technical user, that would be like applying growth hormones to the blockchain. Those messages would all have to live there, right?
The last thing anyone needs is a bloated blockchain artificially inflated with user's messages.
Also, messaging is kinda out of spec: bitcoin is a money transfer system, it serves the same purpose as Visa's infrastructure. Why bother?
800  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Owner specified bitcoin escheat mechanism on: January 05, 2012, 11:41:10 PM
DAT,

I proposed automatic backups made by the client itself (or even a wallet-caretaker background service installed together with the client).
That would take care of lack of backups, outdated backups or corruption.
A hard drive failure might still be a pain, I know, but synchronizing and backing data up in the cloud is becoming more and more prevalent.
"Documents" is gotta be THE folder to receive this special treatment. Windows 8 might very well do that out of the box.
Even unsophisticated users know there is a Documents folder with their data in it and putting the wallet file there isn't much pain, is it?

Unsophisticated users do what their computer tells them to do, that's why I think offering encryption to the user by default a very prudent step. Isn't it?
Think of it this way, Windows had a firewall since Win2000 but until XP SP2 it was off by default. Since SP2 everybody is running a firewall whether they know it or not.
Let's offer encryption by default. The users will comply... for their own benefit.
That they might choose a poor passphrase is a sad but unaviodable fact of life and can't be helped.
Of course they are already chosing poor passphrases for their internet banking and e-mail so let's not cry over this issue, ok?

My approach is, we can't say "Gavin, we're changing to deterministic wallets the first thing tomorrow" but we can tweak the existing client easily and make some impact now.

Nighty night, I'm spent. See you tomorrow.
