7981  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 15-Year-Old Makes $100,000 on Bitcoin on: June 12, 2014, 05:38:03 AM
I sure hope this kid did something REALLY nice for his grandma.  Boondogle or whatever the heck it's called wouldn't be around if it weren't for her initial $1,000.

I would say he should give her 10 Bitcoins but that would seem a bit strange so maybe a nice trip and vacation
A light one since there is age but see new places etc.
7982  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-06-11] “Woohoo!” Expedia announces Bitcoin acceptance on: June 12, 2014, 05:35:26 AM
This is the news of the day for me
Remembers using Expedia for a trip a few years back so having the option to use my Bitcoin on that trip is a sweet bonus
(Got to start resisting the urge now XD)

I agree this is one of the biggest stories of the day.  Funny that it's only the story of the day because a year or 18 months ago this would have been the story of the month!
I didn't see one negative story today yet the price is falling.  Sometimes I just don't understand the market and that's way I do minimal trading.

The market is probably going WOAH
But in actuality the market might be thinking they will be converting to fiat rapidly so for the short term so the price will dip a bit
Anyways still on schedule

7983  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Marriage as a contract in the blockchain. on: June 12, 2014, 05:25:42 AM
Getting married by blockchain is pretty awesome.  That is ground breaking, but it seems like to me this will indeed be the rule.

I can even see each country setting up some kind of account for each citizen on the blockchain at birth, where public records about that person can be stored.  Graduations, marriages, public elections, certifications, criminal convictions...... Once on, they can't ever be erased!  Asking somebody for their bitcoin ID and seeing a picture of them posted on the blockchain every few years, even some biometric data would be an identity that couldn't be faked.

Great I can see this actually working as a valuable infometric tracking system
The problem with it is that if people can all access everything in a public blockchain then it would be a bit easy to forge as well.
Still a similar system could work

Anyways the marriage through blockchain is a cool way to do it.

First Congrats on your marriage hope it goes well
Second Putting the contract on the blockchain seems like a neat way of recording it forever
IT is a ledger of transactions so I say go for it.

7988  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-06-11] Cash transfers in Africa - Bitcoin for the poor on: June 11, 2014, 11:02:27 AM
When M-Pesa integrated Bitcoin payments through Kipochi, there was a lot of hype about the effect Bitcoin going to have on the African remittance sector. But unfortunately, the service died down only a few months after it started.

Kipochi as a service was a failure but the idea of a SMS network being developed in Africa like 37coins piqued my interest
7989  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hard fork questions on: June 11, 2014, 08:10:54 AM
A hard fork is a change of the Bitcoin protocol that is not backwards-compatible;

The example from 2012 your mentioning is from March 2013 and was a Chain Fork which resulted in a new client that did not recognize previous Bitcoin transactions

An explanation of what happened is in this link
https://bitcoin.org/en/alert/2013-03-11-chain-fork

Simply put the reason for reverting back was that the new client was not compatible with the old one so the community decided to revert to the original chain and abandon that fork.

http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/9986/how-is-a-hard-fork-resolved

To simplify it a bit more

Miners control the network and can decide on any changes to it with the majority of mining power

Edit Found a Reddit think this is simple enough if your still a bit lost feel free to ask
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1a51xx/now_that_its_over_the_blockchain_fork_explained/

The programs that read the blockchain, the bitcoin ledger, disagree.

Due to a bug in 0.7, it says that HIS is the correct version of this ledger and 0.8 says that HIS is the correct version.

Miners (the people who add pages to the blockchain) are told to switch to the 0.7 program so that this version gains more support and the other one is discarded. (orphaned).

Regular users are not affected. Their transactions are included in both ledgers and don't need to change any programs.

During that time, though, there is a slight chance of a double-spend ocurring. That is why people recommended merchants and exchanges to wait until there is one single blockchain again before processing purchases and merchandise.

@ In regards to op there would be two ledgers recording transactions at the same time
Both would disagree and state their version is correct and miners would make the final decision
The network does not shut down it's just that their are two chains recording the transactions and not willing to agree with each other on the outcome
This is resolved with one chain becoming longer than the other

The problem with the 2013 fork was that 0.8 and 0.7 both thought their version was correct and could not resolve the issue
This was solved with miners deciding to use 0.7 over 0.8 which then led to 0.8 accepting the changes and not disputing the transactions.
7990  Other / Politics & Society / Re: See, THIS is why we shouldn't have included Russia. on: June 11, 2014, 07:59:57 AM
Well the US was expecting the private ventures to make them space capable by now
The problem with killing the shuttle program is that they didn't adopt the capsule program
Proving that the Russians were right that a capsule is better than the reusable shuttle in terms of cost at least but not size.

Seems like an easy one from the Job Description : Wants to hire someone who will investigate it.
Pretty sure most of the senior or hero members on this forum qualify by that standard lol.

But on the page

7994  Economy / Speculation / Re: We're not going anywhere, until the 51% question is answered on: June 11, 2014, 07:23:50 AM
The fact that they hit 48% tells me the average miner doesn't much care about it.

Because it's a non-issue. And if it becomes an issue, they will obviously move, as their profits rely on the success of bitcoin.

Well I think this opinion might be partially correct that said I read a few threads on Gigahash abusing its power when it last had greater than 50% of the network by reversing bets.
That said the network should correct itself if it is abused again so a non-issue but with a caution involved in it.

That said there is more incentive to leave the system working as it is than to double spend on it and lose more than you would gain
7995  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Solar Roadways... on: June 11, 2014, 07:15:48 AM
Fair point Byrant, I just went with those two since they are the typical ones on the table when your talking about the NPT and Non-Proliferation.

Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons must mean that none of the world nations can possess nuclear weapons. It is hypocrisy from the part of Russia and the US, when they say that other nations can't have nukes and only they can have them.

It is hypocritical that is why the NPT has had a resolution for them to denuclearize their own arsenals every 5 years
Which the US and Russia did by decreasing total units but also updating and modernizing their arsenals

That said the NPT is non binding and attempts to make it binding would result in states leaving the treaty so its complex.

Pretty much can sum it up here
http://www.armscontrol.org/act/2013_12/How-Divergent-Views-on-Nuclear-Disarmament-Threaten-the-NPT

Consequently, nuclear-weapon states consider nuclear disarmament and the achievement of a world without nuclear weapons to be a long-term aspirational objective at best. Thus, pending the achievement of perceived global preconditions for nuclear disarmament, these countries are prepared to take only limited and gradual disarmament steps without fundamentally reassessing the role of nuclear weapons or altering the nuclear strategic balance. At the same time, nuclear-weapon states focus on the prevention of further proliferation of nuclear weapons, which they see as the only real challenge to the integrity of the NPT. This is not only their clear priority, but they argue it is a necessary precondition for more-substantial nuclear disarmament steps.

The perspectives of most non-nuclear-weapon states regarding the urgency of nuclear disarmament are quite different. Among these countries, nuclear weapons and nuclear deterrence are widely seen as a high-risk approach to national and international security. According to this view, humanity escaped unharmed during the Cold War period and thereafter as much by luck as by design. Moreover, the concepts of nuclear deterrence and the necessity of nuclear strategic stability, which were merely transferred to the 21st century with little change, look increasingly anachronistic 20 years after the end of the Cold War. This lack of adaptation to new realities might be seen not only as a missed opportunity but also as a serious misjudgment and a key driver and incentive for proliferation. Arguably, there is a direct relation between the continued reliance on nuclear weapons by nuclear-weapon states and the quest for these weapons by other states. This link can only be broken by a collective and sincere move away from nuclear weapons.

Most non-nuclear-weapon states that are not part of “nuclear sharing arrangements” or “nuclear umbrellas” consider nuclear weapons to be highly dangerous in themselves. They view retention of and reliance on nuclear weapons as outdated, while seeing disarmament as an essential element of preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The mere existence of nuclear weapons results in a permanent risk of devastating consequences for the entire planet. Such an existential threat to all humankind should no longer be handled by a few states as a national security matter to the detriment of the security interests of the vast majority of states.

So it's a fundamental shift in the approach between the Nuclear Weapon States and the Non Nuclear Weapon States on Non-Proliferation

7996  Other / Archival / Re: Updated Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns on: June 11, 2014, 07:04:48 AM
yeah finally i am confirmed by XBTec
with bitcoininformation hold his escrow, everything will be fine;D
i have bad experience with updown.bt before Sad

I think OP should remove BTCX2 campaign in his list since they are PONZI operator
with their link listed in OP post, did we facilitate people to support ponzi indirectly ?

Well the forum allows it and this is meant to be a comprehensive list of all signature campaigns
So picking and choosing doesn't make sense to me
Rather a warning or an * before a signature campaign or a Joining is not Recommended measure seems like a strong enough action to me and to let the users decide if they want to join that campaign or not.
7997  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Solar Roadways... on: June 11, 2014, 06:59:33 AM
The problem is not all nations are transparent about their facilities and capabilities
Having enriched uranium for medical usage (nuclear medicine) requires 20% purity
That said once at 20% it becomes much easier to get to 90% nuclear grade than it is from that 3% to 5% enrichment

No need to single out North Korea or Iran, when none of the nuclear powers themselves (including India and Pakistan) are transparent about their facilities and capabilities. How can the US or Russia blame the DPRK, when the former is having thousands of nuclear weapons compared to the few dozen under the control of the latter?

Fair point Byrant, I just went with those two since they are the typical ones on the table when your talking about the NPT and Non-Proliferation.

Technical list is
India, Israel, Pakistan, North Korea, Iran and Previously Libya to complete that list
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_on_the_Non-Proliferation_of_Nuclear_Weapons

I could go on a rant about how Israel's policy of ambiguity is a problem since they don't officially say we have nukes but also don't say we do not have nukes as well.

Or India having Nukes making Pakistan want to have nukes as well due to their tensions to have a power balance but that said I agree with you having the nuclear chip on the bargaining table is a weapon that larger states simply do not want little or unstable states to be able to wield.

Heck could even say Gaddafi following the USA and disarming his nuclear arsenal led to his downfall as without the nuclear deterrent they were not afraid to invade and take over the country
Disarmament in 2003 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disarmament_of_Libya
Invasion and Takeover in 2011 with a civil war ongoing to now because even though Gaddafi was controversial he was the balancing pin between all different ethnic groups.

Carrying on one DPRK missile launched would destroy a big area of Japan or South Korea and do massive damage (Not China though lone buddy/sort of), but that attack would be suicidal and that is what scares large states that one missile can be a giant threat and as a result slows nuclear proliferation even for peaceful purposes, since they assume not all actors are rational.

Or governments change why South Africa abandoned its program once Apartheid failed and the ANC was to come into power.

That said Solar is a neat solution to those energy problems just not scalable or low enough in cost yet (even with the recent US Solar Bankruptcies to Chinese Firms), but Geothermal seems like the most efficient one in the long run if technologies can improve stored energy forever (well a long time) from the Earth.

However there is always room for a more diverse set of energy options but that Geopolitics still gets in the way.

I am a bit jealous of the earliest adopters but they took the risk so they get the biggest reward
This just goes to show that people of all ages strike it rich
Just hope that is also myself in 5 years with Bitcoin  Cheesy

But 1000 to 100,000 must have sold around the 90 to 250 dollar range
Still it is neat to see he has enough to pay his employees in Bits and launch his company

Thanks for sharing the full article I liked his opinion it does take time to develop an understanding of Bitcoin but once you do there is no reason not to believe in its potential.
It was the best performing asset of 2014 has a market potential far larger than Tesla and is in itself an innovating development let alone all the utility it can provide.
Simple but forward it is making money better by improving it let the bears join the bulls.
8000  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin 5 years from now on: June 11, 2014, 06:31:42 AM
5 years from now people will be saying: You remember 5 years ago in 2014 you could buy 1000 bits/1 mBTC for less than a dollar, I wish I had bought a couple mBTC's back then, I'd be rich now!

Or maybe by then the dollar has already collapsed

I decided when I got into bit coin this past March that in 5 more years I would not be one of the people having to say that again. I m still slowly but surely collecting them and plan to be envied rather than feel envy.

That makes sense there is a lot of money going into Bitcoin and the ultra rich and technologically proficient people are already launching several companies into this industry so I can see where this logic comes from.
Also want to be one of those that has no regrets about getting a few mbtcs now and not regretting it in 5 years time.
