81  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New Member Introduction on: May 01, 2013, 07:29:25 AM
Hello,

I'm a Quant, Statistician, and Data Scientist.  Almost done with my PhD in statistics and am looking forward to applying my knowledge to the Bitcoin world.

I'm starting to develop an analysis of Bitcoin market micro-structure and would appreciate any insight that people have.

Thanks!

What's a quant, pray tell kind sir?
82  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Buying Bitcoins via cash deposit in the US on: May 01, 2013, 07:23:03 AM
I'm in the U.S.  I was asked for ID when using bitinstant for a small cash deposit to mtgox recently.  The clerk even took a photocopy of my ID.  Bitinstant has you use moneygram to send a payment to zip zap inc, then the funds are deposited into mtgox.  It seemed like a very complicated way to ultimately get bitcoins, and costly in terms of fees, but the money was in my mtgox acct in less than 15 minutes.

A side note- to get more people to adopt and use bitcoin, there needs to be a much easier and less costly way for the average person to buy bitcoins with local currency anonymously.

I don't understand why everyone is so worried about remaining anonymous when entering the bitcoin market.

83  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Fincen registration of bitcoin businesses on: May 01, 2013, 06:57:19 AM
Both are outside the U.S. and not subject to Fincen regulation. Mt. Gox is having a different company deal with their U.S. customers for transfers into/out of the U.S. and they will handle Fincen.

I doubt BTC-e will ever register. There is not even stated actual physical address for that business or the domain registration. The registration contains what appear to be fake phone numbers.

That's interesting to know. Wonder if any CNN anchors would care to interview the kind folks at btc-e?
84  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Here to talk Litecoin on: May 01, 2013, 06:54:55 AM
Anyone here just want to say some general things about Litecoin?  I own some, traded my bitcoins into it and have made a nice profit so far.  Ive been reading lately about some guy named LukeJR who has been deleting wiki pages and trying to destroy the LTC system as a whole.  Guess thats all I have to say so far.

Don't know why I can't get to minelitecoin.com although its pool is still 'ceptin' shares. Seems like there was talk on the regular side of a stuck block or branch? Not exactly sure. There's only a dozen miners there, with less than a handful in the beaucoupsdollar eschelon.

I use an exchange to get litecoins to change into pieces of bitcoins, and then whip them over to Japan, where people pay us dollars for them, then send that to a stateside account where I can push it into my money market, which periodically gets slid over into CDs. Some people just hold them like investments.  I would have to see years worth of wavelet analyses and figure out the 24 hour trading day before attempting such risky behavior..

I'm getting between ten and 20 shares an hour. In a couple days that's translated to: 0.05412799999999999 ltc, or about 20 cents.
that sounds about normal, sounds like a fun investing golden egg mining venture.

Solar energy and most renewable (except perhaps hydro) cannot survive without government subsidies.  Wave energy would be really cool but no one has been able to successfully harness that yet.

What if instead of govt subsidies we had market based incentives to grow solar, farm some kind of cc based on solar energy.  Sell back unused power to the grid....

3 machines average about 9.47 khash/s together. Just old cpu's.
aha, that's fairly low but you should be getting a few shares an hour at least. If the connection details are koshe you should at least see some workload details?
88  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: About PayPal. on: April 28, 2013, 08:36:55 AM
No. It is not allowed by paypal

Ida thought pazzlepizzle would be playing nice with virtual money, seeing as how they got their own bank, and eBay and all..  So weird.

For God's sake why would we want to solve greenhouse gas?
It's April 27th and we still have snow on the ground in Wisconsin!
I say we need more greenhouse gas, I'm sick of winter and snow!!!

Two reasons.

1. Fun.
2. Profit.

Ok three.

How is it possible for bitcoin type markets to fix the global climate change crisis?

Can someone fix something that doesn't even knows if it really needs to be fixed?

Yes, certainly not everyone who drives a clean energy vehicle doesn't really need to know the damage other people do to the atmosphere with their spew-mobiles.

I'm not a big stock nerd, so what's the fun in holding btc? I wonder how many people who canceled bfl orders wish they hadn't now that devices seem to be materializing, some where. Smiley

Idk. I'm a big fan of solar and that kind of alternative energy. Geothermal would be the ultimate. I think we have it easy in the us with regard to environmental taxes. Hmm.

Still working on my newbie posts so I can access other boards and ask specific questions. Currently trying to mine ltc and I'm not sure how to tell if it's working. litecoin-qt is running and several miners using cpuminer 2.2.3 are connected and hashing - but that's all I see, a hash rate.

Sweetness what is that hash rate ?
