81  Other / Meta / Re: Are carding discount offers allowed on this forum? on: December 30, 2015, 04:59:30 AM
If trading of goods obtained through criminal means is legal in your country and the buyer's country, it is allowed here. I seriously doubt it is legal though. And by disclosing it to buyers the buyer might be liable as well.

1. Trading of goods that are illegal in the seller's or buyer's country is forbidden.

2. Insert a [CLOSED] tag to the subject line when your offer is no more open.
82  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Can coins stocked on an old Bitcoin Core be lost ? on: December 30, 2015, 02:05:23 AM
TL;DR
Stop saying it's not possible. It's possible. There may be reasons why some want to expire old coins. Explicitly mentioned are weaknesses in the cryptography potentially leading to old coins (say Satoshi's stash) being recovered and old transactions becoming a bottle neck for nodes.

------------

The topic title shows a lack of understanding on Bitcoin. Coins are not "stocked" on a client. Transactions are stored in a ledger. The client merely holds the keys needed to manipulate those transactions. The ledger follows the rules of the Bitcoin protocol. And that protocol can (and will) be changed if the need arises. While a scenario that will lead to old unspent outputs being invalidated seems very unlikely now, a need may suddenly arise. If you own bitcoins you'd do well to keep up with news on this. There is no guarantee that you will still be able to spent an old output in the future.

Quotes, for reference:

OP's concern is valid. What if your old wallet format does not get recognized by new clients and the old clients are not able to send transactions after 2 years? (private key is relatively safe but still... see below)

In fact, in today's bitcoin design, nothing is guaranteed. A new protocol that is accepted by majority of the nodes can even spend your coins without your private key. Of course such a situation will almost never happen because of the decentralized nature of bitcoin: Existing stakeholders have many reasons to deny such kind of protocol change, since it basically ruins people's trust in bitcoin

However, if the protocol change is coming from a malicious actor or sybil attack, then old coins might still get lost in a compromised environment

The most important is to be aware that unlike gold, no rule of bitcoin is fixed by law of nature, they are just rules made by human and maintained by consensus among its participants. So you can expect that different clients have different rules, but usually you don't get enough details about these rules unless you are familiar with source code inspection and build the client by yourself each time

Theoretically, if secp256k1 were broken then there would be a strong incentive to migrate to another algorithm.  The migration may specify a deadline past which all old-format outputs are deemed unspendable.  In this event, yes, coins stored with an old version of Bitcoin Core and not rescued in time could end up locked away forever.

<snip>

Expiring very old UTXOs but not reassigning their value is acceptable, though. In fact, this can be done in a softfork. I think that doing this would be a good idea:
- If apparently-lost BTC is at risk of being recovered illegitimately due to cryptographic weaknesses. The release of so many lost coins would be a major blow to the the economy. Once it looks like ECDSA will only be secure for 5 more years or so, I think that a timer should be started to expire all ECDSA-secured UTXOs at the expected point at which they will become too insecure.
- If storing the UTXO set becomes a very major bottleneck for full nodes and there are no other good alternatives to UTXO expiration on the table. Several years of advance warning should be given before the first expiration.
83  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Master-P POSSIBLE SCAM. I lost complete faith in this forum now. on: December 30, 2015, 01:00:05 AM
Am I the only person on here that would report a theft of thousands of dollars to the police / appropriate authorities?

Given that each count is at most a low degree grand larceny case, unlikely that anything will ever happen. You really think anyone would ever be extradited and brought to court for this? Doubtful. Local police departments wouldn't know where to begin and are unlikely to spend any resources pursuing it.

I'm saying that IF the person behind the Master-p account was hacked in the way they describe THEY should report that to the police. According to the post quoted below the amount that was supposedly stolen from them is over $10.000.

I think, a person with the following trust rating is not eligible to be on DT.

Trust:    1: -1 / +15

What are you trying to say?
86  Other / Meta / Re: Can I request an unban? on: December 22, 2015, 12:42:20 AM
So I ban evaded once, and I need my account back, but I did it again.
What can I do? My account is banned until January.

We could ban you permanently, if you are so kind and tell me which account you need back ?

Subtle!

Also way to go, Glorantq, on showing a total lack of respect to the rules *and* your huge sense of entitlement.

What you needed to do was go play on reddit until January. But I reckon you're bound to be banned permanently soon, if you're not already.
87  Other / Meta / Re: theymos is gonna kill me! on: December 21, 2015, 01:16:07 AM
This poor person should open a reputation thread about Gleb. Promising $50 and not delivering is a scam. And to add insult to injury Gleb is mocking them.

Waiting for someone on DT to paint Gleb the darkest of reds for this blatant cheating!

If you did not pick up on any sarcasm in this post then either your sarcasm detector is malfunctioning or my sarcasm factory is putting out sub par products. Or both.
88  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Looking for a TRUSTED buyer on: December 16, 2015, 12:40:52 AM
K.Dang how'd u get -227 Huh
Some people were upset with me and left me negative trust out of spite.....I was texting you earlier today, I think

I think the negative trust was left because you've been

  • using multiple accounts as sock puppets to strengthen your position in an argument
  • using multiple accounts to escrow your own deals (which you still seem to think is perfectly fine)
  • been lying and deceiving all the time (example: about ACCTSeller and Panthers52 being your alts, or about being banned

And now you're here saying it was left out of spite?! Another lie, if you'd ask me. Also you're again trying to obfuscate that Panthers52 is one of your alts.
89  Economy / Reputation / QuickSeller / Panthers52 back to their old tricks on: December 15, 2015, 01:05:42 AM
See this post https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1175806.20, started by QuickSeller.

They used their alt Panthers52 to necro it 2 days ago. And they're trying to obfuscate that they control both accounts yet again. Come on, QuickSeller, are we really going to do this again?

If you want to know how the scammer/bully tspacepilot hypothesized that I am someone else then you should ask him, however he probably will not want to admit as to how much he was willing to stalk someone else that he was attempting to bully. There are one or two possibilities as to what he did, however that is off topic in this thread and is speculation.

...
PS: Can I ask you why are you using this alt-account and not your 'main' account Quickseller?
...
Which main account are you referring to?

Kind Regards
Panthers52

Here are they admitting it's their alt:

giant off-topic wall-o-text

And a bump and signature for it (wrong account?)

^^^This is clearly off-topic in this thread about whether new feedback should override old feedback and the cute little feedback war that Wardick seems to be perpetrating.

@QS: I think you're looking for this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1174567.0

Mods: can we get some help in here?
I am not looking for another thread. Although there is a portion of what I said that does not have to do with the OP, at least one statement in my post does (which is the threshold for it being on-topic), and is therefore appropriate. I was responding to a post that responded to P52, and the normal thing to do is to use that same account to issue a response. For clarification, I used the stronger reputation of QS (that has been damaged as of recently, but is still one that contains a large amount of trust that has not been breached  - eg no theft, no information leak), to back a statement made by an alt of mine that was outed.
90  Other / Meta / Re: I am so over this petty drama. on: December 09, 2015, 12:41:58 AM

''should we stop discussing other users publicly, and limit the discussion to just their trust rank page?'' Now he says he is not against freedom of speech, he should lock the thread otherwise he is contradicting himself. By the way, trolling, like you do is baneable in this forum, be careful.

The definition of trolling is posting deliberately rude comments on the internet to provoke angry reactions. I've never done that. I would understand if I said "YOU ARE STUPID, ANNOYING, AND YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING" being considered as trolling.

Me calmy pointing out opinions and facts is not. You on the other hand happen to be too sensitive, which means you at some point will be banned for falsely reporting comments.

The ignore feature is there for a reason. I suggest you use it.

Let's get our definitions right, shall we? [1]

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/trolling

Quote
7.
Digital Technology. Informal.
to post inflammatory or inappropriate messages or comments on (the Internet, especially a message board) for the purpose of upsetting other users and provoking a response.
to upset or provoke (other users) by posting such messages or comments.

No need to be rude to troll.

On the topic, the trust page is not suitable for any form of discussion. Questionable behaviour can not be argued on it. A reputation thread allows for this. The trust page can not replace reputation threads. Hence, I am against your proposal. Please add my quote to the OP in the against section.  Tongue

[1]Are you provoked yet?

92  Other / Meta / Re: Is Theymos anonymous? on: December 04, 2015, 02:41:19 AM
First of all... Holy mother of necros!

Ok, that out of the way... In the years that this forum has been operating Theymos has failed to pull of any scam that caught our attention. I am sure opportunity has stared him in the face many times. I declare him to be the most inadequate scammer I know.

Not scamming when presented with opportunity to do so generally shows a person can be trusted, though it is no guarantee.

Someone spoke my name ?  Grin
3 times in a bathroom mirror and i will appear LOL

My main accounts are:

codishmumu

thats the only account which might be your real one...

yeah maybe or TheGr33k
i say the later based on post style.. one is all bad and the other all nice / happy.
i am convinced the name in the quote is his girl-friend.
Who was in trouble here before for trying to flash her cans to us on Skype for Bitcoin.

The 2 or 3 of them have a nasty history here.. they know that now.
And they can talk crap about me or try and claim to -BE- me but..

There is only ONE Spoetnik and your lookin' at him  Cool

Further more i have not made a career out of sketchy trades here or sketchy posts.
Such as selling Gems for a game or Selling my tits on Skype..

Those 3 are a huge sack of extreme lunacy !
Tie it up tight and throw it out into the middle of the lake.

PS:
Hey buddy if you're me then prove it.. log into my account and say something as proof.

I just did...(showing again how we argue to throw people off)

The posting habits are kinda rediclous I think he got in trouble for big font... so he goes to tiny font.  It is being a troll we all know it.  But I'm not sure if it's ban-able or just trolling.   If someone uses rediclous font size over and over is it ban-able?

He also has 5 posts currently front page meta.  Seems like hes taking a lot of moderator time.
I see the forum has no sense of humor. That's cool.

Just because people don't like your flavor of "humor" doesn't mean they do not have a sense of humor. It may instead indicate they have a more developed sense of humor, such as enjoying flatulence humor. Now pull my finger!
94  Other / Meta / Re: VOD should be removed from default trust for systematic abuse of his position on: December 01, 2015, 12:45:03 AM
... VOD if you and the rest of the staff ...

That is priceless. I love you, Spoetnik.

You should have figured out by now that Vod is not staff.
95  Other / Meta / Re: Why 0.11.1 isn't shown at the top of the forum as latest version? on: November 18, 2015, 06:00:31 AM
I think it's a good idea to wait at least a few weeks before upgrading to the most recent edition. Let them iron out the bugs 1st. I always wait a few weeks before I upgrade.

In general that's true, but this is a bugfix release, so in this case it is good to upgrade as soon as possible. (If you're still on 0.10.x, 0.10.3 was just released as well with the same fixes.)

But I still need to do the gitian build to verify the binary before I update the news. Maybe tomorrow.

It takes long because Theymos builds and verifies the binary manually before updating the news. It is just a few posts up. Not that hard to find...

... This is my personal opininion: There will be no real non-controlled currency in the world. There's no government that's going to put up with it for long.

Quote from: Jamie Dimon
There will be no currency that gets around government controls.

I know there are some here that belief the governments will just let it slide. Or that there will be some revolution. But seriously, it's very unlikely. It's more likely that the government will put controls in place. They don't like uncontrolled stuff.

Governments are taking steps to take cash out of the equation. Do you really think they're going to let bitcoin be unregulated? I think that's a very, very naive point of view.
100  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin CEO on: November 05, 2015, 06:46:23 AM
It's all about grabbing those headlines. They're using "Bitcoin" to describe the industry. In that way, sure it could be compared to "Airline" CEO. Bitcoin is an hot topic, and as such adding it to title draws more readers. They have many options for an headline:

  • Bitcoin CEO Spent Embezzled Funds on Prostitutes
  • Exchange CEO Spent Embezzled Funds on Prostitutes
  • Tech CEO Spent Embezzled Funds on Prostitutes
  • CEO Spent Embezzled Funds on Prostitutes

It's their job to pick the one that will get most attention.

But the quote below is plain wrong because they added 's.
Quote
Bitcoin's CEO in Jail Over Fraud Charges
It implies that Bitcoin is an entity that has an CEO.
