8101  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Are there any SEC regulated exchanges? on: April 18, 2018, 11:46:55 PM
Circle bought Poloniex specifically with the SEC's blessing, presumably to ward off any future nightmares. If there's going to be a fully compliant exchange, it'll be Poloniex.

https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/circle-leaps-exchange-business-poloniex-acquisition/

The question remains how many ICOs will be considered acceptable. Not sure if any will be. We'll have to wait and see. Getting on Poloniex would be a brute of a job I'd imagine.
8102  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: exchange platform in the US on: April 18, 2018, 11:42:30 PM
Is the OP just buying or planning on trading?

If I was just buying I would bypass exchanges completely and go through an OTC broker. You'd get personalised service and quite likely no limits at all.
8103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hacking crypto-wallets on: April 18, 2018, 11:38:23 PM
What a complete twat that bloke is. A big time crypto investor should not be making mistakes that basic.

If you're involving email anywhere you should be using 2FA, and not phone or email based. The most secure is printed codes from gmail. After that it's Authenticator.

If you intend to move coins regularly then a hardware wallet is a no brainer. If you're holding for the long term then do a properly created paper wallet.
8104  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 18, 2018, 02:37:00 PM
The WO is often brilliantly off topic, but racist propaganda is not what I am looking for, especially from people who aren't even Bitcoiners and probably think they're winning because no-one has yet shown them the door, they often still get given the time of day and they quoted like they have a point that is relevant here.

If I were running this thread those screeds of worthless shit would've been nuked decades ago. They add nothing to no one's life.

InB4 'free speech'.

And if thousands of memes and words were devoted to hamsters or underfloor heating systems with similar tedious venom that would get the boot too.
8105  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain job opportunities are skyrocketing on: April 18, 2018, 02:05:10 PM
Considering nothing blockchain related has ever made a profit and probably won't for years to come, how long are all these posts going to last? As long as the VC or ICO money lasts I presume.

If I were hunting for a job in this area I'd only really consider exchanges or gambling sites as they're only consistent earners. For everything else I'd expect my marching orders as soon as I'd furnished my desk.
8106  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-04-18] Suspect From Iceland Bitcoin Miner Theft Escapes Prison on: April 18, 2018, 02:02:46 PM
The average Scandinavian jail could probably charge $200 a night to tourists from elsewhere so this is hardly a shocker. He probably told the guards he was nipping out for a curry and they wished him an enjoyable meal. And paid for it.
8107  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Please. who can help me? on: April 18, 2018, 01:39:39 PM
Who is your wallet provider? Depending on who it is there may be an automated way of claiming it directly from the wallet.

Let us know and then you'll get an answer. Your BCH will be waiting out there somewhere.
8108  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Lightning Network ideal for in-game currency in MMO games? on: April 18, 2018, 01:34:34 PM
Now that the "expensive" part is solve there is still volatility left to handle. This businesses care more about getting their full cut done but when Bitcoin starts falling down from 20,000$ it looks like they it is not achievable for them. Remember they are still basing their games off the dollar and sometimes they are getting lesser after the payment is done. This is what other businesses have to risk if they want to accept cryptocurrencies as a mode of payment.

The in game earnings are the domain of the players, not the service provider. They'll always charge in dollars as that's what their outgoings are too.

But you're also right. I'm sure many a player would go squealing to them. That's why it makes more sense to create something from scratch by the players and for the players who understand what the deal is from the start.

If a corporate game included crypto they'd rapidly find themselves becoming some sort of exchange and that's a head ache no one needs.

My real name is satoshi nakamoto and I can't even get a free lunch. I'm not saying it's racism but it's racism.

Your work is done, grandad. Now push off and leave it to the cool kids.

My real name is Rosenberg Waterstein. Do your worst.

My birth name is Halal Al-Jihad and I'm still very surprised at the easy ride I get here.

I would love to see the raffle to end all raffles
]

256 tickets at 0.5 btc each?

Surely it's a 1000 BTC coin or go home.

And 0.5 as a punt is pretty hefty. I can't think of too many going for it. At the very minimum as a consolation for not winning I'd want to spend a month inside Mike Caldwell.
8112  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BitBond is it safe to use this lending service? on: April 17, 2018, 09:51:28 PM
The video identification procedure is manditory for all users who want to become active on the platform.

Can you tell us what the process is when someone defaults? ID is all well and good. That doesn't do anything to get someone's money back though it's certainly a start.
8113  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Lightning Network ideal for in-game currency in MMO games? on: April 17, 2018, 09:42:55 PM
I think the LN is definetely a good way for realizing such a MMO currency system.

But i doubt wether this is what game publisher want.
They could simply use a centralized system (e.g. buy ingame currency with btc) to earn more from people who aren't even going to spend every last 'cent'.
It is definetely more lucrative for them to realize it that way than using a decentralized system.

At the current state the LN is not ready yet. It is still in beta and still has to be proven stable and secure before it is going to be used for 'mainstream' payments.

I could well imagine a game that did build itself around a decentralised currency becoming a monstrous success. It would instantly open itself up to a whole new breed of players and spawn a thriving in game economy that would morph into something truly transformative.

Current game developers are pretty dim to discount this as a selling point. Then again they could still act as gatekeepers and have undue influence over players and their ability to earn and trade. They'd wield far too much power.

We'll probably have to wait until there are open source and collectively hosted and maintained artificial environments before the potential is there, but when it is it's going to be amazing to witness.
8114  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-04-16] Coinbase Acquires Earn.com for an Estimated $100 Million on: April 17, 2018, 09:32:24 PM
It's probably more of a brand and market extension than something actually meant to book profits with. If Coinbase was purely interested in profits, they could use that capital for their ETF fund and yield 100x more years later.

This is an area that really intrigues me. No doubt there'll be vastly huger returns in simply parking the money in coins but they must all be looking at 10-20 years in the future when I could well imagine Coinbase being bigger than Jesus if they play it right.

I'd love to know the proportion of VC funding that produces an actual return. I presume it's a minuscule percentage but the winners must win huge.

And there must be someone somewhere keeping track of the VC investments in crypto so far. I'm sure it would make for seriously ugly reading.
8115  Economy / Speculation / Re: Barclays considering starting a cryptocurrency trading desk on: April 17, 2018, 09:27:02 PM
We had similar rumours about Goldman Sachs starting a cryptocurrency desk, but that went nowhere. Established banks have a huge reputation risk associated with cryptocurrency desks. Would you trust someone with your money if they lost a huge amount of money in crypto trading? Regulators won't look too kindly at such businesses as well.

That's why they'll probably only permit accredited investors and VCs. They're professional losers of money. Have you checked how much many a hedge fund has set on fire? Losing vast amounts is par for the course.

And volatility is often actively sought. There are ETFs that were custom built to be as volatile as they could possibly make them.
8116  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-04-16] Coinbase Acquires Earn.com for an Estimated $100 Million on: April 17, 2018, 09:17:32 PM
Don't get it. In what world do these people live?

21 took over $100 million of someone else's money and came up with a Raspberry Pi with a bit of software on it. They probably sold a few hundred.

How far would you get in the real business world with a track record like that? I wonder when the crypto and internet based stuff will ever bear a relation to reality. The day must be coming.
8117  Economy / Speculation / Re: Barclays considering starting a cryptocurrency trading desk on: April 17, 2018, 03:16:01 PM
The real litmus test regarding their commitment will be their upcoming banking partnership with Coinbase. That's the first time a major crypto business has been able to access the faster payments network in the UK.

If they dangle it for a short while and then pull it I wouldn't be too confident of any of their other plans in the future.
8118  Economy / Collectibles / Re: My loaded 100 BTC Casascius Bearer Bar on: April 17, 2018, 03:09:15 PM
Lots and lots of enthusiasm... apart from the person trying to sell it. I would not be bursting with keenosity to do that either.

How many raffles have there been on here previously and how successful were they?
8119  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-04-13] Billionaire Tim Draper Sets $250,000 Bitcoin Price Target for 2022 on: April 16, 2018, 10:30:03 PM
well he certainly has a vested interest . . .

"In 2014, Draper made headlines after buying 30,000 bitcoins for $600 apiece"

And his $10,000 prediction all the way back then turned out to be on the money.

Timing aside, $10,000 was a relatively risk free prediction to make, albeit still very ambitious. $10,000 is high but still a long way from world beating. I never understood why it was the dream figure for so many people. A $160-170 billion market cap is of course huge but still not all that epic in global terms.

$250,000 is serious shit but it could be argued that the haul from $0 to $10,000 was the hard and tenuous part.
8120  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price raised by $1000 within one hour. Is it a good signal? on: April 16, 2018, 09:58:42 PM
The more violent the move the less inclined I'd be to trust it, especially when it's in a market as uncertain as this one. Amateur and FOMO money has probably vacated and now all that's left is bots and whales all trying to fuck each other over.

If it can rise that rapidly there's absolutely nothing stopping it going just as fast in the opposite direction.
