Exert pressure on them lazy-ass AV makers for failing the due dilligence.
Whine and bitch about cgminer being erroneously flagged as malware until they fix their virus definitions.
842  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Legal implications of coopting organizational computer systems. on: December 03, 2011, 11:39:54 AM
Let's start with a couple of facts:
(A) The hardware and software an IT person runs for their employer is their employer's property.
(B) Touching a machine you have no business touching (installing programs, accessing/copying/modifying data) IS illegal.
Can you answer your question based on (A) and (B) ?

Did you ask permission to install the bitcoin mining software? If you didn't and are found out not only will you lose your job, you might be sued for damages as well.

Even if you did ask and were granted permission, you're still on the hook if you misrepresented or failed to mention the ramifications of running the mining software.
These would have to include at the very least:
 - significant increase in power consumption, possibly to the point where it degrades the system's availability in the event of a power outage. The overloaded UPS might fall flat on its face...
 - significant heat generation, further increasing power consumption by making air conditioning to run more aggressively.
 - significant component load, influencing the system's MTBF time and longevity.
 - the necessity for the aforementioned system to be internet-connected and actively sending/receiving data while mining bitcoins.

Quote
and since BTCs are not genuinely recognized as currency (yet) there is no conflict of interest (eg; the hypothetical IT guy is not generatig "true" income through the use of other people's hardware)

Don't kid yourself, there is. What you are doing is, using your employer's resources you generate additional income for yourself,  no matter whether you receive it as cash, bitcoins, scamcoins, crapcoins, or KFC coupon codes for that matter.

To reiterate all I just said, ARE YOU MAD or so desperate?!?
Bitcoin miners belong nowhere near your employer's machines.
You will lose your job and possibly get sued.

i am facing problems with the pool last few days. intermittently my miner is falling back to backup pool. anybody else facing the same problem?

Yeah, and I've been talking to Luke about that. There have been another DOS attacks against Eligius. To mitigate the attacks, Luke scheduled automatic restart for the vulnerable pushpool daemon.
We really should consider donating a bitcoin or two to Luke to see a better fix, guys; show him some bitcoin love ^^ I already did.
844  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Feature Request: Splash Screen on: November 26, 2011, 02:56:32 PM
On my Windows7 laptop, bitcoin begins with the disk IO housekeeping stuff and it's a few seconds before the window launches.
The last thing I want is for a splash screen to get in my way :<
If this feature gets implemented I kindly request it be user-configurable in the Options menu.

I might just be in possession of a couple of unspent bitcoins rattling around in my wallet willing to do some good.
Count me in.

Don't expect me to be monitoring this thread constantly though; a PM reminder might be in order when need arises.
846  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER CPU/GPU miner overclock monitor fanspeed in C linux/windows/osx 2.0.8 on: November 23, 2011, 11:24:03 AM
100% CPU Usage Bug for me under Linux with 4 x 5870 with Catalyst 11.11 fixed !

Finally.

Not for me.

Ubuntu 11.10 64 bits
Catalyst 11.11
CGMiner 2.0.8

CGMiner consumes 120% of my CPU (core2 duo).

I'll fallback to Ubuntu 11.04 + Catalyst 11.6 + AMDAPPSDK v2.4 and CGMiner 2.0.6.

I've noticed this behaviour when using the opencl headers provided by debian and the ICD provided with the 11.11 drivers (package amd-opencl-icd in debian). Installed the app sdk from http://forums.amd.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=390&threadid=125792 instead and the CPU usage is down to ~10%. (This is on a 64bit debian testing with the 11.11 driver from the repos.)

Confirmed! No more CPU hogging unless debian's headers are installed alongside amd's 11.11 drivers.

Compared to 11.6 driver I also noticed a slight performance improvement of just over 1% [HMash/s] on my VLIW4 cards. No discernible hashrate change for VLIW5.
Moreover, the power draw seems to have dropped by 3% but I've been only able to measure power draw for one mining rig - the rest are off-site.
Can anyone confirm a slight power draw decrease going from 11.6 to 11.11 driver?

UPDATE:
Power draw returned to 11.6 levels a few hours after I'd written this post, presumably after whe PSU warmed up sufficiently to affect its efficiency.
11.11 allows me to overclock my cards higher than 11.6 did, e.g. an ASUS 6950 DCII which I could only squeeze 930 MHz of, has been working fine for over a week at 945 MHz.

+1, sounds great.
848  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New mining rig with Asus EAH6950 - Temps / GPU Core / Shaders Questions! on: November 03, 2011, 07:13:56 PM
I have it at 20% more power in cataclyst also... that's overvolting i believe.

Do you think you could check whether changing the Powertune in catalyst drivers actually impacts your hashing speed or power consumption?
I have a few EAH6950 cards myself and although the driver reports success, the powertune value has no effect whatsoever on any of them.

As to how one overclocks on linux, along with the catalyst driver you installed a little utility called aticonfig which is able to change gpu/memory clocks or fan speed.

Alternatively, do as DeathAndTaxes suggested: cgminer is a GREAT miner (possibly the best?) and it integrates mining, overclocking and fan control in one neat package.
849  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 6950 poor performance on: November 02, 2011, 10:17:40 PM
318? I'd call it close enough for government job, would you agree? ^^
You might try OC'ing it a bit, just because it's a decent card you got there.

These paramters are used for fine-tuning the miner to your card.
The -w parameter is the work size which can range from 64 to 256. Generally, for a 6950 the optimal value is 128.
-v enables vectors. You DO want to do this.
-f is for tuning the mining aggression (basically, the load on your card); the LOWER walue here, the more aggressive the mining.

FYI, GUIminer is but a frontend - the actual miner (down below the pretty gui) is, in your case, poclbm.
Below you can see the current source code for poclbm, all possible parameters, their default values and meaning are explained there:
https://github.com/m0mchil/poclbm/blob/076f85c63d1ce21c81695eed9b60eb778a0f1ade/poclbm.py

Good luck!

PS. In your first post, you were like "i don't want to mess too much"
After a while you added the "-v -f30 -w128" string
Dude, by this rate tomorrow you'll be building a dedicated mining rig Smiley
850  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 6950 poor performance on: November 02, 2011, 09:20:27 PM
Miner and parameters?
Operating system?
Is it a dedicated rig or your workstation? A web browser running some flash will totally demolish your mining speed.

EDIT: You should be getting at least 310 Mhash out of this thing using any contemporary and well-tuned miner if it's a dedicated mining card.

@trogdorjw73

Could be worse: registering an account with forums.overclockers.co.uk involved one of the mods MANUALLY enabling new accounts last time I checked.
THREE business days after my filling out the registration form, the mod replied he didn't much care about the numeral in my forum handle; "spam account" it looked like to him xD
I get it: their forums, their regulations but it sure looks like mods shooting themselves in the foot.
852  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 6950/6970 owners what settings do you use for mining?! on: November 02, 2011, 09:04:34 PM
Have you tried voltage tweaking in Asus SmartDoctor? I have this same card, and have been able to mess with voltages quite readily.

While I realize what I'm saying ain't exactly politically correct,
I'm running a serious bitcoin mining operation here, not some windows based bsod-powerhouse Smiley

Thanks anyway Electricbees, you've made a valid point.

Tried messing around with the bios using RBE but nothing good came of that, just a bit of time wasted.
Anyhow, the ASUS it not THAT bad of a 6950... a half decent choice owing to an efficient cooler.

EDIT: Bees, is it the 1GB or 2 GB version that you have? Since a large amount of ram  on a gpu is actually a downside when mining is concerned, I'm guessing the 1GB version?
853  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to get out of here on: November 02, 2011, 06:13:50 PM
This 5 post rule is totally annoying. You have to make 5 BS posts to be able to make some serious ones.
Viva la spam!

Great way winning hearts and minds, wouldn't you agree?
If you feel you have a valid point to make just register with our forum, write a buncha nonsensical posts in the sandbox, wait a few hours,...
I've seen worse regulations but not by much.

Do you guys think that Capitalism is going to fail?

In its current form, I sure hope so - when we've invented some better system.
All the well-known flaws of greed-powered capitalism exacerbate during the crisis.
Just look how well Greece is doing... their central bank thought it was totally cool to keep borrowing, borrowing, borrowing money to the point where they can't afford to pay the interest :<

Heh heh, the YouTube videos of those things in action are hilarious.
Might get me a couple for Christmas - as long as our local commie firearm regulations don't prohibit such toys, that is :<

Hey, I'm me ^^

Been lurking around for awhile; never felt the urge to register... the moment I needed to post I'm relegated to "noob central".
Sweet...

Anyhow, well met guys.
857  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 6950/6970 owners what settings do you use for mining?! on: November 02, 2011, 05:31:25 PM
ASUS EAH6950 DCII

GPU clock / mem clock: 935 MHz / 810 MHz
Enough fan rotation to keep it below 80° celsius (48..52% for single card, up to 65% in a mining rig).

Shadermod not possible (shaders disabled in hardware).
Voltage tweaking not possible (no software I tried was able to change that).
Powertune non functional (driver reports success but neither power draw, temps, or hash rate actually change)

Able to squeeze at least 385 MHash from each of these cards.
