Wilikon, the actual toll is much higher than the six soldiers which you have cited. You should also add up those soldiers, who died while trying to capture the five Taliban / Al Qaeda leaders.
Some numbers even go up to 14 soldiers killed, more or less linked to him. I just want to link stuff anyone can double check easily. If I ever stumble upon all those names then I will update the thread, eventually.

It seems like the man may have been a little nuts even before he left his base. Nevertheless, he's clearly a hero. Like his parents he was always opposed to American imperialism and supported the struggle of the Afghan people for freedom. The only reason he enlisted to begin with was because he thought he could help the Afghan people that way, and that is also the reason he left the base that night. Unfortunately, it seems the Taliban (who are almost as bad as the Americans) preferred to use him as a bargaining chip rather than let him join the cause. In a sense he really is a traitor to the US, its army and its imperialist program, and for that he should be proud.

An "editathon" is actually a Wikipedia concept that is not unique to this OFR collaboration. Wikipedia is crowd-edited by design, so an "editathon" is often held by experienced editors to help provide training to new editors, as well as to accomplish the basic purpose, to "edit and improve a specific topic or type of content." Although this is a first-of-its-kind event for the National Archives, it is not the first time the Wikipedia community has hooked up with federal employees. In May last year when furloughs were hitting some government workers, the D.C. chapter of Wikimedia held a "Furloughed Feds Workshop", a "training seminar and edit-a-thon for federal employees interested in learning more on how to edit Wikipedia." http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/feds-collaborate-wikipedia-editors-improve-wikipedia-entries-related-government-publications_794261.html

This sucks because any kid dumb enough to join the military can formally quit and go home after they get in and see what's really going on.
Completely false. Please edit your post to delete this misinformation. It would be more constructive to add to the discussion links and proofs of that "misinformation". Unless you have forum post deletion super powers...

Researchers at the University of Illinois and Arizona State University examined six decades of hurricane death rates according to gender, spanning 1950 and 2012. Of the 47 most damaging hurricanes, the female-named hurricanes produced an average of 45 deaths compared to 23 deaths in male-named storms, or almost double the number of fatalities. (The study excluded Katrina and Audrey, outlier storms that would skew the model). The difference in death rates between genders was even more pronounced when comparing strongly masculine names versus strongly feminine ones. “[Our] model suggests that changing a severe hurricane’s name from Charley … to Eloise … could nearly triple its death toll,” the study says. Sharon Shavitt, study co-author and professor of marketing at the University of Illinois, says the results imply an “implicit sexism”; that is, we make decisions about storms based on the gender of their name without even knowing it. “When under the radar, that’s when it [the sexism] has the potential to influence our judgments,” Shavitt said. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2014/06/02/female-named-hurricanes-kill-more-than-male-because-people-dont-respect-them-study-finds/

Obama administration targets coal with controversial emissions regulationThe Obama administration took aim at the coal industry on Monday by mandating a 30 percent cut in carbon emissions at fossil fuel-burning power plants by 2030 — despite claims the regulation will cost nearly a quarter-million jobs a year and force plants across the country to close. The controversial regulation is one of the most sweeping efforts to tackle global warming by this or any other administration. The 645-page rule, expected to be final next year, is a centerpiece of President Obama’s climate change agenda, and a step that the administration hopes will get other countries to act when negotiations on a new international treaty resume next year. While the plan drew praise from environmental groups, the coal industry was immediately suspect. Bill Bissett, president of the Kentucky Coal Association, said he’s “certain that it will be very bad news for states like Kentucky who mine and use coal to create electricity.” The draft regulation sidesteps Congress, where Obama’s Democratic allies have failed to pass a so-called “cap-and-trade” plan to limit such emissions. Under the plan, states could have until 2017 to submit a plan to cut power plant pollution, and 2018 if they join with other states to tackle the problem, according to the EPA’s proposal. States are expected to be allowed to require power plants to make changes such as switching from coal to natural gas or enact other programs to reduce demand for electricity and produce more energy from renewable sources. They also can set up pollution-trading markets as some states already have done to offer more flexibility in how plants cut emissions.http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/06/02/obama-to-announce-rule-to-limit-emissions-from-fossil-burning-plants-part-his/

Sudan Backtracks On Releasing Christian Woman Sentenced To Death For Refusing To Convert To Islam…There was confusion last night over whether a mother facing the death penalty in Sudan for abandoning her religious faith would be freed soon. The case of Meriam Ibrahim sparked international condemnation from world leaders earlier this month after a Sudanese court ruled the then heavily pregnant woman would face the death penalty for refusing to renounce her Christian faith. The court ruled she was to be given 100 lashes and then hanged after she had given birth. Ms Ibrahim (27) was brought up as an Orthodox Christian by her mother, and married a Christian, but the court ruled she should be regarded as Muslim because it had been her father’s faith – a charged she denied. “I am a Christian. I did not convert from Islam,” she told the Haj Yousif court in Khartoum. In refusing to renounce her faith, her Christian marriage in 2011 was annulled and she was sentenced to death for apostasy. Sex outside a ‘lawful relationship’ is also regarded as adultery under Sudanese law. Over the weekend, the BBC reported that a Sudanese foreign ministry official had said Ms Ibrahim, a doctor, who gave birth to a girl while in prison earlier this week, will be freed from custody “in a few days’ time”. Abdullahi Alazreg, an under-secretary at the foreign ministry, reportedly said that Sudan guaranteed religious freedom and was committed to protecting the woman. But the foreign ministry issued a clarification on Sunday, saying that only the judicial system could rule on the case.“The defence team of the concerned citizen has appealed the verdict… and if the appeals court rules in her favour, she will be released,” the ministry said. http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/world-news/confusion-over-news-meriam-ibrahim-to-be-freed-in-sudan-30321145.html

One of the soldiers in his unit sent a $500 donation to this podcast so they would read his letter on air. In the letter he says Berghahl deserted his unit during a shift change, and that 12 U.S. troops died trying to find him. ... In the letter he says Berghahl deserted his unit during a shift change...
That's the weird part. Was he deserting? Where would he go? Surely he knew that he could not get out of the country on his own. I wonder if he had some kind of breakdown or psychotic episode that inspired him to leave base. It was a crazy move. His intention was clear before "vanishing". His father gave him the push when replying (in all cap) "obey your conscious" like it is said in the NY Post article.

[...] “I’m thinking of joining the Army,” he told his folks after already having signed up. Bergdahl’s dream was to help Afghan villagers rebuild their lives and learn to defend themselves, his dad told the magazine. “The whole ‘COIN’ thing,” Bob explained, referring to America’s strategy of counter-insurgency. “We were given a fictitious picture, an artificially created picture of what we were doing in Afghanistan,” the dad said. Bowe Bergdahl would detail his disillusionment with the Afghanistan campaign in an email to his parents three days before he went missing. “I am sorry for everything here,” he wrote. “These people need help, yet what they get is the most conceited country in the world telling them that they are nothing and that they are stupid.” Bergdahl also complained about fellow soldiers. The battalion commander was a “conceited old fool,” he said, and the only “decent” sergeants, planning to leave the platoon “as soon as they can,” told the privates — Bergdahl then among them — “to do the same.” “I am ashamed to be an American. And the title of US soldier is just the lie of fools,” he concluded. “I am sorry for everything. The horror that is America is disgusting.” Bob Bergdahl responded in an email: “OBEY YOUR CONSCIENCE!” One night, after finishing a guard-duty shift, Bowe Bergdahl asked his team leader whether there would be a problem if he left camp with his rifle and night-vision goggles — to which the team leader replied “yes.” Bergdahl then returned to his bunker, picked up a knife, water, his diary and a camera, and left camp, according to Rolling Stone. The next morning, he was reported missing, and later that day, a drone and four fighter jets began to search for him. http://nypost.com/2014/05/31/the-bizarre-tale-of-americas-last-known-pow/http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/mixed-reaction-to-bergdahls-recovery-by-service-members-who-consider-him-a-deserter/2014/06/01/3713e3ce-e9c5-11e3-b98c-72cef4a00499_story.html![](https://ip.bitcointalk.org/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FGFqIugg.jpg&t=663&c=-ZWY6YFhIS0r8Q) http://youtu.be/XeUqBNtWpig

Reporters and politicians rushed to follow their lead, and discussions about girls’ education and the crimes of Boko Haram at last punctured public indifference.
In America, another horrific crime unleashed a gush of online discourse. This time it was a 22-year-old man on a quest for what he called his “day of retribution,” when he would torture and kill “good-looking people” before launching a “war on women” to punish girls and women who he said had “starved (him) of sex.” The misogyny in the killer’s more than 100-page diatribe led women to begin using the #Yesallwomen hashtag to push forward a conversation on Twitter and Facebook and Tumbler about the rarely discussed though frequently experienced issues of violence against women, from sexual assault to harassment to domestic brutality.http://hotair.com/archives/2014/05/31/cnn-op-ed-manages-703-words-on-honor-killings-without-mentioning-muslims-but-ties-to-ucsb-killings/
