901  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: solo mining ltc, is luck still involved? on: December 08, 2013, 07:55:07 PM
well thats very true, however im going to take the gamble.

heat issues are not a problem for me, as I have the gpus watercooled and connected to a 1080 rad and a water chiller.
902  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: solo mining ltc, is luck still involved? on: December 08, 2013, 07:48:27 PM
this is what most people say, its an impossibility, but then you do hear of people willing to take a risk, and they hit blocks against all odds Cheesy

at current diff my expected block time is 73 days,

if i could get one in half that, that would be great, at current diff pool mining would be under 20 ltc,

its risky but i think its still a possibility,

to anyone who is intrested in how i get on, watch this thread and see if i can become one of those odds beating solos
903  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: solo mining ltc, is luck still involved? on: December 08, 2013, 07:27:30 PM
cheers guys, i feel like taking a gamble haha,

does time come into account with finding a block, eg is it possible to find one after a day, or a week, or will it technically take day 30 days etc..
904  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / solo mining ltc, is luck still involved? on: December 08, 2013, 07:16:57 PM
hi all,

I am currently mining ltc in a pool with 1500 hashes,

i was thinking on takeing a gamble and solo mine for a few weeks,

I am just wondering if a block can still be found with the hashes i have, im not taking probability here but all i want to know is it still possible to find one even if the chances are very low.

Your right. Everything went smooth. Funds in new address. Off to the vault tomorrow. Thanks for your help
907  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: public key visable on: December 05, 2013, 04:20:36 PM
***edit**** its gone through, just took little while, phew haha, sending large amounts of savings is heart pumping, off to the vault the wallet goes Cheesy

just checked my old address in block explorer, and the balance is still in it, minus the tx fees,

i must have done this wrong?
908  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: public key visable on: December 05, 2013, 04:16:22 PM
quick update from me,

ok so I created a new receiving address in my open wallet, and i sent my balance of my wallet to it,I also added to 0.0005 fee,

I got a popup in the taskbar saying payment to self.

my balance is still showing what is was, minus the fee, but in the transaction list i have a n/a and 0 confirms,

checking the new address i created in block explorer does not show any funds,

have i done it wrong?
909  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 0.8.5 crawling sync on: December 05, 2013, 02:26:13 PM
deleting the peers.dat and the db log sorted it for me, but i was coming from a backed up copy of the block chain..
910  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: how is a backup of the blockchain done? on: December 05, 2013, 11:21:29 AM
Recent blocks are far larger and contain more transactions than the early ones, your client will likely crawl back to this slow speed over time.

thanks for reply. I managed to get the backup i done working and synced in 5 mins, I deleted the peers.dat and debug.log as per advice from another member.

thanks
911  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 0.8.5 crawling sync on: December 05, 2013, 11:18:03 AM
the max connections i seem to get with 0.8.5 is 8, with 0.8.1 i was getting about 28, on the same computer. and with version 0.8.1 it would only have taken me moments to sync the 9 days

anyone any ideas?
Hitting the 8 connection limit lets me believe that you are behind a nat device. You need to port forward to the computer running Bitcoin. It's possible that the IP address of your computer has changed via DHCP if you previously set up port forwarding, and now inbound connections are being sent to the bit bucket.

Only one copy of Bitcoin can run well behind a consumer router, as you need to let port 8333 inbound to only one machine.

this could be slowing me down alright, I have open nat as my line is a business one, but i have the nat secured in the router and not open, I have upnp enabled though and i can see the bitcoin client in the list of upnp devices in the router.

do you think i still need to port forward?

Delete the peers.dat and debug.log files..

this did the trick, awesome! thanks very much dude! zipped along the 9 days old in a matter of 5 mins
913  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / how is a backup of the blockchain done? on: December 04, 2013, 10:33:11 PM
hi all,

I am just wondering what is the way to go about backing up the blockchain?

everything has been going great for me until i upgraded to 0.8.5

prior to my upgrade I backed up the whole bitcoin folder in the hidden \appdata directory, uninstalled 0.8.1, installed 0.8.5 and then copied over all the files that i had backed up over, i then used the -rescan command.

bitcoin=qt loaded up but my blockchain is 9 days out of date, so i leave it running only to come back and see it still stuck on 9 days sync, its processing about 1 block every 1-2 mins, I initially thought what the hell something up there so i went through the whole checking firewalls, connections to nodes etc, everything checks out ok.

so i think then maybe its just the network so i leave it running for a few more hours, still wont sync, or at the best at a horrendus speed of 3 every 5 mins.

i then deleted everything in the \appdata and let bitcoin create everything again, blockchain is now downloading at the speed it should be processing about 1000\min.

so I would like to hear from others how they backup the chain and restore it when a new version of bitcoin-qt comes out.

does the blockchain have to be re-downloaded in full at every version change which you cant use any sort of previous backup of it ?

thanks

i have my block chain backed up, but its 9 days old, the last time i updated the chain was on the old version 0.8.1 9 days ago,

i decided to install the new version 0.8.5, so i deleted all the 0.8.1 files, installed 0.8.5 and copied my backed up chain over,

started bitcoin and it went through the veryifing blocks etc and opened up, the problem is it is syncing at a standstill, maybe 1 block ever 1-2 mins.

on 0.8.1 i had no issues syncing, it zipped along in chunks of 100's

915  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / 0.8.5 crawling sync on: December 04, 2013, 05:17:56 PM
hi all,

i just upgraded from 0.8.1, i cant seem to get any momentum going with the 0.8.5 version regarding syncing,

its taking me almost 1 hour to sync 1 day out of a 9 day old chain,

have doubled checked everything, upnp is enabled on router, firewall exception, even tried with firewall disabled.

the max connections i seem to get with 0.8.5 is 8, with 0.8.1 i was getting about 28, on the same computer. and with version 0.8.1 it would only have taken me moments to sync the 9 days

anyone any ideas?

thanks very much  Cool
917  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: public key visable on: December 04, 2013, 03:58:34 PM
thanks I got it i think  Grin

create new address in the open wallet in bitcoin-qt, send all the funds to the new address i created, then for future i create a new receiving address for incoming transaction, this way i will never have the public key revealed for my stored bitcoins,

thanks
918  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: public key visable on: December 04, 2013, 03:39:36 PM
thanks for the replies,

@ CIYAM Open this is what I was concerned about, so does this mean I need to create a new wallet? or can I just create a new address within the open wallet and send to the new address I have created? or will I need to create a new wallet altogether and send them to it.

thanks
919  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / public key visable on: December 04, 2013, 03:01:49 PM
hi everyone,

just wondering is it wise to use a wallet that the public key is visable on the block chain?

I have been using the same wallet for receiving/sending bitcoins and also to store my bitcoins, I do however have mywallet encrypted,

should i be moving my bitcoins to a new wallet everytime i send a bitcoin out of it? from what I gather the public key is only shown in the block explorer when you send anything out of your wallet, but my question is with the public key now visable on the block explorer, does that leave my wallet open for any sort of attacks etc, or is it still secured.

would seem to me that it would be a right pain to have to clear out my wallet to a new one everytime i send anything out of it.

cheers
920  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Coinotron pool hashrate problem on: December 04, 2013, 09:54:24 AM
Add -w 256 into your cgminer config. Cgminer defaults to 64 which is why you are seeing less hash in the pool.
