The sex of 20 of the people in the poll is other. lol

Wait, bitcoin has only 1% more women than hermaphrodites?

About 1,7% of humans are born hermaphrodites, we have over 5%.
Why is bitcoin so interesting for this gender?

Other includes trans-gendered people, not just hermaphrodites.

"Other" also includes people who are just fucking with the poll.   Cool
and those messing with the poll are almost certainly guys...
902  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Thai Baht (฿) has always been the most frequently used Bitcoin symbol right? on: October 07, 2012, 10:15:27 PM
i guess it's a function of the OS more than the broswer then?

Very likely.  Which means it will be years before Luke-Jr will be satisfied.

What I'd like to know is whether an OLPC system will display this alleged "standard" symbol.

I sold my iPhone 4s when I ordered the iPhone 5...and got a temp junk phone for the interim...I should see how it renders the test site...it's a modern "pre-iphone" phone with keyboard and what not...lol!

So... what reality is more material: paperbugs, cryptobugs, or goldbugs?

Goldbugs obviously, and a growing number are taking a position in Bitcoin.

Why is this hard for some to accept?
I don't think it's an issue of acceptance...it's an issue of fact vs. opinion...
904  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Countdown til October 12th on: October 07, 2012, 10:12:33 PM

Don't people typically delegate most of this type of communication to their lawyers?  I mean, don't people just typically say here's the info for my lawyer -- talk to them?  Is the contact info for his lawyer known?

Not until there's something very specific that the lawyer can handle.  Lawyers charge for every phone call they take and every email they answer.  Unless you've got unlimited funds with which to pay your lawyer, you're not going to pay him to take 500 phone calls telling people the same thing you've already told them.  Bear in mind that attorney-client privilege severely limits the information that your lawyer is able to disckose to others, too - even if your lawyer knows exactly what is going on, that doesn't mean he can legally disclose that information to your creditors.
Good point...it's the famous and rich who pass everything to their lawyers...

Have you successfully rendered this symbol on a system using UTF-8?
Yep, in fact I'm pretty sure these forums use UTF-8 only.

Edit: Actually, looking at the source, I see the forum is choosing ISO-8859-1 encoding, which doesn't work with Unicode at all. This is likely the reason why many people are having technical problems.
If that's the case then the Bitcoin wiki has the same problem.
No, the wiki seems to select UTF-8 properly.

We've already established from the numerous responses to you earlier in this thread that you're one of the exceptions who can see this symbol, you're not in the majority.  Not by a long stretch.

I expect (and intend) to use a symbol which will display on the widest range of hardware and software available globally.  This means taking into account older systems and operating systems.

So as much as you may wish it weren't so, both ฿ and Ƀ still have an edge.

It would be nice to have an educated, well thought out, and reasonable estimate of the amount of time it would take for a large fraction of users to have the BTC symbol work (and for someone to fill in all the assumptions with reasonable guesses)...

Think so...why?
909  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Physical device to generate public/private key pairs on: October 07, 2012, 10:02:22 PM
Their SDKs are payware and their binaries must be signed.

But the majority of the work isn't hardware dependent.

If you can come up with a console app that will run under Linux, perhaps takes some entropy or a 32-byte private key and prints a single bitcoin address to the console, I can convert it to run on the credit card machine.  I can also provide the part that sends QR codes to the printer, given just the string to encode.

Importantly, it can't depend on having the whole openssl suite available, nor any libraries.  Whatever it is has to be pretty much self-contained, sort of like bitaddress.org is completely self contained.

I just don't understand the inner workings of the EC math to go at it myself, but if that part were self-contained I'd have no problem producing the binary.

I'm not sufficiently skilled to do the work with what I know now...although I'm sure I could figure it out, I haven't the time -- and surely there are people around here who know how to make it happen.  Just seems like a good idea and a good money maker for someone who can pull it off...

wow...we have about as many "others" as women...i'm betting 90% of those have a Y chromosome...

912  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Securing your savings wallet on: October 07, 2012, 09:49:29 PM
Well I finally became a bit security conscious and have searched for anything I can find about how to create a secure savings wallet and I really don't like any of the answers available.

I don't like paper wallets because I don't want to print anything on a paper and I don't like liveCDs because I don't want to download the entire blockchain every time I want to spend from my savings wallet I also don't like a brainwallet because it exposes me to the risk of being robbed while entering my pass phrase when trying to spend from it.

Is there really no option to simply have a USB drive that I can pop in, before doing so restart my laptop, boot the USB and have a ready to go client and wallet with a connection ready and free of any worry of getting hacked?

These are my conditions for what I'd like to use:

-I want it in a digital form, preferably on an encrypted USB stick
-I want to be able to use it with my primary and only laptop (needing to reboot my laptop is fine)
-I want to be able to at least send myself an email with an address where to send the coins to and be safe doing so or use some other way of copy/paste
-I want to spend from my savings wallet without having to download the blockchain
buy a casascius BTC1 coin, peal it, take a digital picture of the private key and first bits, copy the jpeg to a secure/encrypted SD card (easy to do on Mountain Lion)...use MtGox to cash in the private key and send to a new address...
913  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Thai Baht (฿) has always been the most frequently used Bitcoin symbol right? on: October 07, 2012, 09:43:33 PM
I made a test page for the BTC symbol in Unicode since this forum forces a non-Unicode encoding.

This is what I see:

what OS and browser?

It's a simple declarative statement backed up by a mere glance at material reality.
So... what reality is more material: paperbugs, cryptobugs, or goldbugs?
I have your answer: yes.
915  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Thai Baht (฿) has always been the most frequently used Bitcoin symbol right? on: October 07, 2012, 09:39:41 PM
looks the same on safari and chrome on mountain lion.

I missed this...when/where did pirate say that?

Pirateat40:
freenode.net #btcst

Content from Link:
Q: What's going on?
A: In short, one of my largest clients decided they would make things difficult for me.  In the heat of the moment I made a move to secure the USD backing the coins when they were not returned and has made things much more difficult.

Q: Where have you been?
A: I realize not having information is annoying and somewhat concerning. I’ve stopped responding publicly until hard information was available due to some legal concerns that developed.  Once the attorneys (both mine and my clients) got involved, everything slowed down while everything was sorted out.

Q: When will we get our coins?
A: As of today the earliest estimated time that coins can begin moving is Friday, Oct 12th.  I can only keep you updated on this date as I have more information.

Q: Why did you require PPT operators to submit their account holders information?
A: There’re a few reasons for doing this.  The largest of which was to remove the PPT operators from the added risk of their users claiming they were not paid once the main account was paid. The other reasons can not be disclosed.

Q: What is going to happen with bond issuers?
A: Since bonds can be traded and have taken a large hit due to the closure of BTCST, I’ll be working with the bond issuers to find a solution that best suits their investors.

Also...

Those looking to file a suit against me or BTCST will not be eligible for repayment.

GPUMAX has never been associated with BTCST nor have any of it’s partners.  GPUMAX shared a wallet with one of the BTCST operating wallets for security and is now running it’s own secured wallet which is no longer associated with BTCST.

Threats are taken seriously by myself and my attorney.  A few of you will find out how serious I mean.

That’s all for now, I’ll be providing updates here when more information is available.

Thanks

I have $50 worth of those...I just stocked up on $100 in coins to help teach my 2 and 3 year old about money...along with this gizmo I just ordered...

You should have bought them from me instead of from Ebay. You'll be sorry when you notice you're bitcoin account is missing $800.
Lol!  I'll let you know how it works out.

looks like $12 for a used credit card machine...I found a PC/USB cable for $50...I've yet to find a programming manual...
920  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Physical device to generate public/private key pairs on: October 07, 2012, 09:21:53 PM
I keep pitching credit card machines for this, since obsolete ones are available cheaply, they run C/C++, and have a satisfactory sized screen and printer for the purpose.
That's not a bad idea.  ...off to ebay...
