I create this topic because I challenged franky1 to join a civil discussion with all arguments in one place: @franky1: If I create a self-moderated topic (Lauda called me Switzerland for being neutral; I won't delete any of your posts, but I will call you out if you go off-topic), are you willing to engage? I expect it will be "you vs a couple of other users", but from what I've seen, you can handle yourself. I would like to discuss your points on LN that I've seen in far too many different topics, and it would be nice if we can reach consensus on at least part of the discussion. My invitation was accepted by franky1: i can engage. and out of respect i will even take my own advice and step back from the computer between posts and take some breathing time between posts, and avoid (as i see other do)just hitting reply to rage reply. if others can do the same. and answer without shining their bias/advertising PR stance of utopia, and respond rationally and thinking outside their small box. then great
it could actually lead to some proper dialogue. Anyone else than franky1: I will delete unfriendly posts, and I will delete off-topic posts. See my unedited archive when that happens. Rules Guidelines:Please keep this topic civil. Please keep the discussion only here, and not in other topics. If there's something worth reading in another topic, quote it here instead of posting a link. Try to limit the scope: don't throw 30 different arguments in one post, it will lead to endless replies. Update: separate posts in a row aren't allowed, so making different posts for each argument won't work. BlackHatCoiner expressed my intentions much better: I want to add this as a condition: We'll speak of one topic at a time. Scalability? Scalability. Lightning's protocol? Lightning's protocol. Consensus? Consensus. This way we can clarify which are our interlocutor's disagreements and constructively (& friendly) correct them. Read everything before responding. Try to avoid duplicate replies. Newbies: read more, post less, and create an informed opinion. To consider: I removed franky1 from my ignore list. I think that's only fair considering the topic I started.
To start: I use on-chain Bitcoin, and I use Bitcoin LN. Bitcoin can work with or without LN, LN can't work without Bitcoin. I don't like high fees, as it limits adoption. I would like to see Bitcoin grow in value, userbase and number of transactions per second, and I think we need all three of those for Bitcoin to grow. How, that's up for debate. LN is a different network for a reason. it has its own usecase and niche and utility that differs from bitcoins.

What do you think about this? I think you're a bounty spammer hoping to earn Merit. Posting the same topic on 2 different boards isn't going to help you. Unlike paper currency, the value of this currency is not fixed. The value of paper currency (fiat money?) isn't fixed either. The price of cryptocurrency fluctuates constantly. The price of anything on a free market fluctuates constantly. A basically fluctuates like a stock index. What's A? investors need to keep an eye on how popular the currency they want to invest in is. Great! How much have you invested in Bitcoin? And what do you do to keep an eye on it's popularity? Since the prices of cryptocurrencies are not always the same, the price of coins often falls sharply. So far, the value of Bitcoin has risen more than it has fallen. What's your point? The investor should not be disappointed, he should wait a few more days to benefit from the investment. Or a few weeks, months or years. Or just keeps his bags of worthless shitcoins forever. How did you come up with your advice to "wait a few more days to benefit"? The amount of cryptocurrency coins and tokens is gaining popularity day by day, Some of them, yes. Others don't. You can say the same about many things. It is said that in a very short time cryptocurrency will spread worldwide Who said that? Cryptocurrency is already known in every corner of the world. What's your point? the market for cryptocurrency will expand rapidly. Are you predicting the future with absolute certainty?

After a number of years of reading franky1's posts, I have come to the conclusion that he believes what he writes. I have posted previously that I do not agree with very much of what Franky says, and I probably would not agree with most of his interpretation of facts, however, I don't think he is posting in bad faith.
If you disagree with what franky1 is saying, I would encourage you to engage in a fact-based discussion with him to try to change his mind. In doing so, you should also be open to having your mind be changed, if a sufficient fact pattern were to emerge. That sounds great, but was attempted in many topics already. If franky1 would keep his crusade in just one topic, I don't think anyone would complain about it. I'm tempted to give this one more try. There's not a forum/community I've ever been on that does tolerate these people. But that's something to cherish, not something to change! There are more than enough overly censored forums out there, and there's only one that I know of that actually allows people to express their opinion.
LN is a different network for a reason. it has its own usecase and niche and utility that differs from bitcoins. I can live with this ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) @franky1: If I create a self-moderated topic (Lauda called me Switzerland for being neutral; I won't delete any of your posts, but I will call you out if you go off-topic), are you willing to engage? I would like to discuss your points on LN that I've seen in far too many different topics, and it would be nice if we can reach consensus on at least part of the discussion. I don't think Meta is the right place to discuss the details of LN.

You can write down your private keys on a random piece of paper and it will become a paper wallet. Writing down private keys is prone to mistakes. I've seen people lose their funds because they can't decipher their own handwriting.

You may want to read Missing 10 Characters in WIF Private Key - Can I recover them?Judging by that topic, I don't think recovering 11 missing characters is (currently) very feasible, unless you've made a transaction out of the address or have a signed message (for instance to proves ownership back in the days). Both aren't very likely with paper wallets, but if you have one of those, you'll know the public key. Knowing the public key (not to be confused with the address), makes it much easier to recover the private key.

The stockmarket is overvalued and cash gets inflated away. I'm not very hopeful for any of this for the coming years, but so far Bitcoin has outperformed them. There's not really an alternative anyway.

However, when a newbie makes a question and this beast comes spitting nonsensical FUDs that bring confusion and upheaval then the thing takes another dimension. Shall you leave this unchallenged? Last time I saw it, the Newbie Full Member saw right through it and called his BS. I added a heads up: False. False. In case you didn't know yet: franky1 doesn't like LN and has been spreading lies about it for a long time. It has earned him negative feedback from 3 highly knowledgeable users, and an "informal ban" from the tech boards (meaning his posts will be deleted on sight). TL;DR: you're wasting your time trying to explain things to him. Then challenge it instead of ignoring him. People have tried. The problem with trolls is that they feed on attention. If he posts the same "opinion" in many different topics, it's useless to challenge the same thing over and over again. I have franky1 on ignore, and there's always someone who's unaware of him being an anti-LN-troll who tries it again. And if enough people add him to their ignore list, eventually his posts will remain unchallenged and someone may believe it. I'm strongly against banning people's speech just because it is in fact, or is considered to be, misinformation. Agreed. I think red tag here is uncalled for. Expressing an opinion (no matter how wrong or "FUD" it may seem to someone else) shouldn't make a user "high risk". Agreed, I think neutral would fit better. But clearly some people who know much more about Bitcoin than me think otherwise.

thing is, those old school private key paper "wallets" still work. exactly as they did 10 years ago, and will 10 years from now. nothing fancy.. just works Yeah, just like riding a horse and driving first automobiles from 1900 still works and it's nothing fancy also ![Cheesy](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif) To be honest, I don't think this is a fair comparison. While we're on the analogy of transportation, I'll add mine: paper wallets are like walking. It worked thousands of years ago, and it will work thousands of years from now. Even though there are risks involved, and even though there are much more modern and faster systems available, walking is the one thing that will always be around while many of the much newer systems (like stagecoaches) have long disappeared.

I have been monitoring the total number of funded addresses here , with the data provided by LoyceV hereTime to add Taproot addresses: I know that Taproot addresses are starting with bc1p, and Native Sewgit addresses start with bc1q. Starting today, I've added bc1p-addresses to total_number_of_funded_addresses.txt and total_number_of_funded_addresses.json: "03/01/2022":[ {"total": 39644562, "1": 23810601, "3": 8474856, "bc1q": 7342678}], "04/01/2022":[ {"total": 39631173, "1": 23822116, "3": 8429494, "bc1q": 7362835}], "05/01/2022":[ {"total": 39633563, "1": 23822618, "3": 8421989, "bc1q": 7371925, "bc1p": 17027}] } I'm curious to see how fast those numbers will go up.

that being said i had an awful few minutes once when i swept a paper wallet wrong and almost donated the change to the miners. luckily the change went back to the original addy in my case. but it sucked waiting lol After offline signing, I always verify the raw transaction (on a different device) before broadcasting. Being paranoid works ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

If he would have reported his criminal income to taxes, they would have had hard evidence, and his prison sentence would probably have been much longer. They only used the tax evasion for the trial because they couldn't prove anything else. . . and why is this not a part of money laundering? Money laundering is when you pretend the money was earned elsewhere, right? So: you steal a car, sell it, and launder the by pretending you earned the money from the car wash you own. IRS doesn't want that, they just want you to report the sale of the stolen car. Lol ![Cheesy](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif) So the IRS' stance is: as long as you pay taxes, they don't care?

Trezor developers are even calling paper wallet a relic of the past They gain customers if people believe that, so I can't help but think they might be biased. I know some people who generated their paper wallets on normal computer with internet connection, using their every day browser. There are also people who fall for phishing emails and give away their hardware wallet seed. That doesn't make the system bad, it makes the users dumb. There is no newbie warning on bitaddress.org website to download page and use offline generation... There's a link to the GitHub Repository, and indeed the site recommending blockchain.info is a bit outdated. Legacy addresses aren't that modern either, so you could argue the entire site is a relic of the past. But I also appreciate just keeping it up, and people should learn not to do things without understanding it, especially when it comes to Bitcoin. I'll quote eddie13 for this: Should never have put the temporary illusion of safety above personal liberty.. I'm all for warning Newbies, but I sure hope we don't reach the "don't put your cat in the microwave" level of warnings.
The funny thing is: paper wallets were amongst the first wallets I've used, and it's the only wallet type from that time I still trust. But only if I made it myself, of course ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

My kids are young You messed up the quote. Let me give you another example. When kids get to a certain age, they start making up stories and innocent lies as their imagination starts running wild. What seems cute, can become troublesome. My friend's little pooper loves playing with me. We wrestle and he pushes me around and it's all fun. Recently, he has started "lying" and making up stories how other people hit him. Sounds cute? Maybe. It's not that cute being asked by the kindergarten teacher if you hit your children. That happened to my friend because his boy was letting his imagination run wild in front of everyone. He also told his teacher that his dad's friend (me) kicked him in the head and body-slammed him to the floor. ![Grin](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/grin.gif) I'm fully aware of this risk, and things that used to be innocent just a few years ago can be suspicious now. I've had my fair share of it already. If your kids figure out that you are doing something on your computer with Bitcoin and money, that crazy imagination can come alive again and you never know who might be listening or be interested in their stories. Because of OPSEC, we use a codeword at home for "Bitcoin" instead of calling it Bitcoin. As much as I like promoting Bitcoin, I don't want the kids to talk about it at school.

Selecting posts to give merit is not trivial. As a merit source I spend many hours per week meriting posts, and it is an endless job. I have now more than 1000 smerits to spend. If I just sit here for more 30 minutes looking for good posts to merit I will find a LOT.
I still find there are many users holding merit for no reason, which I think might be laziness or something else (vanity or some feeling of superiority trying to meet high standards?) I admit, I'm lazy ![Tongue](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/tongue.gif) I don't just search for posts to Merit (unless I'm checking someone's post history), so I need to find them from my normal forum reading. I wouldn't mind dumping 30 times 50 Merit on very good posts, but I don't want to spend days looking for them.
