Is there any statistic showing the total number of members of a particular rank? For example how many newbs, juniors, members, full members etc there are? That would be interesting to see.

here you are but stats are from the end of september... if you want more data check full thread:

...
Merit system works about 8,5 month, since introducing 251.653 merits was given for the post writing, they came to 22.547 users (from 2,400,000 users registered what is less than 1%!!!).

Below you can see how many users and number of merit was awarded in each group of users.
You can see that the largest group of users 56,47% who have ever earn merit are users who start their posting career after introducing new system – what means… newbies!!! Looking at numbers of merit the situation is the same this group have earned the largest part of merit (for posting).
Of course you always can say that many of them didn’t get their merit in proper way – bought them, begged for them etc. but it still remains the largest group.
...
924  Other / Meta / Re: Writing a welcome message on: October 28, 2018, 08:16:41 PM
Common rule violations

These are the most common rule violations that newbies make. There are other rules than these.

  • Plagiarism: If you copy some text from somewhere, then you should have a good reason for it, and you must link to the source. Doing otherwise is plagiarism. Changing a few words around doesn't matter. If we find that you plagiarized, then you absolutely will be permanently banned, even if we find it years after you did it.
  • Multi-posting: Do not post twice in a row in a topic. Instead, edit your old post.
  • Low-content posts: Do not post low-content garbage like "agreed!", "nice project!", etc. You can be banned for this, and it's also pointless if you want to increase your rank, since you will never get merit for such posts.

Fully agreed with @sncc and other users - every week we have tens new "Why I got banned?" threads in Meta board... In my opinion the most important information for new users is what is strictly prohibited and results in being banned so this section should be moved up over the Forum rank one I would also suggest using red color this one time. As it was said many times most of people spend not more than 10 - 20 seconds reading such messages, so lets be sure that at least this one message will reach them.

925  Other / Meta / Re: Finally a turtle crossed the finish line on: October 28, 2018, 01:27:38 PM
Congrats man!

Unfortunetly @DonPedroDinero has stolen my thought:
..
I’ve checked your status at bpip.org and you are currently the 325th most merited profile. If we take into account that there are between 90k and 450k active users, it is something to be proud of. If we compare ourselves to the top posters it looks like we are not doing much, but we are doing a pretty decent contribution.
...

But I try to expand it a bit....
@DonPedroDinero gave the number of all active users, since this number contains any users even those who just registered or wrote several posts and left the forum and I'll focus on "ranked" ones

According to Statistics of 2,312 million bitcointalk users by @mazdafunsun at the beginning of September we had:

2.144 Legendary (about 1.600 active)
4.140 Hero Members (about 2.500 active)
8.999 Seniors Members (about 4.950 active)
18.170 Full Members (about 10.000 active)
27.843 Members (about 13.950 active)

so there are about 62.000 users with rank Member and above and more than 50% (if I read the graphs well) 33.000 users we can call active.

That's enough stats - let's get back to the point... when I write this post you have 112 merits on your account what puts you on the 316 position in most merited users ever in Bpip ranking. When I look at your merit score I could say 112 nothing special - more than 33k users have 100 and more merits as well, but after looking at deeper stats I say WOW your posting contribution during last 10 month was really great you were better than 9.900 other active Full Members (you were also better than 4860 active Seniors 2450 Heroes and even 1500 Legendary) and this is your real achievement!!!

That's why I like merit system: It's not enough just to be here... Being here with any kind contribution is the key

Last month I need only one merit to be able to put images in my posts, One singel merit was my goal (because I didn't think I'm good enough to get more)... After getting a few, I start to treat them as challenge... Not easy one... but the harder you work for them the more satisfy you are after getting any...

So once again congrats man but not only for ranking up but more for being one from the 1% of the most contributing poster in last 10 months!

Well done!!!

926  Other / Meta / Re: [LOG] sMerit HODLers who sent merits for the first time on: October 25, 2018, 07:38:09 PM
Taking 6months to send 1 merit is suspicious, but I don’t think you are handing the data in the best way here OP.  You could be onto something although it will probably take one of the better data guys to come and sort through it all.

Not necessarily suspicious (for sure not in all cases) - that list comes from merit database (unless Coin-1 correct me)

1. this case we don't know anything about their activity from January till September some of them could not have been active at all and that's the reason of not giving merit away
2. there are a lot of Members who didn't earn any merit so they wasn't interested in meriting... probably they didn't even know they have 1 smerit after 17 IX whole forum start to talk about merits and that's how they know about it (it could also refer to upper rank as well most of them wasn't also active on merit field)

... It's just statistics that can be interesting and probably useful.

Sorry but listing all rows from prepared dataset you you can not call statistics...
If you at least compare how many people sent their first merit during a month before introducing 1 merit revolution to the amount of people who did it during a month after that day and we could see a difference which would show us something - it would be a statistics.

Don't get me wrong - i like some of your previous work but not this one.

Maybe you didn't read the whole post that is why you are saying it is pointless. But to keep you up to speed he basically created this long list of members who have started sending their merits (mostly to newbies) when theymos created a new ranking system that ranked down a lot of Jr. Members back to newbies, this day marked this members who have hodl their sMerits and finally started sending merits to this Jr. Members turned newbies. Bottom line is I think he is trying to connect this newbie accounts of being alt accounts of this merit hoarders.

Connecting peple who send first their first merit ever with downgraded jr. members would be better idea - many people from OPs list actually did it but there are also many of them who sent their first (and only) merit to members, full members and upper rank as well (actually more than 42% merits from users who give away first merit after 17.09.2018 went to members and upper ranks)....

I wished to log the users who registered a relatively long time ago and were active on the forum, hence on January 24, 2018, they received airdropped sMerits but began to send their merits only from September 17, 2018, and later.

The table below shows the user name, his rank at the day when the merit system has been implemented, the date of the first merit send by him, and the amount of merits that were earned by him before this sending. The currently red tagged members will be marked in italic, permanently banned users will be strikelined.
...

I can't get the point of publishing that loooong list.
Do you think you put a pressure on them to send more merits or do it often? I don't think so... (probably none of them will ever visit it)

Sorry but for me it's boring and pointless...

What's much more important - by publishing this list you "punish" users, who sent at least one merit, but thousands of users who didn't send any merit will stay in shadow... unnoticed maybe forever...

929  Other / Meta / Re: New Child Board for banned users... on: October 25, 2018, 04:36:22 PM

...
And some perspective: mods have been banning 1-2 thousand users per week recently. According to the OP there were ~30 appeal threads in ~ half a week, including bumps of older threads from before. Could be worse.
...

1-2k bans per week – damn it... it’s quite a lot - they have really lot of work…

...
But this is what Meta is for: forum-based issues, and that's what a banned account falls under. It's even in the rules that banned users can only post in here. I don't think we need a new sub for this, especially as Meta would be pretty empty without them
...
But then what's the point in Meta? As I've said before we don't need sub boards for every little issue, especially when creating a new one will leave the existing one dead or largely inactive.
...

Once again: no one wants to throw these threads out of meta board just to move them child board – I understand a child board as a part of main board just more specialized in a specific matter.
I wouldn’t also worry that meta would be empty without them. I gave the idea for consideration, because there are really lot of such threads (tens a week) but there are still not more than 15%-25% of all meta threads so there would still many threads left in main board, so I’m sure so it would not become inactive nor dead.

The description of meta bard is “Discussion about the Bitcoin Forum” what I see much wider than “Discussion about specific users complains”, more like place to discuss about forum like the whole – its rules, ranks, stats, inconveniences, possible facilities etc... where specific users issues are treated more like examples than main point of focus...

930  Other / Meta / Re: New Child Board for banned users... on: October 24, 2018, 11:47:48 PM
...
And that's exactly what this users/members did/are doing, and I do not see anything wrong in it, probably making more than one thread or persistently commenting on the thread made, then it's definitely against the rules
...

I've never said it's against the rules, I wrote that it stays in compliance with rule 25, but considering the large amount of these threads moving them into one Child Board would clean a bit Meta. It's only a little organizational change. I think I would be also more comfortable for for them because getting into Meta they would immediately know where they should put their thread and what also important - having all similar threads in one place some of them maybe first read some other threads before writing their own.

I think it would be a good idea since we will be done with all the posts about banned accounts etc.
But if you think about it, It's like you are not banning them anymore, you just quarantine them in a subforum topic that they can keep spamming.

According rule 25 "The only exception is creating a thread in Meta about your ban." so they can't post in others threads...

Can we call it The Swamp?

Why not ;-)

Thats the reason why i am created this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5043370.0 !

931  Other / Meta / New Child Board for banned users... on: October 24, 2018, 10:54:06 PM
Thanks to hard work of administrators, moderators and many volunteer reporters very often forbidden behaviors are disclosed and punished by bans. Unfortunately as the number of users and bans increase, more and more banned users complain about their situation or look for its reason by writing new threads in Meta section. I’ve checked only first three pages (last few days) of Meta section and found more than 30 single threads regarding someone's problem in this matter. I didn't check more but I'm sure that it could be close to hundred of them every month. It makes real mess in the Meta board…

The realize how many of them there are look the list below (only last 4 pages)
1.   hay hay i have been banned, please somebody explain to me (-_-')
2.   Good day I would like to appeal my banned account.
3.   My Legendary account has been banned, any Modo to tell me why ?
4.   Unreasonable account ban
5.   My account had been banned, what should i do??
6.   Requesting mods to reconsider the banning of our project's account.
7.   Please Help
8.   Account lockout. Why ??
9.   My Account has been Banned, Why ??
10.  Ban appeal
11.  account fullmember in read-only mode for more than 9 months. theymos not react
12.  Autoban. Help
13.  Hello Please Help me for My account
14.  help me figure out where I broke the rules
15.  Ban Duration
16.  Account Banned
17.  Recovery of my account zefirka
18.  For that ban???
19.  Why was my account banned?
20.  I was very silly and consequently my account was blocked
21.  Account banned
22.  Why my account get banned?
23.  Can Someone Tell Me why My Account Get Banned?
24.  Can you explain ban evasion ?
25.  Account lockout
26.  Account blocked, why?
27.  Why was my account blocked?
28.  The reason why the account is blocked, why ??
29.  Auto ban!!!
30.  My account got banned and wanna know the reason.

Of course I do understand that being banned could be a disaster for each user and there have to be a place for threads related to this matter (and the meta section seems the most appropriate). What even more important creating a thread about banned account in Meta section is the only permitted activity for banned people (rule 25th). But maybe considering a really large amount of similar threads, it would be a good solution to create a Child Board especially for this...  I think it could clean a bit Meta board...

If you like this idea please vote... If not please do it as well.

933  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why you keep complaining on: October 23, 2018, 06:56:07 PM

I think we have third wave of merit hunters...

First wave was "I love merit system... It's so great... I'm so happy that my rank was decreased... Thank you thank you thank you...."

Second one was dozens of guides "how to get merit" written by unmerited yet users...

When such threads are not enough to get merit we have third one - modified version with a bit of criticism on other users who dare not to like merit.. system...

I'm wonder what another one would be...

934  Other / Meta / Re: Registration for beginners on: October 23, 2018, 12:39:26 PM

I can bet that much more than half of users didn't ever read the fundamental rules of BTT - you can see it in Meta board - there are hundreds of threads asking how to get merit, how to rank up, why i was banned, what is plagiarism, wy i can't put a image etc. That's why I think the idea of OP is not bad in general...

That wont do much. So yea it might require you decent knowledge to pass the "exam", but then what? A few days later then the answers would be leaked, rendering the "exam" useless. If they don't read the rules, then too bad for them. They will be banned in no time.

I'm not sure... I was thinking about something very similar earlier, but not as condition of registration rather as condition of promotion to Newbie rank (or get first Merit but this case Jr. Member requirement should be risen to 2 Merits).

I though about it as kind of walkthrough activity, were the question shows in random order.  I'm not sure if it could be done in this forum software - maybe randomly generated questionnaire or maybe it would require external software....
But what's important - we don't have to worry that answers would leak - the purpose is not make users to learn them by hart or to write them in their own words - the purpose is only to make users to read the rules (random order of questions would enforce it). I'm sure that enforcing people to read the rules would rise their awareness and also would help them to avoid of being banned.

Another advantage (if this walkthrough activity would need at least 15-20 minutes to be passed) of this solution would be making life of bootfarmers (multi signature spammers) little bit harder as well...

is there a guide to making interesting Treads to get a merit?
...

You've already answered yourself - make an interesting Thread and you'll probably get a merit

You'll find dozens of guides how to get merit - but they tell you only: write good looking, well written (good speling and gramar), interesting/helpful/meaningful posts.

And that's enough - it's all you have to know - rest is up to you.
Just think about the topic what could be useful or interesting for others - no one tell you what should it be because it could be ANYTHING - story from your own life, guide for creating crypto wallet or protecting from hackers, some stats research, simply everything!!!

...
If I am in my local forum there are some treads that are made into a discussion if a tread made is good and interesting it will get a merit. Is it here?
...

You can "hunt for merits" both in local board or main ones. From my own experiences it's easier to get them on main boards (English spoken) but it depends on local community and its merit activity.... for example 17 - 20% of all merits were given on Russian local threads...

936  Other / Meta / Re: Bias on giving merit, forum negativity and positivity to the newbies. on: October 23, 2018, 10:17:23 AM

NEWBIE + GOOD POST = IGNORE
HIGH RANK + GOOD POST = MERITS
...

Yep being Newbie or low ranked user is harder to get merit - its true but it's not imposible. Being the "fresh one" puts you on the spotlight and you have to work a bit harder than "oldboys" but it's just like in real life. When you are newcomer you have to show at first yourself from the good side.  So probably you won't get merit for the first good post or second one but when you write something really good noone would look at your rank and you will get plenty of merits.

Look at these posts below - they were wrote by newbies or low ranked users and some of ranked users found them very good and gave 20 or 50 merits to reward them:

And I also could show you a thousands good posts of ranked member which hasn't been rewarded but you can find them everywhere....

In my observation, quality post doesn't entirely guarantee a merit at the end of the day especially for the new users. Why I say this is, I have seen good posts/topics that has no merit yet I and so many new users learnt alot from it. It becomes a problem when a new user struggles to contribute in a way and it passes by without any form of recognition (merit)
...

Unfortunately not each good post will bring you a merit, but if you wrote ten of them, the probability that you will be rewarded increases very much ...
This system isn't perfect... It isn't also always fair... sometimes poor posts receive many merits and great ones remain without any reward...
But as long the solution is based on people/users the system would be only as good as people involved in it...

as one said: "A chain is no stronger than its weakest link"

...
but what hurts the most is when one reads comments that indirectly makes it look like you are try to give quality only because of the merits(of course, the merit is part of the reason) however, there was a good struggle and lots of reading and research in other to produce that quality post that is being tag as 'desperately looking for merits'. That hurts so much.
...

Yes, but it's very often true... ;-)
There will be always a spotlight on the Newbies but there's one solution - don't bother and do your job, when you wrote 5 - 10 - 15 good posts - I'm sure that other users stop comment your post that way...
