941  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [SIDEHACK STICK] Official sales thread for everywhere not already covered on: August 27, 2015, 07:27:00 AM

'Cause my old 286 is still running, and has dos and keen installed, and then some.
plus i miss hearing that old 20MB 5.25" HDD winding up and setting the heads in place. .. i wonder how many hashes a minute that system could do :-?

Short, flippant answer: About 60 times as many as it could do in a second!!!  Smiley
942  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN launches 4th generation Bitcoin mining ASIC: BM1385 on: August 27, 2015, 07:20:59 AM

But i'm expecting the S7 to be within the same form factor/heat dissipation of the S5 so i would be surprised if the watt consumption would be over 690w at the wall at full speed.

I sure hope you are correct. It's just a bit worrisome that Bitmain introduced the S5+ "monster mine" about the same time. I'd rather they didn't always think "bigger is better".
943  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5+ is available to order, 7.722TH/S 0.445J/GH on: August 27, 2015, 07:16:53 AM
As a home miner, I hope that the S5+ does NOT portend the design of the S7.....
944  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Antminer s6 ? on: August 27, 2015, 07:12:09 AM
Marketing folks make stuff all the time in terms of product designations. I figure most of the time it's the result of a bad bet and too much alcohol. Then the technical guys have to find an explanation that hides the awful truth.

If anybody remembers the PC Jr., The story I hear is that it was a bet between IBM Marketing and Engineering. Marketing said they could sell anything that Engineering could produce. Engineering wanted to prove them wrong.....

I wonder if/when you decide to sell your S3 if you can charge a premium, since it's obviously a VERY lucky miner!!!

946  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Vote BIP100 on: August 27, 2015, 07:01:44 AM
Thats a funny post.

Might want to let know the end user that to vote, they can just point their hash at a BIP100 supporting pool.

I am curious about something. Is mining with no BIP100 or BIP101 designation counted as BIP100 or what?  I mine with Slush, and do NOT use the BIP101 port. So who/what am I "voting" for? Is "abstaining" a vote for BIP100, BIP101, or neither?
947  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5+ is available to order, 7.722TH/S 0.445J/GH on: August 26, 2015, 11:06:43 PM
How long has it been now since BitMain has had S5-anything to sell?  I am starting to worry.

I'm not worried but I do wonder if they are done with the S5 gear.  The S5+ really is a nice miner lots of power in not much space.

But now they announced a new chip it's hard to say what they are doing.    Everyone knew this could be a one batch to use up a lot of old stock of chips.  It's looking more and more like this is true.

yeah it seems more and more likely that this was just a one time batch to clear out existing chips

What seems odd about that is that Bitmain had to engineer and test a new hashing board, as well as a new controller with lots more ports for hashing boards and fans. Wouldn't it have just been easier to build more S5 miners until they ran out of chips? Seems like a lot of work to just run out the existing supply of chips, as well as support the S5+ product for some period of time after it's produced. It seems that S5+ didn't have to a "triple wide power sucker", it could have just as easily been a hashing board improvement for the existing S5 controller and frame.

Could the S5+ have been some kind of prototype that became a product? If the BM1385 chip had the same layout as the BM1384 (i.e. the S5 chip), then I would speculate that the S5+ was a prototype for the S7, but my limited understanding is that the boards for the BM1384 and BM1385 will have to be different.
948  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: BIP 101 blocks on: August 26, 2015, 10:13:09 PM
So, if BIP101 doesn't get adopted, does that most likely mean that XT goes down with it?

I assume that BIP100 can get adopted without adopting XT and whatever is buried inside XT?

I sometimes think think that folks are arguing very fine distinctions that don't really matter in the end. My general sense is that while not the same, BIP101 and XT are "joined at the hip", and not really separable at this time.
949  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: BIP100 surpasses BIP101 in one day with 10% of the last 24hr blocks on: August 26, 2015, 07:32:19 PM
I mine at Slush, and my simplistic understanding is that the "usual/default" port of 3333, that's been used for years, is the BIP100 port. If you want the BIP101 blocks, then you use a different port (3334 I think). This whole BIP101/XT thing has been a complete fiasco in my opinion.

I think a more accurate headline for this thread would have been "BIP101 struggles to get 10% acceptance".

Just my BTC.001 of a BIP100 block (I hope).  Smiley

They give their miners an option to vote for BIP101. Here's the announcement they made. Those that mine on the regular URLs mine regular blocks, meaning they don't take part on supporting a certain proposal.

Thanks for the Facebook pointer. You comment suggests that there are actually 3 choices:

- Abstain from expressing an opinion (i.e. the current 3333 URL)
- Vote for BIP100 (What port?)
- Vote for for BIP101 (Port 3301 from Facebook)

I would think it's also valuable to mention this on the pool website, but I found nothing there.

Anybody else confused?

950  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [9000 TH] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + VarDiff on: August 26, 2015, 07:21:29 PM
Joking aside, I think Slush did the right thing by offering the choice to vote.
Initially it was looking as fail-over to backup, but it seems more and more as a vote against BIP101 - no person (with over 1PH) would stay for over 24h on the wrong side with all the stats provided from Slush and posts in this thread stating the obvious and pointing to the right ports both here and on twitter/facebook

I tried to find via the regular website anything about the BIP101 discussion or port numbers. I found nothing. Anybody enlighten me, or do I have Tweet/Facebook to hear how to use Slush's pool? Personally I think it's silly to use Twitter or Facebook for this kind of stuff, but I am an old fart.

bitcoinwisdom.com still appears to be hung. BTC seems to be crawling back up to $230 at this time.

@DebitMe

Thanks for the PACMIC v3 spreadsheet, it's very informative. It assumes a constant BTC price and no difficulty changes I expect? I mention BTC price since I think Bitmain actually has to pay for electricity in something related to $$$.

Thanks again!
954  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [9000 TH] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + VarDiff on: August 26, 2015, 04:13:44 PM
Any thoughts on why somebody with 12PH just recently decided to join Slush's pool? It doesn't appear that this person wants to mine BIP101 blocks if I am reading the graph right. Maybe he/she wants to cast his 12PH vote against BIP101?

Once you "hover" over the bubbles you can see the user count. Slush's total rate is dominated by less than a dozen total users as I read the bubbles.
955  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: BIP 101 blocks on: August 26, 2015, 04:01:04 PM
So, at the present time is the label "BIP101" the same as "XT"? This whole thing is a complete fiasco (IMHO), and leads to massive confusion and questions. Makes me wonder if we won't have to worry about a 51% attack so much as internal self destruction.
956  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN launches 4th generation Bitcoin mining ASIC: BM1385 on: August 26, 2015, 03:57:41 PM
whats happening on slash pool is the voting for bigger blocks size .

That's what I thought at first too. But if you look at the pool stats this whale is not pointed at the BIP101 port. And it is a whale, since it's got over 12 PH/s.

Is it a XT port or a BIP101 port? Because those arent the same thing. At all.

I don't think it's easy to tell which ports folks are using on Slush. The one hint I have found is under the "Pool Statisitics" tab is a chart with PH rate graphs broken out with BIP101 as one of the labels. I don't see an XT labeled line. My simplistic understanding is that SLUSH is essentially "labeling" blocks according to which pool you use. I think that BIP101 is the moniker that he's using at this time, but the whole XT/BIP101/Blocksize fiasco is terribly confusing for most folks. It's quite possible I have this wrong, as I expect about 90% of the miners in the world do.
957  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN launches 4th generation Bitcoin mining ASIC: BM1385 on: August 25, 2015, 10:53:00 PM
Can we expect the S7 miners to still be profitable after the Bitcoin halving or will we still be seeing new and improved chips before that?

There is no reasonable answer to this question at this time, nor even after the the S7 produced. There are at least 5 variables that determine it's profitability 10 months from now (roughly the halving  date).

1) When it's delivered.

2) It's power consumption

3) It's hashrate.

4) What the BTC price is after halving.

5) The difficulty after halving or shortly thereafter.

6) What your electricity price is. If it's $.10 or higher now, it almost certainly won't be profitable except briefly at introduction.

Since I am an English speaker, I use English words. Perhaps some folks would like to try offensive/stupid words in another language. Give the poor scavenger something to read. Bonus points for those folks that can blend multiple languages together.

Without trying to be a jerk, why is the "HODL" misspelling so popular on Bitcoin? I really don't think it's accidental as often as I see it, and I wonder if there is some kind of inside joke I am missing.

Thanks again to suchmoon for his generous funding of these threads over the last months.
