941  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Thai Baht (฿) has always been the most frequently used Bitcoin symbol right? on: October 07, 2012, 07:37:29 PM
The B double vertical strokes is a Unicode symbol?  What is its code?  I can't find it on any list of Unicode symbols (maybe I'm not looking in the right place?).
Yep. Unicode defines symbols like this using "combining" characters (the "already combined" characters exist only for compatibility with legacy encodings such as Latin-1), so for B⃦ you do:This works to some extent for all possible combinations (apparently some people are getting blocks, though?).
From there, fonts can specialize with "ligatures" (renderings that represent a sequence of characters) - which is where things can definitely use improvement.
I see...so it will require two codes to generate...in time I suppose the implementation will catch up with the spec. I get Bbox on my iPad on iOS 6.
It renders correctly on my laptop...

Why not given Ben a call and ask?  Most journalists are not impossible to get a hold of!

Another good use was pointed out in the excellent TEDx talk (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=115555.0):
the ultra poor -- those who have no means of establishing financial arrangements with banks and have no safe place to store their money -- could use Bitcoin not only as a bank but also as a global payment system.

Someone else mentioned this type of thing earlier and I wanted to comment. Very cool thinking and it appeals to me a lot. Is anyone actually trying to put this into action?

Not that I'm aware of...I mean, not directly.  A cheap Ellet would go a long way Smiley

you could send the Nigerian Debt Collectors!

Joking aside, im just wondering if there has been any more conversation between Pirates father and the OP - or is this thread a load of BS?

I vote BS.  It seems if you can get people to think something is happening for long enough, people eventually either forget they were robbed or stop caring that they were...
I think I am feeling this way now, I guess we are going through the various stages of grief.
interesting observation....I think you may be right...
945  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Regarding the Bitcoin Foundation....... on: October 07, 2012, 07:17:02 PM
I think the main point is to act as a public front and means of delegating resources to tasks that will promote the spread of Bitcoin...I'm not quite sure why so many people are so worried...

Hi everyone I'm from Iran I'm one of the friends of techmix(one of the translator) actually we as PEOPLE OF IRAN don't have any kind of problem with any nation or countries even USA or ISRAEL it's a government and political problem but some people think that we're very wide and we like a big terrorist but it isn’t true we have a lot of problem because of these sanctions so I said as a person who lived in Tehran Bitcoin is great for Iranian people we are not stupid I'm telling you why it is great for us for example : Islamic Azad University is a private university in Iran and with a total of over 400 campuses, is a unique institution, that can be considered one of the largest in the world (more information). it has a lot of branches here so as you know many universities especially if they have a ENGINEERING department they have computer engineering faculty so we have a lot of these student in Iran who study these science also we have a lot of private institute that teach Networking and these things so just think that these student want to challenge with servers and VPS so they can learn better and working with server and you know ask their problem from their professors for that even for these little thing they can use bitcoin and buy some VPS for their self and this is good for everyone because you know in Btcoin ... THE MORE THE MERRIER ... we all use the benefit of bitcoin and notice that because of sanctions we can’t use credit card so this is the best way for us to buy what we want but NO ONE I emphasize NO ONE(except few people like Jim and some of you that donate us and support us)help us we don’t say give us money but you know some people they didn’t even bother them self to reply an email to us for example techmix few days ago emailed to admin of bitcoin.it and asked from him that make a Farsi section for us that we can translate wiki for Iranians but although techmix emailed 2 or 3 times to him he didn’t reply anything to him so now here we are ... we must buy VPS and build a site for this so as you could see it just not because we don't want to give information to Iranian People we want but some people think that because we're Iranian so if they work with us some how Obama and US government Banned them or I don't know ARREST them and these NON-sense things ... by the way from techmix & all the rest of our team I appreciated from you that donate us some bitcoin it is what you do that give us energy to work again
thank you very much  Kiss

I ran a proxy server for connections originating in Iran a few years back.  Bitcoin + Iran (with its loads of young, smart people) could be prime for true revolution...

This could use a bump right about now.
I agree on perma-bumping this...

Does MtGox know for certain who pirate is?
950  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Do you support the launch of the Bitcoin Foundation? on: October 07, 2012, 07:02:21 PM
Did anyone really not see this coming?  I mean, can you really think of Bitcoin becoming big without a foundation?

What, technically, can be done to centralize Bitcoin? I mean, I can see how one could centralize the addition of new features, but, you can undo what's been done.  Bitcoin is Bitcoin...it's not like it can just suddenly become this completely non-anonymous, heavily fee based network via a central authority...everyone running the software would have to agree...

No doubt the cash like aspects of Bitcoin do encourage cash like use, especially in the same illegal ways cash is used; but to fail to see the global, society changing differences Bitcoin has from cash I think is short sighted.  Bitcoin is a bit more than drugs, porn, and guns.
954  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TEDx: Bitcoin, seasteading, and 3D printing: How technology moves society on: October 07, 2012, 04:06:17 AM
Great talk. Excellent observation that innovation does more than political agitation. Of the three technologies you mention, I think bitcoin will be the only one significantly improved/progressed/wider spread 5 years from now. But the combination of the three, fully developed, would be society changing.

Guy above me seems like kind of a douche

Deleted my comment because it does seem douche-y

A quick search on the forum shows that Come-from-Beyond spends his days spreading FUD and baseless accusations about me.

Welcome to the forums  Grin

Had him on ignore already. The whole bet debacle triggered a ton of new additions to the ignore list.

Regardless of how you earn money, you pay taxes on it. If you get paid in chickens, you pay taxes...

Trololol, you forgot to sell your SolidCoins? xD
Lol...I sold 1k solid coins right before the tiny market folded...I think I got a whopping 6 or 8 bitcoins for it.

959  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 2 Million unspent pristine bitcoins on: October 04, 2012, 02:31:29 AM
I just ran a quick analysis on the blockchain.

Out of the 192386 blocks currently mined, very many of them
have a BTC 50 block reward that has never been spent.

To be exact, 41493 blocks have an unspent reward.

That is worth approximately BTC 2'074'650.00 (not counting fees).

That's 2 Million+ pristine coins hoarded, or about 20% of the BTC market cap.

Can you make an analysis to check if these coins really are lost:

"Bitomat.pl Loss
Time: 2011-07-26"
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=83794.0

Or maybe someone has been able to actually spend them after 'losing' them?

I thought that was just a theft...
960  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many bitcoins do you have? on: October 04, 2012, 02:26:16 AM
I sold a bunch at $18 a piece and kept the rest. If Bitcoin crashes, I won't feel like I missed out on the cash...I kept a bunch as well, so if Bitcoin takes off, I won't be upset for having sold out. I got mine for basically nothing...back when CPU mining was possible, even on a laptop.
