Pain in the ass to setup/run/maintain bitcoind and p2pool when they are used to just putting in a pool url. Plus they would need to make sure their bitcoind and p2pool maintain good p2p connections or mining will slow or stop when blocks change.

True, most aren't reliable I think. I'm running it 24/7 and on AWS. Some of those pools may disappear, mine won't.

Absolutely, but dont use NAt networking, use bridged and give its own ip straight to the router. No bridged either. Though i got bitcoin, cgminer and p2pool running perfect on windows server 2008r2.

Is this type of merged mining like at slush pool? I dont think so, I think its akin to solo mining nmc and you get a whole block, no shares
