1  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike - 16 chip ASIC Open Source Board - Preliminary on: November 21, 2013, 12:41:52 AM
Chris,

Thanks for coming back, I think it will work out better in the end but realise this is not easy.  I fear the amount of work put into this project was somehow the cause of the accident (fatigue) and hope that you'll find another project to put as much spirit into (and hopefully gain more).

I also have heaps of k16, k1, klego and picngo boards, stencils and other stuff here which I can ship for anyone who actually wants them at this point. I also have full parts and Avalon chips enough for about 12 k16s, which I intended to build myself but never started.

Are you interested in building kits or would you prefer someone else to take this on?   I guess you're looking for a buyer for the lot?

Thanks,
Tom

This is all that's standing between me and my miners, and I can't seem to find anyone selling them in BTC. Reply here or PM me your price.
Thanks,

It's impossible for us to get 100% of our refund back because steamboat converted some btc --> usd to cover the parts costs, exactly how much he had swapped over is anyone's guess and is why a bit of transparency would go a long way.

Wasn't the entire amount converted to USD in the cart via bitpay?

I realized that we have a laser cutter on the production line where I work, we use it to print metal nameplants. I'm going to cut my own stencil for free, rather than pay out the A** for one made.

Try Colin at placedroid.com, he's been assembling miners, also sells stencil making as a service.
5  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Liquid Synergy Designs Inc. -ASIC mining hardware on: November 12, 2013, 10:52:51 PM

I should think so, he's litterally sitting on 'tons' of parts for miners with no chips to go onto them.

Except that there is a setup cost with a production run that you wouldn't want to pay for just a few boards.

It says in the shop "These machines include a high performance water cooling system with a back mounted radiator."
I guess we won't know how hard they can be pushed till we see them in the wild.

We paid in BTC, not dollars. So we should actually get more back than we paid, in theory.

I would have to agree. In my opinion, because bitcoin in itself has interest, as it constantly rises, our assembly refunds rightfully must be returned to us in the form of which we payed, in bitcoins (in denomination of cost based on the time history for which we payed for them when they were worth $80-$120 ea. per BTC).

Because for a ridiculous example, I payed $560 for Assembly in bitcoins, of which at the time they were worth ~$112 ea., be it that I sent ~5BTC for assembly, if by happenstance in the future a bitcoin increased to an extreme value (which it possibly may) such as $5,000+, that is $25,000 that I could have simply sat on--significantly more than being returned $560 assembly refund based on USD such as, I would get only .112BTC back in this extreme example, when initially it was 5 BTC i sent over (44 times that!)

Prices were quoted in usd.  If btc had gone down in value you would be complaining and wanting your refunds in usd.   The constructive, useful, interesting posts in this thread and only just enough to keep people here.  I'm desperate for the refunds to be paid out so the whining will stop.

Possible to latch the output of the two regulators together in this case as a work around?

For those who have hot air gun and a fat wire to do it with :-P

I wouldn't recommend this.  Bridging power supplies like this is a science.   In the end this board was a compromise, I think I suggested wire bridges to segment the power supply and headers for off board supplies but this was seen as too esoteric.   If anyone does a rev 2 design it would be smart to allow for up to 4 core power supplies.

Given the chips being auctioned are in California have you considered finding an assembly house in the US to reduce tax and shipping costs for people over here who might be interested?
14  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Liquid Synergy Designs Inc. -ASIC mining hardware on: November 05, 2013, 05:36:15 PM
Firmware will accept frequencies up to 450, which is kinda overshooted, but it was set like that by Chris.

I think the 450 comes from Avalon, Chris just exported the limits from the chip.

I'm personally very wary of getting into this, as much as I want to get back what we put into components. With that said, Colin has offered to design a PCB for around $2k. This will bring up the price of the 2nd gen miners a bit, but since it's a fixed cost I'll try to spread it out over however many orders we get (if there is interest) in order to minimize the impact.

At any rate, given that there are zero bids on the Tradehill website, I'm inclined to think that we'll see the chips again soon at a lower price point. Unless enough people disagree with me to drive this thing forward, I think we should wait this first auction out.

Thoughts?

How about licensing the hex16 variant for Nth America?  I guess it depends on the component re-use factor.

I think these chips will be back on the market super cheap soon.

Thanks for the heads-up, TomKeddie and southerngentuk. As time is at a premium for me just now, I'm going to hold off on drafting a formal group buy agreement until I get some insight into the viability of creating new PCBs for the generation 2 chips. It doesn't sound like it'd take much alteration, but I could be wrong.

Unsurprisingly there doesn't seem to be a huge demand for these chips.  There isn't much point to an auction when the starting price is the price you expect for something.  Will be more interesting if these come back onto the market at bargain prices.

Isn't it just the setting of the DC-DC converter which is different, i.e. one resistor? Maybe too naive thinking of me...

I haven't look into it myself.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=190731.msg3453235#msg3453235

There's still a lot of components to rescue though perhaps?  New PCB, a few resistors to set the voltage and a different oscillator?

From glancing at it, it looked like the comms protocol was similar but I might be wrong.

The real problem is that the rapid growth in the network makes anything like this too risky.  It will be interesting to see what happens to this auction.

Yes it seems to be identical (at least timing is and anything else can be changed in firmware).
So basically only Avalon footprint (pinout) has to be changed (so small modifications to the board around ASICs), then you will have to replace the oscillator for 25MHz one and power regs for PLL (because 55nm Avalon now uses 1.0 instead of 1.2V).
Core voltage is now 0.9V, but since IR3895 can go as low as 0.5V output, no problem with that (you will only change one/two resistors as you're saying).
I'm planning to modify the project, but I'm probably not going to build one (maybe just one board if I'll be able to get a few chips from somewhere - and it wont be an auction).
20  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [TENTATIVE] Avalon Gen. 2 Chips Group Buy on: November 01, 2013, 04:46:42 AM
Alright, it looks like the Avalon generation 2 chips auction will be starting soon. I got the same email TomKeddie did. With these on the K16s, it looks like each one should produce 24 Gh/s now. However, even with the increased performance, ROI isn't looking too good. (I'm using the calculator over at http://mining.thegenesisblock.com/.)

With that said, I'm still willing to facilitate this group buy if there's interest. It does look like there is, so I've already transferred some of my own BTC over to Tradehill in preparation for the auction. Unless I hear a bunch of "nays" in the face of the released numbers, I'll be writing up a group buy agreement and posting it here in the morning. I'll also send out a PM to JohnK asking for his escrow services.

Ryan,

AFAIK the PCB isn't going to be compatible, do you have someone working on a new board design?  Most of the components can be re-used.  I sent a few PMs off today too see if anything was happening.

Thanks,
Tom
