1  Economy / Speculation / Re: Death Cross on: March 28, 2018, 08:36:26 PM
In the western part of the Pacific Ocean there is an island called Yap. For several hundred years, indigenous Japetzians used a unique form of currency - Rai, or stone money
That is very interesting but how does it really relate to the OP?

I am not very concerned, and if Bitcoin must drop to 3k so be it, I have seen it drop from 1000 to 300 in the past, so why not a drop from 10k to 3k? Hell, only more opportunities to buy it back from people scared like shit.
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Altcoins future on: March 05, 2018, 11:30:44 AM
What do you think about alts future? I strongly believe in Eth , because it provides solutions to different problems. Others only copy eth’s idea in order to raise some money. We don’t need 2000+ alts, just 10 and it will be enough. What u think?

You are right at this moment a lot of shitcoins in the markets,
all shitcoins will be disappear by itself because there is no active development
but remember all shitcoins that exist in the markets is help bitcoin and ethereum grow, because of free promotions from all that coins

Actually there is nothing new under the sun, as the saying goes... If you look back at those first years that bitcoin was created, there were a lot of altcoins created too, some were popular, some not so much, but only a very select few is present and live nowadays.

The rest is present in coinmarketcap but they have a total market cap of a joke. Click View All in coinmarketcap to see them all. They are either death or abondoned. But there are like hundreds of them.

And literally the same will happen to all altcoins created currently (but a select few, of course). They will be present in coinmarketcap in 2020 but with ranks above 2000.

Considering, that people trade non-existent ethereum-based kitties for millions of dollars effectively clogging the network, or they trade collectible cards (blockchain version) with countries or celebrities for hundreds of thousands dollars, there is a lot of truth in your assessment of humanity....

5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How safe a ledger is? on: February 12, 2018, 08:28:40 PM
Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask your perspective about having ledger. There's a lot of rumor that even brand new ledgers hacked because of it's fake seals. Checking your insights about this one.
You worried what happened to this guy? https://np.reddit.com/r/ledgerwallet/comments/7obot7/all_my_cryptocurrency_stolen/All my cryptocurrency stolen (self.ledgerwallet).
I'll add what others verified that nano ledger s is very safe. Just purchase directly from www.ledgerwallet.com or with any of them www.ledgerwallet.com/retailers
Thak you for advice, I wan't buy Ledger but I am afraid that it will broke and I will lose my money(
Don't buy to resellers on ebay, buy to ledgers main website or retailers.

I am reading in the link you provided that Ledger CEO and CTO officially took care of that matter and are helping that poor guy file the complaint to the police. He knows who sold him the Ledger so chances are very high the police will be able to track down who was the scammer (if it was a seller, or some other middleman) and hopefully get the money back to the poor guy.

The lesson learnt is to always buy it from the official source. It comes sealed and you can be sure it was not tampered with.
You see, the small money you may save buying it from some fishy source may be not worth the risk of loosing ALL your crypto holdings!

That's why I'm really impressed on what the officials of Ledger company did to make their reputation remain and they are not associated with any person who wants to hack or scam their customers. The problem came along with the buyer who is not aware that the ledger he bought isn't sealed and keys are already generated and he isn't aware that the reseller has fooled him that those words was already copied by him.

The real problem may be when a hack of your ledger is much more subtle than the 24 words which are pre-generated. For instance, it may come with a replaced malevolent firmware which would generate the predefined sequence of 24 word seeds, although you would generate them yourself and would not be aware they are predefined and the hacker knows them. Still, there is this seal that would be tampered with.

Anyway, best to buy from original manufacturer.

8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Now the Market Down Approx 10 percent on: February 02, 2018, 07:26:19 AM
Around 6 months we will recover if there is no big bad news.
My prediction is for happy market conditions. but for sure we will face some bad news and this will take longer to recover.

Yes my thinking would be months too, maybe 6, maybe even more. I always tell people to compare the situation now with what we had a few years ago. Bitcoin topped 1200 or whatever, then declined very slowly, 100 dollars at a time, it was a very long and frustrating time and it took months to recover, but the recovery was spectacular - it reached ten times higher levels.

The same will happen now to both bitcoin and altcoins, I think, only the levels are higher now.
9  Economy / Speculation / Re: Whats Happening?? on: February 02, 2018, 07:18:53 AM
Well,i guess that bitcoin price will return back to 2K-3K.The last three months of 2017 there was a huge pumping of the btc price and now there`s a massive dumping.FUD and negative news everywhere,Japan will regulate exchange platforms(this is not bad news, but it causes panic).Anyway,i believe that bitcoin will recover back to 16K at the end of 2018.Now it`s the best time to buy and HODL.

mate, yours is one of the first posts I read today and for a moment my heart stopped, before I checked the current price (it is 8.5k) and I was able to breath normally. After reading your post, for a moment I imagined bitcoin price being at a 1000 USD level.

Surely you ment that the price will return to 20k levels, not 2k.
10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Proof of weak hands coin on: February 01, 2018, 01:54:29 PM
this coin remind me the Dogecoin because it was a joke in the beginins.

maybe this coin will succeed as many funcoins in the past.
joke or no joke, some things are not legal and that is that. One has freedom to joke as long as one doesn't hurt others. I am not sure what is the legal situation here.

The Dogecoin was a different story, it was introduced for dog-lovers as a toy-coin, and only later it became serious. There were no false or misleading statements involved if I recall. Here the situation is a little bit different because the statements behind the coin may be misleading (they are Ponzi-like)

OK, I expressed my views in the matter, I can see that you guys are having fun now and maybe I am a bit too serious Smiley
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Facebook bans cryptocurrencies in effort to fight scams. on: February 01, 2018, 01:20:10 PM
The ban on advertising of ICOs is a good move and it reflects only that FB wants to protect people from risky financial decisions. A lot of ICOs have merit, but a lot of them are risky at best, and well, some of them are scam all right.

On the other hand Facebook expressed that they will be researching blockchain and cryptocurrencies. I am even thinking that maybe the ban on ICO ads is one of the first results of that research. So I would think that they will be more into crypto with time. I wouldn't judge their approach to crypto based only on that one decision.
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A possibility to travel without your wallet (just with Bitcoins)? on: February 01, 2018, 01:06:51 PM
it would be great and I hope it will come one day. Meanwhile, back to the reality, I wouldn't go travelling to Asia and specifically Vietnam, because it has ban all the usage and distribution of cryptocurrencies and has very heavy fines and jail time. You see, in Asia you may start your journey all right but then the law changes and you go to jail one day.

I don't know why, but it seems that Asian countries are most volatile in regard to their approach to bitcoin. Compare Japan and Vietnam. China radically changes their attitude every second month.

So for this dream to change to reality: I would say there is a long way to go ..
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: First UK's bitcoin robbery. Stay safe. on: February 01, 2018, 12:15:36 PM
I don't expect them to register on Coinbase and just transfer btc from the address the victim was forced to send to. If they now what they're doing, they'll put coins through the mixer and cash out slowly in a non suspicious manner.
We've seen many spectacular bitcoin hacks over the years, in most cases hackers don't get caught.

I have read somewhere (but torture me, I will not locate the source in a thousand years Smiley ) that almost all bitcoin addresses now contain some fractions of bitcoins that were the result of some bitcoin hacks and thefts.

So it would seem that it is not possible to actually track bitcoins resulting from a theft or robbery, they will after some time get nicely and evenly distributed in many innocent people wallets.
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto going to DEAD on: January 31, 2018, 11:18:57 AM
No it doesn't. Bitcoin has $10k stable price and will be going up for sure.
Was 20K.  Now 10K.  Seems like it is going down to me.  Just wait until next week when Bitfinex quits sending withdrawals.  Very bad times coming soon.  BTC back to $4K.

This is a true fact.  Get ready now.  I can't do more than warn you here.
Haha the thread is not about the price in principle, but the price is an important aspect of bitcoin being dead. I am mentally prepared for every scenario: the price going up will make me happy, but I know will endure bad times, too. And definitely it may be as RawDog sais - it used to be like this several times already, that the price suffered downhill rush of large magnitudes and for long times.

More to the point, I think the regulations are actually good for bitcoin. Regulations are usually placed to protect the society, at least in principle this is why they are introduced. It will make it harder for others to scam people, be it a malevolent exchange owner, ICO enterprenuer who executes a Ponzi scheme or a hacker hacking your laptop - the police will at least know how to categorize the theft (thanks to regulations). This list may go on...
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: First UK's bitcoin robbery. Stay safe. on: January 30, 2018, 11:36:48 AM

And seriously, what's the best practice to prevent such cases, when you hold/have access to significant amount of bitcoins?

That's blooming obvious. Do the same as Satoshi, stay anonymous.

Don't make your face, ID, live in public for the criminals to see.
yes, keep a low profile - that is one.
And two - buy yourself a hardware wallet and configure it to have all your funds safely under one PIN and your "hot wallet" - a fraction of your funds - under another PIN. If you are made to reveal your PIN with a gun against your head, chances are you will be eventually made to reveal both PINs, but still - chances are, you may percevere.

16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Proof of weak hands coin on: January 30, 2018, 09:54:35 AM
I don't think I quite understand how this works.

Let's say I buy 0.012 Coins NOW and after me another one buys (not my refferal though) will that get me 10% of his investment ?

I read up about it. Everytime you buy, 10% of what you pay gets distributed among all coin holders (the more coins you have, the more you gain obviously). So you'll get a fraction of everyone that buys after you.

(...)

Hey guys what you are promoting is a Ponzi scheme, it falls exactly under the definition of Ponzi. It is actually illegal in most countries and even if it were legal the only people who benefit are the creators, so by the time it is promoted out in the open (like in this thread) the newcomers are losers.
17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you forget why we have Bitcoin? on: January 30, 2018, 08:14:40 AM
I had replied to another topic somewhere on the forum with this, but after posting it, I actually felt that it deserved its own discussion.

Quote
I think people are losing touch with the whole idea behind Crypto Currency. Profit this, profit that. What is everybody basing "Profits" off? Fiat Currency?
I thought the whole Idea behind crypto, is to abolish fiat?

Everyone wants to make a quick buck right now.. All they want to do is get some Bitcoin and sell it for Fiat Currency. Just totally missing the whole damn point.

When you buy/mine or earn crypto right now, you're supposed to be keeping it for the future. The ONLY reason you should be selling off your bitcoin, is because you're getting a good price to buy into an Altcoin, and vice versa. Only reason you should sell an Altcoin, is to buy Bitcoin.
Bitcoin and Alt coins will Always go up in value, because Fiat currency will Always go down in value. (Inflation)
Everyones gotta stop being so greedy and start thinking about the future a little bit more. And start embracing Crypto for what it was meant to be.

The only way Bitcoin can die, is if people just stop using it.
There is no reason why anyone should stop using it. The system is already pre built. We just have to utilize it.

Coinmarket cap already gives you the value of every coin, compared to BTC.
Why is everyone still worrying about BTC/USD?
BTC/USD should concern everybody just as much as the CHF/JPY does.
you are right. If anything, one should be comparing the price of bitcoin to gold Smiley Gold value is actually very stable across the human history (the golden ounce coin would allow you eat comparable number of meals in ancient Rome and in Los Angeles in 21st century).
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hackers are active these days. on: January 29, 2018, 03:21:03 PM
It seems that everytime there is a spike in bitcoin fee price and a rise in a number of bitcoin unconfirmed transactions, there is also a spike in a number of people who try to take advantage of that situation by scamming others, so beware of everybody claiming that they can accelerate your transaction. I have seen both scam attempts on that forum as well as false scamming websites. Prices for accelerating the transaction in legit places are on a boundary of scam as well, by the way.

The other category of scams I have seen recently are the false wallets taking advantage of recent air-dropped hard forked coins. You might try to use such a wallet to try to get your air-dropped coins and then you find out that not only your air-dropped coins are gone but your bitcoins are gone as well.

Good luck to everybody on avoiding the scam attempts!
19  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Are you using a hardware wallet for your coins? on: January 29, 2018, 11:04:31 AM
I can highly recommend both Trezor wallet and Ledger wallet. They are interoperational, that is you may initiate any of them with the use of your 24-word backup - so you are not getting into a vendor lock with your funds.

Also, they are both very secure. There has been a vulnerability in Trezor, but for all I know it is no longer there.

They can pair with Electrum wallet or with MyEtherWallet, so the level of protection you get with those non-native wallets is high too.

So if you have any serious amount of money, I really recommend to protect them with a hardware wallet. The cost is really not that great for the protection and security level it gives.

Just a word of caution though. Read that account: https://np.reddit.com/r/ledgerwallet/comments/7obot7/all_my_cryptocurrency_stolen/
So you should ALWAYS buy it from the original vendor: buy Ledger from Ledger and Trezor from Trezor, don't fall victim will all your funds with smallish rabates offerred on eBAY.

A ledger is by far more secure than say a keystore, however the challenge then becomes is the ledger itself physically secure. Do you keep it in a safe area, who knows that you have it and how do you physically secure it, is fire damage a risk

Ledger and Trezor are both very secure (in fact, I find using them both to have a similar experience). Trezor used to have an exploit but it is now resolved as far as I know. I cannot speak for a keystore device.

Keeping any of them physically secure AFTER they are initiated is not that important, they both have built in PIN protection methods (Ledger reinitiaites after a PIN has been wrongly entered 3 times, Trezor doubles the interval in-between PIN attempts).

The other two risks that I consider to be much greater are the following:
1. the robbery in which you are pressured and made to reveal your PIN (with a gun against your head or your child's head). Here it may be helpful that you may hide your funds under one PIN and some other smaller amount under another PIN
2. that your recovery 24 word backup is found and disclosed. I would advice physically securing that particular piece of information with much greater care than the Ledger device itself
