My wife's blog is called CrohnieBolognaIBD.  Here's a link: http://crohniebolognaibd.blogspot.com/

Between blog posts, she does stuff on her Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/CrohnieBolognaIbd

My 4yo son is Autistic as well.  So she also posts a bunch of stuff about Autism and such.

Sucks to hear that the CCFA sends out spam.  I've found it is very hard to find a charity that doesn't waste a portion of their money.  That said, my wife helps out the doctors down here by counseling patients and providing a resource to those looking for patient-perspective information.  These doctors are all very involved with the Take-Steps thing.  Ultimately though, being involved gives her a strong sense of fulfillment.  And I try to help where I can.  Hell...if she can support me dumping a grand on a BFL miner, and never complaining about it for the year it took to arrive.... I can do a couple things to help out her passions.

Regarding my original question, I found this wall-of-text on Reddit:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1uccfz/i_am_a_tax_attorney_here_are_my_answers_to_the/

I haven't read through it yet as I'm too busy watching the playoffs.  But I imagine it'll be helpful.  But it sounds like if I do a 1:1 donation, like I am planning, then it'll have zero tax implications on my family.

I hope that's the case.  Let's just say when it comes to the IRS, I make very few assumptions :p

Hey all.  I know it has been a while since I posted.  I'm still looking to start a drive to raise funds for the local CCFA (Crohns & Colitis Foundation of America) here in San Diego.  I contacted the organization, and they do not take bitcoins yet.  (I'll continue working with them though)

Here's my previous post on this subject:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=272614.msg2940084#msg2940084

So...my question is this:  If I set up a charity and actually get a decent response (My wild dream is to raise 10 bitcoins), exchange the bitcoins for USD through coinbase, will it affect my taxes?  or does it become a wash?

Here's a link to the charity I was going to attempt to raise funds for:

The 'team' would be some combination of my wife's Crohns blog and bitcoin.  I imagine i'll have her hold up a giant printed bitcoin or something.  I dunno.  Still working on a concept that wouldn't come off as corney.

disclose all information and use third party authentication

That's what I was thinking of doing at first.  Perhaps I'll run the charity annually and just not expect too much until I build community trust.  The next big drive is a few months out, so I have some time to work out the details.

I'm going to contact the SD CCFA and see if they will accept donations in BTC first.  I think that would be ideal.  That way the organization could convert the BTC to USD if they wish, or just use BTC to fund programs/research on their own.

I appreciate the suggestions  Smiley  I'm afraid I have more enthusiasm than knowledge, so your insight is very appreciated.

Thanks Favdesu!  I was unaware of that site.

I'll try to contact Athene and see if they would be willing to set something up for btc.  Smiley

Hiya everybody!  I have a question for you.  I'm a longtime bitcoin fan/owner and forum lurker.  In that time, I have seen a lot of things that seem ... scammy to me.  What I wanted to pick your brains about is this:

If I wanted to create a wallet with the intent of turning the bitcoins over to a charity, how would I do this without seeming like a guy who is trying to abscond with your bitcoins for my own personal gain?

So far, the only idea I've come across is to try to get the organization ( http://www.ccfa.org/ ) to set up something on bitpay.  But I was hoping to have the donations flow through my wife's blog. (I guess this is my personal gain in this matter)  Unfortunately, the only way that would work is if I converted the bitcoins back to USD through coinbase or some other exchange.  Which is the part that would come off as a scam to me if I was a random forum lurker looking at this post from a crazy guy asking for your coins.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Hello!  Enjoy the mining!

I believe BFL has stated that they will refund your purchase only on a case-by-case basis.  And that pre-ordered products are non-refundable.

So, I guess the answer is maybe?  But they used the pre-order funds to develop their build processes, so they don't have the capital to return everyone's money.  Which was stated at the time of my purchase last October, I believe.

I bought last October, and I don't feel cheated.  Disappointed maybe, but not cheated.  As long as I get the miner sometime in the next three or four months, I should still realize a ROI.  Just not as much as if I had gotten it in November.
