Got one of the USB power meters today, Measured the current draw on the USB port.

Before Pencil Mod
0.42A draw
After running for 40 mins
 BPM 4:       |  2.45/ 2.45/ 2.44Gh/s | A:168 R:0+0(none) HW: 61/4.3%

After Pencil Mod
0.848Kohms
0.71A draw
After running for 30 mins
 BPM 3:       |  3.03/ 3.04/ 3.02Gh/s | A:185 R:1+0(.54%) HW: 94/6.8%

BFGMiner 3.6.0
Orico USB 3 hub
PortaPow USB Power Monitor

just speaking with a colleague, if the current draw is correct, we could see some USB hubs get overload with too many modded furies.

I'm going to check the draw against a usb 2 port tonight when I get home.

Well... my 10k resistors came in today, switched out the 22k resistor for a 10k on one of my good units.

BFGMiner 3.6.0 - 2.82 GH/s - 0 HW Errors
CGMiner 3.8.0 - 2.51 GH/s

I only let it sit for about 10 minutes on each mining software, so going to let it run for awhile in BFGMiner now.

Before the installation of the resistor this unit was consistently at 2.2GH/s

EDIT:

Temperature at heat-sink: 27.8 C / 82 F
Temperature at chip: 37.7 C / 100 F

tk1337,

after you replaced the 22K with a 10K, what was the resistance across R15 ?

Had some fun, Lite n easy delivery today, so I had some dry ice to 'burn'  Grin

guess whats in the bucket.

had penciled BPM 3's R15 down to 0.658Kohms

I would like to know how many milliamps it was drawing at the time  Wink

I ran it for about 15 mins, the dry ice didnt last long.

Luke,

does 3.6 contain the bugfixes from 3.5.2 ?

its going to be summer over here soon, I expect mine to fry Grin
7  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Blue Fury Support Thread. on: November 11, 2013, 11:56:45 AM
Kabopar,

I found drawing a line along the side was easiest, one to two lines did it for me.

my initial scribbling over the top was not necessary :-)

i'd measure the resistance again after, I'd not let it go below 0.84.

you might need the eraser and a couple of attempts to get the right result.

Pencil Mod development.

I modded a one of my other ones, from ~2.2Gh/s to 2.9Gh/s, it ran for about 12 hours before seeminly dropping off, got home and found it's heatsink was coming off  Grin  ( might replace it now, just apply heat Grin )

pencil mod, not very precise, don't push it too far. good thing is, you can use an eraser to undo it.

has anybody else taken a resistance measurement across R15 (in circuit) ? what do you get ? I saw 0.97Kohms before pencil modding, 0.87Kohms after, the one I took to 2.9Gh/s was around 0.84Kohms (too far).

To confirm will 4 BlueFury's work with a 2AMP usb hub? Can I put any more?

Now a second question. Why are the error rates so high?

Thanks.
I would only run 2, 3 at a pinch.
2Amp = 500ma x4
you need power for the hub itself, plus I find power supplies not always 100% efficent, ie 2amp actually only capable of 1.9amp.

Anyone else noticed that sometimes the LED's on the Blues just blink red on and off but sometimes they light up alternate yellow > orange > red and don't blink at all?

It doesn't make any difference to the hashing speed, just wondered why this was

I know in BGFMiner you can toggle an identify switch, which switches the miner from showing the yellow LED on or off, personally i prefer it off with a red flash for accepted work.
11  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Blue Fury Support Thread. on: November 10, 2013, 10:14:26 AM
Thanks for the info.  I tried but the in-circuit resistance stays at 0.97K, no matter how many HB lines I make.  So there was no difference in hashing either....
Did you need to remove any coating from the resistor?  (I don't think that they would apply conformal coating to a USB miner).

Cheers

nope, I did not remove any coating. I didnt draw lines, more like a child coloring in, scribble style :-)
12  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Blue Fury Support Thread. on: November 10, 2013, 06:20:58 AM
FrontLineFodder - nice work.  It looks like it is hotter after the mod, as you'd expect...

Can you please clarify which resistor was 'pencil modded' and any other hints/pics?

Cheers

As Before:
All warranties void perform at your own risk.
My view: these are a toy, I dont care much if I break them, do you ?

R15 was modded, I used what I had around, looked like HB lead in a pacer automatic pencil.
Not sure if it means anything, I threw the multimeter to measure the resistance across the resistor 'in circuit'. measured 0.97K ohms, after the mod it measures about 0.86Kohms.

It's been running for over 13 hours with the same speeds and error rate as I posted last night.
As my pics above show, make sure you have adequate cooling.

I'd like to get a USB current meter (like: http://gizmodo.com/usb-power-meter-tells-you-which-devices-will-kill-your-514285397 ) to see if there is an increase in power draw from the hub. anybody got reccommendations ?

Picture 1: Rear view

Rightmost BF was pencil modded, also furthest from the fan. my estimate was pretty good, middle fury was 39oC, right fury was 49oC.

Picture 2: Front View

Left most BF was pencil modded, Chip definatly gets hot on this side too, forgot the temp, notice the difference the distance from the fan has.

Picture 6: overall view

sensor on the erupters, significant difference the fans have, i'll have to re-arrance the fan layout.
Eruptors were exceeding 60oC

alignment was a litle bit out

I have some small heatshinks, might put one on the front of the pencil modded fury.
14  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Blue Fury Support Thread. on: November 09, 2013, 04:12:48 PM
Nice work! Promising results how did the cooling hold up?

They normally run much cooler than the erupters in the same hub. nothing accurate, i'd say 10 degrees hotter than normal, just bearable to hold the finger there.
Eruptors run too hot, touching them hurts.

I also have it furthest from the fans (should probably change that) so heat might be slightly exaggerated.

I might be able to get a photo of the hubs with my IR-Blue, wont be untill sunday evening though, I left it in the office.

Pencil mod, in case anybody else is stupid enough to do it.

Before Pencil Mod:
after 22 hours of hashing:
Code:
BPM 0:       |  1.99/ 1.99/ 1.83Gh/s | A: 6507 R: 56+0(.81%) HW:1182/3.3%

after Pencil Mod:
3 hours of hashing
Code:
BPM 0:       |  2.59/ 2.59/ 2.49Gh/s | A:1242 R: 6+0(.48%) HW: 371/4.5%

Since Vista SP1 Windows x64 requires drivers to be signed and you cannot permanently set testing mode.  If reinstalling some other OS isn't an option I'd use VirtualBox and pass the USB devices through to either some linux distro or a 32bit windows guest OS.

I use VirtualBox a bit, I have never tried passing these devices though, does it really work ?

There's another Amtel package that needs to be installed, from repository.

Unfortunately, the re-flash did nothing to help my 1.4GH/sec fury.  It's still only getting 1.4GH/sec.

I appreciate your efforts, Beastlymac.  Looks like I am going to have to box this thing up and send it to SSINC for replacement.

same here, installed the required package ( on ubuntu, sudo apt-get install dfu-programmer )
ran the update script ( needed to run as root so, sudo ./dfu-prog.sh ) #spent 5 mins trying to work out why it wasnt finding the fury  Embarrassed
upgraded each of the BF's one at a time, all successful.

four of my five are acceptable (at 2.2-2.4GH/s)
The lazy one is still below 2.0

my buddies one refuses to work, it reports hashing at 2.3GH/s however does not get any results accepted (invalid nonce), when mining using just his bad BF, the difficulty at 1 there is the occasional accepted result but 98% hardware error (using bfgminer 3.5.1). I flashed it however no change.

Second post updated with instructions on how to flash your device on ubuntu. Please bare in mind that it is at your own risk.

Hi BeastlyMac,

Is there any changelog for the firmware file ?

I have one BF hashing at under 2GH/s that I'll run it on regardless but what changes are there I should look out for ?

Thanks
