1  Other / Beginners & Help / ASIC Cube Block Erupter help on: February 26, 2014, 05:34:05 AM
I purchased two Erupter Cubes, one powered up no problem and is connected to the mining pool without any issues.

The second Erupter Cube will not power on for more than a second.  To verify it's not the PSU I am disconnecting the PCI Express power pins from the working Erupter and plugging them into the not working Erupter.

When I plug one in the SB Power light turns on and will stay on, when I plug in the second PCI power power pin the unit powers on or just a second, the fan spins up then the unit turns off.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this?  Do I need to reseat everything or what?

Edit: the fan for the non working miner will power up without the fuse plugged in, but as soon as I plug that fuse in it shuts off.
2  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive ASICMiner Cube Setup on: February 26, 2014, 04:09:02 AM
When I switch it on with one pcie cable in, the light comes on and the fan doesn't.

When I plug the second pcie cable in, the light and fan comes on and it quickly switches off.

In either case, I cannot connect through the router and use it.

I am using a 500w psu connected without a motherboard.

I read 500w was enough. If I bought a better psu, would it definitely work?
I am having a similar problem I have two of these Erupter cubes.

One works no problem but I'm working on getting the second one functional. If I unplug my working Erupter cube and plug the PCI connectors into the cube giving me trouble it turns on for just a second but then turns off.

Any ideas? Does it need to be reseated or something?

Yea but I was saying that your strategy could be useless. With price increasing as steadily as it has, you could've bought and then sold randomly and made a profit 9/10 times.
Did you sell all your BTC in the $200s because my script went off and definitely sold everything at $240.

So yes so long as the price was steadily increasing you might be better off holding your BTC for the long term but like I said how would you ever really know the appropriate time to sell.

There's not a buy or sell every 15 minutes just the opportunity IF the EMAs crossed during that period.  Below is a graphical representation of my most recent trades.

The blue line is the short EMA, the red line is the long EMA, and the orange line is the price.

A) Buy @ 143 USD
B) Sell @ 181 USD
C) Buy @ 188 USD

I understand that there's not a buy or sell every 15 minutes.

What I was saying is that when you bought at 143 or 188, it immediately could have dropped after that, immediately triggering the sell and a loss, your system claims "it is not likely to based on this mathematical relationship..."

This could happen at any of your buy points... your claim is that based on long term vs short term averages you are finding good buy points.

Sure, the system mitigates losses intelligently, the arbitrary portion is claiming a long-term and short-term exponential average crossover can divine future behavior of bitcoin valuation...

for example, it would be interesting to test this system on the 30$ -> $2 crash. How much would it have gained/lost if you applied it to a pre-bubble + post bubble burst. What would the returns be in the years after that? etc.

The sell at 188 happened because there was a drop in the price causing the short EMA to pass back under the long EMA, but I do understand what you are saying.  If that downward price fluctuation was just a temporary price drop due to a large sell or whatever reason then the EMA may sell unnecessarily.  But what you are referring to is called whipsaws.

I do agree I would like to see how highly volatile price changes would affect the ROI.  I can run simulations to see how much I would have made using historical data.

Yea but I was saying that your strategy could be useless. With price increasing as steadily as it has, you could've bought and then sold randomly and made a profit 9/10 times.
It wouldn't be useless it just wouldn't be the most efficient/effective means to maximize your profit.  That is if you are extremely confident in the price still going to continue to climb and you are in fact correct in your assumption.

But then you also have the issue of determining when to sell, you sell to early you miss out on a whole bunch of profits, same goes for if you sell too late.

Right... that's his point. There is no "system" therefore your strategy that returned

"I created a trading bot which uses the last trading price to calculate two exponential moving averages based on a 15 minute periods. It's been very effective since the start of April I've had 9.8% gain, 27.6% gain, a 26.5% gain, and I'm currently sitting at a 20% gain where I bought in at $188."

...is arbitrary, because 15 minute windows down to any 1 transaction is still a guessing game, and you can provably show times where that would amount in an overall loss. Assuming you're not buying at every single pulse, the odds are basically that buying is going to be at a value lower than it will be in the future.

It's not quite arbitrary using one short and one long exponential moving average you can tell when the recent average breaks out of the long average, that is to say the short EMA crosses over the long EMA your script buys, when the long crosses under the short average (short EMA crosses under the long EMA) you sell.  The 15 minute window you mentioned earlier is not so much a window as it is the length of time before checking the current ticker data and recalculating the current short and long EMAs.

There's not a buy or sell every 15 minutes just the opportunity IF the EMAs crossed during that period.  Below is a graphical representation of my most recent trades.

The blue line is the short EMA, the red line is the long EMA, and the orange line is the price.

Absolutely, what kind of results were you looking for ROI, buy/sell gains, or what in particular?

Great!
Actually, questions 1,2,4,6,7. I am really interested about guarantees worth mentioning and biggest concerns.
Thank you

Gotcha I'll make sure to post all the result in that thread once the responses stop coming in.  If you'd like to subscribe to the thread I'll post them there.

Very nice of you. Thank you.
My pleasure, thanks for taking the time to fill out the survey.

I'd post a link to the responses that are updated as they are filled out but I'll have to remove any personal information in case anybody includes any before publicly releasing the results.

Bitcoin is skyrocketing. I would hope the crash is not going to come but it seems there is a spiral of greed and it will continue until the point where greed turns to fear and fear turn to panic.

The bubble could crash while I sleep and there is nothing that would slow a Bitcoin crash.

Do you have any idea to prevent this scenario?

I am thinking to develop a Bitcoin price alert that will send SMS to a mobile phone if the price fall to a certain limit.

Does that sound a good idea?

I've been considering adding public access to my online bitcoin trading service which could not only alert you of the criteria being met, but actually place the set stop-loss order (or buy stop order for that matter).

If you have any input I'm trying to find out about the bitcoin community's general attitude, expectations, and thoughts on the subject which you can fill out here.

It would be nice if you could share your result.

I answer your survey right away...

Well, rather than come in here and dump on your idea, I'll just say I'm interested. I've pondered setting up something similar but who has the time..
Nothing wrong at all with dumping on an idea, if it's really a good idea then it should be able to stand up to any potential criticism.

You're all more than welcome to ask any questions or bring up any points you feel valid.

Okay, well compared to the market you didn't do that great then  Kiss Just buy and hold would have outperformed you easily.
Try make the bot so that it increases actual bitcoins, not just fiat value.
Yes but hindsight is always 20/20.

Of course if you knew the market was going up and no matter high it hit you were confident it did not peak yet and would still trend upwards then it may very well be in your best interest to hold for the long term.

However I'm sure everybody is astonished that bitcoin is still climbing strong and nobody knows which peak will be the last one and when is really the best time to sell.

It's wise to diversify your investments through different trading strategies to hedge any potential drops in the market.

Eh, why would you make money for us for free? That is obviously too good to be true and probably a scam.

BTW, how hard can it be to trade bitcoin when it only goes upwards anyways? Cheesy
Who said anything about free?  Tongue

So, basically, you want people to deposit their money into your site, so you can use their money for the trading? For a fee. Nice way for you to earn money, and at the same time letting the "customers" take the whole risk.
You're on the right track; however, I wouldn't ever expect people to deposit money their money directly into a third party service.

What happens is MtGox allows their users to grant API access to their account, the trading bot would only require get_info and trade API access so nobody would ever have access to withdraw/transfer money from the account.  The API access would be limited trading between USD and BTC.

But in regards to the rest you are correct, let people who would like to automatically set their own trade criteria set the risk and take a small cut of any profit.

I notice bitcoin-24's trading engine is always going down, and now from time to time the cloudflare page comes up...is it under attack?

edit: it's always on and off, probably the influx of new users too much for the server...
CloudFlare is one of the best at mitigating DDOS attacks.

They immediately stopped in attack last week that generated 300Gbps of traffic. source

CloudFlare also reported the truth when Syria government cut off their own citizen's access from the internet which Syria's government lied about. source

You're right about mid/long term holding so long as the price does continue to climb.  /crosses fingers

When you think about it, when most users use this service, how will gains even occur?
Gains would occur as the market price fluctuates but perhaps I am misunderstanding the question.
16  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How do you day trade? on: April 09, 2013, 05:05:39 PM
That's comparing the purchase price in USD to the sale price in USD.  That also doesn't include fees though which would reduce the profits by a percent or so.

18  Economy / Trading Discussion / Interest in an automated bitcoin trading website? Survey and details inside. on: April 09, 2013, 03:45:56 PM
A couple months ago a friend and I each began developing our own online trading service in order to compare and contrast the advantages of each implementation method, logic, and buy/sell criteria.

Now that enough time has passed we can confidently say we have both been successful in our ventures and are gaining a fair amount of returns having numerous buy/sells with double digit percentage returns (some over 25%).

We had initially not planned on publicly releasing our trading platforms but we wanted to put out a feeler to gauge interest in online traders in general.

I do realize that these traders are a dime a dozen and people are constantly proposing and promising their trading platforms, but the purpose of this is not to inquire about my trader in particular just online bitcoin trading platforms as a whole.

More specifically, I wanted to get a general overview of the bitcoin community's attitude, interest, expectations, and some general input of online bitcoin trading platforms.

Please note this survey is not specifically for any personal future endeavors but general expectations for automated trading services by this particular segment of the bitcoin community.

Automated bitcoin trading survey

If desired I would gladly post the results after removing any identifying information.

Thank you in advanced, I appreciate your time and your input.
