bump for a great use case
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Acorn M.2 FPGA based GPU Accelerator on: July 14, 2018, 02:48:59 AM
We ordered some to pair with our GTX 1080 Ti models (and a few Vegas).  The plan is to have 6 Acorn 215+ paired with 6 GTX 1080 Ti on a ASUS Prime 370-A motherboard, using the ASUS Hyper x6 addon card for 4 Acorns (since that motherboard does support Bifurcation) and 2 Acorns on the M.2 slots on the motherboard itself.  If need be we can spread them out over more motherboards since we currently have more motherboards then GPUs on hand.

How would that work with only 3 x16 slots 8/8/4 and 4 x1 slots (which to my understanding are useless for the acorn)?

Also, what is everyone else intending to use for a mobo? I can't seem to find any affordable options with more than 3 x16 slots and 2 M2 slots, one of which is usually in the way of a x16 slot.

5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ravencoin on: May 16, 2018, 11:59:54 PM
I think ravencoin does not have good popularity, the proof is not much to talk about, as you make on topics, popularity in forums as well as outside forums, as a tool of success. this is the proof of ravencoin. may be less good promotions, therefore less development.

Yeah I'm aware its not all that popular outside of the gpu mining community after all it is fairly new and isn't on any major exchanges yet. I was mainly looking to get opinions on it from non-miners who are familiar with the project. Always good to get an outside perspective as those mining it are more inclined to be biased towards it, myself included.

Just wanted to see what everyone thought of this coin. It is pretty big in the mining community but I don't see much talk of it outside that (1 result searching alt discussion and alt speculation).

Way too expensive
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: X16R - RVN - Miner head to head test log on: April 25, 2018, 05:33:45 PM
Thanks for the testing, it has been very helpful.

Anyway you could do more testing in regards to overclock (specificially TDP and core clock)?

I have a few Zotac Amp Extreme GPUs in this test rig, they're factory OC'd. With as little as +100 core, they'll crash. So, unfortunately I can't reliably test core OC

Perhaps compare -100 or -150 to +0? Seems it would give a good idea on how much core clock effects the hash rate.

10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How much would it cost to start mining??? on: April 23, 2018, 12:13:51 PM
Edit: missed the part you wanted a pc for regular use.

That's how I started, you can really just build any pc with a good gpu for this. CPU, mem, and ram doesn't really matter. If you want to game you'll want to atleast get a decent cpu and 8gb ram. You could even get a case/mb that will fit 2 gpu's if you want so you can add second card later, but if you plan to go beyond 2 you're probably best off just building a dedicated rig.

If you're willing to spend a little of money and want to go beyond cpu mining, you could build the barebones rig (PSU, MB, CPU, HDD, mem, risers, etc) and just add a pair of cards rather than 6 or more. Then if you want to continue all you have to do is just add cards as you can afford/want to. I'd just recommend getting a motherboard that will support at least 5 cards. For PSU you could start with a 750 and then add another 750 if you expand, i'd just look for one with at least 4 vga cables (EVGA 750 g1/g2/g3/p2 fits the bill). You can probably get everything but gpu's for $400-500 depending on part selection if you go this route, maybe even less.

Beware its addictive, i went from 1 card to 18 cards in 4 months lol
If profitability is not your concern and just for a hobby or a test

You could start mining at a low or no cost and just use your existing PC's, CPU mining at the most

Best gear always depend on your requisites

you may require:

- lowpower cost with a decent hash

- Higher Hash and dont need a low electricity cost

- Low price gear with a decent hash over a certain coin algo

- High price Gear with a decent hash with a wide range of algo

- Higher hash, Low power cost, High pricing gear with risk of low or "0" resale value

basically, mining is not a want to buy candies in a store and choosing with a best taste from other people then buy

you have to consider your own environment and own taste which suitable and defines whats best for you
At the moment it isn't the peofit it is just the experience.
I just want to try mining but currently I only have a laptop so I am asking what specs is good for mining in PC ,
Because I also want to buy a PC and maybe use it into mining in the future so I could save some money right now if I buy a mining pc rather than just a regular one then after a month or two I would get interested in mining then I would have to build another one.

Before making an investment, I would suggest learning more about mining and profitability. I see a lot of people throwing themselves head first in this when they don't have enough knowledge about it and end up regretting it.

So, I would suggest mining with your CPU first rather than buying everything you need to start your first mining rig. Check this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2891680.0
Thanks for the suggestion I would look into it.
It is really helpful and thanks for the concern.
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Using old laptop for "cold storage" on: April 15, 2018, 10:36:31 PM
It may work out if its your private laptop and no one else has access to it, otherwise i will recommend you to use a physical wallet, they are more secure and personal.

Yeah, but he is using an "old" laptop.

What if his old laptop is infected with a rat? or any other shit that maybe can compromise his bitcoins/coins that he is going to store?

I would prefer to spend $100 and buy a ledger wallet.

I own a ledger, though most newer coins are not supported (bitcoin private and ravencoin for example).
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Using old laptop for "cold storage" on: April 15, 2018, 10:27:15 PM
So I have an old laptop I want to dedicate to store coins that are not compatible with hardware wallets. The wifi card takes about 30 seconds to unhook, so the plan is get my wallets setup and leave the laptop offline until I want to sell/trade. I know this isn't the absolute most secure way but feel it is a good compromise of convenience and security (especially compared to just storing in wallet on gaming pc). Was wondering if anyone else is doing this and if so how they went about it as well as had a few questions.

1. Ubuntu or windows 7/10? I know there's a lot less malware out there for linux though I like the ability of windows to do full disk encryption and am also more familiar with windows.

2. Should I connect to the internet to update OS/download wallets after installing the OS and then go offline to setup wallets and backup private keys or should I get the wallets setup (transferred on thumb drive from potentially unsecure computer) and keys backed up before the laptop is ever connected to the internet and then go about updating the OS?
I think it's good idea even for usual crypto for those who hasn't modern hardware wallets.
But it strongly recommended to upgrade your HDD or SSD.
Then reinstall clean OS and antimalware.... and you sholdn't connect it to web
Many wallets provide off-line signatures. MEW for example.

Why do you say to upgrade the hdd and what do you mean by provides offline signatures?

Is it really better to copy a copy of the wallet downloaded from a potentially infected computer/thumb drive to the offline pc than just go online to download directly from github?
