1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I hear change coming... on: March 22, 2014, 11:07:14 PM
How the hell do you have time to explain Bitcoin to technically illiterate people?  It takes about an hour just to get to the point that the person replies, "I have no idea what you're talking about".  The simplest method I could come up with was saying, "It's like internet file sharing except instead of everyone having the same movie file, everyone has the same distributed accounting ledger".

Some people are just natural teachers/leaders. It takes practice, good public speaking skills, and the ability to assess and properly scale the level of detail in your description. It takes practice...

You can't just parrot the same description to every person. You need to be able to communicate with the person while you explain...

It's not hard to explain Bitcoin. Bitcoin is simple, it's a highly secured network of millions of people who use the network to transfer wealth without the oversight, costs, limits, controls, or permissions of a bank. Bitcoin is cheap, fast, secure, and it's decentralized.

When people don't understand Bitcoin you could compare it at the most basic level to the internet of money.

Sorry, but that's a bs post.

Doesn't matter if you're Richard Feynman, most people will not understand the subject matter and just have to take your word for it on whether it's a secure/legit system or not.

This is not the same thing as actually getting someone to understand it that has no idea about technology.  It's basically an impossible task.  Most people don't know how paper money works either, and don't care, so it's the same difference.

Ive explained bitcoin to many people who dont use computers or smartphones but they could understand the idea of encrypted and secure money  called bitcoin that can be split into 100,000,000 things called satoshis, that is impossible to duplicate and can be sent anywhere in the world in a moment. you dont need to be "smart" to see "smart" people will use it and that it has value. many people have asked me, " so it sounds like digital gold?" and I smile saying to them "yes, actually thats exactly what the goal was and what many people think of it as." then you simply explain to them its a free program out of the control of any CEO or government that they can use without fees, and the average blue collar person is already on board.

maybe Im just good at talking about it, and maybe its that I speak with dozens of new people every week because thats just the sort of life I live.
Id say if you cant explain something to someone it has less to do with their ability to understand, and more to do with a individuals ability to articulate a thought.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I hear change coming... on: March 22, 2014, 10:56:16 PM
every time Im out an about talking with people I always try and work bitcoin into the conversation. If money is going to trade hands I try pretty hard to bring btc up and Id say 90% of people in my day to day get told about it. Generally nobody has ever heard of it, or if they have they have a bad impression of it from the news. in the past week 5 people in a row had heard of it and seemed to be using it, or thinking about it. I asked yesterday at a family Chinese restaurant and the manager said he had been trying to get his family to accept it. The man I was talking with seemed in his late 30's-40's, saying 70's -80's age range parents didnt trust it. He then thanked me for asking them to take it an said they will look into it harder. I was at the insurance office and the agent had never heard of btc, but after 5 min of talking she was hooked and understood how much btc can help business. the encounters go on, but this week an last week have been better than the past 6 months as far as people I talk to knowing about btc.

I really feel like btc will be in local shops soon, talk to small store owners, and inform them about the fact they can use coinbase or bitpay to easily get dollars for bitcoin and gain NEW business.

don't just talk about the benefits of bitcoin, tell the chinese restaurant manager to go to bitpay, sign up and register his bank account as being the payment address. and watch the tutorials of th many ways he can then get bitcoin from his customers, via bitpay.
(i want to see a reply within the next couple weeks informing this thread that the chinese restaurant and insurance office have gone to the bitpay website and signed up because you showed them how)

same goes for the insurance office.

as for hearing random people talk about it in your area. if i tell a friend about bitcoin last week, then the following week he will of course tell you he had heard about it.

tell 10 people last week and an 11th person that one of those people know, would have been told by them. on average out of 10 people that do not care much about it. only one person passes the information on (compared to you, a passionate person telling 10 people (1000% multiplication))
so even if you think people dont care there is statistically proven a 10% chance your information will be passed on.

so if have talked about it to lets say 5 strangers each day from 6 months ago, then every 2 days (10 people) an 11th person would know about it purely by word of mouth. every 20 days 100 people know about it directly through you and 10 people indirectly
now the average person has a small circulation of friends and those friends do not want to hear about it over and over, so i suspect the amount of new people and conversations about bitcoin died down from 5 day to alot less, for a while.

but your friends who have friends are keeping the chain of bitcoin conversations going (analogy: chain letters)
so lets fast forward 5 months to bring you to this week. even with a 10% rate of passing it on. your community would have heard about it from someone they know.after all they say everyone is connected to every with only 6 intermediaries (6 degree's of separation/kevin bacon)

so kep up th discussions, but dont just talk about it, show them how to set up a wallet. even if they dont use it. they will know how to get to it, should anyone want to throw them a bitcoin donation in the future

I actually did say all those things haha, he seemed to already know half of what I said anyways though and that he was already on board to accept it, and I feel that me as a customer asking to give him more business via bitcoin seemed to 'tip the scales"  I do expect to see them accepting it here soon because Im going to be asking my friends to go in and say they want to eat here with bitcoin then leave.

If somebody wants a custom tobacco smoking device that can also be worked out. just post or PM a description of what you would want and how much BTC you offer, I can ask the glass blower if hes willing to make it.

the glass is not currently signed, but if you are the sort that likes the marker to sign the work ( as I generally do ) Im sure he would.
5  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-03-18] Bees Brothers Honey Business Takes Bitcoin on: March 21, 2014, 01:01:14 AM
I bought from them in december and gave the caramels to people for xmas gifts. pretty tasty, good easy site to use with bitcoin even for a first time user! made me a believer for sure that bitcoin is here to stay
6  Economy / Goods / glass art for bitcoin on: March 20, 2014, 09:02:52 PM

Is there any interest in glass art? glass mugs, marbles, and other items can be made if people have interest in those things as well!

Im thinking that BTC 0.12 - 0.15 is fair for something like this? let me know what yall think.

they sound more like pedos to me almost... haha

I hate it when people think Im a cop, I goto a show, hoping to find some molly, (dont know anyone with in it my real life) try to enjoy to show but really with I had something to set off the party, I feel and look odd because Im one of the few people not trippin nuts, I then try to find people I can tell are rollin an probably selling so I walk up an ask them for rolls or molly and they freak the fuck out and leave the rave, telling me they will "be right back stay here while i got some from a friend"

ughh gotta love how it goes...
8  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: So if were to buy an ASIC, what should it be? on: March 12, 2014, 05:22:52 PM

whats the $/gh?
9  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: whats the current preprder situation..? on: March 12, 2014, 04:43:39 PM
You're doomed on any pre-order when difficulty is rising 50% a month. Just a 1 month manufacturer delay can really kill your ROI plans! Tongue

thank you for this NEW information! as you may have noticed from previous posts, I have never seen this...

/sigh

does anyone bother reading before posting?

I understand many companies scammed people, hashfast, bfl, and many others. My personal experience with preorders however has been good. When I first bought a asic, it was a PREORDER from KNC, I did tons of research of all companies around that time, and considered and turned down bfl, hashfast, and all others in favor of knc because they were the only onesaccording to the research I did at the time, that was likely to follow through, and they did.

What Im looking for now is companies that are doing pre-orders that are new to the bitcoin mining industry. IF you dont know of any, or you only know of scams, just dont reply because YOU HAVE ZERO INFORMATION ON THE TOPIC. thanks =)

Bitmain has hinted that a follow on to their popular Antminer S1 is coming in the next few months if I were you I'd hold out for that.

There seem to be a ton of Chinese 1Th/s clones coming out as well as some companies out of Europe that are making custom boards based on BitFury, Bitmine or Avalon chips but none of them are being sold at a price that is attractive even for immediate delivery and most of these aren't expected for another 30 days at least.  ASICMiner was also soliciting interest in their next generation stuff a few weeks back but no word on when they will accept orders or pricing.

If you want to take a huge gamble you could put in an order for "second gen" Hashfast or CoinTerra equipment which is really just their first gen chips with the bugs worked out of the PCB.  Hashfast is essentially a soft scam though and CoinTerra while they have been more honest in their dealings haven't exactly lived up to their predictions.

excellent post, thanks for your opinions and tips.

I agree hashfast, and cointerra are no goes, to me they struck out with the track record they have of lies. Im going to continue looking, but for now it does seem like things are in between stages. I may be able to jump to a good thing in April though =)

What are the brands where I get something besides a 3d Render that doesn't cost too terribly much and actually hashes decently? or should i just stick to scrypt rigs?

most people are saying the antminer from bitmaintech
11  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why don't they legalize mushrooms next? on: March 11, 2014, 10:28:43 PM
Wow, just wow. Assuming problems in one country are a reflection for other countries. What is your point exactly?
Should we in your opinion just ignore the fact that people get bad trips and kill themselves because there are other drugs causing problems as well? How small minded Wink

No, you should stop ignoring the fact that making a substance illegal doesn't stop people from using said substance; otherwise, every single drug on that list which is illegal should have no data available, assuming laws were effective in stopping people from taking drugs.

Which it isn't.  All it does is make it very dangerous for people trying to self-medicate prior trauma and makes further victims out of victims.  Instead of prosecuting these people, why don't you offer to help them?  Why do you advocate the use of violence against them?  How does putting a person in jail or handing them a hefty fine somehow, in your mind, equate to help?  If they suicide any other way, do you feel good knowing they, at least, did not die because of overdose?  Does the threat of any of this mean the individual will somehow get the help needed?  Because the evidence says otherwise.

Feel free to stop feigning empathy for overdose victims.

I know that every place is differant, but around these parts, the only way for law enforcement to mess with you over mushies is if youve got large amounts and are clearly distributing them. its fine for them to stay classified as they are, since spores are legal, and whoever needs them for self medicating should just grow their own. the growing process is more rewarding than casually walking into a store and buying some mushies to trip on, ahem, medicate with.

I think the system in place (for mushies atleast) is fine.

If were talking about all drugs in general, Id have to agree with you. nothing stops people from getting what they want (think heroin) and nothing will stop them from getting a (unpure) product. in the case of chemical drugs Id advocate large state ran labs. This would save 1000's of lives per year, and stop untold amounts of damage to the environment caused by inproper disposal of reagents and irresponsible sourcing of regents.
It would also remove the fear of getting help to end peoples addiction because they are scaired of incriminating themselves as drug users.

I guess Id amend my position of saying mushies should be kept illegal , and say it should be completely decriminalized, not sold in stores, and only put people in jail for distribution.
only sell chemical drugs in stores (with taxation) and put all buyers on lists keeping track in a database the purchasing amounts and regular talks with a counselor for people who use more than X% above average, and other checks for high freqency buyers to ensure they are not distributing to others including minors.

Got more chance of dieing reading this post than you have with magic mushrooms  Roll Eyes

Explain how then? You guys make me laugh bet ya never even tried them.

I dont know about how easy it is to die from mushrooms, but I know Ive never woken up (thankful I DID wake up..) shaking/rocking back and forth with a mouth full of fluid and curled into a ball reading a forum post.  that day is pretty scairy in hindsight but was a wicked cool trip at the time.. was in a totally differant world something like the room xavior built in the x-men movie
13  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why don't they legalize mushrooms next? on: March 11, 2014, 09:43:02 PM
mushrooms are legal enough, sure you cant buy any kind you want in stores, but you can buy many online that are legal and psycoactive online.

and they are very easy to grow, and very fun at that! I learned a ton about the world around me growing mushrooms, and gained a respect for nature I did not have before. mushrooms also taught me to NOT grow them, and I respect the fact they are illegal. I think anyone who wants them is best off growing them for themselves and learning what they have to teach. besides, after you grow them you will find many more who are willing to talk about growing them and you will no longer have to try as hard to find them, if you dont learn how to find them in nature.
14  Other / Off-topic / Re: You think it's worth it? on: March 11, 2014, 09:30:40 PM
I nearly bought some, but I decided it would not be worth it due to the fact that the company is shipping out so many of them. to me, they are trying to unload the last of what they have to prepare for the next generation gear. those do not have 5 months mining left in them (by my judgement alone) because I believe KnC will ship the neptune well before then, and others will also be flooding the market with 1T+ units well before those 5 months are up. you may see $ ROI but I think you would be lucky to see 50%-75% roi in bitcoin if you bought today, maybe you will see profit in bitcoin though, hard to say for sure.

the majority believe its worth it however, and its the best deal Ive found on the market so if your itching to buy one, you may as well =)
15  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: whats the current preprder situation..? on: March 11, 2014, 08:00:22 PM
Ive heard mixed things about scrypt asics, some people are saying the asics are not worth it to buy a asic because they are not much better than gpu setups, does anyone have any imput on this?

Avg profit from multipools has dropped from a 30 day high of .0013BTC/MH/day to .00063BTC/MH/day, and it's still dropping. Hash rates and difficulties are going up, coin value is not. They are more or less cost equivalent with GPUs in terms of $/KH, but energy usage is obviously much lower. Space is the issue, as these alpha grade products are not the refined devices BTC miners are used to getting. Best to wait for the market and GS prices to stabilize before doing ROI calcs. Anyone jumping in today is just riding on faith that they will make their investment back.

thanks for this detailed post.

for me, space is not a issue, I would be willing to give a 10x10 bedroom to the project, if a rig so large can be build with 10 btc.

cooling is not a problem, I have 2 large duct fans that each move 720 cubic feet of air per minute, and one smaller fan that moves 300 cubic feet per minute, that would be able to easily exchange the rooms air. I have 220 wired up to the outlets of this room so big appliances can be easily ran. I had hoped to get a neptune in there but I was not able to get funds lined up in time...

You should take a look @ chinese maufacturers starting to flood market with dozens of petahashes of hashrate with cheap miners...

this is exactly why Im trying to stay away from the antminer, it LOOKS like a good deal, but I know that huge hashing power is likely to hit soon. this is what is edging me into the preorder area, the hope of beating the chip size. maybe I should just wait a few months though for the dust to settle though. the Chinese will force research and development of better technology if anyone else wants to stay competetive, and that was something i was hoping to help fund in return for a good miner in the future anyways..

18  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: blockchain.info down? on: March 11, 2014, 06:10:51 PM
You all need to store your own coins and not rely on a web-wallet.....

promoJo

true, but web wallets are so cool!  I just want to believe bitcoin is the future and use it carelessly like its normal and safe. too bad its not so mainstream and secure yet...

Right!  And until there is a TASK FORCE or standards based approach like (PCI COMPLIANCE) I think we will always be at risk and get GOXXED.   Multi billion dollar exchange and they don't have proper security in place.  Security is not a bolt-on.  ITS A REQUIREMENT /rant.

promoJo

I like the sound of "task force" in this context, a exchange or mining pool could easily create by setting aside a small amount of block fees or transaction fees to a wallet that would be paid out to those who discover ways to make the community more secure. I would mine at a pool , or trade at a exchange that implimented something like this.
19  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: blockchain.info down? on: March 11, 2014, 05:47:56 PM
Is this only for maintenance or some thing serious happen to this blockchain

oh ya, its bad bro! sell all your coins at market right now!  haha no I assume its just a regular thing like they are under ddos or some someone spilled coffee on a server (blizzard jokes?)
20  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: whats the current preprder situation..? on: March 11, 2014, 05:44:27 PM
I know many on this forum have been burnt by preorders, but I thinking thats about the only way to get a good $/gh ratio. I preordered from knc and was happy with what I got so I feel that there may be some others out there worth supporting.

It's only way to loose money. On 1 side you can have good $/GHs ratio at the time of order, on the other side at the time of shippment (probably late shippment) this ratio may (will) be obsolete.

FUDSTER!  I made good money with my knc preorder thank you very much. I mean sure, many will cheat you such as bfl did, but I dont want to let a few bad apples ruin it when some companies have proven preorders are the only way to actually get big returns. I made several times my investment with a KNC preorder...
