All businesses accepting Bitcoin in Arnhem use a point of sale system (BitKassa) that allows them to easily accept bitcoins, without having to deal with any technicalities or security issues whatsoever. Completely hassle free.
 
As a paying customer, you'll need a mobile wallet that can scan QR codes. The Android Wallet by Andres Schildbach or Mycelium Wallet are both excellent choices.
 
Apple has been banning Bitcoin Wallet apps lately (shame on them, blocking innovation like this ) so on iOS you'll have to stick with mobile-friendly web wallets like Coinpunk or Pheeva. On Windows Phone, the Bitcoin App (which internally uses a coinbase or blockchain.info wallet) seems to do a decent job.
 
 

Not yet, they're currently receiving their Bitcoin payments in Euros. Of course we'd rather see everyone not just accepting but also keeping and spending bitcoins, but this is a necessary step in the migration phase that we're still in. Going straight into Bitcoin is still a bridge too far for many people, and we hope this is a great way to help the mass audience adopting Bitcoin one step at a time.
 
By the way, as for spending bitcoins, versus the objection that some people have who rather keep their bitcoins and spend their fiat: we always recommend the 'double stimulus' approach. Pay anything you can with Bitcoin, and buy back a similar amount of bitcoins with fiat. This way you stimulate the Bitcoin economy (by actually spending coins, and paying for goods and services with Bitcoin) AND you stimulate the demand for Bitcoin (by buying them on an exchange or trading platform). Win-win!

Hopelijk wordt Arnhem Bitcoinstad een groot succes, en een mooie stap vooruit in het mainstream gaan van Bitcoin. Komt allen, het is aan ons als Bitcoin community om uit te dragen hoe goed Bitcoin in de praktijk werkt. En dat je er gewoon super makkelijk een hapje en drankje mee kunt afrekenen (ipv drugs of wapens of andere onzin). De ATM wordt nog geconfigureerd as we speak. Het kan wel eens aardig druk worden daar, dus je kunt voor de zekerheid natuurlijk ook van te voren al wat bitcoins in je telefoon zetten (gewoon kopen op de diverse Nederlandse sites met iDeal).

En dan later op de dag of avond natuurlijk alsnog even langs te Bitcoin ATM, al is het maar voor de fun
 
 
Nee, je hebt wel je eigen wallet nodig. De café's en restaurants hebben in principe geen eigen wallet (dat is nog te omslachtig voor ze), zij hebben een systeem wat een QR toont, en daarheen maak je als klant je betaling over (met je eigen wallet dus).

(Maar dan nog, zelfs als ze wel een eigen wallet gebruikten, sowieso is het geen goed idee om te betalen middels een paper wallet met je eigen private key er op!)
 
 
Heel goed, hopelijk slaat het aan en accepteren ze bij een volgende editie ook altcoins zoals FTC
 
 
Mensen, zorg voor een goed gevulde wallet op je telefoon, zodat je bij veel zaken wat kunt eten of drinken, want de bij-de-meeste-zaken-afgerekend contest wordt de moeite waard!

De locatie van de ATM is zo goed als zeker, maar we moeten nog even de laatste puntjes afstemmen. We communiceren dat zo spoedig mogelijk via www.ArnhemBitcoinstad.nl en op @Bitcoinstad.

Wat je nodig hebt is een mobiele wallet. In principe volstaat ieder apparaat met internet: smartphone, tablet of netbook, of zelfs een iPod Touch. Een Android phone of tablet is wel aan te raden, want op Android zijn een aantal zeer prettig werkende Bitcoin Wallet apps. Voor beginners zou ik de Bitcoin Wallet van Andreas Schildbach of Mycelium Wallet aanraden.

Op iPhone/iPad is recent de Bity Wallet in de App Store verschenen, maar daar heb ik zelf nog geen ervaring mee.

En anders kun je sowieso altijd met een web wallet uit de voeten zoals Blockchain.info Wallet, maar dat werkt net iets minder handig (zeker met QR codes scannen e.d.)

Ik weet niet exact welk model ATM er precies komt te staan, maar we hebben er op de Bitcoin 2014 convention een aantal gezien en meestal is het een kwestie van: euro's briefgeld er in, de QR van je wallet voor de scanner houden, en de bitcoins komen in je wallet.

Als je alleen bitcoins hebt in een wallet op je computer thuis, dan kun je er online niet mee afrekenen. Net als met contant geld, als je dat thuis laat liggen kun je er ook niet mee uit eten
Het handige van Bitcoin is dan wel weer dat je je geld op meerdere plekken tegelijk kunt hebben.

Uiteraard kun je ook gewoon van te voren (of ter plekke als dat nodig zou zijn) online bitcoins kopen via één van de vele Bitcoin bedrijven in Nederland, zoals Bitonic, BTCDirect, Bitmymoney, Josien, Bitbuy, Bitplaats en andere. Je koopt dan bitcoins met iDeal, dus eventueel kun je voor de zekerheid even je e-dentifier meenemen.

Alle café's en restaurants die meedoen hebben een Bitcoin betaalsysteem waarmee ze een QR tonen die jij als klant kunt scannen, je drukt op betalen, en klaar. Het is sneller, veiliger, goedkoper, en -als je het eenmaal gedaan hebt- makkelijker dan pinnen, credit cards, paypal of contant.

 
Op woensdag 28 mei (de dag voor hemelvaartsdag) maakt de acceptatie van Bitcoin weer een mooie stap voorwaarts: Arnhem Bitcoinstad!

Bitcoinbezitters, gebruikers, fans en nieuwsgierigen: komt allen op woensdag 28 mei naar Arnhem om een terrasje te pakken, uit eten te gaan, een paar kroegen in te duiken, en te betalen met Bitcoin!

15 horecagelegenheden (tot nu toe, mogelijk doen er nog meer mee) in de binnenstad van Arnhem gaan betalingen in Bitcoin accepteren. Zie voor info en een overzicht op welke plekken je straks terecht kunt met je bitcoins:

Bereikbaarheid: alles is vlakbij Arnhem Centraal Station, waar tevens een grote parkeergarage is.

Fun facts:

• Sommige restaurants hebben al aangegeven dat ze speciaal voor deze dag nog wat speciale dingen op de kaart zullen zetten (denk aan een Broodje Bitcoin of Satoshi Schotel, etc).
• Er komt ook een Bitcoin Pinautomaat te staan waar je ter plekke je wallet kunt bijvullen, dus je kunt het zo bont maken als je wilt die dag
• Verder wordt er o.a. nog een leuke contest gehouden, waar degene die bij de meeste horecazaken afrekent met zijn of haar Bitcoin wallet, een leuke prijs wint (wellicht een bedrag aan bitcoins, wat merchandise, en wie weet een tegoedbon voor een ruimtevlucht met Virgin Galactic ).

Dit maakt Arnhem gelijk tot één van de grotere steden qua Bitcoin-acceptatie, en we hopen dat dit een bijdrage levert aan de groei van Bitcoin tot mainstream betaalmiddel!

At Wednesday May 28th (the day before Ascension Day) the mainstream acceptance of Bitcoin takes another step forward: Arnhem Bitcoincity!

Bitcoin owners, users, fans, and anyone interested: come and visit Arnhem at May 28th for this special occasion, have some food and drinks in various restaurants and bars, and pay with Bitcoin!

15 local bars, grand cafés, and restaurants (so far, more still to join) in Arnhem center will be accepting Bitcoin payments. For more info and a map of places where you can spend your bitcoins, see:

How to get there: Arnhem is 1 hour by train from Amsterdam, or 30 mins from Utrecht, and close to the German border. Everything is near Arnhem Central Station, and there's a large parking garage at central station.

Fun facts:

• Some restaurant owners already announced they'll be putting some special dishes on their menu for this day (e.g. Miner's Menu, Bitcoin Bowl, etc).
• A Bitcoin ATM is being installed specially for this day, in order to reload your wallet at the spot.
• There will also be a fun contest, where the person who paid with his or her wallet at the most different places, will receive a nice prize (probably some amount of bitcoins, some merchandise, or who knows, maybe a coupon for a space trip with Virgin Galactic )

This will make Arnhem one of the bigger cities in terms of Bitcoin acceptance, and we hope this will contribute to Bitcoin going mainstream.
