Interesting question. I think there is no doubt these various types of use-cases.

1) biggest rig/efficient miners -- These users often come up with interesting cooling solutions. what comes to mind recently was how some people were removing fans from 5 chip gridseeds and stacking them tall or laying them sideways. this allowed for much larger solutions and was very educational. I myself really used some of these tactics to help quiet down my rig and efficiently stack them. Not to mention overclock techniques these people help the rest of us get the most from our rigs.

2) who gets it first -- Often times I have found the people that get it first provide invaluable information to other users such as review sites. I have seen blogs do in depth analysis even before releases of products and that helps alot of us make decisions. especially with pre-orders. The people who get it first usually are kind enough to share their views, pictures and it confirms the reality of the product for users who were waiting for that. The nature of this industry with pre-orders, some scams, and delays make even more important a set of people to get the miners first to help quickly share their findings such as overclocking, pictures, overall comments. Yet, there is no question there are simply those going at this purely technical and want the biggest power to beat rising difficulties. I presume lessons learned from how Bitcoin grew.

3) most hash power -- I think this is often seen in pools. People who are not listed as "anonymous" clearly want others to know their rig is running at high rates. I am often envious checking stats at the various pools. But again, these might be the same people going after the technical play of beating difficulty.

4) profit -- Probably the most difficult to pull off with lots of foresight. I think that can be seen in the scenario with the Titan. People have known about the Titan for some time but it is still not released which means people focused on profit follow the mantra of mining now is always better than mining later. I could have 3x the hash power but if the difficulty has risen 4x and above then it is not an apples to apples comparison.

Overall, I think the "best" miners are ones that share some of their results. Maybe its a trick they found such as optimizing the Gridseeds at a certain MHZ for overclock while still being cool. Or maybe they answer questions for people who are curious about the miner itself. Such as what does it look like and how are people using it. I remember when I first got into BTC I started with USB sticks. I remember going nuts trying to find hubs that would work correctly for the most USB sticks. It always helps when people share their experience and those are the "best" or better put most valuable miners in my opinion.

Yet, if we are talking about "skill" these people are the ones that really take the mining to unique levels such as a physical modification of a device. Overclocking a speed is one thing but testing different chips and soldering to me I see as a "skill" and invaluable to this industry.

Lastly, "credibility/influence" there will always be first movers in any industry. Those people often times are similar to the "best" miners I spoke of above. While not every miner has the time to share all their findings even spending the time answering some questions helps. I firmly believe the more "teachers" we have for "newbie miners" helps grow the cryptocoin world and is critical to the growth. I compare it to when I have friends come over and they see my mining rig it sparks conversation. That is always a great way to grow our world. Bitcoin and the other coins would never have grown to what they became if not for people taking the time to teach and show others while getting them involved. Therefore, it is incredibly important to have a range of machines too. Those smaller miners might have payback periods that are unrealistic but sometimes it is not about making the money back but more about learning the industry itself aka "getting your feet wet".

Anyways, I want to thank everyone who has spent the time to share their thoughts, findings, reviews, pictures, links, knowledge and more. We would not be growing and where we are if not for their help.

Cheers!

Hey everyone,

I have a question for you. Its going to sound a little strange, but I will do my best to word it here.

One of the things I have noticed in this industry, like most, is there is a stoke of competition. Who has the biggest rig, who gets it first, most amount of hash power, who can set up the most efficient miners, who can yield the most profit, etc. Some of those things are monetarily driven, but some of it is based on the "skill" of the miner.

What makes the "best" miners, the best?
What are some examples of the way miners compete with each other that's skill based?
What kind of things make a miner more credible? Or give them more influence?

I would love to hear your thoughts Smiley

Thanks for the reference... glad the tips helped someone else out! My blades have been hashing away nicely since my original post.

anyone with blades down?
As someone else has suggested (and it worked for me once):
1) Try removing all the pools, then re-entering them
2) If you have more than 1 blade, set a unique entry in the pool list with a unique worker name for each blade.  Then assign each blade from the drop-down list.  This way you can monitor each blade for problems.

From my own experience, set your worker/share difficulty on your pool to 1024 or 512. Share difficulties of 16 or 32 make the blades perform unreliably, in my experience.

Not sure if I missed this in the thread but will any hosted options return?

What the what?! Need to rerun some mining numbers. Fantastic news... will there be more hosted options?

Thank you all for the amazing response and support of our new line of miners - Generation A. Due to an unexpected and unprecedented amount of pre-orders, we were able to reach an agreement for a marginally larger shipment as well as lower price per miner!

Below is the new pricing schedule for the miners:

Batch 1 - Ship by 5/26
  • $169.95  -  The Fury
  • $1999.95 - The Black Widow
  • $3699.95 - The Falcon
  • $6699.95 - The War Machine

Batch 2 - Ship by 6/2
  • $159.95  -  The Fury
  • $1899.95 - The Black Widow
  • $3499.95 - The Falcon
  • $6299.95 - The War Machine

Batch 3 - Ship by 6/9
  • $149.95  -  The Fury
  • $1799.95 - The Black Widow
  • $3299.95 - The Falcon
  • $5899.95 - The War Machine

We are humbled to have such a large and supportive GAW family,

Three tips for you

1) we deleted all my pools and re-entered them. maybe its a flaw in the UI but it did help the blade get hashing again.

2) to monitor what I did to help narrow which blade was causing issues was have different worker from my pool for each blade. I could then check the pool and see if they were receiving hashes. It greatly narrowed my issues to the one blade hashing at half.

3) not sure but sometimes the UI is behind or incorrect. I have seen the UI state the blade is down or rebooting but in reality nothing changed and my pool shows it is still hashing.

Anyways just my tips... hope they help!

My tip is to use the ticket system as not only is there a record you can see who you are working with as they are assigned to your ticket. From what I gather they are at it 24/7 there trying to keep up. Yes there was some time between my ticket opening and some action but also I think its hard to expect much at 1am when I opened my ticket. I could always host myself but these are some pro cons of a hosted solution. Overall I think they are close to nailing it.
I have opened 7 tickets for the same issue over the past 4 weeks: blades not rebooting and stalling for hours at a time.  Each time supports has gotten them back online, but we shouldn't have to open a ticket this many times for the same issue.

I know they are working on the solutions, and I know it probably pisses them off for us to post here.  But until they get it straightened out, we/they have no choice.

Hopefully posting will piss them off enough to fix the rebooting/power/UI issues once and for all.

GAW: You can delete our posts, but people will still get the updates via email, so it's archived.  Instead of spending time deleting the posts, leave them up and respond with how you are fixing the issue; that would be much better.

In all honesty just sharing my story... I agree hard as a newbie to have credit but figured I would tell a truthful story. My blade stopped working on early Monday. I tried reboots etc myself. Then submitted a ticket finally on Monday night. They got to work on it today. I know its a lil slow but hell losing a lil hashing is better than having nothing up. Again, just wanted to share how things worked for me is all. I plan to get more involved as a poster. I don't think its perfect over at GAW yet but they are trying as far as I can tell.

Hey all, since I know as a newbie poster and account I ought to share that I am a long timer lurker to the forum this year. I only recently got into mining this year with the gridseeds. I too fell victim price falls. I bought Gridseeds back before GAW even was around at over 200 each so trust me I feel everyone's pain. In excess of 25 gridseeds kind of pain. Unfortunately, such is the name of the game as difficulty goes up hardware viability goes down etc but I am so happy to have GAW. In my particular situation having blades at home was no option. I have the usual cooling, noise but more importantly I have a wife and nobody wants an upset wife with fans buzzing 24/7 nonstop. So I took a shot with GAW on some hosted blades. I have been thrilled!

I thought I would share my support story today as well because my blades were hashing for about a week and I made some pool changes which caused one of my hosted blades to hash at half. Essentially a single blade issue. Anyways, I just wanted to specifically thank Luke from GAW today for going above and beyond helping me out with my hosted blade this morning. Luke worked with me via the ticket system all morning long and resolved it for me. I honestly am not sure what problem other people are having with the ticket system.

I will admit there have been some growing pains I am sure and maybe I am a bit naive as a newbie in this industry overall this year but I have had great interactions with various of the staff at GAW. My tip is to use the ticket system as not only is there a record you can see who you are working with as they are assigned to your ticket. From what I gather they are at it 24/7 there trying to keep up. Overall, mining has demands but I am pleased to say GAW has fulfilled my needs. I am hoping their own products will be even better supported. Anyways, I hope people are out there taking advantage of the slight drop in difficulty from last week and getting themselves some nice stash of altcoins. Good luck out there and crossing fingers for some price rises later this year and next.

Cheers everyone... C

Seriously starting to NOT trust this thread.  Every time people complain some "new to the forum" poster has a positive experience with the same issue.
