Yes you are obsessed  Cheesy
But BTC currency is such an inspiring subject. I just started out yesterday, and I have to be honest, I've never known something to be so techincal when it comes to online currency.
I'm ready to learn anything though Smiley
2  Other / Beginners & Help / A beginners guide to CPU Mining On Ubuntu 12.04 [TuT] on: May 21, 2012, 02:35:46 PM
Hey guys, I'm pretty bored right now till I get released from the newbie section so I thought I'd write a little guide, to help people get started in Mining.

I figured it would be easier for people to start CPU Mining to begin with, then they can move onto GPU mining, once they feel comfortable.

Note: CPU mining is pretty pointless, the reason I'm writing this guide is to help people get started with the basics, I tried mining on a single core CPU laptop, it was absolutely pointless, and I run the risk of overheating my laptop and I basically got no where, if you want to be a dedicated miner, I recommend buying/using a rig fitted with a GPU.

With that out of the way, let's begin..

So I presume you're using the latest Ubuntu edition which is, 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) If you're using Windows, there are guides you can follow on here Smiley

We are going to be using a command line miner called "CPUMiner" - Don't worry if you don't feel comfortable using the terminal, and want to use GUI's. - It's really easy Smiley
Besides, you're using Linux, almost everything is done in the Terminal for quicker tasks Smiley

Open up the terminal, and we want to install some dependencies for CPUMiner,
Type..
Quote
sudo apt-get install libcurl4-openssl-dev
Press "Y" to continue installing, Once done, go to this page..

http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=1925.0

And extract the folder to your Desktop.
Now back in the terminal, type:
Quote
cd Desktop/cpuminer-[VersionHere]
Example of recent version..
Quote
cd Desktop/cpuminer-1.0.2

Now we need to install it from source.
Back in the terminal, type:
Quote
./configure
Quote
make
Quote
sudo make install

Hopefully no errors will occur, which means we successfully installed from source.
Now whenever you want to use CPUMiner, we can call it anywhere from the /bin/ dir. - Don't worry if you don't understand, It's not needed Smiley

Now back in the terminal, type:
Quote
minerd --help

We're just going to be using the minimal switch arguments, which is --URL - For the Mining Pool we want to join to start mining.
And: --userpass Username:Password for the worker which is assigned to the pool. Again don't worry if you don't understand, it will all become clear Smiley

This is the Mining pool I use:- https://mining.bitcoin.cz/
As you can see on their homepage, the URL is right in front of your eyes after you scroll down a bit Cheesy We will use this in CPUMiner, it is as follows:
Quote

Now register yourself an account on Bitcoin.cz, once done, assign a new worker - This will be used for the Username:Password in CPUMiner.
A worker is as follows:
Quote
Username:[Worker.ID]
So mine could be:
Quote
Conch:MiningPool

This is the full username followed by : Then the password.
So to wrap this up and get the CPUminer running for you. Type in the Terminal:
Quote
minerd --url http://api.bitcoin.cz:8332 --userpass Conch.MiningPool:Password

Replace Conch.MiningPool:Password - To your own Username and Password.

It should start calculating your hashes and you're off Smiley
There will be a few messages pop up, like the status of your Mining progress, from "Yay!!!" - for Good (Working well) & "Boooo" - For bad, (basically meaning you're mining for nothing because it isn't working Tongue This could be because of a wrong password or other problem though.)

And that wraps it all up, I hope you learn something from this tutorial Smiley
I also can't stress this enough, if you want to earn cash in your back pocket, please consider upgrading for a GPU/power rig Cheesy

If you found this tutorial useful please feel free to drop me a little BTC, every penny, ahem.. BTC counts Smiley :

. - I'll do my best to bring more tutorials.

The only best solution is solar, which may cost a lot at first but you'll benefit in the long run by a LOT.

I live on my own and I live in an area where I don't pay for bills  Tongue
Therefore I can run a huge rig and it all gets paid, for me, for free Smiley
4  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Raffle for ATI 5830 on: May 21, 2012, 12:00:31 AM
I don't have .3 BTC sadly Sad
I would enter this.. but it looks like you've spammed this "Raffle" in the marketplace and this section also.
If you wanted to do this, I doubt you would spam, to get your word across.

To me, it just looks like you're going to run away with the coins  Cheesy
5  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How did you get your first bitcoin? on: May 20, 2012, 11:47:29 PM
I just started with the BTC scene about 5 hours ago Tongue
I'm loving learning it so far and think I have a long way to go, It's nearly my bedtime, hah, but I'll be up again in the morning to study some more.
BTCs are interesting and I can't wait to start earning, I want to replace my actual cash for BTC, it all seems a little expensive now though. Lips sealed

I tried mining in a pool earlier, but my hash rates are horrendous on this low powered CPU laptop of mine. I'm going to build a rig soon.
I've earned a few small amounts of BTC on free websites so far, and entered into some "prize" BTC sites Smiley

I'm rather excited about all this to be honest Smiley

There is a sticky in this section! Sorry if that sounded rude. It wasn't intended to be Tongue

Take a look at this:

You'll learn everything on that thread Smiley

Good luck!
7  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin Documentary! on: May 20, 2012, 10:25:53 PM
Brilliant documentary Neil. I favourited it.

Sadly I live in the UK and I have no idea how the economy system works in America, we have a poor economic system in the UK, which bring me to the subject that this year we have the London 2012 olympics, something I'll never see as I live too far away, the funding for it, is like 4 - 6 billion GBP.

I'd rather they just spent the money on something useful, we have a severe case of job loss as it is! Not being ignorant, just my thoughts Smiley
8  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where do you see bit coin in the next 2 - 6 months on: May 20, 2012, 10:13:39 PM
Sorry if this seems rather stupid..
But after reading some of the new topics on BTC and the way it works, There are (from what I read) only 21 million bitcoins available which are slowly diminishing over time, what happens after all 21 millions coins are revealed, is that the end of bitcoin & cyber currency? As I also read, the number of bitcoins will never increase above 21 mil.

Just curious.
9  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions on: May 20, 2012, 08:18:29 PM
I'm happy with these restrictions, 50 posts is rather silly - No one would even stay on the forum if we had to pass 50 posts to be granted.
Every forum should have restrictions, there is too much spam, & idiocracy these days.
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trust No One on: May 20, 2012, 08:15:37 PM
Interesting read, seems a bit drastic. I usually generate all my password randomly and keep them all inside a master key in my web browser, and the ones I use most, I physically write them down in a notepad then lock it away somewhere so no one else can look at it - No one looks at it anyway as I have no friends in real life Tongue and I trust my family members.

I'll definitely use this advice though, thanks! Smiley

Five minute coin never worked for me.
It counted down from 300 seconds then did nothing but sit there. Refreshed it and same happened again.

It also deducted like 90% of the earnings on the last minute  Huh
12  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trojan Wallet stealer be careful on: May 20, 2012, 07:27:10 PM
Are there any good GUI interfaces for Wallet encryption on Linux?
I don't use Windows - It's always infested with malware Tongue

I have used Linux for a good 6 or 7 years Smiley
13  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Introduce yourself :) on: May 20, 2012, 03:57:58 PM
Hi I'm Conch Smiley
Some people wrongly refer to my alias/handle/name as the "Conch" ear-piercing...  Undecided
It wasn't intended to be that way lol. I created my alias from a Conch shell Tongue

Nice to be here <3
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: POLL: What's the *real* reason you ever got into Bitcoins? on: May 20, 2012, 03:31:17 PM
I wanted to learn more about the new hype of internet currency.
Being able to earn money through pools, & making money while I sleep on a high powered rig Smiley

Also, it helps me learn more about technology Smiley
