Miners haven't been able to connect for a couple of days now.
Oh well, it was good while it lasted. Thanks.

My 'total time logged' is way lower than the real time I'm logged in: I expect that if I stay logged in 30 minutes it should increment by 30 minutes.
What I'm missing?

Thanks
Bye
Piero
It is the time you are "active" on the forum - looking through posts, etc.,, not the time you are logged in.

I'm not really fussed what the price of Bitcoins is. Yes, it might be a good idea to trade them now, or not, but after all the rises and falls in values I still have my coins - unless the collapse altogether.
Cryptocurrency is reasonably new and the values have yet to stabilise one way or another. Trying to predict the market would only cause me much anxiety, especially if I was to mess up the sale.
How many bitcoins do I have?
Er, less than ten  Angry  Grin

Made this guide: www.bitcoinuk.blogspot.com

So far the cheapest way that I found to buy btc from UK..

Hope it helps.

I hope so too.
Many thanks for taking the time to do this.

The UK situation really sucks! Anyone would think that UK banks don't want us to use digital currency. Wait? What? They don't...? I wonder why?  Wink
What puzzles me is why other companies do not set up shop in the UK to enable the easy purchase of Bitcoins? Is our goverment/treasury somehow causing problems?
I would have thought that being the only exchange in the UK would be quite lucrative no matter what the tax situation with respect to Her Majesty's Goverment is.

Susi

How do I see time spent on this board?
The total time logged-in is in the heading area at the top of the page on the left.

This is a bit of a me-too post as I thought I was going batsh*t-crazy at not finding a "reply" button on the forum that I need to post in!

Just for anyone who can actually post, the BTC-Oxygen site is not allowing sign-ins, but is at last handing out and accepting work again.
I just cannot get the site to let me in.

I understand this policy of stopping people blitz-posting and blocking up threads with spam, but even using the forum search option it took me ages to work out why I cannot post. This was a really frustrating and pointless exercise.
Please either make it clear during signup that newbies will not actually be able to do anything useful until they have kicked around the Newbie Area wasting time (4hrs) and effort (5 posts about what...?). OR, put a "restricted" tag or something similar next to their login so that new recruits will not waste time trying to find out why stuff doesn't work...

...or is that the plan? To make noobs more self-reliant...?

Cunning...  Wink
Awesome even... Cheesy

Thanks for the replies guys.

This is by no means a comprehensive reply, but it's just what I'm up to and found out so far. I hope it's reasonably correct and helpful...

I have decided to mine using my ATI graphics cards, while I'm using the machines during the day.
I'm currently running GUIMiner on Slush's Pool (with Stratum proxy enabled) and BTCOxygen (yes, really), while I get some better systems set up.
Since signing up here, I have made nearly a whole Bitcoin. I know, wow!  Cheesy
I'm never going to become a Bitcoin Millionaire, but I might make a few dollars here and there. It's winter in the UK atm, and while the main system is mining it produces just enough warmth to take the chill off the office.
I'm currently doing about 500Mhash/s spread across two pools.
It's a good idea to have two or more pools in case there is a problem with a particular pool being offline - that way the other pool is used as a fallback to allow mining to continue and not waste cycles.

You will need to get a wallet, either online or offline, in order to store your Bitcoins. You will also need to generate an "address" for that wallet and register it in order to be paid your mining rewards.

To any other newbies out there, be prepared to spend lots of time getting nothing much in return. There are many other miners out there who are grinding through awesome amounts of data (thousands of Ghash/s) that the chance of you finding a valid block (25 Bitcoins) by solo-mining is pretty much non-existant. Think of how likely you are to win a national lottery and you start to get a feel of what your chances of success are.
Pool-mining is a way to get some pay out for shares processed. You get a share of blocks found in the pool that you are mining in. The larger the pool, the better chance of a payout, but the smaller the payout as it has to be shared amongst more miners on a shares-processed basis. There are quite a few schemas used in different pools. It's up to you to research what scheme you want to take a risk with. Stratum support in the miner that you use is handy to have. Not going into Stratum here. Search the forum, etc.
There are also Proxy Pools such as BTCOxygen. These are a way of getting a fixed output per share processed. The jury seems to be out as to whether this is a good thing or not as far as I can tell. Some people are not happy with this particular pool, or the person running it. I'm taking a gamble and see what happens.
Oh, be aware, that most (all?) pools charge a percentage "tax" on your mining payout to cover their costs and make a bit of cash for themselves.

Hope I have got things right. Please be kind in your comments if I have said anything daft, and I will edit accordingly.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you well.

Best Wishes,
Susi xx

Hiya Folks!

Another noob here.
After the failure of PayFriend (and others) to accept payments on certain Usenet indexing sites, I decided to sign up to Bitcoin. I'm also sick of paying large fees to those certain companies.
Bitcoin seems to be a much better way to do things. Just need to know how to use it now and how to mine coins.

I'll try not to mess up the forum too much with dumb questions.
